NEVER!!!!! Eric and Alex are both insane and awful to work with. They charged my card an extra $111 without telling me just because I didn't answer the phone at 10 am when we had a 1pm appointment scheduled. AND he called me 6 times 2 days before my appointment to try to reschedule me to an earlier time or date to make this easier on himself. This man was at my home to do a mobile service when I was upset he wrongfully charged me, he screamed at me and I had close my front door on him, he then began to scream at me through my front window. After that he decided to not do the service and stole $400 from me. He then continued to call and text me multiple times after stealing money, screaming at me and not doing the service he had charged me for. 0 stars!!!!! read more

Ever since the CD player in my Alpine deck crapped out and my iPod Classic went kaput, I've had to resort to listening to the radio. I don't know how I survived the "x" amount of months scanning through the local FM stations with a constant feed of Drake, Ja Rule, or perfectly timed commercial breaks all at once, but one good thing that came out of it was me discovering the local jazz station (KCSM) and having something pleasant to listen to. Even then, that wasn't exactly what I wanted to hear during my drive to the gym. ANY who. Fast-forward to getting my tax refund and deciding to finally upgrade my car receiver. I initially was going to take my business to another local car audio spot, but on that Saturday, parking was nearly impossible (the place was downtown OAK) and I said "Fuhgetta 'bout it!" after circling the block a few times. I figured I'd just go to the Best Buy nearby to look around, make a decision to buy, then be done. Problem was, I couldn't find anyone to help me so then again..."Fugetta 'bout it!". I decided to give Yelp another look and as I scrolled through, along came Street Sounds. It had great reviews, overall, plus it was decently close by and I really preferred to support a local business instead of going with a big box spot. The moment I walk up to the door, I'm greeted by Alex. He was super chill, listened to my situation and what I was looking for, then he made a suggestion that fit my budget and needs (Bluetooth audio/AUX/iPhone compatible/etc.). Being a Saturday afternoon, I was surprised how quiet it was in the showroom. I always remembered, as a child, going with my dad to car audio shops on the weekend when he wanted to add some thump to the family car and the places would be a circus! I checked out what else they had to offer there, but the Pioneer that Alex suggested was the best option. I figured I'd have to make an appointment to bring my car back for the installation, but then Alex says, "Shoot, I can get it taken care of for you today, man! Give me an hour and you'll be good to go.". Worked for me! He and his brother, Eric, immediately got to work on my installation and, approximately 30-40 minutes later, my deck was installed and ready to go. Alex gave me a rundown of all the features, let me take my time tinkering around with it to get comfortable and, right as I was ready to drive off, he stopped me to give me my old deck. How could I be so forgetful??? To conclude, my experience at Street Sounds could not have been smoother and quicker. Alex was able to come through with what I was looking for in a VERY timely manner, along with being hella welcoming and down-to-earth. I will absolutely recommend this place to anyone. Post on here to try and look good for customers all you like. You are a liar and a moron. Don't be fooled by the response below. I came to Street Smarts on the evening of Wednesday, September 4th. I wanted to get a center console unit display with Apple CarPlay installed in my 2006 Audi A4. They seemed a little aggressive at first, but nothing that was overly alarming. I left my car there, and an hour later (approximately 5:30pm is my best guess) was informed that they didn't have the proper installation kit. I was given the product number, and where to go get it. This was a little strange to me since, after all, it's their job. Regardless, I took it upon myself to go to Hi Tech Audio in El Cerrito, which was where they recommended I go. The part I was given incorrect, despite the employee being adamant that it would work. That issue was rectified by one of their fantastic employees the following day. Now, at the end of Wednesday evening, I came to an with the owners of this business (installing my center console), that it was getting late and that we would handle it in the morning. They told me I'd be contacted by 10:15. That never happened. Furthermore, they open at 11. I have photos with time stamps showing that they did not arrive until 11:40. Upon completion of installing the console, I politely explained to one of the two owners that I was uncomfortable with their lack of punctuality, and that I drove to and from El Cerrito twice to get the installation kit they didn't have. Two round trips took me about an hour and a half (Wednesday was during rush hour), and I purchased the unit. I simply indicated that I felt it would be fair for them to either partially refund me for their lack of communication (they had my cell phone number, and claimed to never have taken it with them last night). We had verbally agreed to speak about this at 10:15 the next morning. Again, they didn't open until 11:40. Both brothers got immediately defensive and said I was trying to take advantage of them. They then closed the garage, threatened to take the unit out, and cussed at me several times. I told them to let me go, as I was being held against my will. It took them at least 5 minutes to do so. They went as getting in my face, and possibly pushing me. I cannot remember for certain, but when each employee tried to enter my vehicle, I stood my ground and told them they didn't have permission to do so. I had already paid in full, and they consequently had no right to enter my vehicle without my permission. In