You know I already do not really love the location in Charlottesville Virginia. But I figured the quality control has to be much better near its home location. Bot was I wrong. It's hard for me to put into words how disappointed I am in this franchises downturn. What used to be one of the most iconic spots in the outer banks (at least my view of it as a kid) is so underwhelming. The donuts were not good and the coffee was flat out the worst one I have ordered in years. The staff here seemed either overworked or undertrained. Simple tasks took them forever to complete. Donuts were done in under 10 minutes but two coffees took nearly 30 to be completed. And like I said you tell they were rushed. Worst coffee I've had in years. Would not come back. I am only giving this more than a 1 star because I hope this was an off day (and part of me just wants to hold on to this franchises glory days). read more

This place was definitely well put together. The lady on the register was very helpful and the seemed to baking and creating the magic at a considerable pace. I thought this place was only in this area so I made it a point to come get these very talked about donuts. Luckily I went early because the line was almost out the door when I left. I got back to my BNB and took a bite of my donut breakfast sandwich and tasted heaven. Everything from this place was magic and I had no complaints. Every donut was soft, warm and full of flavor. Donuts and iced caramel macchiato were great. Cashier Kaylie Z was very nice and upbeat even while I was ordering a dozen donuts of all different kinds. Only waited 5, less than 10 minutes for donuts to come out at around 10am on a summer Friday. It is nice to wait inside with a lot of their merch around and not too small and cramped. read more

I got a half dozen during Valentines weekend. I got chocolate explosion, coffee cake, cookies n cream, blueberry streusel, bacon in the sun, and valentines limited donut (I forgot the name). I loved the donut itself. It was fresh made to order. It came out relatively fast and the staff were nice and friendly. I came at a perfect time. There was no line and I was able to take my time picking what I wanted and was offered suggestions as well. So yummy!! I also got a bacon, egg, cheese on a donut. It was also very yummy. The iced latte and caramel macchiato was a tad too sweet. Gave me the sugar rush and I definitely crashed later in the afternoon! read more

I am a donut fan. More than that, I am a donut snob. I admit it. I have my ranked list of best donuts in the country... Duck is on that list - way at the top. My family loves the build your own donut approach. We love that they come out warm. We love that they taste so delicious! What we don't love is that Duck Donuts has expanded across America and not yet come to Indiana... Oh well, it make them more special when we go to OBX and get them from their birthplace. Kill Devil Hills location has great service - gave use their favorites when we came in. And the inside was clean. There was a line of people waiting for donuts and they got through quickly. Great experience - ordered two per person on this visit (could have been way more and they still would have been gone!) read more

Came down here to kill devil hills, NC for spring break and decided to stop here for donuts and I gotta say these donuts are the best I've had in a while. Lot of delicious donut options, ice coffee was good, the service was quick, and the shirt I got here looks great. What is so great about this place? One type of donut covered in goopy toppings. I haven't been for years, so I tried it again in KDH and I ended up with 3 donuts that tasted like they had been warmed up in a microwave and the toppings were a melted mess . I watched my gal make the donuts (all bases first, then all toppings, then all drizzles) and was impressed at her speed and memorization. The only part about Duck Donuts that I don't like is that it's 1500 miles from my house. We went twice in a week - once and ordered in the store (tip: go off peak to avoid long lines); the other online for pick up. The donuts are cake-y and delicious and made fresh - served warm. You can make about any combo of icing flavors, toppings and drizzles you can imagine. They have some cute swag, but it's priced as souvenirs. ($$$) read more

Duck Donuts is the closest thing to Fractured Prune. They definitely have their own name and reputation, but nothing beats the original. They're gonna be packed any day, so I recommend pre-ordering online! My family bought two dozen of their Summer Sets and it was ready perfectly on time. Not all that great of an experience. While placing my order the order taker seemed like it my have been her first day. I'm not going to recreate that day with the play by play action. When a person asks for a sausage egg cheese to be made on a maple glaze bacon doughnut the clerk really does not need to ask if I want bacon on it. I got the receipt with the order number on it and waited. From one counter someone called out a coffee drink. Was that mine? Yes it was. Didn't call out a number. Asked about the food and was told to wait for the order number to be called. Waiting area number 2 our number was called. A box of donuts was presented to me. I asked about the sausage egg and cheese sandwich and the shoulders of the associate shrugged. Another said it's coming from the back. I got dizzy jus being there. There were no utensils to eat with. Napkins had to be begged for. No indoor seating. In conclusion I found the place not very inviting to want to return. read more

