It's a great walk to any of the local breweries and bars, and they have maps and can recommend anything for out of town guests. The hotel staff was extremely nice and it was clean and nicely decorated and furnished, however the mattresses are horribly uncomfortable. Our backs are aching after sleeping on them. We were also disappointed about the breakfast situation. Their website stated there are two different breakfast times you could sign up for, however when we arrived we noticed the sign up sheet only had breakfast at 9 am and we had to be on the road by 9. There was no earlier option or later option for sit down breakfast. We opted for a to go breakfast which stated there would be a protein, dairy, grain and fruit. What we received was a hard boiled egg in a ziploc bag and a yogurt parfait and canned cranberry juice. Very disappointing when the menu for sit down was stuffed French toast and strattata. read more

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine myself in Kalamazoo in November of 2008. I know nothing about Michigan (or the Midwest really) but I know there is this town call Kalamazoo because I randomly know two people from there. Anyhoo. . . Mike kidnapped me from work one Friday telling me we were headed to Wisconsin for the weekend. With visions of cheese in my head, we drove towards Michigan (so I didn't notice we were going in the opposite direction of Wisconsin - oops) and around 8 p.m. (EST by the way) ended up at the gorgeous, the perfect, bed and breakfast called the Kalamazoo House. Honestly, this place is everything you want a B&B to be - quaint, cozy, quiet, clean - the list goes on and on. Laurel and Terry (the owners) are phenomenal and you can tell they love what they do. The breakfast is not your normal, continental fare (eggs, bacon, made-to-order omelets, etc.) and if you do stay, please go down to the wine and cheese happy hour because you may meet the nicest folks (we did - holler ladies' fondue club!). The location is fantastic too because it is close to downtown and not very far from some lovely Michigan wineries - you can absolutely make a weekend of it! Mike and I will be back each year because this is the spot where we got engaged. It was special beyond words and I couldn't imagine it any different. Laurel and Terry even brought us champagne the next morning and to celebrate with the rest of the guests! Not only does the Kalamazoo House hold a special place in my heart (so cheesy but you only get engaged once, right?) but it is in the top of my five-star reviews! My husband and I ended up here one weekend when we were doing a nostalgia tour of Kalamazoo - we were college sweethearts who met at WMU and later moved away from the area, but have a special place in our hearts for Kzoo. We were there during the off season (some time in October) and didn't call ahead for reservations and just figured we'd be able to get a room at one of the B&Bs in town, since we knew there were several. Well, it turns out that the one we knew best was undergoing repairs and was otherwise deserted, and a second only had one room left, and you had to leave your room and go down a flight of stairs to get to a communal bathroom. So, nope on that one. Lucky us, Kalamazoo House had a cancellation and fit us in. The room was tiny, and there's a fair bit of traffic noise since it's right downtown (including hearing a couple police or ambulance sirens in one night) but those are, literally, my only complaints. Our host and hostess were WONDERFUL, the breakfast was tasty and filling, and the location is perfect if you want to explore downtown on foot. It's almost literally next door to the Kalamazoo Institute of Art. The price for our tiny room seemed reasonable as well. Highly recommended. read more

When I think B&Bs, I tend to think of mismatched furniture, tea cosies, overcooked eggs, and overall discomfort. However, this was the PERFECT place to stay in Kalamazoo, and probably the best B&B experience I have ever had. I was working at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (which is literally next door), so the location was ideal, but the B&B itself was absolutely wonderful. Laurel was waiting for me at the door when I arrived (they ask your arrival time in advance to be sure to be there to greet you). She showed me around--the DVDs I could borrow, the fridge with sodas, the water cooler, glasses, coffee and teas, etc. She explained that I signed up for my desired breakfast time and food choice that evening, and let me know there would be a happy hour at 5. She was friendly and helpful without being overbearing. She showed me how to use the door code, then showed me up to my room--the Fireplace King Room #3. It was cozy but still upscale for what I think of as far as Bed and Breakfasts are concerned. It had every amenity I have come to expect from hotels--wireless (free), nicely appointed bathroom, nice linens, flatscreen tv, individual temperature controls. But it also had the charm of an old home with a fireplace, nice furniture, etc. I spent the afternoon wandering around, but returned at 5 for the happy hour on the porch, which was delightful. Laurel is clearly a great gardener, and it was nice to enjoy it. The other guests there were friendly and apparently frequent visitors, but Laurel and Terry were fun to talk to. The house itself dates to the 1870s and was the home of a wealthy cigar manufacturer (apparently the largest of about 50 cigar producers in Kalamazoo alone!) . It was fun to learn about the house, about their experience in running it as a B&B, and enjoying a glass of wine in the beautiful spring weather. I went out for dinner that evening (a nice stroll over to the Bell's Brewery cafe), and when I returned, there was a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies with my name on it in the hallway. It was the perfect way to finish the evening while watching a DVD from the collection they have for guests to borrow. Breakfast in the morning was wonderful. I was impressed that they had extensive options for almost every conceivable diet--gluten free, veggie friendly, low carb, etc, etc. I chose the omelette, which was delicious--and had a kick! But to start, you were served a nice little place of fresh fruit with a mini muffin, along with coffee or tea and juice. Honestly, it was one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time--including fancy-pants brunch places! It was lovely, and great since I was headed out on a really long road trip and wouldn't be having real meals for a couple of days. There were lots of spacious common spaces throughout the house, which made me wish I was going to be there a bit longer to curl up with a book and a cup of tea and enjoy the surroundings. If you are in the area, stay here. You will not regret it! read more

