I've been happy to do business with these kind folks as both a buyer AND a seller. I have purchased and sold inventory for my business, and I have also purchased and sold things for my home. Things here are very easy to understand. If you are looking to sell things, they'll buy items from you outright OR sell items on consignment for you and split the proceeds. If you are looking to shop and buy some great stuff, they have it available. For selling, I just put everything into my vehicle and take it down there and they do the rest. If you have big stuff or a lot of stuff, call them up and they'll send someone out to make a deal with you. For buying, I like to stop by there once a week or so and just walk around. I always seem to find something I didn't know I needed! You can always ask anyone there about the process and they will explain the details. It's a simple process to bid online and you might get things for less than you were thinking. Look, if you are unfamiliar with the auction format of buying and selling, this is a great place to learn. It's really not difficult or complicated, and the payoff can be huge. Unbelievable experience. I participated in an auction, called to make my payment and arrange for a pickup. My Bluetooth connection delayed my call by a few seconds. A woman named Megan picked up the phone and impatiently told me to "F*** off and die." I've been a customer for years and have never had an issue, so the low ratings here make no sense. That is, unless the people leaving the low ratings are unfamiliar with auctions. I been buying at auctions, from hundreds if auction houses across the country and have only on a few occasions run into a poorly run auction house. Even then, it could have just been that I was talking to someone who was having a bad day. Well, I finally ran into an issue here. I should have viewed the item before bidding, the preview trip is 4 hours round trip. So, the issue was because of not previewing as they (and most auctioneers) highly recommend. LARRY shows up and he is a character I encountered when I posted an inquiry on an estate sale site. On his first visit he offered $5 yes five dollars to take my high end name brand pieces. Today, I asked him to leave without reviewing the hand carved 19th century chairs or the Baker curio (exactly same piece) that is currently listed by a vendor on Chairish for $2,200. I wish there were more yelp reviews few years ago when the seller from this location persuaded me to sell my beautiful black Yamaha piano that I had since I was 10 yrs old for less than $300..... (i know, what was I thinking?!) The piano was in really good condition too since I got it tuned every year and took really good care of it. I only planned to sell a couple sofa chairs, bed which was pretty new, a beautiful wooden dining table set with 6 chairs, and a wooden coffee table. The guy came to our home and offered $150 for everything.. and then all of a sudden said he would give us $350 if we threw in my piano. He kept telling me it was a super good deal and pushing me to take the deal. Having no idea of the value of my piano (my parents bought it for me) I made the horrible decision to let them take everything for a couple hundred bucks..... worst decision of my life. Looking back to it now, its so clear that they were just looking for ways to make money off of people's homes and taking advantage of people who aren't used to selling valuables/belongings. I know I could've been more smart about it too, but its very clear that they are NOT honest and will con people to sell cherished items to maximize their profit. These people are horrible and nasty. I called a few days ago to see if they were interested in a houseful of furniture. As instructed, I sent an email to jj, who is in charge of my region. Three days went by, and I called to follow up, and I sent jj a follow up message. Nothing. So I just called again, and the so-called receptionist told me, "If you don't like our company, then maybe you can look elsewhere." I replied, "No wonder you have terrible Yelp reviews." And then she hung up on me. My point is, if jj was not interested in my furniture, then he should have written a thirty second note thanking me, and saying he was not interested. read more

I had heard these guys were con artists before i went- and I went anyway. They ran up a couple of bids on me.... calling ghost bids against me to run up the prices. So... I went one week.... made a proxy bid on an item and stood hiding in the back and watched as the owner- the crabby old dude- started the bid at $5- no one else bid and he ran the bid OVER the amount I paid. His trollish assistant cleared her throat and he dropped the bid back to my $25 proxy and closed the sale. No one bid on the item but me which means I should have gotten it for $5. He knew who I was ( the crabby old man has an amazing memory for faces and bidder numbers) and I stepped out from my hiding spot looked him in the face and said REALLY?- and he cursed me for being stupid before going on to the next item. Unless you LIKE getting screwed over don't do business with this place. I have sold things here too and he sends the good stuff to his friends and closes the bidding before others can get in- resulting in me getting $100 for something two different people told me they would have bid up to $500 if he didn't close the auction early. Not only does south coast screw the bidders they screw the sellers. I went there almost every wed for three and a half years and saw him do the same thing dozens if not hundreds of times. And God forbid you correct him by saying " WHo made that last bid against me?... I didn't see that bid so who else is bidding?" When no one stands up you get called a "stupid fat ass" and are told if you keep messing around you aren't welcomed back. They are also famous for putting stacks of records in glass display cases with the most over inflated estimated value of