Sale items almost never ring up correctly which means that if the entire line of pasta for example was on a deal, they have to go back and check and then apply the price. And they do it one by one with everything, never efficiently with all your stuff at once. They don't even believe you if you learn from this and take TIME MARKED PICTURES OF THE DISPLAYS. The people who work at self check out just sit on their phones and seeing as the self check out accuses you of not placing. Your item in the bagging area every 5 min this really slows things down. Ditto to the meat and seafood stations on people rarely actually being there. So you either have to decide you have 20 min to spend dealing with someone to pay or pay upwards of $30 extra for speed and convenience and the proper prices. Just some of the rudest people and the biggest theft basically! The only well run department and nice people are the liquor store guys. They're always sweet and so is the Dunkin' people actually. So the parts that aren't the actual stop and shop are good. Come for booze and coffee and get your groceries elsewhere read more

Just rude as can be. I took my dog in there today because it was so hot and I had no where to take him. The cop told me it was board health thing I couldn't have the dog in there. So I was embarrassed as it was so I put my carriage of stuff away on the side and was going to leave when the cop follows me like I am a criminal and says you gotta go in the loudest rudest way So I left the carriage there. No understanding no calmness just telling the manager sitting beside him she didn't say anything. I honestly didn't k ow I couldn't take the dog in the store with he is 8 lbs. Never shop there again. Stopped here on the way to a buddy's place and my god this place sucks. Came to buy a couple beers and ice cream for my 8 year old son and the self-checkout was insanely slow. A majority of the employees at self-checkout are having a conversation and avoid eye contact with all customers so they can stand and talk to each other all day! I got pissed and went over the 2 items lane and they don't even do their job to help pack your groceries. The packing employees just stare at you angrily whilst you the customer pack the groceries since they don't do their job. Thankfully, I live in Woburn so I'll never have to step foot in this place again. I would give 0 stars if I could. read more

I've been going to this stop&shop for as long as I can remember. It's unfortunate that with all the revitalization going on in Malden that they have not invested in renovating this stop&shop. There are times when I go there and I choose not to purchase certain items because the upkeep of the store in g, in general, is just not what it should be. I stopped by on my way back in town, and it's just going downhill. I hope Malden invests in the stop&shop because it's a staple, but it is in DIRE need of renovation. read more

This SS&S in Malden at 99 Charles St. not only gouges its customers with their prices but also goes out of their way to deceive them. Just a few examples: In the produce section, the prices are boldly printed and easily read, but "per lb." is very tiny and printed in the bottom right hand corner and very easy to miss. The same goes for "ea." also in tiny letters at the bottom right of the signage. So it's very easy to confuse a price as being per pound or per each. Second, apparently this store has a problem making the number "1" distinguished from a "7." Many price signs in the aisles, especially in the bottom shelves where the customer has to almost get on their knees to make out whether it's a "1" as in $1.98 or a "7" as in $7.98 because the top of the "7" is clipped back to almost look like a "1," are very deceiving! Given the inflationary prices on food items as it is, a customer could mistakenly assume the item is on sale. I believe this is deliberate. I have mentioned these issues several times to produce and grocery workers who said they'd certainly mention these concerns to their department heads. That was months ago, and nothing's changed. The store prices are much higher than at Market Basket in Revere to begin with, so the least this store could do is improve the signage of their items and make sure the signs are right under the items. A significant number of items don't even have signage under them, and the customer must use those faulty price check scanners. There are few registers open as well during the day and customers end up using the self check out machines. Of course, there's no discount on your items for having to check yourself out when a cashier and bagger get paid for doing the same thing. The ONE positive I find about this store is that it has its own liquor and beer section, and those prices are comparable with other liquor stores. read more

I first started going to the Malden S&S because of proximity. I noticed right away that there was a complete absence of customer service. The more I went, the more I realized that the shoppers' attitudes were the same as the employees'. I wondered if their attitudes were attributed to the employees. Cashiers won't even say "hello" back to you. Some won't even utter a word thru the whole checkout process. Not even tell you the amount of your purchase. So, I switched to the Fellsway S&S. The store felt cleaner, newer. While shopping today, an employee was was rolling a cart of items to restock a cooler. She left the cart right in the middle of the aisle, forcing shoppers to maneuver around the cart. Then, I was in a self check out register and the eggs wouldn't register. Employee came over, swiped her card, punched in some numbers and left. Eggs still wouldn't scan. She came back, I told her the eggs wouldn't scan, she swiped her card again, entered some numbers and left. Never saying one word. Not even a "you're welcome" to my "thank you." The employees that work for S&S must be miserable or that's just the type they target to hire. I'll get my groceries somewhere else since my patronage is neither needed nor desired at S&S. read more

