Her godfather took us to dinner at the downtown location shortly after we were married. My brother in law is a member. He has taken me there a few times to catch a shuttle to the Cardinals game and for after game drinks. But, I had never been to this location until now. My brother in law threw a very nice dinner party for my sister in law's 70th birthday. Coincidentally, the party was on my actual birthday, Veteran's Day. I kind of considered it my birthday party even though we were celebrating someone else. We started out in a nice room with a bar. They had a little table set up that had sugared bacon on a stick, cocktail shrimp, and toasted ravioli. I really enjoyed the bacon. It was nice and thick, and the piggy taste I like was not overtaken by the sweet glaze. The shrimp were huge and cooked to absolute perfection. The toasted ravioli were just "OK" in my book. Evidently, toasted ravioli is a St. Louis invention and very popular. I prefer mine boiled and covered in Mama's sauce. My brother in law had selected several wines for the party, but I don't like to drink wine in public other than a small glass or two with a meal. I prefer to drink beer because I know how to gauge what I am drinking and stick within my limit. Since it was an open bar, I went over and checked out the beers they had on draft. That is when I first encountered Karen Baldwin. She was so warm and friendly every time I ran into her in the club, that I made a point of asking her name. She helped me pick a beer that I really liked and stuck with the rest of the night. Eventually, a young fellow who seemed to be a manager, led us on a hike through the club to our private dining room. It was nicely decorated and very comfortable. I sat at a table of eight with my wife, her sister, her cousin and his wife, and two of my sister in law's close friends. The first thing they brought out to us was a salad. I liked the way they served all of the ladies at our table first. The salad looked really delicious and had what looked like a huge meatball in it. My wife had read her place card and saw that it was actually a personal-sized cheese ball. It was goat cheese covered with chopped nuts. I smashed it and made sure I had a bit of it on every bite of the salad. It was a salad I will always remember. They also gave us the most heavenly little rolls to go with it. The entree that my brother in law selected was filet mignon and HUGE scallops served with a risotto. I traded my filet for my wife's scallops, as she doesn't like any kind of seafood. Those scallops were the best I have ever eaten. When my sister in law asked if I wanted her last one, I shamelessly took it and scarfed it down. The risotto was not the best I have ever had, but it was good. I think my "scallop high" probably overshadowed it. After dinner, they moved us to an outdoor patio area. It was a little chilly for this Texan, and the gas heaters were evidently just for looks. You could actually touch the glass that covered them. I went in and sat at a table in the bar with my wife's cousin. Once again, Karen Baldwin appeared and took care of us. Although she stands out in my mind, everyone that served us was wonderful. All in all, I thought everything was really nice. It was all very classy, but to me, that has always been a description for St. Louis in general. It is a classy town!

Missouri Pickleball Club is an indoor pickleball facility located in Fenton, Missouri. They have 18…read morecourts available and also sell quite a bit of pickleball gear including paddles, bags, and accessories. They also allow you to demo paddles. There is a giant parking lot right outside of the facility and I have never had an issue finding a spot. I have been a member ($25/month) for about 2 months now and have taken advantage of their perks. For example, they offer a good amount of beginner and advanced clinics, paddle stack play, organized play, and league play throughout the week. You sign up for these events through an app (CourtReserve) and then scan your own personal bar code to check in. These events run almost all day and are open to non members but are cheaper if you have a membership. You also have the option to reserve a court but each person playing on the court is also charged too. They also host tournaments here that you can sign up for. So far I've done drill and play, organized play, paddle play, and have reserved a court at some point. It is nice have the organized play/paddle stack options and play with new folks when I don't have a group to play with. The courts are also pretty nice and the bathrooms are kept fairly clean. There is a wide range of DUPR levels (2.5-4+) which allows for a wide variety of people with different skill levels to participate. Some downsides are that the cost to play can add up considering the $25/month membership plus any additional event you want to sign up for which can range from $5-$30. Starting January 2024, they also charge a $50 account activation fee for new and returning members. This is fine but I think it would be helpful for them to be transparent about it as this is not listed on their website and was sent through a members only email. I do like MPC and am enjoying their events but will likely be returning to outdoor courts once the weather warms up.

After finally moving back to the Lou to raise a family we decided to rejoin the club to partake in the swimming and the tennis courts. The decor really hasn't changed much in several decades. The same wooden doors grace the entrance and the same smell and sound of indoor tennis permeates once you walk in. They dining room has been nicely expanded and looks very comfortable. There are about 9 rubberized indoor courts. The rubberized courts are fairly unique in St. Louis. They are much easier on the knees while chasing down tennis balls. They did install volleyball/basketball courts in the lower level along with a rehab and sports fitness center. The use of which is all included in a full club membership. Not too bad! Outdoor courts are incredible. There are about 15 courts in total but 6 of these are true "clay" courts. Also a hard find in St. Louis as they are harder to maintain. If you like French open tennis then check these clay courts out! No grass courts however. On the top lawn they have a small croquet pad as well. My kiddos love the swimming pool. Designed for both lap swim and leisure. They have a small kiddie pool just right for toddlers and plenty of covered tables and seating around the pool. Different days of the week they have food specials. Our favorite is the taco Tuesdays! Life guards always on duty.