the recordsd I have ever seen. SOme guy paid $1250 for 15 scratched up Grateful dead records that were not first pressings- were scratched up badly and had- obviously- fake autographs on them... Unless Jerry garcia was signing autos with a sharpie that didn't get invented until after he died. I would rather hire a wood chipper and toss my items in there than take them here to sell and I would suggest you consider doing the same as at least with the wood chipper the folks will bring it to you- not try to rip you off on the price and certainly not call you a fat ass when you catch them trying to rip you off. I had held off on writing this for over a year because I wanted to see if the yelp reviews would get any better. But they have gotten worse and... here I am. I mean- if you are a sub who is into being humiliated and financially pimped out of your items worth this is TOTALLY the place for you. I truly dislike writing negative reviews, but due to my to my unpleasant experience yesterday I feel that it's more than necessary. I was tasked with selling some very expensive items (Royal China, Hummel Figurines and a rare antique radio). When I googled antique stores, for some strange reason South Coast Auction was the second link to pop up. Before I arrived to the South Coast Auctions's warehouse in Santa Ana, I called them to make sure that there was a need to buy or auction my items. The lady I spoke to on the phone was very nice and friendly. She did inform me that I wouldn't get the full price for my items, which I was already aware of and completely okay with. Upon arrival, I met with the owner (I believe his name was Bill). He greeted me and the other person I was with in a very rude manner. He then tells us to put our stuff on this supposed "cart." The cart that he wanted us to put our stuff on was an autopsy cart that is used in the medical examiners office at the morgue. I'm not even joking. My opinion was already negatively skewed within the first 2 minutes of being there just for the fact that we were using a used gurney that wheels the deceased. As we put our boxes on the autopsy cart, we rolled the stuff into the warehouse and are told to wait in a confined area. Bill then comes out and says that he can't give us pricing estimates because our stuff is not out of the boxes, yet no one gave us instruction on what to do once we got into the warehouse. We quickly rushed to take out a few of our high priced items to show Bill. Immediately he starts to low ball us with numbers that are higher at a garage sale. He quotes us 40 dollars for a $975.00 dollar-1950's antique German radio, which we had shopped around at two other antique stores and were at least offered $475.00. From what I gathered from Bill's ridiculous quotes is that he tries to push you to auction your items. He tells you what he believes they will sell for, which is the lowest number possible. He does this so that when he auctions your items, he can ask for the highest possible number to where he can make a huge profit margin. Ultimately, you will get lump change for your high priced item. I could go on and on with this review, but I don't feel like wasting anymore of my time. Bottom line is, don't go here because the property is filthy, the business seems extremely shady and you have to wheel your items on an autopsy cart. I ended up leaving that joke of a business after 15 minutes because I refused to be ripped off. P.s. if you are trying to buy or sell antiques, don't waste your time because they do not sell REAL antiques. read more

You have to remember these are auctions and items can sell for any amount. Also, factor in the auction house takes 30% of whatever the item sells for and that affects the "bottom dollar" too. From a buyers perspective, auctions can be a good thing (buy at a low price), or a bad thing (pay way too much). Either way, they are NOT for the fainthearted! While I have no proof of this at all, I can't shake the feeling that during a couple auctions I watched, the auctioneer bumped up the price a few times without anyone actually bidding. It all goes so fast, I think they could easily do that without anyone realizing it, but again I have no proof if this. OVERALL: Auctions aren't for everyone. You must KNOW what you're willing to pay, factor in the buyer's premium and stick with a max bid limit. I'm kind of shocked at these negative reviews, because that was not my experience. Although I dealt with them over a year ago, a friend asked me for a recommendation and my experience was positive enough to look them up. Let me say first and foremost - NOBODY WANTS YOUR OLD STUFF. They didn't want mine and they don't want yours. This is not unique to SCA. I had a houseful of beautiful, expensive, Queen Anne cherry furniture that needed to GO because I was downsizing. My kids wouldn't take it, I could not sell it on LetGo, CraigsList, etc., the used furniture stores didn't want it, multiple charities declined to come take it as a donation. Every organization out there has a warehouse full of old furniture just like it and they don't want more. If you think you are going to get top dollar for pieces you bought 25 years ago, you are not being realistic. SCA was courteous enough to come and have a look. I gave it ALL to them for free, just to be rid of it. That was not the outcome I hoped for, but it served the purpose. If you are in a similar situation, I suggest you contact them. read more