"EGREGIOUSLY ATROCIOUS" is the only way to describe this store, specifically their 'customer service' -- if you can even venture to call it that without laughing ironically -- especially being that their MANAGERS can/will ACTIVELY accost you as a customer for seemingly no reason other than they must just not like the way you look so therefore you are somehow suspect. Even though you haven't done anything wrong and are just minding your business shopping like a normal human being. Last night, a manager without a name tag or any Stop & Shop identifiable clothing literally flags me down three quarters of the way down the aisle (too good to walk to me if you have an "issue" pal?), so I put down the dog treats I'm shopping for go to see what he wants because he keeps waving or gesturing (somewhat rudely, even). I expected it was probably something innocuous like they're going to wax the floor in that aisle or bring a palette of new stock down that aisle or something so NBD, right? Wrong. Guy tells me that they're closing in ten minutes (they weren't, it was more like twenty as it was 11:42 and they close at 12:00) but they hadn't even made the 15 minute announcement yet... In any case why did you flag me to come to you, ACROSS THE STORE, to tell me this as I'm grabbing my laat one or two items- of which I didn't even have many of total? APPARENTLY, he wanted me to go check out at the register --RIGHT THEN-- I mean WTF!? I told him there's more than 10 minutes left and I was only grabbing a couple things anyway, but he absolutely did not care and started arguing with me even though I showed him current GPS time on my phone and was generally super rude and combative with me even though I started out this conversation very cordially. He stated that the registers closed BEFORE the store (a lie that doesn't even make sense internally, because why would a STORE that SELLS things be open if the CASH REGISTERS are closed, being that's their reason for existence?) and of all things he told me that I needed to FOLLOW THE RULES even though I WAS following the rules and that HE BROKE several Stop & Shop policy rules during our brief and unfortunate encounter. At this point I was understandably aggravated enough by his unprovoked lies and borderline harassment that I straight out called him the rudest employee I have ever encountered anywhere --TO WHICH HE REPLIED "THANK YOU" BY THE WAY--and I wanted to talk to a manager... Guess what? He WAS the on duty manager! It would be almost shocking if this Stop & Shop location wasn't so abysmal overall anyway. So yeah, not only did the manager not have a name-tag, he didn't give me his name either when I asked SEVERAL times because I was (and AM) calling corporate to report his negligent rudeness and wanton disregard for customers and the general 'look' Stop & Shop probably wants to be going for. After I called him out, which was ONLY AFTER HE STOPPED ME A SECOND TIME WITHIN A LITERAL 3-4 MINUTE PERIOD (believe me I was checking my phone, hard) to lie to me and grief me specifically while people were still literally walking in the front entrance right behind him, did he start getting "nicer" - I mean sure managers are required to wear name tags and respond (correctly) to customer requests for their names and he did neither - but at least he started to get pretty quiet pretty quickly after that instead of explicitly combative. Now that he was potentially getting into 'trouble' as a middle aged man with a middle management position. Pretty pathetic, actually. Grown man essentially picks a pointless fight and won't tell another adult his name when he gets called out, because he didn't have half a leg whatsoever to stand on. By the way, I found out this manager's name from another employee since he wouldn't give it to me himself. This poor excuse for a manager (and human being, actually, given how he treats people that he has never met) is Eric. Eric Collorone. ERIC COLLORONE. I am attaching his picture to this review so the Stop and Shop HR Department and/or corporate office who checks this can positively identify him because he needs to be identified and reprimanded professionally or let go if he is in a MANAGEMENT position and this is how "seriously" he takes his job requirement of customer service and satisfaction. If you bring a small puppy even for 5 minutes into the store to buy a few things and take a total of 10 minutes at most, an employee will immediately be aggressive and say vile things towards you and your pet whilst calling the health department and the police. A couple employees here are atrociously vile and nasty towards strangers that just want to grocery shop in peace. An employee will say vile things to you and your pet for carrying your innocent pet that doesn't even make a sound or bother anyone at all. I understand pets aren't allowed, but saying nasty things and speaking someone in a disgusting manner at 10 am in the morning doesn't help or is necessary. Also, a majority of the employees don't even do their job to pack groceries or help with the self- check out! They are insanely slow with absolutely no employees at the self-check out service since they all are too busy talking and having a conversation with eachother. They should rehire employees here. It's not great but not terrible. The main draw is the early opening time and late closing time. Sometimes when I get bored, I walk over to pick up a few things. When I go there late at night there tends to be regulars otherwise it's dead which I prefer to overcrowded aisles. I once watched to people drive the accessibility carts into each other intentionally like bumper cars. Another time there was a guy feeding a duck bread from his hand. I went to Stop and Shop located at 99 Charles St. Malden. I was literally insulted by the employee at the self check out part of the store. I was polity asked the employee why she insulted me. Instead of apologizeing, she was mad and screaming at me. I went to the fron desk and took the issue to the manager. The manager told me that she will investigate the incident. I left the store and called to the corporate office and virbally file a complaint against the employee. The costomer representative from the office told me that a district manager will reach out to me for follow up; however, instead of, the same manager I spoke with at the location called me and tried to convince me the insult wasn't directed at me. In response, I told her that isn't correct. As a result she terminated our conversation. This location costomer service is very very bad. On Line ordering is a joke. Used my S&S login and it keeps assigning me to stores 75= miles away despite requesting the local store multiple times. Finnally finished the order, it did not apply discounts and would not let me check out since it could not accept my address. I was picking it up, not having it delivered. The house has been here since 1958. A call to Customer Service 3 minutes after they opened had 42 calls waiting. WHAT WASTE OF MY TIME. Off to a competitor !!!!! read more