The fact that I dream about and think about Duck Donuts should be embarrassing. They are that good! Every single flavor and topping has been KILLER! The Blueberry with streusel, Coffee Cake, French Toast and Cinnamon Bun are all my favorites. The best tip is to order online and get there at the exact time they say to pick up. Bottom Line: Fresh cake donuts dressed up with the toppings you specify. I use to be indifferent to Duck Donuts but the last several years I converted to being a big fan. What I like about Duck Donuts is that they are always fresh. For anyone not familiar with the concept of customizable Duck Donuts it goes something like this: 1. Vanilla cake dough is dropped in the friar after you place your order. 2. The donut is formed, travels down the conveyor belt, drains and then is ready for the coating of your choice. 3. Next the topping of your choice is added. 4. Finally, the donut is drizzled as you prescribe. I tend to keep it really classic with chocolate coating, rainbow sprinkles and then a hot fudge drizzle. My husband is all about the sweet and salty so he goes for a maple coating with bacon bits. On our most recent visit we both branched out and tried season flavors which included a pumpkin glaze. It is nice that you can get a single donut or several dozen. Duck Donuts also has coffee, tea, bottled drinks and merchandise, of course. read more

OBX is all about the Duck! I like these delicious donuts because they're fluffy and a mix between the yeasty ones at KK and the cakey ones at the "other DD"! With all the different combos and flavors choices, I still like the good ole "bare" naked ladies! A cup of coffee or tea and a donut? What can be better! Two days in a row and I was disappointed. The place closes at 2pm which is crazy to me. We went at 1:25pm and tried to get espresso but they said they shut the machine down because they close at 2. Soooo, shouldn't you turn the machine off at 2pm and not 1:30? We ended up at Starbucks. Tried this location again today for the second time and went at 11am thinking we should be good but when we wanted whipped cream on our drinks, they told us they had run out. At 11am?! If you're going for donuts and you have kids and you want to have fun, cool. But just be ready to wait in long lines and have staffers run around crazy. This location isn't really a good one if you ask me. Other location are better. read more

I personally am not much of a donut fan (unless it's Krispy Kreme's jelly filled) but this place WOWED ME! I didn't really know what to expect making my own donut, but it is not only a great experience but also great tasting! The batter of these donuts is all the same, and once its topped off, it almost tastes like a cake more than a donut. It's so neat to see the donuts made right there on the belt! There are so many combinations you can make from these donuts, and if you aren't feeling so crazy, you can just get one of the OBX classics! The one thing that did disappoint was the iced coffee section, I love that they had syrups to add, but unfortunately the only selection for cream is Half and Half (and I usually use almond milk) Don't let that deter you, these donuts are great :) read more

We came in a little early and they had a short line outside. They are limiting capacity so you only go in to order and they bring it out to you when it's done. It's really nice that they do that as part their COVID-19 safety measures. Our orders came out in about 15 minutes. The donuts were so warm and fresh. Tasted so good! For your convenience they have papers that you fill out to order with suggestions of the most popular dozen of donuts, or you can create your own box from their favorite flavor. You can also create your own flavor by choosing a filling, sprinkle, base coating so you can make it to your liking. While you order they are making them fresh so they come out nice and hot! Donuts were AMAZING!!!!!!!! Lots of variety. If you're going in the summer with lots of people, try the summer sensation dozen. If not, try the normal dozen. Some crazy donuts include Maple Bacon donuts and s'more donuts! To sum it up, Duck Donuts has everything! If you're staying in the Outer Banks, you should definitely go out of your way and treat yourself to a DUCK DONUT!! P.S. There's a store in Avon. That facility has only been open a month, but they taste as good as ever! You can show them some love by giving them a good review, or even buy a t-shirt! read more

