This was such a disappointing experience. My friend chose Stone House because she had had good experiences there at Happy Hour and was excited about trying the upstairs dining room. The venue itself is beautiful. The martini was good. Unfortunately, that's about all I can recommend. It was a Sunday night at 6pm. The rock band downstairs was annoying (and playing to an almost empty bar), half the entrees on the menu were not available, and the pizza we were able to order seemed underdone and floppy. Where to start... we sat alone for what felt like a full lunar cycle before a waiter even appeared. I ordered the Burrata appetizer, expecting bread or crackers or something... but nope. Just a lonely ball of cheese. So there I was, sitting with my family eating raw Burrata like a sad kid housing ice cream after being called Shamu on the playground. I asked for my salad and lamb lollipops to come out at the same time... apparently "same time" means "after a few geological eras," because my salad arrived first, then we experienced another Industrial Revolution or two... and at long last the lamb finally made its grand entrance. Unfortunately when it hit the table it was definitely still bleating. The lamb was absurdly undercooked, but I was starving and desperate to leave, so down it went. My sister's lamb was so rare we named it Dolly and set it free to live its best cloned life in the meadow. We would've ordered more drinks, but no one ever bothered to check if we were still alive or thirsty. The one redeeming quality? The place looks beautiful. Me and my husband got married here 10/05/2024, quite literally the best day of my life. However, it is now under NEW management and has taken a turn for the worse. I woke up and found that the Stonehouse STOLE my wedding photos, and AI generated another woman over my face. My entire body/tattoos/dress/pose/picture/background was the same, but with a new AI face. I have reached out multiple times to address this issue and it has been met with complete silence. I secured a reservation for 1:45pm while driving up to Nevada City from Sacramento. It was nice that there were so many dining option times, so I selected 1:45pm from the "restaurant" list option. TBH, the only reason I chose to have lunch here was because the ("inside") pictures on their Yelp page looked cool. I was expecting to dine in a "cave-like" room with intimate lighting and stone walls. Is that what I experienced? Unfortunately not. First off, parking was terrible! Due to the Victorian Festival, the adjacent restaurant parking lot that says "restaurant parking only" was completely full from the people visiting the festival. We had to park 3 blocks up the hill. For the amount of cars parked in their restaurant parking lot, it didn't add up to the people actually dining inside, so the restaurant needs to do better in managing their parking lot and tow cars that shouldn't be parked there. Management, where you at? Once we walked in, it literally felt like 10 minutes until someone actually helped us, but they weren't busy like that. Servers would walk by us and didn't acknowledge at first, I noticed this because I made eye contact with this individual but he tried dodging. So weird. First rule in customer service, acknowledge- even if you're too busy to help, just say "hi and someone will be right with you." It was as though I was invisible, again so weird. When we were finally seated, they only had high top tables which wasn't really convenient for us since we had the baby+ stroller, but it is what it is. Slightly disappointed that the room did not look like the photos from other past patrons; room did not look like a cave and it was dark but not in a good way. My Crispy Chicken Sandwich was the lifeline of my visit. It was seasoned right and consistently crunchy with every bite. My side salad was dressed with the perfect amount of dressing. Huge plus, the chicken was a thigh piece which is my favorite and a must with chicken sandos. So.... Would I eat here again? Probably not. I can't say enough about my many experiences at Stone House. My hubby and I stayed in town at the National Exchange Hotel and ate here both nights because it was just too good! More recently, I took my parents out who live locally but have never been, and they did not disappoint! I think the gnocchi was one of the best dishes I've eaten in my life! Don't let the pictures on their website fool you. To say we were very disappointed with this restaurant is an understatement. My husband and I went to the Stone House last night for dinner. First off, parking is ridiculous. The parking lot is very small and the only reason we were able to get a spot is due to me having a handicap placard. When reviewing the menu, we noticed that it wasn't even close to the menu on their website. I asked the waitress about this and her response was, "it changes all the time." The menu was very limited so I felt like I was just settling on the only beef they had on the menu, which was a hamburger and fries. (I could go anywhere to get a hamburger and fries. Very disappointing) My husband's $24.00 pizza came out with burnt crust and was very thin. (see picture) My $22.00 hamburger was ok, but the french fries were terrible. They were extremely greasy and soggy. When the waitress asked how our food was, I looked at my uneaten greasy fries and said, "These are really greasy." Her response was, "they are cooked in olive oil, so it's fine." Ummmmm, ok, who cares. They were grossly saturated in oil and I couldn't eat them, so no, it was not fine. (see picture) (Note that she did apologize as she handed us the bill, but a better apology would be to not change us for them. This is what a good restaurant would do) We are 39 year locals, and we will never go back to this restaurant, nor will we refer them to our family or friends. Came here for an anniversary dinner while visiting Nevada City. Cozy, hip, rustic ambiance, delicious food, and very reasonable prices for the quality. We split a plate of sourdough / butter and marinated green olives to start - super tasty. My flank steak with frites were pretty good - the meat and chimmichurri were excellent. Fries unfortunately arrived limp but still had a good flavor. Very generous portions. 