I had a very disappointing experience with the security staff at this establishment. In my opinion, there seems to be a lack of professionalism when personal relationships with regular customers are involved. One security guard in particular allowed personal emotions to affect how situations were handled, which made the environment feel uncomfortable and poorly managed. Security should provide leadership, fairness, and a safe atmosphere for all paying customers. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. Because of this, I will not be returning or spending money here again, and I would not recommend this establishment to others. read more

Wings are big, juicy, and well cooked. We were surprised the jerk wings were dry rub, but heard they're great with the spicy garlic. I wasn't a big fan of the spicy garlic , but the buffalo were solid and the jerk was really good. The place was busy but didn't have a waitress or waiter for the tables. They also didn't give us plates or napkins until we asked. One of the bartenders did leave the bar to check in on us a few times which was nice. Also weird that they kept my credit card instead of returning after we opened a tab. Would do take out in the future or sit by the bar for better service. read more

At least Yelp! listed this place in the proper category - Dive Bars w/Food! Seriously ... we're not snobs or elitists. But I can't recall ever being in a bar/tavern/pub where the bartender won't make you a a) Vodka Martini b) Cosmopolitan c) Old Fashioned, or d) Manhattan Cocktail. Upon cross examination, our sarcastic servette told us that this enormous bar, located smack in the middle of a suburban transportation hub, and featuring 20+ oversized TVs, does not stock ... a pedestrian bottle of Dry Vermouth. And, that the sole brand of so-called premium Bourbon they stocked behind the huge, circular bar ... is Jim Beam! Alternatively, we opted to order my wife vodka with a splash of cranberry juice, which arrived in a tiny rocks glass, barely half full, for $10 bucks! After finally managing to explain to our server what an IPA was (no kidding), she delivered something called a "Hackensack IPA," in a plastic cup, naturally. We also managed to order a Chicken Quesadilla, which was served without guacamole; and was edible, although it tasted a little "off," to me. Final note: One of the servers, who shall remain nameless, referred to that night's two female bartenders as "assholes," mostly because they were mostly uncooperative in preparing or serving any mixed drinks that required any special knowledge, or effort! Come on, we are in Bergen County where you can't even get a decent piece of steak for unde $40. With not much expectation, ordered the crab legs platter with mussels, potatoes and corn for $18.99. Wow, portions are super generous and crab legs were fresh & tasty. Bartenders & workers are friendly and we met some random patrons who became first name basis by the time we were leaving the bar. Worst service (if you could even consider it service) I have ever experienced. We waited for 10 minutes, literally sitting in front of the bartender, without any acknowledgement of our existence. Place has a juke box and the use of it is popular. You'd be lucky to have your songs played but usually good music is played anyway. Bartenders are for the most part friendly. It looks a little shady at night but everyone was well behaved plus they have a bouncer for just in case. Drinks are incredibly inexpensive which I believe why it's so popular not including the food which looks delicious but never tried it so can't comment on it but based on looks I'd say yummy looking. It's a dive bar that sells food and inexpensive drinks. If you like that come here. If you're reading this hit the like button hope this helped. This is disappointing, because I've been a big fan for years, had previously given them a 5-star review, and had listed this among my 70 favorite bars (consisting mostly of dive bars) in the general area. Guess that list is down to 69 now. Here's the thing. They still have very good wings and even better burgers. They still have decent drink selection. But I come here because I'm a big fan of that classic dive bar look and vibe. I came here once with a friend and the bartender was giving us an attitude for no particular reason. I understand if someone is having a bad day, but we did nothing to her. Heck, I went to work the day after my mother's funeral and didn't give anyone an attitude. Yesterday I had two friends with me, one visiting from another country who happens to love burgers, so The Strap seemed like a great burger & beer combo choice. To be honest, the only better tasting burger I know in the area is Steve's Burgers on 46 in Garfield, but Steve's isn't a bar (plus Steve's burgers aren't nearly as big, and they're inconveniently cash-only, so The Strap made perfect sense. Well, we showed up and the bouncer immediately told us that there's only outside seating left. We said not a problem. He then said that we all had to show our IDs. We explained to him that two of us have our IDs, but one of us is visiting from another country and didn't think to take along passport for this, and we are all in our mid-40s and clearly couldn't fake being under 21 even if we had the help of a top Hollywood makeup artist. So a bouncer with an attitude informed us that we were not even permitted to sit at outside seating, three people in our mid-forties two of whom did have their ID's, because the third one of us visiting from another country didn't bring a passport? What did we do? We went to another bar where it was clearly no issue. And what are we going to do next time we want to go in a beer? We will be going to another bar, where it is clearly no issue. That was strike 2 for The Strap, but enough to make it strike 3. The competition is too steep to put up with such nonsense. There are better options than this, folks. I'll be throwing away my Straphanger t-shirt and not going back. My friend who also used to enjoy going here when in the area said the same. Done, not coming back. Check my stats, I don't leave a lot of negatives, but when I see reason to, I serve my community by letting them know why in my reviews. Still three stars because like I said, still good food and decor. But especially at prices that never stood out as quite the deal, why go back for the attitude when there are so many other great options? read more

