I knew I wanted to stay in the Trafalger Square area for part of my stay in London. That's how I came to book four nights at the Strand Palace Hotel. Yes, it's massively big and yes, it's located in a crowded, busy area, but don't let that scare you away. Choosing the Strand Palace Hotel was a great choice.
The hotel prides itself on customer service. It's one thing to say so, but another thing to execute it. The Strand Palace is true to their word, providing excellent customer service, and it started almost immediately. At check-in I was asked if I'd like a street view or not. I preferred something quieter on a higher floor. My seventh floor room toward the back was perfect. I was surprised at how quiet it was. The only noise I heard, ever, were a few doors closing.
When I arrived, my room was blazing hot. I wasn't certain how the encased radiator heat worked so picked up the phone to call the front desk. Oops, no dial town. As I made my way to the elevator, I came across Carmen, a housekeeping supervisor, and explained the situation. She immediately took me back to my room, explained the controls and called in my phone issue. It was fixed by the time I returned. Another day, I was carrying a laundry bag to drop off at the concierge desk. A porter saw me before I even made it to the elevator, gave me my paperwork and took care of it.
One evening I spied a TripAdvisor commendation hanging with other laudatory certificates in a nook off the lobby. I walked over to take a look and found someone working on their laptop. It was Manish Raware, Guest Relations Manager, and after introducing himself we had a nice chat about my stay. He even gave me his business card and told me to call him direct if I returned for another stay.
Perhaps the best service came from the concierge desk. The gentlemen I dealt with, including Raymond, were awesome. I wanted a last minute theatre ticket and they called three different places to find one that satisfied my requirements. They also gave directions and maps to anywhere I wanted to go and let me know about tickets to attractions they could sell for less than the price at the venue. I saved a couple of pounds each on tickets for the Tower of London and my Heathrow Express return, and I didn't have to wait in line at the Tower. They even had a luggage scale I used before leaving for the airport. I could rest easy knowing I squeaked under the 50 pound weight limit by just a pound.
From the welcoming doormen, to the bellmen, to the front desk staff, housekeeping, maintenance, the concierge, even management, literally from top to bottom, everyone is accommodating and focused on providing guests with a stellar experience. They get it right.
The room itself was fine for me, a single traveler. Like most rooms in London it's on the smaller side but proved more than adequate. The only trouble I had was finding a place for my large suitcase. There was no luggage rack and really no space to put one in the room. I settled for putting my suitcase on the floor at the foot of the bed. The bed was comfortable as were the four pillows and there was a built-in reading light on each side, a nice touch. Another thing I liked were the interior window shutters that blocked all light when they were closed. There is also a safe in the closet, but it's on an upper shelf and difficult to see inside. Be ready to stand on a chair if you're not tall enough. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the bathroom, including a large shower. It didn't feel cramped and was bigger than ones at similar hotels in large cities. There's also plentiful space to hold toiletries on a ledge above the sink.
A traditional English breakfast is available and if you purchase ahead of time it's almost GBP9 cheaper than if you wait until arriving in the dining room. I bought breakfast my first morning. And while there were lots of choices on the buffet, it really didn't stand out to me. That's not surprising given the mass quantities of food they prepare. With so many guests, there's a constant stream of customers being shuttled to tables. As soon as one table was vacant, waitresses swooped in to clear it and set it for the next guest, who arrived almost immediately. With the crowd and the noise it felt like I was eating in a high school cafeteria. A reasonably priced breakfast is available at any number of places close by, but you lose the convenience of eating in the hotel.
Another great plus is the hotel's location, close to Trafalgar Square, the theatre district and so many other attractions. You really can't find a more convenient hotel in London.
Great service from top to bottom and a great location are reason enough to book the Strand Palace Hotel. You will not be disappointed. read more
