Went here for brunch and here's the scoop. This location is very quaint and cozy. If you're for brunch prepare for a bit of a wait (waited about 20-30 mins for a table) but there was available seating at the bar. The Hen House Breakfast was very tasty and filling. Not only did it include chicken and pancakes but came with eggs your way and a hash brown. The chicken biscuit was delicious, a pillowy biscuit with a tasty chicken middle. This location doesn't do bottomless drink. Opt for the strawberry mimosa that was good and a French 75 that was crafted with love. read more

I have heard a lot about Stowaway and wanted to come here and see for myself what the fuss is about. I also heard of their $1 happy hour oysters, which is always a draw for me, so dining here was a natural choice. The establishment looks pretty unassuming from the outside, but as soon as you walk in, you are transported in time to a cozy, vintage themed café with a small bar and a few tastefully scattered tables. I glanced over the raw oysters on another table and was very unimpressed by their miniature size. Also, unlike what their website states, the happy hour oysters are actually $1.50 each, which I found slightly annoying and maybe they should work on updating their website. Instead of going the raw route, I ordered the charbroiled oysters off the happy hour menu to start. I also heard their hush puppies are really famous and so I wanted to give them a try as well. For my main entrée, I saw another patron with a chicken sandwich and I ordered it. The hush puppies were really good, slightly on the sweet side with a fluffy corn batter, crunchy exterior. The dipping sauce that came on the side was actually a molasses butter, which was to die for. I do think that the hush puppies were a little bit on the greasier side, I could see that the insides had soaked in some oil which is never good for a fried item. They should probably work on frying these at a better temperature to keep the dish light and not as greasy. The chicken sandwich I was expecting from the looks of it for the chicken fillet to be meatier and thicker, but, when I bit into it, it was a lot more breading than I thought it would be with very little chicken. The side of pickles that came with the sandwich were absolutely delicious and really held a sandwich together because all that grease really needed a solid pickle to cut through it and these pickles did exactly that. I would love if they served even more of those on the side with the sandwich. The salad that came on the side of my sandwich was bright, well seasoned and delicious and not drowning and olive oil, which I appreciated. The charbroiled oysters were honestly a disappointment. This is a dish that probably would've worked well if they were using larger size oysters, but the topping to oyster ratio was just really off. The whole thing was extremely salty and the sauces on the oysters completely overpowered the oyster flavor. These were served with sourdough bread, which was a nice touch because the bread carries the sauce from the oysters very well. The oysters themselves had a lot of grease and then the toasted bread was also very greasy. I think that's one thing that I really did not like about this place is that their food was EXTREMELY GREASY. Normally food with fried components is not supposed to be this heavy but having this meal actually made me feel ill afterwards, and I only ate half of everything and had mad leftovers. I hope that they can improve on certain things based on my feedback. Service was friendly, it's a small space and it's not too hard to get a server's attention. I think their menu has so much potential. If they could just make a few need changes to elevate the quality of their food, this would be easily a five star establishment. read more

Stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday ordered food to go. Had an Americano while I waited and it was fantastic. The barista was very pleasant. Ordered the Low Country Shrimp gravy biscuit with a hashbrown and an order of Fried Okra. What I received: A biscuit dotted with 2 small steamed shrimp and a container of gravy. I thought perhaps there would have been more shrimp in the gravy, but there was not. Nice biscuit, gravy could have been seasoned better and did not receive the hashbrown. Instead of Fried Okra, I received Hushpuppies. I will give them another shot. I enjoyed the vibe of the southern bistro and felt very comfortable. The wait was about 20 mins. read more

