Typical grocery store. Came in specifically looking for nail clippers and it was a challenge to find. The aisle with personal care had dang near everything except nail care. I was able to find a travel manicure kit for $10 hanging in the aisle and if I didn't go back for the fourth time would have missed it. If I had a checked bag would have bought a few tasty kakes. Love them!!! Service was also a bit lacking, long lines even for self checkout. The store was clean and I liked the robot roaming around to notify of spills. read more

I cannot recommend this Stop n Shop specifically. It's dirty and over crowded and understaffed all the time. A random Tuesday night and I gotta wait in line cause there is one old lady cashier who is barely alive and so slow my ice cream melts. Hire more cashiers. Please. read more

Cashier at self checkout is rude and silly. The light comes on for help, she comes over with her employee card to scan and she makes sure her back is always turned so she doesn't have to say a word. I say thank you and she just walks off. Her attitude is consistently rude and dismissive. Not the right way to act if you have a position dealing with people in a public setting. read more

This is one of the worst stop n shop i have ever been in there could be 100 customers in the store and they would only have 1 registere open and the self cheek out open It will take you 20 minutes to do your shopping and a hour to check out this needs to be addressed or just close the store if your managers can't run the store. I've never left a review online but today's experience brought me here. Bought ham from the deli (pre sliced) and it was half gray meaning it was left out of refrigeration for too long and was spoiling. Also witnessed a homeless man start yelling at someone who just gave him a dollar. Make the trip elsewhere for groceries if you value your safety and overall health. I don't know why it has so many subpar reviews but I thought it was great! Finally a *normal, large supermarket* (not a quaint little food store with limited options and exorbitant prices) with a huge selection of foods and prices clearly displayed by each item. I really missed such regular supermarkets during my stay in New Haven...this was one of the few. I came here several times while I lived in the area, and particularly liked their pies, potato and egg salads, sauces and salads, and fruits (the pomegranates when they had them were delicious!) The manager, Elizabeth Vitale, left me a message, basically saying that it's my problem now and I should try to get help from my bank. I returned her call and she insisted that Stop and Shop had no responsibility. I gave customer service all the evidence that they needed. The Whalley Avenue Stop & Shop is horrible. When I was in there today someone was actually eating directly of the self-serve hot food at the deli. Also, the shelves are poorly stocked as is the bakery and the whole place is just not clean. read more

Edit: I returned from active duty in Afghanistan to be a US Army Recruiter with PTSD and a severe opium addiction and because I was using all my money to buy Oxycontin in Long Wharf, I shook down businesses for free food under the threat of a bad review citing bad customer service if they didn't give me a free sample and were rude about it. In the army, I learned to "shoot to kill" so I could be very mean in reviews where a person rudely turned down my request for a free sample. I think a lot of local businesses caught on to what I was doing and started contaminating food, so I also gave 1-star reviews if I thought a business intentionally gave me food poisoning, but I don't blame because I was being such a jerk in the community to local businesses. Now that I'm in Narcotic's Anonymous and 3 months clean of opiates and all drugs and alcohol, part of working the program is doing a fearless moral inventory and am adjusting all the businesses I gave 1-star reviews to up to 5-stars. There aren't lot of possibilities in New Haven when you don't have a car. One of the most complicated things to do is to buy grocery and products. This Stop & Shop is near Yale campus, so if you live near the campus you can walk to it and there is also a Yale shuttle that stops just there on weekends, so if you live farther, you can shop here too. Isn't the cheapest supermarket, but it's really convenient if you have the Stop&Shop Card, which makes you save money in several products (also I recommend to install their app on your mobile to get extra coupons) and also rewards to buy gas at the station. What I like about this supermarket is that you can choose between lots of products, different brands and prices, unlike the mini markets near my apartment. You have vegetables and fruits, meats, seafood, bakery, grocery, frozen food, etc. read more

I can't say enough bad things about this store. The entire experience was horrible and as other reviewers have said, feels like a post-apocalyptic world. The store itself was okay, but not very clean and I waited about half an hour in line to check out. The store was absolutely packed, and there was only one register open with a line wrapping halfway around the store. When I got to the check out, the cashier and bagger just stared at me blankly and I waited for them to get off their phones. The bagger refused to bag my groceries, and just stood there on her phone while I bagged my own. It was extremely uncomfortable. Oh, I went there again against my better judgment 30 minutes before their posted closing time and they had already closed. Never again. read more