I love the variety in this store, they now carry a lot Asian shelf food that before I had to trek to the nasty Asian supermarket 2 blocks away. Employees are actually very helpful, it's very busy here and I always get great quality meat, fish and produce. The day they came back from the strike all the employees were cleaning all the fixtures and counters right to the inside refrigeration! The bathrooms could be nicer but if people would stop trashing them it wouldnt be a problem. I mean, who takes a dump in an urinal? Malden Center isn't exactly a center city location, I never understood why this place has a city feel to it. Grimey, grungy, dirty.....all of those adjectives come to mind. It's huge and it was the first in the area to carry beer/wine but that's about all it ever had going for it. Luckily, within a 3 mile radius....I have THREE Stop & Shops to choose from and this is the one I only use when I'm fairly desperate for some ingredients and passing by. If you're heading on 60 W, forget it....it's virtually impossible to turn around and get to because none of the intersections allow you to turn left. I really only stop here if I'm going east and want to pick something up. The prices are some of the highest in the area, especially on produce, although it is usually a decent selection. Maybe their rent is high given where they are. But again, this isn't Manhattan and people have actual choices to shop somewhere else. My absolute biggest beef is that it's ALWAYS BUSY. Forget a Sunday afternoon here, the lines are incredibly long. Not that I do much shopping at that time but have had to a handful of times and can't stand it. But go in on a random Tuesday night at 8:00 and you're still looking at potentially long lines (with few registers open either, another issue I have here). I get that it's right near a T stop but I could never understand, given the cleanliness and prices here......why most people do their shopping here. Also, forget trying to take your cans/bottles to the redemption center....they are occupied at all hours of the day by local panhandlers going through Maldenite's trash and bringing them here for the coin. I've gotten in fights with people over machines and it's just not worth it. There are better locations VERY CLOSE BY, even from the same company. Place is filthy! Junkies and known area prostitutes constantly hanging around making offers and begging for money. It is dirty dirty in here. I've spoken to the manager 2x about the bathroom conditions. The back smells like rotted food. The bulk of employees are not dressed clean or what I would consider appropriate...pants down to their knees, underwear hanging out, do rags in and handkerchiefs over unkept hair, filthy rotten fingernails and body older issues. Every time I come here I regret it! I wish so much there was another major grocery store in Malden. 1) checkout lines are pure chaos and extremely slow. Self-checkout machines are the most sensitive and finicky self-checkout machines. Regular lines are slow and employees are not nice and make weird invasive comments. 2) Robot that patrols the store and blocks aisles so grocery carts can't fit. Robot is always in the store at. 3) The paper bags are extremely low quality and now they have the nerve to charge you for a bag that tears in half if you load a single banana into it??? I assume if you charge me and the bag tears from a couple of groceries I can return it as defective. 4) they were entirely out of cheese on a recent visit where I only came for three ingredients including cheese. My belated New Year's resolution is to stop shopping here once and for all and drive the extra five minutes to wegmans. read more