Small venue providing big brunch ! They don't take reservations and I got there early on Mother's Day and was told it was a 45 min wait . I realized it's because the place is really very small and all tables were occupied as well as the bar. Once seated we ordered everything that fed our eyes during our wait. I had a good breakfast here after my doctor's appointment. It is southern themed by the way. I treated myself to a watermelon spritz. It has a small dining room that provided an at home experience. I came here with a friend and tried their chicken steak biscuit and fried chicken biscuit. Both were solid choices. The fried chicken was perfectly crunchy and nicely seasoned, while the biscuit was thick yet fluffy. The chicken steak biscuit had a rich mushroom gravy, while the fried chicken biscuit had a simpler pairing of a tangy aioli and house made pickles. Not sure if it was different or not, but the chicken tasted practically identical between the two. I enjoyed the fried chicken biscuit a bit more, as the pickles went perfectly with the biscuit and meat. Still, it's quite a simple meal. The hash brown was a nice add on, but nothing special. Came here for happy hour. Sunday early evening is quiet and chill here which is nice. Saw some reviews complaining about the interior - I actually didn't mind it at all. It's small but it's not crammed with tables, and there's great natural light. The oysters are $1.50 each, not $1 like the online menu says. The charbroiled ones (6 for $16) are delicious, loved both the bourbon adobo and garlic parmesan and would get more of those next time. Popcorn shrimp and mac n cheese were great adds. Service was on the slower side with only one person out front. We were served one oyster short and had to flag kitchen twice to get the one extra. Came here for brunch and I'll say I have some positives and negatives. First off the decor is very aged not particularly my vibe but have at it. The day I went the weather was in the high 80's and I was surprised that they had no AC or even a fan to cool down the restaurant (it was very hot in there). Also I want to point out that the restroom was very dirty, a little more bathroom attention can go a long way. Now to the food. Couldn't resist the temptation, but on the real, if you ever find yourself needing to break fast and enjoy a little hole in the wall, a rustic ambiance, and very friendly service, Stowaway serves. Tucked away in Greenpoint, Stowaway came up on a top ten list of places to check out and TikTok hasn't let me down before. If you're lucky to get either Miles or Sasha, you'll be in good hands. Of course the food served; started off spitting a blueberry pancake (pizza style); perfect size for three. The cake was made fluffy and the blueberry compote had that right amount of warmth and gooey. We each got one of the biscuit sandwiches and they were definitely a several steps up from any that you would get from Fastfood. A soft biscuit, perfect scrambled/runny eggs and a good southern sausage. I took a step further adding a side of remoulade at Mile's recommendation; choice. Also, stacking my hash brown on my sandwich, . Note, they don't do reservation but we got there round 11-12pm and they was seating for the three of us, but don't dally. Anyway, I'll have to comeback and try some of their specials of day. The shrimp and grits across another table looked pretty good. I've been here twice in 2 weeks and have had pretty good experiences. The first was for a dinner (2 ppl) and we were seated relatively fast. It was about 7pm so it was prime dinner hours. The service was fast and efficient. The shrimp was yummy but both fish and bbq sandwich were pretty dry. Also not sure if it was intentional but their pickles weren't fully pickled. Interesting choice. For brunch, we started with watermelon mimosas (DELICIOUS) and a jelly biscuit (meh). We both had the Hen House breakfast platter which was SO MUCH FOOD! The 4 star yelp rating is quite accurate. A plethora of factors are going into this one. But overall, a positive experience. The interior is small, but not in an intimate way. I am from St. Louis so I guess I am adjusting to the slightly "cramped" feeling of these NY hideouts. The interior definitely fit the stowaway vibes. You almost feel shipwrecked inside, and even the workers had a vibe, too. They just felt like they should be working there. That is intended to be a compliment. Very blue collar, beachy while still being super well put together. In any case, I did go about 12:30 on a Saturday so they were busy. The place only holds about 30 patrons. You could tell everyone was enjoying themselves, but just a but uneasy about the wait times which I did hear all servers apologize for. I noticed a lot of reviews mention the slow kitchen. It did however take a lot of time to get my order placed. I had to ask for a server to put in my order. And, once I put it in, nobody ever came back until I received my food. They gave me water when I arrived and that was about it. In any case, the food was worth the wait. The chicken fried steak was incredible. Being from small town Missouri, chicken fried steak is something I know a thing or 2 about. The mushroom gravy was superb. Hints of garlic with a nice saltiness and topped off with the rich, umami flavor from the mushrooms. The breading on the steak was crispy, and not too heavy. And, as all chicken fried steak should be: the steak was a little chewy, but not tough and not grisly. Of course, the biscuit was superb. It had a little extra flavor I cannot quite identify other than it definitely tasted southern/creole. Man, my first meal of my New York trip was pretty epic. I was eyeing this spot for almost a year now, whenever I walked by and looked at the menu I thought damn this is going to be amazing. To my dismay, I did not think the brunch menu was special at all. I ordered the bacon egg and cheese biscuit and thought for the biscuit size it was skimping on the eggs. It was also quite dry. My friend got the Shoreline Breakfast which was okay, but the pancake was sorely disappointing. I found it to be difficult to cut and extremely chewy. Not crispy or fluffy or anything that makes a pancake great. The whipped butter on top had no flavor either unfortunately. The people here seem nice and it does have a nice ambiance, but I would not recommend it to a friend. The cold brew was also really bad, so we were not off to a great start either. read more

Such a cool little spot! We were in town for a few days and decided to have breakfast here on a late Wednesday morning. I ordered a latte, which was perfect! I even ordered one to go before we left. This honestly is an ideal spot to come hungover in sweats to eat a carb filled breakfast. I actually split the Hog House breakfast with someone (we got an extra side order of eggs and hash brown). The pancake is HUGE - could easily feed three people and the bacon portion size is very generous. The hash browns are just like McDonald's (yum). Long story short, this placed served us disgusting food after over an hour wait that contained multiple hairs. Added with the crazy wait times to get service, I am absolutely staying away from Stowaway forever. I suggest you reconsider trying this spot. 3 of us came in on a Sunday, and were sat fairly quick but soon after that it all went down. First of all, the wait time for the food was unbelievably long. For some eggs, sausage and pancakes, we waited OVER AN HOUR. When the food did arrive, it arrived all sporadically instead of all together. Our eggs, probably the fastest thing to cook, somehow took about ~40 mins after getting our pancakes to get them. When the eggs arrived, they were extremely salty and inedible. The worst part besides the waiting was the hair. We found TWO different hairs in two of our dishes, one in the syrup cup for our pancake, and another one under the gravy of our biscuit (pictured below). I was absolutely disgusted. I had to stop myself from gagging at the fact I had just eaten something with hair in it. I feel so gross thinking that I could have eaten some without even noticing. Our server was really understanding, which was probably the only redeeming quality of the restaurant. Overall terrible standards of food, sanitation and quality. Never coming again. read more