For the location and price, this is not a bad store. It's not the poshest but you can get all your essentials here. It's the closest grocery store to the Yale area and I always come here to get Milk, fruits, veggies, chips, coffee K cups, etc. Plenty of parking outside and the hours are good. The check out lines can get chaotic and people don't always follow the express lane rules lol. Each time I go here, I swear it's the last time, but time passes and I decide to try again. I shopped here this afternoon. I grabbed some raspberries and a bottle of soda, and got in one of the 2 staffed lines in the store. There were 3 people ahead of me. I emerged 35 minutes later. Just in time to be caught up in the monsoon that I was trying to avoid. I can't help feeling like the management in this store takes advantage of the fact that there is no competition, and the majority of the clientele have little disposable income and/or transportation. The lack of cashiers, and the speed with which mine moved, would never fly in a more affluent neighborhood. Conversely, they have at least 15 self-check stations. This store's manager needs to hire more people (extra karma points if they live in the neighborhood), and create a more positive experience for its customers and staff. read more

New Haven is a food desert, and this is the best it has to offer. Unfortunately, that is the only good thing I can say about this store, as it pales in comparison to nearby Stop and Shops such as the one in Amity. The produce here is especially lacking, and it at times seems to be actively encouraging the consumption of unhealthy food simply by virtue of there being no other options in the store, regardless of current supply chain issues. If there were any better stores nearby, this would get one star. read more

I shopped here quite a few times during my two years in New Haven, just because of the location. One star for proximity to campus. Another star for being relatively new and clean. Other than that, I found shopping here to be absolutely miserable. For instance, someone was shot in the parking lot one day. How's that to start? Furthermore, the service is the worst I have ever encountered in this type of establishment. The lines are always long. The cashiers never speak to me and often text while ringing up items. One day, they would only take cash because the machines were down...isn't Stop and Shop a major grocery chain? Really? Another day, the cashier fought with me over the price of bread. The loaf I picked up had a red sticker readying "SPECIAL! $1.99." I commented when it rang up as $3.99. She insisted that despite the prominent sticker, the higher price was indeed correct. This supermarket is well stocked. The prices are very inexpensive. There is a large selection of items and foods for purchase here. The staff members here are friendly and nice, very helpful. Would recommend for families with kids and large groups. read more

Buying meat from this stop and shop is kind of like a fun and exciting game, where you have to guess what was left out at room temperature somewhere along the supply chain. On multiple occasions I've bought chicken that is very clearly bad after opening the package--despite being days ahead of the sell-by date. Unfortunately, there's not a great way to figure this out unless you're really good at smelling through plastic. The lines are super long and the cashiers always ignore me pretty hardcore, but at least the produce is alright. They also have this discount fish freezer where you can get some pretty gnarley salmon from Russia for like one dollar. The bottom line: it's super close to east rock, you'll probably go there like once a week, and we should all be happy that we don't live in a food desert, I guess. read more

My fiancee has a SERVICE DOG,She has disabilities.We used to go to THIS Stop&Shop quite frequently.But,one day when my fiancee went in there with her service dog,she was repeatedly harrassed by a couple of employees(names withheld for good reason),the manager was NOT much better..OVER A TINY POODLE MIX DOG...WITH SERVICE I.D. This grocery store is always clean and well stocked. The customer service has been great every time I've been here. The cashiers are friendly and the staff people ask me if I need help finding anything. The lines can be long if you go on a Sunday afternoon, but that's true at any grocery store. They have great seafood, bakery items, produce and flowers. The variety of produce is awesome; I've tried several new foods that I've never tasted before from their produce section just because everything looks so fresh and delicious I can't resist. I love the natural foods section. The gas station in the parking lot is also super convenient. Before I had my car in town, I would take the Yale shuttle that drops you right at the door or get delivery. It's super convenient. read more

No, it isn't very safe -- it's in the inner city, outside your little bubble. You'd have known that before going, if you'd shown any curiosity about the city you were living in.
