We hired Alan (also known as Alec, he will go by a different name with different people depending…read moreon what negative comments he has online about him at the moment) for a major project over the past year and paid him more than $450,000 in total. He completed his final project with us yesterday. Per our contract I was supposed to withhold 6k until the project was fully completed and we did a walk through. Against my better judgement I agreed to pay him $4300 of that payment early because he was low on funds. I felt bad for him what can I say. So at that point I still owed him a remaining balance of $1,700 that I fully intended to pay him once he finished the final touches on some trim and other misc. things. After about 4 weeks of no progress on those misc. items, I had to start bugging him every day for updates on when things would be completed. Fast forward another 2 weeks or so, he finally completed the last item. As soon as the work was complete Alan/Alec called me 4 times in a row. I was busy at work so didn't have time to answer. I got off work that evening around 7pm and we had some friends over for a baseball game, so I didn't have time to call Alan/Alec back yet. That same evening, Alan showed up at our home unannounced around 8 p.m., demanding payment. He arrived with an angry and confrontational attitude, and when I answered the door, the situation quickly escalated. I was rightfully frustrated that he showed up requesting to get paid in cash right in that moment, I tried to close the door, Alan shoved it back open and attempted to force his way inside. I pushed him back. The confrontation that followed was witnessed by multiple people and captured on our Ring camera (posting the video here so people can see what Alan/Alec looks like in case he changes his name again in the future. He also brought his son with him, which suggests the visit was planned and deliberate (what a sad decision on his part as a father) Throughout the course of our projects, Alan proved to be unreliable and difficult to work with. He frequently made decisions without our approval, even after we clearly asked him to confirm with us before proceeding. He ignored instructions, made careless mistakes, and overlooked details that any attentive professional should have caught. Despite these issues, we continued to pay him on time and treat him respectfully. At one point, due to a mistake made by his own office transferring funds into the wrong account, we had to double pay him ahead of schedule to keep the project moving. A $60,000 payment temporarily became $120,000 because he said he couldn't wait for the transfer to resolve. We also lived next door to the project site, and it quickly became clear that without our daily oversight, the home would have been a complete mess. His team often lacked direction and made careless errors when left unsupervised. Alan can be very friendly when trying to earn your business, but that professionalism disappears once the contract is signed. His behavior at the end of this project was completely unprofessional, inappropriate, and unacceptable. We've always paid him promptly and treated him with respect, so this incident was shocking and deeply disappointing. We strongly caution anyone considering working with him to proceed carefully, get everything in writing, don't deviate at all from the contract even if he tries to make you feel bad for him or play on your empath.

As with any big job, there were a few corrections at the end (not many!). What is important and appreciated is that they addressed these immediately and without question. We ended up going with his choices and the results look outstanding. We couldn't be more pleased. Throughout the process, Alec was always responsive and answered all of our questions thoroughly and honestly. He made what could have been a difficult process very easy. These guys are great! We searched for months and months trying to find a source for our fireplace…read morehearth tile. Running into a bunch of issues where the only option seemed to be that we would have to piece it together using regular tiles and try to cut them ourselves. We went to multiple slab yards only to be told that we have to have a fabricator/contractor buy an entire slab and then mill it for us. Then when we would find fabricator shops or contractors, they would tell us to go to the stone yard because they only do the cutting and installation, not sell the material. I thought we were just out of luck for our 18" x 60" (pretty standard) fireplace hearth solution. We basically got the run around for months and many places did not even return our call/inquiry. Then we found Chiarini Marble. They have been in business for almost 40 years and had typically been word of mouth. These guys do some really custom high end work so we thought they would just tell us the same thing as all the other places or be way out of our small remodel budget. We met with them and they were more than happy to take on our small project. Since they do so much stone and tile work, they had all kinds of options for finishes and we settled on a solid Calacatta Marble that they had a remnant piece of from a larger job. They came out and measured on Tuesday and by Thursday afternoon, the marble was installed and looks amazing!! They fabricated it and installed it in 48 hours! We couldn't be happier with the result and can't wait to install the surround and finally be done. They milled an eased edge on it, delivered and installed it for a total of $575 ($425 for the piece and only $150 for installation)! Now we have a really nice solid piece of Italian Marble that was custom made for us. I would recommend them to anyone and everyone. If you are on the search for stone work or fabrication, these guys will provide exceptional service, very competitive prices and work with you on the best option for your project. Other companies will cherry pick the jobs they want to bid to make sure they are "big enough" or "worth their time". Do yourself a favor and give Chiarini a call!

I had already spent a day looking in another area. I learned about RTA - Ready To Assemble, cabinets; the places that were not over a $1,000 were RTA. Today, Cabinets 2 You was my first stop due to location. I never went to the rest! Why bother, Hal has the knowledge, was able to whittle me down from my dreams to what was available, used creativity, the final looked good, well made with wood and good working hardware. I wanted a 36" vanity to put a sink in one side with drawers all the way up on the other and I was going to install it 2" away from the wall and tile it in so the counter was deeper. I ended up with using two kitchen base cabinet parts and made just what I wanted as kitchen cabinets are 3" deeper than bathroom and taller too, but that will be OK. As I said, Hal knows his stuff and was able to put my order together in no time at a great price and then offered a discount if paid in cash.