I am generally not a fan of Stop & Shop supermarkets. This one is okay. It's one of the 3 Stop & Shops in Massachusetts which, by law, is allowed to sell liquor. It also has a large cooler area. It has a good number of self-checkout stations. My favorite thing at this particular store is their salad bar. At $4.99/lb., it is well stocked with both salad ingredients and specialty ingredients - a gem. On my most recent visit, at about 1pm on a Saturday afternoon, the floor in the produce and bakery areas was FILTHY. It probably hadn't had any service since the previous night. There were dried stains and spills in some places. The corn bin had husks all over the floor in front of it. This is the part of the store that needs to stay the cleanest. read more

For anyone in Malden who shops at the Stop and Shop on Charles street, I just had an eye opening experience. As I was in line checking out, after rummaging through bare shelves to get the essentials for my family, an employee yelled to the woman checking out "Hey, $11.50." I looked over and saw her holding a case of toilet paper. The woman ringing me up then asked her how many rolls, which the other employee responded with 12. The woman at the register then says "I am over the toilet paper thing", as the other replies "ya I got over 100 rolls at home." So, not only are they up charging each other but they are clearly hoarding rolls in the back of the store. My family has not over purchased paper products as we know there are others who need it. My grandparents are currently down to 2 rolls, but thankfully we have 1 or 2 to spare. This whole interaction sickened me, especially both of their complete ignorance to act like this in front of a customer whose situation they do not know. Thankfully my family and I support eachother and we will find a way to get by through this difficult time. But, its ignorant individuals like this that are making others suffer. I will no longer be doing my business at the Stop and Shop on Charles street. I will gladly drive an extra 10 minutes to Revere if this is how they think it is appropriate to conduct business. With that said, I am applaud at the lack of humanity some people have. This place is just terrible. I only shop here because it's the only grocery store around. If there were a market basket or a hannafords nearby, I'd be there. Firstly, it's filthy. The bathrooms are less hygienic than a T stop restroom. Their produce is just shy of its expiration date, if you're lucky. They never consistently have the same products in the butcher section. Hell, one time I was there, they ran out of chicken breast and turkey. No one seems to care about their jobs. (I suspect S&S is unwilling to pay wages high enough to employ decent staff.) You have to bag your own groceries and on multiple occasions I've had cashiers just bitch incessantly about their lives while they ring me up without so much as a "good day." This store was recently remodeled and looks worse than it did before. It's now very dark and confusing. I live 5 minutes away by foot and the only reason I own a car is to NOT shop here. If you don't have transport, you already know that this store has you by the cojones and will gleefully fleece you with their pricing. Even Shaws in Melrose has better pricing, and Shaws is not exactly noted for their affordability. As a 7-year veteran of grocery retail I'm baffled at how a store can be so terrible and still drive the ridiculous volume they do, transport notwithstanding. The floors and bathrooms are always vile, the shelves are dusty, & the quality of the perishables is shameful. Despite a small army of yellow-clad worker bees milling about, the produce is never adequately stocked. The butcher's case is usually the worst, pricewise, and the meat is usually fresh but not high-grade. The employees all look like they want to hang themselves, but instead of commiserating with the customers who feel the same way, they instead dodge eye-contact and scurry away, leaving the aisle blocked by their u-boat or the shipper they were constructing. The only smile I've ever seen in this store is on the face of the manager, who makes odd appearances on major shopping days (Superbowl, Holy Saturday, Thanksgiving) to gleefully conduct the orchestra. Never seen him otherwise. (I can't review the customer service staff because I use the hand-scanner and you'd be a fool not to). Adequate stock. Clean floors. Keep the aisles free of derelict u-boats. This is the BARE MINIMUM a supermarket must accomplish to earn my patronage. But I have wheels and I'll cruise to Chelsea or Woburn for Market Basket. If you have to hoof it to your groceries, may I suggest the cheaper, fresher, but just-as-dirty Super 88 on Commercial street for still-green greens, for less green. read more