Wow these donuts were delicious. I wasn't going to eat a donut and just decided to sample 1/4 of one. I had this coffee tasting one and it was utterly delicious. Had to go back and eat another 1/4 haha (having already had a big breakfast). It wasn't as dense as I thought it was going to be; if anything lighter than most donuts with great taste. If you haven't had duck donuts I would recommend stopping by if you're in the area. read more

It can transform an ordinary drink into something special. It makes the magic of coffee last throughout the entire day. I was immediately welcomed when I walked into the Outer Bean. Initially, I was bummed because cortados were not on the menu. I asked the barista if she would try to make one. She said sure. I gave her general directions and she walked to the espresso machine. A couple of minutes later she handed me a cup with two shots of espresso and a stainless steel pitcher with steamed milk. The barista said, "Why don't you add the milk in so you get it just the way you want." I thought this was a thoughtful gesture. I thanked her and made my cortado. We chatted a bit. It turned out she is Thai and my husband is Thai; and I love to talk about Thailand. I took a few pictures. We exchanged goodbyes and I exited the cafe with a genuine smile and a very positive impression of the Outer Bean. Smiles are free and they can elevate and/or improve any situation. Plus, folks always look better when they smile. I hope you make this world a better place by sharing your smile with someone today. Our visit today was our 8th visit to Duck Donuts, most of which were at the Kill Devil Hills location. This was a birthday visit for our 10 year old who loves Duck Donuts. Not the best visit from our perspective. The staff were stressed, rude and very unhelpful. I'm attributing this to the heat, the summer rush and the Covid-19 social distancing restrictions Duck Donuts have enacted. Only allowing 8 people in the store at a time meant a line of 20 people out on the sidewalk in the broiling 96 degree summer sun. No advance menus were handed out, so we were left feeling very rushed when we finally got in the store. It was very difficult trying to read the menu for coffee and donuts when the information was in 3 different places - 1 on the large board for coffee (we still have no idea what cold coffee options were available), 1 for the specials and another for the donuts. The young lady behind the order counter was non-verbal at best, very unhelpful! We just ended up getting a mixed dozen, and didn't order any build-your-own donuts due to feeling discouraged by the unhelpful order-taker. The woman running the door rudely asked our 2 kids to step out unattended while my wife and I fixed our coffees. She allowed a party of 8 (2 adults and 5 kids) in the store while other customers were in there thereby violating the 8 customer rule while we waited in line. The donuts were also put together in what appears to be a haphazard way as they're light on toppings. Suggestions for improvement - Provide shelter for those waiting outside, or at least provide water. Pass out advance order slips so they can fill them out and pass them up, thereby avoiding the interior of the store all together. Discontinue the unsanitary make-your-own coffee bar as that takes time and results in fewer customers in the store over time. Recruit and train staff with customer service in mind. read more

Sometimes you come across the perfect specimen of a food group. That happened to us last week when we got the privilege of having Duck donuts for breakfast. These are cake donuts, but not. I hate cake donuts. I'm actually not a huge fan of donuts at all, but hey, this was vacation! This is how it works. You go into the store and basically they make your donuts fresh, to order. You choose an icing (maybe 8 options?) and a topping (6 options maybe?). If you are ordering several you can fill out a form. Then you wait, maybe 3 minutes, 5-10 if they're swamped. They call out your number and your donuts are handed to you, HOT, in a box. I highly recommend the maple with bacon, the lemon with coconut, and the peanut butter with chocolate. I can not say enough about how good these are! This "non-donut lover" went there 2x in four days! read more

We're from the North East, where Dunkin Donuts reigns, but this place tops them all. Warm, made-to-order donuts are hard to beat. Line was out the door early this morning, so get there early. Both were excellent. This biscuit was very moist and flavors were on point. Not overly sweet. Hubby loved his pecan sticky bun. As a bonus, we had a great cup of coffee along with our breakfast treats. If you aren't into something sweet for breakfast, they also have savory options! A must try while in OBX.
