On days I don't bring lunch to work, I get an eggplant sandwich with lettuce/tomatoes or go for the eggplant on mixed greens with other veggies- that are both winners for me. The Spanish-speaking guys working on the kitchen side are always helpful and know my picky ways and the owners are friendly. Budget-friendly is not. But know this- S&W comes handy on this end in E. Tremont.

The store seems to be focusing more on expensive organic products, but unfortunately the quality control on some of the cheeses has gone down. I've purchased several cheeses here recently that tasted over-aged and strongly ammoniated. Properly aged European cheeses should have complex, nutty, earthy flavors -- not a harsh ammonia taste or smell. This has happened multiple times now. One of the biggest issues is that everything is prepackaged in plastic, so you cannot properly smell or assess the cheese before buying it. You only discover the problem once you get home and open the package. A good cheese counter should allow customers to smell or sample cheeses, especially imported and aged varieties.

I didn't have to go grocery shopping and I definitely wasn't prepared for what was about to come (as they're officially my new favorite supermarket). A supermarket that doesn't carry plastic water bottles and proudly has a sign that they haven't been selling plastic still bottle since 2011 in efforts to be able to reduce plastic, is just something we need to see more of. Plus, everything's organic! The cool part is you can bring your huge jugs of water and refill them in the entrance with alkaline water. There were also a ton of produce boxes available for you to shop in and save bags. I totally missed this and came super unprepared without even my own bags. Loved the weighed grain section where you can pay less for certain ones by buying them in bulk. You can even bring your own refillable containers for dish soap, body soap, dishwasher soap, Castile soap, laundry detergent, face wash, body lotion and more. If you don't have your own containers you can buy their glass ones and refill those. They even have a recycle center as soon as you walk in. You can donate eye glasses, batteries, shoes, natural cork and even compost! Their purpose is simple: to protect and restore the environment. This is my language. I LOVE this supermarket, only thing I wish it wasn't 1 hour away.

They are definitely pricey. I didn't see many sales either unfortunately but this market is on my way back home from time to time so I don't mind stopping in for a few things. I was able to pick up some ground beef, a package of 3 small steaks, 4 apples, some corn & hamburger buns for around $40 dollars... not too bad but if I had done a full shopping here, it would add up very quickly. Overall, I like this market and the service is always great too. The cashiers and staff are helpful and friendly which is greatly appreciated.

Now, the cashiers are in the corner and the bright customers can never figure out how to form a line or two. People are all over the place, blocking aisles, and cutting each other off.

Other than that, it's just a really large bodega with an unusual selection of herbs and chilis and other such things I don't recognize from my conservative suburban upbringing. :) Mostly I just enjoy coming here to make jokes about not being unemployed in Greenland. I/We have purchased dairy products in the past such as eggs, milk and yogurt and have had to return the items because they were either old and/or spoiled. Perhaps they have a refrigeration problem or the thermostat is kept way too low?? Just no good. We've noticed that many items on the shelves are on the older side and are outdated. Ketchup, mustard, honey and cookies to name a few. The store did not seem to be very clean the last time I stopped in. The floors were sticky and the merchandise on the shelves were very dusty. I came in to return a gallon of milk which was spoiled and the cashier was very nasty and rude to me because I did not have a receipt...meanwhile she was the one who rang me up the day before. She gave me my money back...but gave me a very hard time for no reason. This is no way to treat customers and to run a business. No way!! Normally a person could just let this go...but this is not the first time. It's happened several times. The little one (cashier) in particular has a rotten attitude. In short, all of your standards and more, with a slight emphasis on Eastern Europe/Mediterranean fare--different for this neighborhood that tends to skew Irish, but not unwelcome. More than just a supplemental place to pick up a few things, you could almost use this as a primary supermarket. What a welcome addition to this neighborhood.

However now with the Covid-19 pandemic, and the impossibility of getting a delivery from Instacart and the fact that I can call and place an order and not even have to enter the store, this is my go to location for fresh fruits and vegetables as long as you don't mind driving by so they can deliver to your car. They also have eggs and dairy as well as cold cuts. Since I know the owners and they know me, I don't have to depend on some random instacart person choosing nasty looking lettuce for my order. They pick the same nice fruit or vegetables that you would pick yourself. They do not do deliveries however.