4.5/5 overall. My husband's skate wing was delicious and a super unique item. 5/5 We ended by splitting an order of pistachio lava cake (delicious and not too sweet). Excellent and responsive service. Given that we are used to Bay Area prices, the cost for this filling, well executed meal seemed lower than we are used to paying for similar quality meals. We had a fantastic first experience, trying out Stone House! I wanted to take my mom and sister for their birthday dinner. Stone House went above and beyond and greeted us with lemon drops (I added that to our reservation notes on Open Table) which made the start to our dinner perfect. The food was excellent, so flavorful. The atmosphere is exactly what you would expect warm and cozy, classy and clean. If you haven't been give it a try for date night. Ooof. Where to begin. I came with my family last night based on the great photos we saw of the food, but I think the only thing we walked away with enjoying was the live music. The service was honestly one of the worse experiences I've had. Not necessarily from getting things wrong but we were just avoided. It took a long time to even get greeted. So long we actually thought about leaving before even ordering. My lamb came out actual lamb jello. Bloody, gooey and raw. It was inedible. We all would have loved at least another round of drinks but never received a swing by to even ask or check on the food. I had to stop the server mid walking absentmindedly by us to even ask for the check over my still baaaaahing plate of lamb. It's my opinion only, that the upstairs service is terrible. I ordered Black Cod at a cost of $40.00. The portion was about 2 1/2 oz of Cod and 1/2 cup of cooked white rice. Oh ya, 2 basil leafs. As far as the service goes, took way too long. And the food was a cold. I reviewed their menu online and it showed Scallops. I was looking forward to having scallops. Wasn't available. The menu is very limited. We did have a good bottle of wine. Will not return! Not until they change the menu and service. I'm not one to get aggressively vocal about subpar dining experiences, but this was truly awful. The food was flat out bad, overpriced, and the service was slow and inattentive. We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and were promptly seated upstairs. The hostess was kind. It took about 10 minutes before anyone came to get our drink order, and it took about 15 more minutes to get drinks. All of that was fine. When the server brought our drinks, she then took our entire food order... and that was the last time we saw her until we asked for our check. For a starter, I was excited to try the whipped burrata because the flavor combination sounded delicious, but the proportions were completely off, and it ended up being bland. I normally love a burrata centric appetizer, so I was disappointed. That being said, it looked pretty and I was still optimistic about my upcoming entrée. The main courses took an exceptionally long time to come out, and because there was no complementary bread or anything like that, we ate the bland burrata with a spoon. Why with a spoon? The burrata only came with a few slivers of hard bread as a conduit to consume it, but we were extremely hungry so we ate it anyway. I was going to ask for some more bread slivers, but as I said, I never saw our server again until the very end, and nobody ever checked on us a single time. We ran out of the drinks our server had brought us before some harried food runners dropped off our entrees, and we were never asked if we would like another, and we were unsuccessful at every attempt to flag someone down. And the food. It was so, so bad. I ordered the steak medium rare. It came out almost well done. It was not only way overcooked, but the outside was completely burnt and tasted that way. This was not a pleasant char. I've had a burnt steak before that was redeemed by the delicious flavor of the interior meat, but this steak itself had zero flavor. It was supposedly marinated, but it was the most bland steak I have ever been served in a restaurant setting. They served it with a bitter chimichurri, and the combination was atrocious. I haven't sent back a meal in years, but this was one that should have never made it out of the kitchen. For $40, it should at minimum be edible. I had one of the pre-sliced cuts, my companions tried one slice to verify, and we all waited for someone to come back so we could send it back. They never came back. Not our server, not a manager, not even a food runner. My husband got the bolognese. The noodles were drenched in olive oil, and once again, the meat sauce was flavorless. It tasted like they mixed unsalted ketchup with rinsed hamburger meat and called it a day. While I don't doubt that the fettuccine noodles were housemade as the menu stated, there is no logical sense that it would've been so slimy if it was freshly made, which is what most people assume when a house made pasta is on the menu. I don't know if they only make it once a week or if somebody was cutting corners today, but it was so gross. How in the world do you mess up bolognese that badly? I honestly don't understand. When our server finally appeared 30 minutes later, we were beyond ready to leave. At that point, I just wanted to pay and forget this place existed. It was far past the appropriate time of asking for something else instead. We asked for our check and declined her offer of to-go boxes. The server pointedly looked at our mostly uneaten food and asked if anything was wrong. I told her plainly that it was not good... and then she offered us a complimentary dessert to make up for it. No thanks. The positive parts: One of our companions got the friend chicken and liked it (though the mashed potatoes were also fairly bland... like seriously, salt is your friend, stop excluding it from the convo) and the fries that came with the steak were actually seasoned very well. Someone got the pasta that was pesto drenched, and the pesto was good... which based on the rest of the meal makes me think it was probably from a jar. I don't know that for sure, obviously, but I don't understand why that was edible when the rest was so bad. We ordered four entrees, two cocktails, two mocktails, and our total was over $200 before tip. The audacity lol For the record, I don't blame this awful experience on the waitstaff. They appeared to only have one server working the entire room we were in. She was kind and I'm sure if she