I have to remember not to shop here. It's not because of the staff. The checkout staff I've encountered on both occasions were helpful and friendly. It's not because of pricing. This chain always has great sales. It's because of the aesthetics of this particular location. This place is so depressing. There are areas in this supermarket that are eerily dark. I've never seen anything like it. Change your light bulbs!!! To add, the ceilings are low. Not much they can do about that without a complete renovation. I've been going to this Stop and Shop for 12 years and I like it because the same employees have been there all this time, and they are all pretty nice, even if many are on the elderly side. I support a business that doesn't discriminate against seniors. For a while there was an issue with empty shelves and not many customers, but when I was there this Friday afternoon, there was a brisk number of customers and the shelves were decently stocked. The main complaint I have is that there was only a single checkout line open. They're relying too heavily on the self checkout but they're going to end up being a convenience store if they do that. I really want to like this store because it is awfully convenient for me. But I have to say it is very inconsistent with service and product. Today, I had a problem with the self-checkout. My 20 dollar bill did not register and may have gotten stuck in the machine. The young lady there to assist me wasn't sure what to do so she called for the manager. I waited and waited and I was made to feel like I was trying to steal my merchandise. If they at least would apologize for the inconvenience,. I would be ok with that. But no such luck! Finally got the manager( a young woman who was very pleasant) to finally give me my change back so I could be on my way . This store does have some good employees,. it just needs an upgrade in terms of better communication between employees and customers and a upgrade in the infrastructure of the store itself. Some of the clerks that work at the deli section are a disgrace. I have asked one of the Clark's to please wear gloves when handling cold cuts. Not once but twice. Second time I saw her touching her nose with no gloves and then cutting cold cuts. Needless to say I did not take the cold cuts. I would not even touch the pre-cut Coldcut. If they do that in front of you imagine what they do to those cold cuts when no one is looking. read more

This store has quite possibly the RUDEST staff I have ever encountered. The employees seems to go out of their way to be rude to you. I needed help because a discount wasn't showing up on my self check-out screen- a bunch of workers were just standing around and chatting, so I asked if one of them couple please help me. They looked over but nobody said anything or came, so I pressed the help button on my screen. A woman and over- no eye contact, not even a "hello," literally yelling across the store to continue a conversation she was having. I told her what I needed help with and she fixed it- I continued talking because I had a question about another discount, and she left before I could ask it. I had to literally follow her and ask her for help, which is what she's being paid for!!!! To be clear, I am always polite to employees. I stayed that way, but this really frustrated me. A friend of mine worked there for a week before quitting because of the awful bullying by the staff. She told me about how one employee messed something up while training her- she realized there was a mistake and asked about it (not to embarrass her, but because she was confused), and the employee got angry and started berating her. Then she told her not to ask her for help because she didn't want to give it (despite that being her job!!!). Honestly, half the people working there need to take a course in customer service. I'm sure some of them are nice, but the nasty people make me never want to return there. Racially discriminated Let me tell you a story what happen to my mom and I while shopping at stop & Shop this afternoon. I never in my hole life shopping at this store thought I would ever have a problem and to write a bad review. Honestly I am very disappointed still in shock that we had to go through all this trouble for a pasta sauce. We were doing self check out because they only had ONE CASHIER OPEN!!! We didn't mind doing the self check out but one of my moms last item after scanning all of them , was a pasta sauce that didn't have a price on it . It kept asking wait for an employee to help you and we had a Hispanic lady who we thought was going to help us find the price. She told us that she would be right back with the price we waited two minutes after not seeing her come back. I told my mom to pay and that I will pay for it when she gets back but after we saw that she started helping someone else . I went to get another sauce thinking that it was going to scan. After we scanned all of my items I left that can of sauce last, and same problem we had with the other. This time it was another lady that was so busy talking on the phone while helping customers out , I didn't put my mind to it. Until she came over and saw that we were frustrated with the sauce not scanning comes and grabes one of the items that we scanned already and keeps telling us that we scanned only one but we scanned all four of them. After I explained and showed it that