Great chill spot for a little weekday breakfast. Good food good drinks, and adorable interior. Love being able to just walk in somewhere without a res for a little Friday brunch - not overly crowded and not dead so pretty much perfect. Great spot. The fries are as closest thing to bojangles' within hundreds of miles and that's a great thing. The pancake is amazing as is the fried chicken. Oysters are fresh and wonderful and they have a consistent happy hour. Soundtrack is also usually on point and carries the southern theme in the best way possible. I've heard Robert Lester Folsom not once but twice here. Oh yeah and the biscuits are some of the best you will find. The servers are very attentive and helpful. read more

Wish i could give zero stars! HORRRRIBLE place and service! Ordered online from this place twice and they sent me the wrong order BOTH TIMES. They replaced my hashbrown with salad and removed the blueberry compote and sent me these dry disgusting pancakes. When I called to let them know, a man named Josh answered the phone and he was extremely rude! He was very dismissive and said "Just ask for a refund through grub hub". He never even just apologized for the error. I tired to explain to him why I couldn't and he did not care. My husband called and he was also rude to him and dismissive. Stowaway more like blown away! This place was such a special hidden gem. My friend and I came in yesterday and split one of the platters- 2 eggs, bacon, hash browns + house pancake. It was delicious and highly recommend splitting since the pancake is HUGE. Very good if you want savory + sweet options in one meal. Priced well and great service. Will definitely be back! read more

Stowaway is such a cute little spot. Adorably decorated-has a cute counter w/ chandeliers hanging over it. Has a few tables as well. What it doesn't have, is great air conditioning. In fact, barely had any and we went on one of the hottest days of the summer. I'm not one to get up and leave somewhere because it's uncomfortable so we stayed but did notice that when I went into the G train station at Manhattan Ave it was cooler than Stowaway. So, we both ordered the BEC on a biscuit and cold brew. The cold brew was kind of a lukewarm brew due to the ice melting so fast. I like the BEC but the biscuit was incredibly crumbly. I'm not all familiar w/biscuits. Is that how they are? Or was it dry ? Are they supposed to be dry? It was tasty though. The hash brown was amazeballs. And service was excellent. read more

I'd rate Stowaway four and a half stars. Southeastern restaurant and bar. Full bar with four drafts and a short but varied wine list. Good variety of beers with all being local craft options. They seat about two dozen here. Seemed like a neighborhoody bar and a lot of people seemed to be friends with the bartender. In my opinion, they were understaffed as the bartender ran the whole front of the house. He was also the host, the waiter, the buser, and the runner. He even managed to keep up conversations with several clients. He was attentive too. Absolutely am MVP. Food was great. We shared the hush puppies and the fried olives to start. Fried olives were a special for the evening. I don't remember the last time I had those, so I felt to get them. Hush puppies came with what I'd describe as a sweet, syrupy, butter sauce. Olives came with a lighter creamy sauce that I liked a lot. For the main source, I had the fried catfish. I believe it was on a brioche bun that was great. Good portion of fish that was fried nicely. Very crispy yet still juicy. Came with slaw and pickles that complimented the sandwich well. Side of Cajun fries which were thick and filling. Such a gem in Greenpoint! Was in the area for some bloodwork and a recommend place came up down the block. While it is intimate, we were sat quickly, and the servers were very kind to offer a table to us twice though we opted for the bar. Loved the nautical-esq theme without it feeling like it's trying too hard. Sadly couldn't try the cocktails, but the lattes were extremely good. The breakfast platters looked SO good but was afraid my eyes were bigger than my stomach, so I went with the mushroom gravy over biscuits with a side of chorizo. The buildouts were fluffy and delicious, the mushroom gravy was stellar and hearty and the chorizo really tied the dish together. My companion got the same but with the fried chicken and WOW. We came on a Saturday at around noon and got seated at 1:30pm. They make this food FRESH. The quality of the food is great, but be prepared to wait. The restaurant is small and seats only around 25 people. Our food took like an hour to come out and our waiters were apologetic but were kind of just like: it'll come out when it's ready. I'd recommend coming on a weekday and getting the pancake and the chicken thigh! The biscuit is a bit dry but delicious. The clam chowder was outstanding but a brunch special.