had time to check in on us, she would've tried to get our food order fixed. But it is what it is. There are better options around that same pricepoint in the area, and if you're only in town for a short while, I would pick another one of them. We have been twice and both times disappointed. The food is very oily! It surprises me for a restaurant that is trying to be high end/upscale dining that the food is so very oily. We waited over 20 minutes just to have our drink orders taken, after having waited 10 minutes for the table itself to be setup. Multiple menu items were unavailable--some we were told about when ordering, others only after the food was delivered. And yes, that meant waiting all that time just to be told what we ordered wasn't coming. The patio was chaotic, with dogs barking nonstop. The staff seemed totally disorganized--zero communication and a general air of indifference. No water refills, no fresh tableware, and no effort to check in with us. As for the food? Cold. Mushy. We had our anniversary dinner at Stone House this week while visiting Nevada City. It is a beautiful building with a lovely atmosphere and we appreciated that it was open on Tuesdays (lots of other restaurants weren't). The menu was extremely limited (and different from what's listed on their website). The small plates section was all vegetarian. It really could use some meat and seafood options to complement all of the other offerings. We each ordered a soup, which was tasty, but hardly worth the price (kale and chickpea) and inaccurately described (our server said it was a stew). We shared a beautiful salad with green goddess dressing that we very much enjoyed. Then we didn't really know what to order since there were so few options. The service was exceptionally slow and our server never came back, I tried to flag him down but he didn't hear me, so we actually had to ask the host to order more food. We decided to share the NY steak (the $65 steak, I might add) and it was presented beautifully but unfortunately it was almost entirely gristle. Disappointing for the price. There were only two desserts on the menu and one was unavailable because it hadn't been made yet for the week. Maybe Tuesdays aren't the night to go, but we were a little bummed about how costly this meal was and that it was for a special occasion, but we still enjoyed ourselves despite the shortcomings. read more

Went with a group of nine to celebrate a friends birthday. Not the vibe we were expecting. We were glad they sat us apart from the main dining area since we were a large, younger group. However the room that we were in felt very isolated (there was one table pushed against the wall and that was where we sat). Service was okay, food was very below standard. We were informed that they were out of a key component for multiple of our meals as the food was coming out. Everybody had complaints about their meal except for the one Caesar salad that was ordered within the group. A server also spilled curry (that was thankfully cold) all over one of our guests. Pros: Beautiful venue. Interesting menu. The chef is creative with hits and misses. I had two of the best dishes I've ever had. I usually order the beet salad if there's on one the menu. This one was at the top of my list. i also had the gnochi which was amazing, The flavors were surprising. I would go back for both of these. Cons: I hope that both if our issues were unusual. I love that they had singer/guitar player on a Wednesday night. But, he wanted to chat with us while we ate. Just NO! Tried too hard to put his spin on old favorites and they were unrecognizable. A summary: Bad food, bad service, overpriced, and weird atmosphere. The details: When we arrived we asked for a table for four upstairs. We were first offered a cocktail-type seating in an almost empty room downstairs with a solo singer/guitarist playing for two people. When we declined the host said he might be able to find something. Upstairs we were greeted by another fairly empty room, which had more than enough tables. Already the evening was getting a bit strange. When we ordered our drinks the waiter brought the wrong beer and accused us of not ordering correctly (we double checked the menu and verified we did order correctly.) If only this was the end of the misadventure. We ordered our food, and the starters came. The salad had sand and/or dirt in it, and at first we thought it may be something with the dressing but we also had a salad without dressing and it had the same dirt/sand in it. We can only assume they didn't wash the lettuce. The salad without dressing was much worse and was left untouched the whole meal. For our entrees we ordered the curry plate, the rack of lamb, the macroplate, and the pesto gnocchi. After quite a while with no food showing up and the waiter busy with everything but checking on us, one of us had to go downstairs and ask someone to see about our order. Then our food miraculously appeared. Again, if only this turned into a happy ending. The curry was at best bland, and more like a soup, the macro plate looked like something thrown together from a Safeway snack plate, and the gnocchi was cold. Full disclosure, the gnocchi was also terrible, basically lumps of overcooked, tasteless potato that fell apart when touched, so warm or cold it would have been inedible. The rack of lamb was actually pretty good but nowhere near worth $70. Of course by the time we ordered the main course we should have been wise enough to not order such an expensive entree, but hope springs eternal. When we were done eating what we could, the waiter came and took our plates. The untouched salad, the barely touched gnocchi, and the half eaten curry might have elicited a query about us maybe not liking something, but either the waiter was oblivious, did not want to know, or had seen this picture before, so he happily collected our plates and left. The bill wasn't a surprise, but it was absurdly expensive for such bad food. On our way out we passed through the downstairs room again and saw the same thing, a solo singer/guitarist playing for two people in large and otherwise empty performance space. The whole experience felt like being in a Fellini movie. Needless to say we will never be going back. It's too bad because it's a very interesting and attractive space, completely being wasted. read more