If you want something to do after work whether it's to kill traffic or just because you're bored, stop by at South Coast Auction to see an interesting and fun furniture auction every Wednesday from 4pm-? They can go as late as midnight. I'm not sure the extent of where they get their stuff but sometimes we see the same stuff repeatedly. Mostly old, antique, and wooden furniture. I was told that they could be from model homes, excess from stores, consignments items, or donations from the riches. My friend loves to go to this auction that she actually salivates every Wednesday morning to look at the upcoming items on their website. She has successfully furnished her condo with very good condition items for as little as $5... and some of these were nice wide fluffy chairs. She said if you wait and check their items often... you'll eventually find what you want. It is advisable to see the items in person during daytime to see the condition of the desired items. It is also advisable to write down the maximum price of what you are willing to bid and/or do a research of retail value of that item prior to the auction as auction is an emotional event that you can easily outbid yourself. If you see something you like but don't have the time to attend the auction itself, you have the option of putting in a silent bid where they would call you the next day if you have won it. For any items, you would want to add their lot fee and any additional charges as they can add up pretty quickly. Once you have won the item you have the option to pick it up at a later date. This is helpful if you don't have a truck like I do. Here are the things you need to watch out for: a) Items are often sold in sets or bundles which may not necessarily go together. They do this to rid of small items together and speed up the auction. So you might be bidding for 5 items when you really want just the one item. This is a disadvantage if they were bundles of most ugly with 1 pretty thing. b) There are multiple auctions that may go simultaneously, i.e. appliance, outdoor furniture, indoor furniture, office furniture, etc. They are set to run on a different schedule but this may not be the case. So you may miss out if there's certain items in different departments that you were eyeing for. c) Listen and verify the bidding amount as the auctioneer's voice may sound confusing and/or some of them would force you to buy. (- 1 star). You can ask them to start over, otherwise. They are pretty flexible on this. All in all, this is a very fun place and the roach coach sells pretty good unhealthy foods. Most of the times I don't like the items they are selling (-1 star) because I prefer contemporary designs, which are rare to come by. Once, they had a Chinese theme which looked like a Chinese restaurant threw up in there. Or, they have all hotels stuff or gaming items like slot machines. It looked like Vegas just moved in. But, I've also seen an $8000 retail of 6-burner oven with a grill and convection oven with a side rotisserie and separate backsplash fans sold for $1500. The oven was barely used as we didn't notice any grease stains. However, not many could buy it because it was too large. And, they sold an oversize stainless steel fridge that was sold for $1100 that looked like it came from the same house. So, check it out... bring a friend or two and have a super fun day. They have a roach coach selling lots of foods that you can practically have a party. Get to know the guys who work there for they can do a lot of favors for you. And, happy bidding! :) read more

We were moving out of our offices and I had sold them 18 mesh offices chairs at a very cheap rate of $10.00 chair just because I just needed them out of the office. Fifteen minutes later my husband's partner came in and was very upset that we sold two of these particular type chairs because they were a gift of special meaning to him. Of course I didn't realize but it didn't matter he was devastated and I felt horrible. I called South Coast Auction immediately and explained the special situation and asking them to return them back to me. I would certainly come and pick them up immediately and double what I sold,them for. The receptionist was very understanding and she would call Ernie, the gentleman who had just picked them up, and explain my situation and call me back. She called back and told me that Ernie said that if I wanted my chairs back I would have to come to the next auction and bid on them myself. While I understand this is a business but this all took place in a matter of 20 minutes. Of course I will never use them again and certainly not recommend them to anyone. According to Ernie, they have more furniture than they know what to do with and a simple act of compassion would have mended a broken heart but that is not what this company is about. Be careful as you might never get paid a penny, or even owe money at the end. We have been trying to get paid on a $33,000 sale that sca agreed to pay for a large lot of merchandise that was on May 5 2015. We were later told that we would receive $0 and now owed $15,000 for their time and expenses. Talk about a dog and pony show. Maybe better called a scam and sham show....we should have read yelp in advance shame on me but if i do read this in advance with doing a deal DO NOT!!!!!! If you read this afterwards then hopefully follow some action items i list out as most stop at yelp.... So what to do Lawsuit or small claims - yes BBB - no Funny that you can not file a BBB report as they will not take the complaint as it involves collection of money from a business. If i would have paid them a fee for services rendered then yes they would investigate. Police: not much they can other than file a report District Attorney. So our next step (after we filed a police report for fraud) is we have asked the District Attorneys office to review the case as from consumer fraud laws and might be a way to go. State of California requires a bond to be posted and without that bond they can not operate. You can make a claim to the bond thru thru CA Secretary of STATE - hard to find out how but its there. AAAP. Finally if Billy Humphries a member of the american auctioneers association has violated ANY auction ethics or rules you should complain to the auctioneers association directly and file a grievance. The lot was china figurines and they repeatedly offered to help with paper to wrap them or carry them to the car. Be careful what you sell. SCA charges a hefty amount for items that don't sell and have to be disposed of. I'm not saying this is wrong; they're not a furniture dumping ground, but just be aware that if your goods don't sell, you might owe THEM money. I think if it were my auction, I would probably do the same. They are not the Goodwill. With market prices down, buying can be tremendous. It's a fun atmosphere, and you never know what's going to be going up on the block. The SCA Crew are extremely friendly and easy to work with. Only complaint is that at at the end of the auction, the lines to check out are very long, and with only one window open to check out, it can be a drag. Overall, I recommend SCA for an evening of fun, and GREAT bargains!!! read more

