We stayed here for 4 nights on a recent trip to Michigan. Having spent my childhood in this town, I really wanted to stay in one of the beautiful historical homes I remembered driving by as a child. Dana and Chris were wonderful hosts. Chris assisted us with our luggage. Dana fixed wonderful breakfasts and accommodated my food sensitivities. We enjoyed it so much that we booked an additional night at the end of our trip before flying out of Grand Rapids the following day. The home has very nice common areas and both rooms we stayed in were clean and had amenities like refrigerators, microwaves and keurig machines. There is good off-street parking in back of the home. They were both helpful in answering our travel questions as well. We would love to stay here again on our next visit! read more

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Chris and Dana's lovely 1883 Queen Anne home. The room and bed were comfortable: we stayed in the Morning Room. The temperature of the room was easy to adjust. There was a Krups machine, microwave and mini fridge in the room. Breakfast was served in the elegant dining room. The food was fresh and delicious. We had four breakfasts at the Inn and all were different. Dana and Chris were attentive hosts. The house sits on a large piece of property and the garden and grounds are lovely. It was quiet at night. I recommend a stay if you are in Kalamazoo for a night or two. read more

We enjoyed a special event at the Stuart Avenue Inn, cosponsored by the Tudor House Tea and Spice shop on the Kalamazoo Mall. Our charming hosts provided paired sweets to go with teas selected to match. We enjoyed citrus fruits that had steeped in tea and herbs, followed by an Earl Grey Creme that was reminiscent of panna cotta, and last of all a flourless chocolate cake with raspberries and cream. These were matched perfectly with Earl Grey, then a milky Oolong, and finally a robust English Breakfast blend. The pairings were excellent, and our hosts explained their creation and ingredients in splendid detail. It's obvious they love their work. Highly recommended! read more

My wife and I stayed here for our 5th anniversary; our first time ever at a bed and breakfast. It was the most wonderful experience and one I look forward to repeating in the future. Dana and Chris are the most welcoming and pleasant people running a beautiful and quaint old inn. Every morning they made a delicious spread of light treats for breakfast, coupled with personally made orders of eggs, pancakes, with many ingredients from the local farmers market. They have numerous vegetarian options and Dana is even working with a number of Vegan items as well, (our first morning she had vegan scones for everyone to enjoy). When they aren't preparing breakfast, the two are wonderfully friendly, taking time to converse with their guests, asking about plans and offering suggestions on great places to go and things to do around town. Their furry, four-legged co-host Arlo is also there to help welcome you, often waiting at the foot of the stairs for guests to come down so he can come over to say hi. I'm not saying the inn is perfect; it's an old house and it has its quirks, but the two who run it are certainly top notch. During our first night, my wife and I noticed a persistent whistle coming from the vents. The next day we mentioned it to Chris and that day he looked into the cause and managed to find a solution to at least reduce the sound for our second night. The grounds are also a beautiful garden in the making. While not quite as beautiful as it could be yet, the two are slowly in the process of improving it. It was very relaxing walking around the grounds just to admire the peaceful ambiance provided by the quiet little garden. So if you find yourself in the Kalamazoo area, I highly recommend contacting the folks at Stuart Avenue Inn. I promise, you won't regret it. read more

We stayed in Alta's room. The bed was very comfy and the room was nice. The breakfast blew me away. Dana makes the best savory and sweet crepes I've ever had! We got one of each plus bacon, eggs and fruit. Dana, well she is the sweetest hostess and Chris, well he was up early with coffee and real cream. They both chatted with us too after breakfast. This place is magical. Love it love it love it love it love it. I've long been enchanted by the exterior of this building as well as the lovely grounds and gardens as I used to reside in this historic neighborhood. Yesterday, I finally got a chance to get inside and and am now so much more over the moon in love with it than ever. The decor and architectural details in the home itself are incredible. I feel like you could come here a thousand times and notice something new and amazing on each visit. The owners have also taken great pains to compliment the architecture with beautiful antique furnishings ranging from lovely stained glass lamps to a gargantuan grandfather clock. Your eye is always dazzled but never overwhelmed. Everything you want a bed and breakfast to be -- this place is. It's got the house mascot, a snuggly dog named Arlo (of course after Arlo Guthrie). You'll enjoy incredible nibbles, and warm welcoming hosts. I attended a mystery book club meeting here. The book was Death by Darjeeling, so the event was tea themed, of course. Every little nibble was exquisite -- from the crustless mini sandwiches to an array of delectable sweets and scones. My all-time favorite was the Earl Grey-infused shortbread cookie in the shape of a tea bag. It had a little hole for the string and a tea bag label with the business' logo on it. The ultimate wow factor swag! We do typically like to have our out of town guests stay with us at our house, but if we ever need overflow housing or if an acquaintance asked for a hotel recommendation in our area, there can be absolutely no question what I would recommend: Stuart Avenue Inn! read more