no way was I trying to take advantage of them. I was asking for them to do what was right. You can't say you're doing your job when you're 40 minutes late, and have your customer go fetch and pay for a part you should have. I probably only used a gallon and a half retrieving the installation kit, but again, I went there twice, taking an hour and a half. Add the fact that they opened 40 minutes late, that totals to a little over 2 hours of my time that they could have avoided. You can't validate having a customer still pay full price. The only refund he gave me was for installation. $29 in cash. I have no way of knowing if that's a real fee, as I was not provided with a detailed receipt. The whole thing cost me well over $700. I was fine with that, but when you act as they did (not doing the job entirely on their own, being late, no communication, etc.), it's perfectly reasonable to indicate that you're uncomfortable with paying that much. As I mentioned, when Hi Tech in El Cerrito made a mistake with the wrong part, they were very apologetic and took care of me. I work in customer service, and I really appreciated the apology. It was sincere and the issue is now water under the bridge. These guys, however, are scary. They have a hot temper, and if you question them at all, they take it personally. They turned a business transaction into a criminal act because they didn't like my rationaIe for receiving a partial refund. I demanded nothing. I feared for my safety. I certainly don't want anyone else to endure this. So, the primary focus here is on being held against my will, being under intentional emotional distress, and consequently being falsely imprisoned. I could have been severely injured by these men, as their rage was unlike anything I've ever seen. Again, the transaction and their work was done. I have a bank statement showing a $760 charge from them on Wednesday, September 4th. Again, the most important issue here that I want to focus on is falsely imprisoning me. Secondarily, which is equally important, is the emotional duress they put me under. I felt in grave danger, and was told I could only be allowed out of the garage if I apologized. Great customer service. Great installation job. These guys took really good care of me. My car was having a mess of issues with my old aftermarket dash unit. The wires were a tangled mess from a previous installation. They had to put in hours of extra work to make it right and they didn't charge me extra. They did a really quality job and charged reasonable prices. In fact, they really went out of their way to help me save money. Eric and Alex did a very good job with my Mustang subwoofer installation. I stopped by the shop around 4pm and they helped me to select a pioneer sub and box which fits my trunk perfectly. Absolutely terrible attitude. I came in to look at selection of radios, and got a little bit of condescension but wrote it off. I said I'd think about it and come back the next day. So I came back the next day after doing some research. The guy was crazy condescending and rude. I pointed out some features I'd like- namely, Pandora over Bluetooth functionality built in. He kept insisting that 'that doesn't exist' and that I 'don't know what I'm taking about'. When I tried to show him the manufacturer's website *describing the very function I was asking for* he said 'lady, I've been doing this for 25 years, you can't tell me what's available'. i really wanted to like this shop. wanted to support the locally owned biz instead of going to best buy or something. i called ahead and he took all my info down. make and model of the car including the package (limited) i knew what I wanted (new sony head unit with carplay) he tried to upsell me a few times, not in a real pushy way but still. price seemed OK, cost of labor was a little higher than i expected but no big deal. come back a few hours later to pick up the car and the back up camera doesn't work anymore. He never mentioned to me that would stop working (but he did tell me the volume controls on the steering wheel wouldn't). i go in and ask him why it doesn't work and he looks at me like i'm crazy "you never told me you had a backup camera". i'm trying to stay calm but i'm like dude this is your job, the backup camera came with the car and you should have seen that. anyways, i'll let it go. but then he tries to tell me that i need to buy a new after market camera for 200$ and another 100 for labor. fuck that. you could maybe chalk up the backup camera bit to communication breakdown but now it seems like he's lying and up-selling me. not cool :( called best buy and the guy on the phone said there's an adapter to get the stock camera working again. and it'd be 120$ parts and labor. i wouldn't recommend this shop to anyone. read more

Let me be honest with you: I'm not an audiophile, I don't know anything about sound systems and basically can't tell the difference between a $100 stereo and a $1000 stereo. So if this is the kind of review you are looking for, mine will disappoint. But! If you are just someone who wants a stereo in your car for a good price and done quickly and correctly, we're on the same page. My car was recently stolen and through diligent detective work, I drove around until I found it myself and called the cops to come release it to me. The window was smashed and the stereo was stolen. I had an important airport dance party send off scheduled for the following day so when Best Buy gave me the run around on when they could install it I found this place instead. (Now that I think about it, I'm gonna write a bad review for Best Buy) I called and asked them what the cheapest stereo installed would set me back. The said $200 including tax and installation. When I showed up they installed it in my car and I was out of there in 30 minutes tops. Also, if you pay cash they give you a break on the price because they won't have to pay the credit card fee. My stereo is great, it plays music and loudly at that, what more could I ask for? read more