we scanned all of them. Keeps repeating that no no no. It made us so frustrated that we called her for one thing she comes and talks about something else that we had no problem at all. And has the audacity to make a big show and talk loud about us in-front of everyone and to tell us good night after saying that we didn't scan all of are items basically discriminating us from the start. Please have this lady fired for being the rudest, unfriendly, unprofessional, and disrespectful person. I've never been so frustrated with a store in my life. I am in disbelief that the employee, Michelle Ortiz, had the audacity to scream down the isle after I had already made it almost all the way through the store in such a rude manor. I have a licensed emotional support animal because I suffer from anxiety and panic disorder and I can not go anywhere without him. He is trained to calm me down if he feels me start to panic. Michelle rudely hollered down the isle from the complete other side "Hello?? You can not have that dog in here" as I tried to explain to her he is an emotional support animal and I have the papers to prove it she continued to tell me she does not care and he must go. I'd also love to note that my dog was practically asleep in my arms- he did not make a noise or even turn his head and was never once out of my hands. In the year of having him as a support animal I have never ran into a situation like this AT ALL. Although I have never been asked to remove him from anywhere before, I would be understanding if I was at least asked nicely and treated like a human being. I am disgusted. read more

I used to shop all the time at this Stop and Shop. My only reason to come back now is the butcher window: the guys at the window are actual butchers, they know their trade, and they are excellent at their jobs and friendly with customers. The rest of the store has gone down. Most importantly the self checkout is a train wreck: - they process less people than the previous self checkout - there is now less checkout points - the bagging areas are low - forcing people to crouch - not sure how older people are doing this - there is never paper bags... ever I mentioned these to the manager of was very defensive and told me they did this because that's what customers wanted. I don't think he appreciated he had a 10 year customer in front of him who was telling him it's what I don't want. I will come back to the butcher shop, but for the rest Amazon and DiCecco are now my convenient shopping spots. And that's how you lose customers. read more

This is review is for the bakery. I've ordered/had stop and shop cupcakes in the past and they were good, nice and moist and the icing was tasty. Other cakes and items are usually good as well (hello truffle bomb cake!), however most recently my experience was not good. I made a large order of cupcakes for an event we were hosting. Firstly, placing the order is off-putting because the staff is trying to rush you off the phone and hardly seems like they got anything right. I called back to ensure they had the correct order and sure enough they had a couple of things wrong. The cupcakes looked nice enough when we picked them up. I had one and felt a little sick to my stomach. Then I noticed that there was SO MUCH food coloring that my fingers, lips and tongue were stained. Brushing my teeth twice and using a tongue scraper didn't even remove the staining. And--sorry if this is TMI-- but my toddler son's poop was also stained with food coloring, yikes! That's when I immediately threw the remaining cupcakes out. This was not the case previously, but the overuse of food coloring definitely affected the flavor and quality of the cupcakes. This is a lovely supermarket! This Stop & Shop is my go-to grocery store now, and has been for about six months. Staff is nice, the store is well-stocked and laid out logically. I like the deli specials too, and the produce is fresh and good quality. I love that the store is never too crowded, at least whenever I go. Just a nice place to shop. So why are there some bad reviews? Well several of them are many years old. And reading some of the more recent ones leaves me SMH. One person was upset that staff told her dog wasn't allowed in the store. Apparently she thought they should somehow know it was an "emotional support dog" without which she'd have a nervous breakdown in the cereal aisle. Another person was upset that staff asked him not to jam milk cartons back into the refrigerator sideways. Another reviewer was angry that she had to bend over to get bags at the self-checkout. I guess that's where people are these days with their tolerance for adversity. Anyway I'm not affiliated with the store, I'm just a regular customer who thinks they're unfairly rated on here. This one the manager, employees simply DO NOT CARE about your experience there. This Monday night,, I paid for my goods late at night and the cashier walked away. I thought she was getting bags for my goods. Literally 5 minutes she came back and said "oh you have to pay 5 cents per bag." I askeed why didnt you tell me that 5 minutes ago instead of just having me stand here. " she gave me a blank look while the manager looked on . I picked up my goods and said.."ill never come back here again" and (this was the kicker)....the manager said "fine". oh...and sorry for tripping and knocking the pile of cookies on the way