My boyfriend and I had a really great time here; we thought that the room we stayed in (the Gardener's Suite... or something like that) was spacious, clean and nicely appointed. The owners, Chris and Dana, were both very friendly and accommodating; they were ready to give suggestions for activities and restaurants and just seemed like bright, interesting people. Chris remembered on check-in that we were vegetarian, they made a delicious breakfast (with amazing Greek yogurt and honey as a side dish) and Dana was happy to give us the history of the house and grounds. They have a beautiful and incredibly sweet dog named Belvedere, but I get the impression they only introduce him if you make it clear that you're okay with dogs. I just think this place is great, and I would choose to stay here when in Kalamazoo. read more

I would give this place 0 stars if I could. They don't deserve 1 star. We stayed there one night, and it was way overpriced for the quality of the building, the room, and the neighborhood. Our room wasn't particularly comfortable or attractive, the floor and ceiling were dusty, and they had dozens of pumpkins outside along the windows left over from Halloween more than one month earlier. Again, a month after Halloween: those pumpkins were rotten by then. Dozens of them. Not the nicest view. The house was run-down and creepy. Very squeaky, noisy bed. The female innkeeper was very unfriendly, only greeting my husband and turning around when I offered a hand shake. Worst of all, though, the day after we left they emailed us accusing us of $150 in damages to the HANDLE of their in-room mini-fridge. $150 for a scratched handle. We didn't damage the fridge, but they would not return our phone calls or emails to discuss the matter. Instead they just went ahead and charged our card and we never heard back. They are not trustworthy people. Even aside from that bad experience, I would not recommend staying here because it is by no means worth the price. Combine that with unscrupulous "business" practices, and this would have to be the most regrettable place I have ever had the displeasure of visiting. read more

DON'T STAY IN ROOM NUMBER 5! I attended K College and was excited to stay at the inn located right across the street from the dorm I stayed in for a couple of years. The main floor is lovely - beautiful features in the old Victorian home. The room we stayed in was just okay. I've stayed in inns with much nicer rooms and beds. The room did however have a cute little kitchenette and reading nook. That being said, don't stay in that room. Please. I'm begging and warning you. A good night's sleep it does not provide. It is right above the kitchen. The owners, Dana and Chris, wake up before the crack of dawn to prepare a wonderful breakfast - two delicious crisps even - for all of their guests. The problem is that all the banging and talking from the kitchen below echoes throughout the room above - room #5. I am a very sound sleeper, but between the uncomfortable bed and hearing every word and noise from the kitchen below...well, I was up when they got up. Not what a was hoping for. So only stay in room #5 if you are a very, very early riser. read more

Chris and Dana(owners) couldn't have been more inviting(or accomodating). Two nights became three when all was said and done. Prior to goodbye they had accepted a package before my arrival and had it waiting as I stepped in the door, got me into a room(any room) after flying all night and arriving well before my room would become available, insisted on dropping me at the reception I was in town to attend and served 3 amazing breakfasts(ricotta eggs; delicious cinnamon french toast; fresh blueberries and peaches with yogurt and walnuts; roast beef hash and on) The public spaces were immaculate and the attitude of the place was relaxed and convivial, due in no small part to Chris and Dana. I noticed them tending to the massive lawnscape/garden that serves as the view from the breakfast room or the surroundings if you chose to take breakfast outside on the patio. Always welcoming. Never intrusive. The best antithesis of Hotel I've ever been to. Truly a pleasure to stay with them. read more

The common areas/parlors are beautiful and welcoming. Breakfast was DELICIOUS! Each morning was a new culinary surprise. My husband and I just returned from staying at The Stuart Avenue Inn and truly enjoyed everything about our visit. We were warmly greeted by Dana and given a quick orientation of the property on our way to our room "Rose" Our room was absolutely lovely and comfy. As it was our Anniversary we asked in our booking if we could have something vegan on the breakfast menu so we could enjoy it in the morning. Dana prepared a gorgeous and delicious meal and gave us great recommendations for vegan places in Kalamazoo from a truffle store to a dinner spots! Both Dana and Chris joined us for wine in the garden on our invite and we found them friendly informative and very genuine! So happy to have met them and enjoy their wonderful home! read more