Awesome dive bar! We actually found The Straphanger because Blackjacks was completely packed with eager trivia night contestants. With a quick yelp search, we ended up here! The first thing I noticed was the crowd. So diverse! It was nice to see. Everyone was so friendly too. Coraline, our bartender and server was fantastic. She's got that personality that will win anyone over. Drink prices are incredibly cheap here. Food is the same. We got quesadillas, chicken parm sliders with fries, and angry orchard and about 5 margaritas - which were the special of the night. Our bill was around 30 bucks. Ridiculously cheap! They've got a good late night menu. Lots of your good old greasy food plus some healthy salad options. Have to say, the chicken parm sliders were great. I would definitely get those again. They have seafood Sunday's from 2-9. I took a look at the menu and everything is super reasonably priced. Can't wait to try it out. The back room has some games to hang out and play. My brother introduced me to this place and since then I've been a handful of times. I've always had a good time whenever I've been here and I'll probably be back. They used to have shuffleboard but I was just there tonight and I don't think I saw it. If it's gone that's a shame because shuffleboard is pretty fun. They do have a basketball machine thing, darts, and a pool table; all of which are fun activities. Tuesdays are half price wing night and also karaoke night. They're a pretty generous serving of wings and there are a good variety of flavors. the wings are cooked well. Good deal. They also have $2 tacos. The tacos didn't blow my mind or anything but they were still solid, I'd get them again. Karaoke is free and you even get a free shot if you sing a song (only applies to the first song). Through it all the drinks are pouring and it's a recipe for a good time. It can be a little bit difficult to flag down a bartender and the bar is basically the only place to sit. So this place isn't quite the best idea if you're in a larger group. I'd definitely come back for a fun Tuesday night. read more

During Covid-19, I had to take some good food to go to celebrate father's day. So, I searched good seafood place on Yelp, and this pub came across. I hesitated like "a pub serve seafood? Hmmm.." but I gave it a try to find out. They only have the seafood on Sunday as special. I called them to find out, and a guy answered all of my questions, and he was super nice and helpful. Thus, I've ordered 3 snow crab platters to go. It was $20 and change per platter, and it worth every penny. The platter has 2 clutters of snow crap which is approximately 10 legs and some goodies such as steamed clam, sausages, potatoes, and corn. The portion is very generous, and all the ingredients are so fresh. I don't know how they have that kind if price for that. I absolutely love it!! They have some other Sunday seafood specials that are at reasonable price. I reviewed based on my take out experience, and I don't know how they do it in the pub. read more

The Straphanger is doing quite well during this COVID-19 era, and are taking all the necessary precautions to keep their customers safe, so I applaud them for that. The food? Delicious --- and on top of that, for a decent price, it's abundant. So why the four (4) stars? The menu --- for me --- is quite limited. I normally would never eat a cheesesteak, but because of a limited menu, I ordered it. I was satisfied with it and it was delicious, but cheesesteak just isn't my number one choice --- no matter how good it is. So because of a small menu, I can't give it a full five (5) stars. It was a Saturday Night, a few stragglers hanging outside because the place was packed inside, everybody all huddled around the entrance when there was space in the back. You'll find a dartboard, arcade machine and pool table in the back. Typical "around the way," run-down bar that may be known for serving up some good wings. The crowd that night, mixed (age wise, 20s-mid 60s). The old-heads, who arrived early enough to score seats at the bar and didn't plan on leaving til their asses grew roots, with the bladders of steel. The young-heads were students from the area colleges, local hackensack scrubs. Heads up to the Single Ladies: not really good pickings and the decent ones came with ladies in tow. I was introduced to this dive bar about a year ago by a well-known person in the community that's in law enforcement. As a consistent customer of this establishment that has personally gotten to know most of the staff and the owner, I can say this place deserves nothing short of 5 stars! I think having a business in the community comes with some additional responsibilities than making sure your food is served right and drinks are good. This establishment has supported many other businesses in the community, as well as held fundraisers, provide food for fundraisers, given monetary support for cancer victims, and Parkinson's disease, fed the homeless, and families suffering from tragic accidents such as fires, supporting children going back to school and the local police and fire department! All without wanting any recognition for it! He can be quoted saying "it's not about me, it's about the people". Thank you Straphangers for making my first year frequenting your business a great one. I always wanted to check this dive bar out, Glad I did. First, I will love to give a shoutout to Mimi our bartender. She was extremely nice and attentive, Mimi didn't hold back and gave us free shots right away lol I literally felt like I've been friends with Mimi for awhile, that's the attitude she brings to the table. I ordered steam clams and bar pie (Seafood Sundays), they were both delicious and fresh! My friends had wings, chicken quesadillas, and cheesesteak. I gave each of them a try and it was very good, especially the cheesesteak . I'll be going back actually today to catch the yankees game, I forgot to mention the ambience of the place, I was extremely happy to see they had a basketball arcade game in the back. The last time I was there, the lighting had been changed to what felt like office lights. It was much brighter due to the use of cool fluorescent bulbs, I guess. The "ambience" had changed. I could see everyone clearly from across the room and they could see me. I've eaten there a few times in the past and enjoyed my meal. This last time, I didn't stay. We had one drink and left. We I left and went somewhere where the room felt "warmer". You know what they say: "Lighting is Everything". Btw the bartenders (one male and one female) weren't friendly and inviting. Used to be a great bar until recently when they changed up some bartenders. I definitely felt the racism last night from a (young looking short female) bartender and for that I will never go back. She blatantly kept ignoring me then when I finally got her attention she made a poorly mixed drink which she did angrily. Obviously so I wouldn't like it! -very poor customer service.