I said you already quoted me last time. So he continued looking in my car and said that the quote is now 260. The high to low was quoted 2 weeks ago 25 dollars and somehow it's now 29 dollars. These guys are great! I had them upgrade the audio in my two vehicles. The first was a simple stereo and speaker upgrade in my jeep. The installation was superb and sounds great. The second was a more custom upgrade in my mercedes wagon which included a custom subwoofer built into an existing panel in addition to the standard factory speaker upgrade/new desk. Ok let me start off by saying I am a huge audiophile and this is the 2nd car I've put a stereo in. My first car stereo instal was done at a $1 instal spot who sold me on some lower quality products that ended up giving out a couple years down the road. However, they did a flawless instal in just over 4 hours. Now, on to Erik and Alex over at Street Sounds. Their shop is tight, tons of quality product and they know everything in there inside and out. They will set you up with exactly what you want, no BS. The instal was a different story however, I brought my car in on a Saturday (do not bring your car to them on Saturday, they are very busy, go with a weekday). It took them all day, 8 hours. It's only the 2 of them there running the whole show. Side note, they smoke in their garage while they work on and in your car. If you don't mind that, fine, but I was totally not down. Nothing I could really do at that point. Anyway, they finished off the car, I went to pay with an Amex and they made me split the fee that they as a business were going to have to pay on that. They have it posted that they accept Amex. I get in my car and drive off with my new stereo. Get on the road, start rolling my windows down, and hear *clunk*. The windows were hitting the speakers. So I had to bring it in again and have them fix that, another trip to the east bay and 2 hours for them to work on it. Ok, thats it right? I take a roadtrip, giving the speakers a solid hour of continual play time (of course after 2 weeks keeping the volume at 50% so the speakers can break in) and start to hear a crackle like somethings blown. On top of that, there was a new rattle in my dash that wasnt there before the instal. So I go in again and leave it with them while I'm at work and they try and figure it out. After some tests, Alex says that he thinks its my music that has the crackle (this is a .wav file). I disagree but have just cut that frequency out of the speaker and have it in a different place. He also added some foam padding to try and fix the rattle, but it didnt fully take care of it. SO, after about 13 hour of work and 3 trips to the East Bay, I now have a system that I'm pretty happy with. Doesnt hit as hard as I was hoping but it's very crisp. If I had to do it again I think I would figure out EXACTLY what I want and go to a $1 instal place. read more

These guys were great. Bad on the phone but great in person. I was looking to upgrade my factory installed Toyota CD playing stereo that lacked iPhone compatibility. I was looking for the cheapest stereo that had either a USB hook up or just and aux jack. So, I went to Best Buy. Their car installation crew didn't have the proper car kit for my Toyota Matrix. They sent me the Street Sounds a few blocks away. I'm happy they did. One, they were attentive. Two, they were knowledgable (neither of which Best Buy is). Alex was great. He upsold me a little but explained that the model he sold me was going to be truly compatible and intergrated the controls directly onto the dashboard. I was able to supply them one from a different model hoping for the best. They had no problem making the system look absolutely stock. The installation was solid. I let them know that they could take as long as they needed to do the job right. Not only did they complete the work sooner than stated, but they spent the time to show me the radio's features and even connected my phone to bluetooth. Their out the door price was very reasonable for a quality shop, and the system package that they put together for me is superb. This is my second time going to Street Sounds. I was so happy with my first experience that I didn't think twice about giving Alex and Eric my business again. My first visit was to replace my $200 Craigslist-bought two-12s subwoofer that were obnoxiously loud and poor quality. Alex, who is an expert in sound quality, advised that for my car a clean 10" Pioneer sub would be perfect. And of course I have now had that subwoofer installed for almost 4 years and it was one of the best $500 I spent (don't be cheap people, you always pay for it in the end!) Fast forward 4 years, my driver-side speaker keeps going out after serving faithfully for almost 20 years (my car is a 1997). I decide it's time to get a full speaker overhaul to match my amazing Pioneer subwoofer. As with a lot of installs, things don't always go according to plan. My old BMW had a 3-way factory sound system and amplifier that threw a wrench into our original plans. After taking my speakers out, Alex told me that some modifications needed to be made and advised me of my options. I decided to spend a little more money and get it done right (once again, don't be cheap!) so we came up with a new game plan. By the end of the day, the car was ready. But once again there was an unforeseeable issue. This time there was an issue with the new amplifier amplifying the sound of the engine (yes, stuff happens...) Again Alex promised that we would get to the bottom of it and find a way to fix it. I was not worried at all because I can tell that Alex is a man of his word. After a couple weeks and a long search by Alex to find the rare part that would fix this very unique issue (this issue has never happened to them before, you learn something new everyday!), the sound in my car is perfect and I couldn't be happier with the result. Yes it took longer than I expected. Yes it cost more than I expected. Yes I had to invest some of my time to come back to the shop a few times. AND YES I WOULD DO IT ALL OVER! Don't do it. Spend your money elsewhere. Went in to get a new sound system installed and all I got was the run around. They refused to give me an estimate in writing of what exactly they were selling me and how much the labor would cost. The guy only told me that the labor would be $1,600.00. WOW! What a rip-off. Usually when shady businesses like these refuse to put anything in writing is because they are actually selling you refurbished low end products but telling you that you are getting the best. I left the shop and he called me back and then tried getting me to come back in for a price. These guys have all the tricks in the book. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY. (Also told a friend about my experience and he said that he had a similar one which is why I was so compelled to leave a negative review. I brought my Mazda in a couple of weeks ago to get my car stereo overhauled. Alex and Eric were *extremely* knowledgeable, so much so that I spent more time than I would have expected just chatting about the options available to me. What's more, the guys are VERY proud of the work they do, and exude a no bull-shit attitude when it comes to the perks and drawbacks of certain stereo/speaker choices. I knew I was in good hands. They drew up a few options that included a bangin' sub in the trunk, ranging (if I recall correctly): 1) Normal Bass for casual listening 2) Loud Bass for thumping enjoyment 3) Extreme, over the top Bass that you can hear from blocks away I went with option 2, and then decided to get the nicer model head unit after discussing the pros and cons of the options. I was very excited to have the install as I had a looming road trip a few days later. They called once the dash kit arrived and assured me that the install would be done before I left. And sure enough, they did. Now I absolutely love driving as my car sounds great. I'm just thrilled with it. My recommendation for anyone looking for an honest deal from passionate people, go there. This place is HORRIBLE!!!! Don't go there for ANYTHING!!! I went with my fiancée to get a car stereo removed and first they were late opening. Then once the guy got there since we had to leave and come back he starts acting VERY PARANOID like he has been robbed before. He then proceeds to be VERY RUDE saying we have to wait longer because the other guy is late. Ok here we go! As we are waiting another customer comes and he lets him in and locks the door. He won't let us come in to look at the products while we wait for an only 25min job! Now our car is pulled in the shop and the next thing they do is pull the gate down and then the other gate after that!! WTH???!!! We can't see what is going on with our car? What are you hiding? I felt like at that point we were being stereotyped because we are African Americans who work hard just like them! At that point my fiancée and I were done! We instantly told them to pull the car out so we can leave. We no longer wanted their business. As I'm trying to tell them we want to leave, one of the guys slightly tried to push me and I was LIVID!! He was very very lucky that day if you know what i mean! WTF...I just read a review of an African American man having a horrible experience here. I HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE! This guy double locked the gates and had me stand outside while he programmed my remote. I wanted to browse his inventory and look around while he worked on my car but it was quite clear he didn't want me in the storefront lounge area!! He quoted me $25 on the phone for the alarm programming...(took 10 minutes) but then he attempted to charge me $45 for the service, not knowing I had called prior for a quote. When I reminded him that I called that morning and he quoted me $25, he stammered and gulped and had the nerve to tell me that the discount is for appointments only but he'll give me the discounted price as a favor. Listen to me... I know people think Af/Am's are hyper sensitive about racial profiling but trust me, having went to school in the South, I know racism and Cali is as good as it gets for us. I am oblivious to it here but this guy is ridiculous. Who has their customers stand outside as he locks his gates separating you from your car and his business. He then tells me that he'll let me know when my car's done! I've given this plenty of thought and have come to the conclusion that what was clear was that he was there by himself and he was terrified at the idea of me being in his showroom (stocked with stereo gear) without him being able to hawk me to prevent theft. After a miserable experience at another car stereo place, my hopes were not very high for Street Sounds. I knew what I wanted but wasn't sure the exact system that would meet my needs. Once Aref (Eric) greeted me he immediately listened to what I wanted instead of doing any sales techniques to up-sell me. First, he showed me the different brands, then, agreeing that Pioneer would be the best choice for me, he showed me all the models from the bottom to the top of the line. Knowing what I needed (Aux and BT input), he said that the "top of the line" had features I really didn't need. With an agreed model he priced out parts and labor and the total was WAAAY less than expected. Not only that, but Aref did the installation himself AND he answered some curve ball questions I had, all with a friendly no pressure personality. In the end, I walked away with a replacement head unit (the stock unit was failing me) that I'm thoroughly enjoying (even my friends and family are impressed by the sound and call quality from the unit), but I also know where to go for any further car stereo needs. Honestly, anyone looking for car A/V equipment and/or installation should check these guys out. Alex and Aref are the real deal, hardworking brothers who know their stuff.