As a buyer, I think this is a great place! Granted, "Buyer Beware", but still lots of fun, interesting items. First of all, no guarantees, etc. don't believe a word the auctioneer says! Judge for yourself what it's worth! You can get a lot of stuff below market value if you are disciplined. Do your research, or let it go! One of a kind items. The later you stay, the cheaper the prices... Some auctioneers are hard to understand, so listen closely.... Also, be wary of the ghost bidder. I've bought at this auction for at least the past 5 years. I've never had an issue with any item I've ever purchased here, except for this week. I purchase a guaranteed working washer and dryer. I brought the washer and dryer to my house and they didn't work. I contacted South Coast Auction let them know the issue, they issued a full refund back to me immediately, sent someone to pick up the washer and dryer from my home and took care of everything. I'm not naive to the auction business and sometimes things don't work as one might hope... I'm okay with that as long as there is a resolution. South Coast Auction had the resolution in an extremely timely manner and I'm 100% satisfied with their service. I will continue to buy from South Coast Auction for many years to come!! I've been coming to South Coast Auction for almost 30 years, and I put up with it all the time because sometimes you could get a good deal on office furniture, closeouts etc. But they are basically criminals in my opinion. They always are bidding on "air" meaning when they see that someone is interested in something they jack the price up by calling out non existent bids, in the frenzy of the auction people will bid more because they don't want to miss out on something that they're interested in but to their detriment, they end up paying a lot more than they should for items. Also the auctioneers will claim that a product is in much better shape than it actually is and they will even claim that it is an actual antique when it isn't, that it is made somewhere else than it actually was, or even that it works when it doesn't, among various other scams, falsehoods, and plain old dickish moves. One of the owners Billy is one of the nastiest, meanest, unscrupulous people I've had the misfortune to meet and CAN NOT be trusted for anything. Don't just take my opinion, look at the other reviews. What kind of business gets 2 stars out of five on Yelp. Why would you want to do business with a company like this. But also ask around. ANYONE who knows the business or has had dealings with this company over the years knows that they are about as scummy as you can get. They have the worst reputation in the business. Obviously this is all my humble opinion, but take it from someone who has had many many negative experience with this company, stay away from them if possible, they're is plenty of other avenues to find what you're looking for and not get screwed over. They're not worthy of anything as high as a one star rating. This place provided one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. The supervisor/owner (some wretched dude named Billy) was an a-hole from the start. Prior to bringing my items to this so-called company, I spoke with at least two employees (one named Meggan, I can't recall the other). I was told the company takes a wide range of items and encouraged me to bring everything I have of value. I loaded a moving truck with enough items to fill two rooms. Once there, I was told my items weren't wanted despite being told in advance that I should bring my items. The worst part was the rude, unapologetic (and I would say borderline racist) stance taken by some dude Billy. If you treat your consumers and folks that give the inventory to you to sell like crap, it speaks to not only how sorry your business is but also how sorry of an individual you are in general. That's directed straight at Billy. I could write on and one about this sorry company. The bottom line is, I would give away items before I gave anything to this company to make a dollar. They Take Advantage of You! My wife contacted them to sell a couple antique items when I wasn't home. They preyed on her weakness of wanting to get rid of a few things, knowing that what they were taking was worth a lot more money. They don't care if they're ripping you off! As they came across more items, they didn't offer any more money, they just took and took and took. When I came home and saw it all gone, I was blown away! $200 for a large antique chest of drawers that were tongue and grooved, an antique vanity, an antique cast iron pot belly fire place, antique cows milk can, antique sewing machine, antique iron, etc. etc. etc. ... the list goes on and on and on. All For $200??! The chest of drawers alone was worth 10x that! Be honest and give a fair price. Or be honest and tell her they can auction these items for her and get a split of the profits. Just be honest and not take advantage of people. She went to go get it back, but go ahead and keep the vanity and fireplace ... she came home with everything but the chest of drawers, vanity and fireplace (they kept the chest of drawers!) and ... get this ...
