This is a go-to for us and many of the locals. Located immediately across from the KDH Lifeguard Station. We often walk here in the morning, pick-up breakfast and sometimes lunch sandwiches, and then head over to enjoy the food on the deck lookout to the beach. The deli is a Boars Head shop and only quality ingredients are used. Meat is shaved thin and everything is highly customizable - sauces, bread, and so on. The shop itself has an eclectic assortment of merchandise and is fun to walk around offering a lot of odd stuff including chips you likely never heard of before. The deli sandwiches are a bit on the pricier side, particularly for the OBX where you can get great deals on subs at other establishments like Harris Teeter. Also, the ordering process is antiquated and sloppy. You order over the phone and then often have to wait in line with other customers ordering in order to pick-up the food. The weather was awesome so we decided to grab some sandwiches to enjoy on the beach. There were 4 of us, so we called our order in. I got a Reuben made with turkey instead of corned beef, another friend got the Reuben, my husband got a special that had roast beef and baby spinach. He loved it. And the last person ended up with a turkey sandwich. They use Boars Head products so everything was quality. In addition to our sandwiches, we grabbed chips, potato salad and drinks. This place totally lives up to the hype on here. I mean, wow... The sandwiches are great. First off, they use Boar's Head deli meats, which is a great start. Secondly, they use DUKE'S MAYO, which is the mayo to end all mayos, and should be putting Hellmann's to sleep sometime in the near future if they continue with their ad campaign and people realize brand loyalty isn't necessary. Thirdly, they have a variety of things that can go on the sandwiches. WIN! As others said, the sandwiches of the day are basically ridiculous piles of awesome stuff. My girlfriend had some Jamaican thing that was jerk turkey, vidalia onions, dijon mustard, fig sauce and some other stuff... Wow, it was impressive! I picked my own sandwich out of their list of stuff, and it was also amazing! They even have great stuff for kids here: PB&J, PB&Banana, PB&B&Honey! The bread they use for any of these sandwiches is just absolutely perfect. And if you need a good beverage to go with your lunch, they've got that covered, too. The wall next to the deli has about 8 cases of different beverages (3 of them are beer) of all types, including delicious RC Cola in a glass bottle made with REAL sugar! And if that wasn't enough, they have an aisle+ (literally an aisle plus more randomly throughout the store) of hot sauces! They also have an entire rack of interesting condiments, including Jack Daniels new line of sauces. On the other end of the store is a gift shop where you can get just about anything in the world that has OBX or Outerbanks inscribed on it. This is a cute little store that is non-descript from the outside... I mean, you see the signs and it has billboards and stuff that advertise it, and even a marquee that talks about how great they are (US NEWS rated them the #5 thing to do in OBX!), but it's still just a little shack on the side of the road, basically... And once you get in, it's amazing. If you're having trouble finding it, look for the Exxon sign - it is basically the only gas station on the beach road (RT12) around there. read more

Bottom Line: A surprisingly diverse general store attached to Exxon gas pumps. I went to Stop N Shop for some craft beer but I stayed the marvel at the variety of stuff sold here. To give you an idea of the types of things you can find here, here is a list of the items I personally pursued: -Ladies dresses by Mud Pie -Rainbow brand flip flops -Wine and craft beer -Deli meats and cheeses including sandwiches to go -Coca-Cola and Pepsi soda fountains -Folgers coffee station -Fishing gear/tackle -Sun Bum sunscreen -Snacks and grocery staples -Beach toys -Puzzles and other games I was amazed by the variety offered at this convenience store and especially that they carry some nicer brands like Mud Pie, Rainbow and Sun Bum. Stop N Shop's deli is too legit, and while you're waiting for your sandwich order there's plenty more to take in: shelves stocked with snacks a plenty and lots of fun/tempting local foodstuffs (like jams, jellies, nuts, chips, hot sauces, etc.). There's also a dedicated fishing tackle area, the ubiquitous hermit crab zone, and lots of other miscellaneous souvenirs (I got a "Outer Banks" Iron Maiden-font bumper sticker), plus cigs, bevs, and more. Worth noting: there's really nice public beach access facilities across the street with parking, showers, bathrooms and things so you're all set for a low key, delicious day at the beach should you be breezin' thru for a spell or just looking for a few hours break away from your crazy family or whatever's got you ruffled. On this visit, I snagged a new pair of Cobian flip flops and a corned beef sandwich from their deli. Huge selection of all the name brand flip flops! The deli is awesome! They use all Boar's Head deli meat. The sandwiches are fresh made, sliced at the time of ordering and wrapped in white butcher paper. The price is even friendlier! From cigarettes to hermit crabs. Koozies to magnets. Hot sauce to tackle. You must try one of their 5 special sandwiches of the day. For many years I patronized Stop n Shop and I never had problem. Would occasionally use the deli. Picked up little things needed for the beach. Stuff like that. But recently I had a very bad experience with the store in ordering a keg for a party. There was a mix up over the size I needed. The tap they provided was broken and I wound up having to buy a (non-returnable) brand new one. No matter how long we poured, we only got cups that were 2/3rds foam. This whole fiasco wound up costing me over $200.00. I wrote a letter (on paper, no less) expressing my frustration with how this whole transaction went down. I hand delivered it to the manager They did not bother with the the courtesy of a reply. That's not how you treat your customers, not if you want them to come back. read more

We've grabbed a sammi several times here over the years. Solid food. The process is a little haphazard. You order at the counter, wait several minutes whether they are busy or not, and pay at either cash register. There's plenty to look at while you're waiting-- $100 flip flops and the like. This place always amazes me. It seems like just a normal stop and shop until you walk inside. It's filled to the brim with beach essentials and beach superessentials - champagne, high end chocolates, and thai food. Where they really shine is their sandwich counter with Boar's Head products. Recently tried their Wright Monumental Club that had so much flavor, a hearty hearty helping of turkey/ham, and a spicy mayo, that I could only eat 1/2 of it. I've always had great sandwiches and they're extremely reasonable (considering beach prices), for example their Monumental Club was only $6.29. If you're at a rental home or hotel within walking distance you should definitely check this place out for sundries and a great sandwich. read more

Best sandwiches in ALL of the outer banks hands down, even for a nice breakfast bagel. Priced well and right on beach road so you have a meal while spending the day in the sun. Store is good with a wide variety of items. The Deli Counter is awful. Do not waste your time trying to get a sandwich. We stood at counter for 45 minutes (there is no seating) after ordering sandwiches which were prepared incorrectly. When I ordered "no lettuce, no tomato, no mayo" the employee had me repeat it several times and wrote it down. I took the sandwiches back to the counter and asked that the sandwiches be fixed immediately or a refund given because I did not want to wait another 45 minutes for my sandwich to be redone. At this point there was probably 20 people waiting on food. He kept asking me what I wanted on it and started to write it down again. Then he rolled his eyes and said I never told him that's how I wanted my sandwich. He then argued with me over what was ordered. I told him to give me a refund. He walked with me up to the register still arguing that I ordered a certain sandwich. Yes, I ordered that sandwich but without lettuce, tomato or mayo! I don't think they can comprehend any special requests. The paper menu at the register says the sandwich I ordered comes on an 8 inch sub roll. It was on white sandwich sliced bread and looked like a sandwich I could make at home. His attitude was horrible and the fact that he argued and wouldn't make right on their mistake is unacceptable. Very poor customer service! If you like waiting for 45 minutes for a sandwich not prepared correctly or as described on the menu this is the place for you. read more