out.. This store is disgusting. There is no regard for customers. The deli counter staff is the absolute worst... they are slow, dont care how long customers have to wait to be helped, 3 behind the counter and only one helping customers. One of their "managers", a large blond woman, is nasty and disrespectful to customers. The cleanliness of the store is not up to par... and i am sure a visit from the health inspector would cause a shut down. I have been a loyal Stop & Shop customer for the past 10 years (about as long as I've been adult doing my own grocery shopping) but this location drives me insane. I love self-check out but the ones here NEVER work. None of them. One time it took me almost 20 minutes to check out because I had to manually enter almost everything. Since then I've wised up and use Scan It but there are never any plastic bags (am I the only one that still uses these?) so I have to go to the front and take them from the check out area every trip. Today was the last straw though on a busy Sunday afternoon I made it through the store fairly quickly and was ready to check out with my scan it order and the scan it only register wasn't open for no apparent reason. So I got in the self checkout lines which were all 2-3 people deep and everyone was having problems. When I finally got to the front of my line my card wouldn't scan because the self-check outs are all old/cruddy (as I mentioned above). Finally I figured out that you could manually enter your card and I was on my way but it was such a pain and the lines were so long. I continue to come here because they have some things I like that the Port Chester location doesn't have and it's convenient to my gym; I am seriously considering going elsewhere though because grocery shopping shouldn't be this frustrating. read more

My mother recently bought blackberries at this Stop n Shop. She's not blind, but has some vision problems, and didn't realize they were moldy. She at them and got diarrhea. I saw the mold on the few she didn't eat. When she went back to the store with a receipt to ask for a refund, they said NO refunds. Not even for food that makes you ill. First of all the parking lot is big so you'll never have a hard time to look for a spot. It's a pretty big market. I always shop at this market so it's my to go market. Staff is friendly and I always use self checkout and if you forget your card they have a store card so that's a great thing. They have a recycling area so that also great. Overall a great place. I grocery shop here because it is so conveniently located to my apartment and truly for no other reason. Overall, the store is fine if you're getting groceries and not getting anything specific or special. However, if you have to use any in-store special department like the deli or bakery, I am sorry for you. There always is a huge line at the deli. The store implemented a computer system for ordering your deli meat and assigning you a number so you can go about your shopping until it's ready. Waiting in line takes forever (I have waited for 30 minutes before), and the machine has its own set of issues. The second time I used the ordering machine, I was called because my order was ready. I found they hadn't fulfilled the entire order because they were out of that type of turkey; they didn't bother telling me that. They told me I would have to wait in line (12 people long) to reorder and refused to help me even though I had placed my order as soon as I arrived at the store. The other part of my order was in an unsealed, unlabeled bag placed on a shelf the public had access to. I ended up buying pre-packaged lunch meats that trip. I recently ordered a cake at the bakery. What I received was hideous and very, very amateur. I have some experience cake-decorating and am by no means a professional. I also did not have time to do my own cake. First of all, the "roses" were sloppy and almost unidentifiable. The decorator at the store used the wrong cake decorating tips for the writing (a shell tip) and for the trimming around the cake (writing tip instead of a shell or star tip). They used a quotation mark instead of an apostrophe in a contraction (which was not a typo when I submitted my order). It was for a coworker's going-away party, and frankly, I was embarrassed to serve it. I also had to wait for ten minutes at the bakery before I was acknowledged and helped, and as soon as I was handed my cake, the bakery employees emptied out. Lines at check-out are always horrendously long, and if you're lucky enough to have someone assigned to bag your groceries, they do a pitiful job, piling heavier things on top of bread and eggs. Fully stocked, bright, fresh. Seemingly habitually full of customers searching for stuff they couldn't find at the Trader Joe's down the block. They have fresh flowers, fresh produce, bakery, specialty and seasonal goods as well as the usual stuff found in any large supermarket. Seafood and prepared sushi seemed fresh. It's my regular supermarket because of the gasoline discount and the Schoolbucks program. They have upgraded all the checkout equipment and it works better now. As per the earlier reviews, self-checkout used to have problems all the time. Selection and freshness is good for a medium-sized supermarket (no frills like salad bars) but the staff attitude default seems to be grumpy. I just do my shopping and get in and out. read more
