I found this place through Course Horse and was really excited to try something completely new. Tango lessons?! Heck yeah. The intro class looked super low key - a little flavor into what the real thing would be like. Only 1 hour and super cheap ($15 on Course Horse, or free if you've got rewards/promotions) so I signed up right away with the bf. On the website, they offer this course for $10. The description promises that everyone will be able to dance Tango after the class, and I have to say, they did deliver. Nothing complex or anything but simple postures, movements, and one sequence. After one hour of instruction, I think that's pretty decent. The logistics were a bit messy though. The website had the wrong floor/room, and there were at least 30-40 people squeezed into one studio, and split into two different classes teaching different Tango moves. At first this was SUPER confusing and difficult to concentrate, but we got used to it after we started dancing. I'm bumping up to a 4 from 3.5 because the overall experience for what we paid is pretty great, and it's definitely a really fun thing to try, especially if it's your first time. They also offer classes in the summer for free at Central Park and Washington Square Park. Haven't tried them out myself but seems like a fun (cheap) thing to do on a date. Highly recommended, as long as you can get over the logistics piece. What have you got to lose?! read more

I have studied with several teachers and have found that this school has a most unique method of breaking down the intricacies of tango into a most easy to learn experience. The teachers all have to learn the specific Sergio Segura Method and be certified. There is a class for every level of tango, including stage, choreography and open role. A very easy location by subway, LIRR or driving...there is free parking a few blocks away from 6pm & a block away at 7pm. A very friendly down to earth group of people who will go to milongas together....I totally recommend Strictly Tango NYC! read more

My tango teachers here are terrific! they're patient in teaching particularly beginners. I didn't know any step on the argentine tango prior to starting my lessons here---in 3 months' time (more or less), I've gained enough confidence and the skills to be able to dance the argentine tango....i've kept coming back since then & I look forward to doing more lessons and practices. you can just show up for the practicas (usually saturdays PM) if you have to brush up on your skills---very helpful---I happened to have danced with those who know a thing or two about the tango, which has helped me a lot. other students i've met here are generally friendly and very helpful. the studio has moved recently to the Pearl Studios on 500 8th Avenue (between 35th & 36th Sts). yes, i agree, they're the best argentine tango school in NYC! read more

If you want to live a happier life, learn to dance. If looking sexy makes you happy, learn tango at Strictly Tango. Years ago, I started taking ballroom dance classes when I was going to school upstate. I enjoyed learning swing, foxtrot, waltz, and ballroom tango. When I graduated and moved back to the city, I took it upon myself to continue dancing. In the summer of 2014, I randomly decided to explore Argentine Tango, and Strictly Tango had a good deal for a $10 intro class as advertised on Google. I also read reviews about the quality of the teaching and I had to check it out for myself. Truth be told, the $10 intro class is enough for anyone to learn the basic steps. But what got me hooked was how different Argentine Tango was from ballroom-style tango. I saw my teachers run through the movements and it was so fluid yet structured. It was beautiful to watch and I became determined to dance as beautifully as they did. After all, if you're going to dance, you might as well look good doing it right? I purchased a package deal, attended their post-class tango sessions at Asura's Asian Bistro around the corner of the studio, and also attended the Leaders-Followers 3-hour workshop. In my experience, the Leaders-Followers workshop really helped me to understand what the "tango-feeling" was, and it helped me understand that tango was a dance that took a lot of nonverbal communication. The actual class allows you to learn new dance movements, but I find that it can be difficult to master advanced movements on the first try. The post-class sessions at Asura's are especially important for helping you to practice what you learned while it's still fresh in your head. They also practice a lot of the "cabasao ettiquette" which is a non-verbal argentine custom of properly asking someone to dance. Overall, I recommend this class to anyone. They not only teach you movements, but they also get down to the spirit of tango. They're also really flexible with scheduling as long as you let them know via email at least a day in advance. I know I have a tight work schedule where I can't attend class sometimes, and they were more than happy to accommodate. Lastly, you're not required to bring a partner because you'll partner up with students in the class and rotate so that you'll have a chance to dance with different people. TIP: It will help remember what you've learned if you record their demonstrations on your phone. It will also help if you take the time to remember the names of the movements and jot them down somewhere (I use my phone's notepad) read more

I came to Strictly Tango by chance - my friend told me about some tango open house. I always liked tango music but never knew how to dance. The flier promised that after the open house folks would be able to dance tango on some simple level. I gave it a try. I ended buying a package with some discount, and now Strictly Tango has been my favorite place to go for more than a year. When Monday workday is too much for the good mood, I think about evening when I'll learn new moves and practice, and my Monday becomes lighter and brighter! I really appreciate great teachers - director Sergio Segura, graceful and beautiful Natalie Laruccia, easygoing and encouraging Jack Hanley, - and really friendly atmosphere. In Strictly Tango school students are never insulted for lack of skills, just tactfully corrected, and praised when something is done right. Oftentimes, there are too few leaders, and then Sergio organizes 2 separate lines, for leaders and followers, and leaders rotate.  I enjoy going to worry-free regular classes on Mondays, free summer "Tango in the park" events, and their more advanced seminars for a particular subject, e.g. milonga (dance), waltz, etc. Strictly Tango makes my life happier! read more

I've taken tango at a couple of places and found this one unimpressive. Sergio was unwelcoming and his teaching style was unorganized. Dance elsewhere. And I am not a competitor. I am someone who was trying to learn to tango and felt very disappointed. This is the first review I've written on the site so I haven't set up a profile yet. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. I took the beginner tango class this week and it was a mess! They had 3 different classes at one time going on in a small studio. If you want to learn, go somewhere else! read more

This school gives the best classes in Argentine Tango in the city!

This place is terrific. You learn great technique and advanced moves immediately. Not very many people know about this studio yet, so as a beginner you often end up getting private or semi-private lessons, which is great! There is a real sense of community among the students and teachers, too. read more

I took several classes with Sergio last year while visiting NYC and I was really surprised at the level of teaching of the teacher Sergio. I found his style of teaching very clear, and he was so patient and everyone had a great time. I learned some really nice steps I'd never seen before. I visited again last month and took Advanced Tango Sequences and Tango Salon. I loved the Advanced class. More great moves to add to my repertoire. read more

For a beginner. I felt all the way from the management to the class, everything was so rude and not sensitive to beginners. I signed up for for a workshop with Eddy Hernandez, and the class was canceled last minute. No one communicated this to anyone, no one offered and apology and the whole experience of beautiful Tango was not a good one with this specific class. They believe that they are making us a favor to offer some classes! read more
