It is not an…read morealternative education facility within the Round Rock Independent School District, designed to provide support to students who need a more structured or specialized environment. This center plays an integral role in the student's educational ecosystem. RROC provides support to students who may be facing academic, behavioral, or personal challenges. RROC allows students to have a second chance at academic success through targeted instruction and support. RROC is a part of the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program, however, it is not punitive but constructive. These students get to start with a clean slate and reimagine their academic success. We were very thankful to use the RROC facility for our retreat. We also donated school uniforms to RROC. The purpose of our sorority's retreat is to reflect on the first half of the year, lessons learned and edits for the second half of the year. We also are reviewing programs for the second half of the year and associated milestones and metrics. The retreat consists of a Kickoff with Welcome & Icebreaker. Next there was a community conversation with RROC leader and instructions how we could help RROC through community service. The morning was consumed with workshops ranging from mental wellness and fitness to career transitions and networking. Our sorority had a working lunch where highlights included cluster and leadership updates and retreat wrap up. All in all, it was a very productive day to learn more details about RROC and to conduct sorority business. It also was a great opportunity to bond with my sorority sisters. I always look forward to our annual retreats.

Meridian is a public, tuition-free charter school that offers International Baccalaureate (IB)…read morecurriculum from Primary all the way to graduation. Residents of Williamson County are eligible to attend Meridian, and this school offers a worthy alternative to the good schools we already have in the area. My son attends the primary program, and we have really enjoyed being part of the Meridian community. Pros: The building and instructional spaces are high-quality and pleasant, especially for a charter school based in a converted office building. The IB curriculum is rigorous, and it offers a more balanced world perspective than the Texas public school experience. Teachers are absolutely top-notch. Meridian treats teachers well, and the quality shows. The optional after-school program (Triple A) is fantastic for working families. The cost is reasonable, the teachers/group leaders are great, and my son has a blast. The kids are constantly rotating through meaningful art, academic, and athletic activities. It's amazing! Meridian has very engaged parents and volunteers. There's even a school community garden that has been integrated into classroom curriculum. Administration is engaged, passionate, and empowered to move quickly to steer the school in the right direction. They are not beholden to monolithic policies of larger districts. They can experiment and deploy best practices (like the awesome Mind Up program) Cons: Admission is by lottery, and waitlists have been very long in recent years. Word has gotten out. With a campus located in a generally commercial zone, the grounds sport more of a warehouse/prison-yard feel. Green space is seriously lacking. The kids do have adequate outdoor space and play-structures, but there are no large grassy fields. With a funding gap versus public schools, fundraising and parent donations are a factor. I think Meridian might also face challenges in things like technology deployment, given that the school does not have access to the same kind of clout (like bond issues, huge budgets) of a RRISD. The campus is a commuter campus with no bus service or "walkability" like a neighborhood school. Also, the location is near I-35 in an area that frequently has traffic conditions that are far less than ideal. This school will require extra commitment for pickup and dropoff, but it is well worth it.

Wow, what can I say, I feel like we won the jackpot when we found Magellan. our daughter started in…read moreKindergarten and although she isn't very good at adapting or transitions, she immediately fell in love with her teachers and school friends.. There are no cliques and no bullying and when we have had issues we have raised them with the teachers and they have jumped on them to solve them immediately, and unlike other private schools there's no sense of entitlement from the parents or students. Also, because the school is so good at awarding scholarships not everyone is 'rich'! The school also has a great parent teacher association which offer weekly meet-ups and play dates as well as adult only events. Each class also has a WhatsApp chat group so parents can easily communicate with each other. If it sounds like one big happy family you'd be right, that's exactly what it feels like. In terms of academics my adhd child has thrived. Diagnosed at 4 we thought she would struggle but the school has been amazing at supporting her needs and accommodating her. They also offer many different seating types from a bouncy ball chair, to cushions on the floor and other such. It's very holistic and non political and offers many diverse ways of learning. They have a calming corner, encourage reading and emotional open communication as well many other ways of teaching emotional and academic intelligence. They teach in Spanish from day one and introduce Mandarin from 3rd grade, they also teach following the international Baccalaureate which is amazing. It teaches the children self confidence through weekly presentations and teaches them autonomy. Honestly this school is amazing and now it goes until 12th grade we are obsessed and so you will be too. But, sshh don't tell anyone about our secret slice of heaven.

Hands down, my husband and I feel it is best decision we have made for his education. Although it can be a bit pricey, we have felt that it has been worth every dollar. He is growing up to be a well spoken, well thought, caring little human. I love that he is bilingual, but I really love his open minded views and his eagerness to learn. The teachers... the teachers have all been so amazing. They are loving, caring and really take each student's personalities and abilities into consideration as they grow from year to year. As I said, it's not the cheapest option and we do discuss yearly if we will be renewing his tuition-- and, with each year this answer comes easier and easier with an astounding "YES". We love the school, the community, the parents and look forward to many more years at Magellan!