We were on the last two days of our honeymoon and decided to spend them in Kalamazoo at the Stuart Avenue B&B in the Gardener's room. The room was the perfect size and separate from the main house. The innkeepers, Dana and Chris, were great and very friendly, easy to talk to and happy to give local recommendations of stuff to do, and ultimately why I like to go out of my way to stay at independently owned B&Bs. They built (and are still building on) a neat place with lots of character and make a rockin' breakfast and some fantastic pastries and cookies! read more

I had a sink, small frig, a microwave, and a small table with coffee pot and some treats. The breakfast was very tasty. I had pancakes and the flavor of the strawberries, blueberries, and the low carb base were perfect. No syrup should be added. And when you want a morning of relaxation then take your cup of coffee and walk through the beautiful garden that must cover at least half an acre and is filled with ferns, flowers, and the largest Japanese maple that I have ever seen. But I must say their thoughtfulness is outstanding. I did not have a car when I stayed and had my first ever gallstone attack at 11pm at night. Dana rushed me to the emergency room and made sure that I had her phone number. I cannot thank them enough for their hospitality. read more

Long overdue review! Chris and Dana are wonderful hosts. My husband and I have been staying at the Inn for about four years when visiting our son in Kalamazoo. We've seen the progress they've made on their beautiful property. Now the progress they've made in their daily breakfasts has been amazing. The breakfasts were good in the past, now they are memorable! On our most recent visit, lemon ricotta pancakes one day (YUM), the next, made to order omelets with a choice of veggies and different cheeses and chicken sausage, daily homemade yogurt with granola. We were there when a vegan guest was served breakfast, and he was very happy with his breakfast as well. You will not be disappointed with this lovely b& b! read more

I have stayed at the Stuart Avenue Inn seven times and have come to think of it as a home away from home when I visit my daughter at Kalamazoo College. Innkeepers Dana and Chris have been unfailingly friendly in my experience. When I saw the "don't stay in Room #5" warning from another reviewer, I wondered if it was the room I've stayed in twice. We have stayed at Stuart Ave Inn twice now while visiting K College. It is a large Victorian house on a very pretty quiet street one block from the campus. The downstairs common area, with several sitting rooms and dining, is decorated consistent with the period and beautiful. We first stayed in one of the second floor rooms - large, quiet, pretty and comfortable. It is one of three B & Bs near the campus - very similar to Hall House in quality and far better than Henderson (and it goes without saying, light years better than the nearby Comfort Inn). On our last visit with some kids in tow we stayed in the top for suite. It's large and has a separate sleeping area (with two queens) but has a smallish bath. It's not as nice as the second floor rooms but pleasant and a great choice for a family looking for the B & B experience. Owners are great, friendly and helpful. The breakfast was top notch. The Inn is a great choice for visiting Kalamazoo, especially K College (if not visiting the college and looking to stay downtown-about 1/2 mile away Kalamazoo House is also excellent although not as laid back or quiet as the Inn). read more

I have stayed at this beautiful Inn twice now. The house is beautiful - and the restoration the owner's have been doing is really impressive! All of the rooms I've seen are attractively decorated, and very comfortable. The breakfasts were sumptuous and the atmosphere very friendly and relaxed. We were able to bring our dog with us the last time - and the hosts were really sweet to her - even walking her in their garden while we visited after breakfast! read more

I stayed at the Stuart Avenue Inn for 4 days last week during a business trip at Kalamazoo College and I'm so glad I did. This B&B was recommended to me by a local who had never stayed there himself but had heard good things about it. The house and grounds were absolutely beautiful. They had some renovations taking place, but it did not impact my stay at all. It was less than a 5 minute walk to the campus, plus the downtown restaurants were all close to walk to as well. The inn keepers and their dog were super friendly and accommodating. I felt comfortable, as if I was staying in someone's cozy home, while feeling like I had my privacy at the same time. The room I stayed in wasn't fancy or anything, but it was comfortable and clean enough, and it had a mini kitchenette. Breakfast each day was delicious. If I ever have reason to go back to Kalamazoo I would definitely stay there again. read more

When we drove up we were a little worried when we saw the outside of the inn which is being resided. However once we looked at the beautiful grounds ,gardens and the lovely interior we were happy we had found this place. Our room -4-was lovely clean and ready early.The location of the inn is in a beautiful neighborhood, very convenient to downtown. Had an excellent stay at the Stuart Avenue Inn. The house is located near downtown Kalamazoo but is on a quiet residential neighborhood street. The house is very large and comfortable with a beautiful period correct interior decoration. My wife and I stayed in the Bartlett room which is refreshingly decorated as a man's room instead of flowers and girly things as is often the case in a B&B. Our room was quiet at night and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was exceptionally good and the coffee was hot and plentiful. The very friendly owners made an excellent recommendation for a local pub for dinner and were always very helpful. I would recommend this place to any of my friends without hesitation. read more

I had a great stay at the Stuart Avenue Inn. The guests who had reserved our room for the previous night got snowed in, so my boyfriend and I were given a free upgrade - fine with us! The Inn is beautiful inside, well-maintained, and the owners are extremely friendly. We had a nice breakfast the next morning, and they gave us good recommendations for dinner and brunch when we were passing through the following day. We would definitely stay there again if we pass through Kzoo. We couldn't recommend it more. read more

I would disagree wholeheartedly with the previous two reviews! We just returned from a Labor Day weekend at the Stuart Avenue Inn in Kalamazoo, MI, and we were very impressed at the accomodations. We arrived at the Inn a bit early, and even though there was a wedding on the grounds, Chris and Dana (and Belvedere--more on him later) gave us a warm welcome and tour of the Inn. We stayed in the Bartlett Room, which has a comfortable king-sized bed (best sleep I've had in a long time!) and antique furnishings, along with a TV, refrigerator, and microwave. Although the shower is somewhat cozy, the bathroom is clean and inviting and supplied with soap made by a local artisan. Chris and Dana were helpful when asked what restaurants to visit and how to find the local bicycle trails. Belvedere, their more than friendly dog, acted as the Inn's greeter, always ready to welcome you back from your day's activities and to make you feel as if you've just come home. They even said that they were hoping to award Belvedere with the "world's most petted dog," and I believe he has the title by a longshot! The morning breakfasts were tasty, and felt a bit indulgent, with offerings such as lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberry sauce to eggs with southwest potatoes and fresh fruit. Although we didn't require a special menu, apparently, with notice, they will honor special diets and restrictions (if you do not have any special restrictions, I would recommend you sample their daily specials--don't worry about calories!). The location is ideal--close to downtown Kalamazoo with Kalamazoo College directly across the street. The Kalamazoo River Valley Trail, a 13-mile paved trail, is nearby, and a short 5-mile bike ride on this trail will take you to the much longer Kal Haven Trail. The Kal Haven Trail is a 33.5 mile crushed limestone trail that leads from Kalamazoo to South Haven. Although we did not ride the entire Kal Haven Trail, we did ride the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail and found it scenic and somewhat challenging. All in all, we had an enjoyable weekend and if you find yourself in the Kalamazoo area, we highly recommend a stay at the Stuart Avenue Inn. read more

We had a wonderful stay in Alta's room , as our first Bed and Breakfast experience. The staff were very friendly, dog was incredibly well behaved, and it was a great environment. We were attending a wedding downtown, which was a fine walk. The breakfast the next morning- homemade yogurt with nuts, fresh juices and coffee, ginger pancakes with a brown sugar, lemon, Chardonnay reduction topped with pears, and veggie sausage- was all delicious! My husband and I stayed 2 nights in October, 2016. Dana and Chris have done a fantastic job of making this inn beautiful inside and out. It is very clean and inviting. The renovations they have completed are wonderful and the ones in progress look great. Breakfast was out of this world! We were asked if we had any dietary restrictions, which we didn't but it was nice that they were mindful of those who might. Dana and Chris shared history of both the inn (fascinating!) and the surrounding area. We loved meeting the family dog, who was as sweet and low-key as can be. We just stayed here for two nights during the Division II Girls State tennis finals at Stowe Stadium. The location is literally across the street from the tennis courts, making it a huge convenience since you don't have to worry about parking at Kalamazoo College - just walk over there! The Inn Keepers are so incredibly nice - chatty yet not intrusive at all. We had some early matches so they were very nice to accommodate our needs for breakfast. They breakfast is DELICIOUS - if you stay, I hope you get Dana's lemon ricotta pancakes! They are AMAZING! The rooms are large and spacious, and with the new HVAC and individual digital thermostats, our room was heavenly in the nearly 90 degree weather. Arlo is the resident dog and he is eager for some pets but is one of the most polite dogs I have ever met - never over-rambunctious and only approaches you if you invite him. He stays on the main floor so don't worry about him going up to the bedrooms. The gardens are gorgeous and there is plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy the nice weather. Loved it! read more