My husband and I stayed one night at the charming Kalamazoo House Bed & Breakfast as we had business at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, conveniently right next door. When we arrived, proprietors Laurel and Terry were personable, welcoming and gave us a tour and history of the house. Our room (#3) was beautifully appointed and the bed was very comfortable with fine linens. The en suite bathroom was brightly lit and included embroidered robes for our use. Fresh flowers were by the bedside. A carafe of water was nearby. We ordered our breakfast and time the day before from Terry's varied menu. Breakfast was served promptly in a lovely dining room by the fireplace. The omelet and frittata were handsomely presented with homemade bread, delicious and filling. The electric, remote controlled fireplace added a safe, cozy touch, especially since the weather was frigid. When our car wouldn't start and we were about to call for road service, Terry volunteered to jump start it. That worked and saved us a lot of time. The B&B is near The Park Club of Kalamazoo, where we dined as guests, and the Central City Tap House, among other attractions. Let's face it. I'm a picky, high maintenance, treat me like I matter, traveler. I really don't care for B&B's because typically they equate to charmingly small and uncomfortable but not Laurel and Terry's wonderland. No darlin' this is a whole new level. Beautifully appointed rooms with beds you can actually sleep in, individual heating units, updated bathrooms. Cozy, cozy. My room had a huge whirlpool I delighted in each night. And ladies, I had a vanity table to apply makeup and do hair. Very convenient. The rooms were sound proofed so I could crank the TV or my music w/o disturbing my floor mates. Oh, and honey the food, the breakfast, well I didn't want to leave for work. I wanted to sit around and drink the real coffee. None of that watered down why did you bother stuff. Laurel makes a deep rich coffee that almost didn't make me miss my espresso. For breakfast I had Terry's Hash which he says has a "giddy up" appeal; yes sir I was on fire all morning. The baked eggs with dill and Havarti cheese was happy in my tummy; and the crustless quiche was lovely.This Gluten Free mama was happy. Did I mention cookies at night? Beautiful house. Nice people. Wonderful place to stay. You don't make any sacrifices staying at this B&B. The Kalamazoo House is a gorgeous building that has been restored to perfection and has all of the amenities you need. The first floor has the dining area, the "bar" where the wine and cheese socials take place and a sitting room. The 2nd floor has guest rooms that open up into a common sitting area. Our room was on the 3rd floor. The only bad thing I can say is that the last set of stairs are quite steep, so you should get a room on the 2nd floor if that will be a problem for you. Our room was very well appointed and spacious. It has a comfortable king size bed, TV, hair dryer etc. You have your own thermostat in the room and the air conditioning worked very well -- even in the depths of a July heat wave. The owners are very friendly and customer focused. As an added bonus, they put out cookies for all the guests each night. Breakfast has a wide variety of options that change each day and there is always a low-carb alternative (yay!). The house is in downtown Kalamazoo right next to the Art Museum and within a few blocks walking distance of the best restaurants in town. I highly recommend this B&B to anyone staying in the Kalamazoo area. read more

My wife and I, my brother and sister-in-law, and two friends stayed at the Kalamazoo House for our son's wedding weekend. Perfect location, easy access to downtown stores, pubs and restaurants. Delicious breakfasts, Keurigs on each floor, chocolate chip cookies each night. Our room was large and comfortable. It was quiet and restful. We lingered over the delicious breakfast with family and friends and then relocated to the front porch to enjoy the morning. Breakfast included fresh fruit, juices and wonderful main entrées. We would highly recommend staying at the Kalamazoo House. Our experience confirmed that the proprietors, Steve and Steph are committed to making the B&B inviting and your stay comfortable. This is a lovely place to stay in Kalamzoo and the location is great. The room we stayed in (#4) was large and well appointed. Very clean and very comfortable. We did get to enjoy one breakfast in the dining room, which was very good and hard to choose between the two main course items. The other morning we had an early commitment, but you can request a "to-go" breakfast which was fruit and yogourt. Coffee and tea (and other drink items like soda) are available anytime, so we were set to start our day. The location is an easy walk to Kalamazoo College (where we were headed), or the downtown area. We were sorry not to have had time to visit the Art Museum right next door. WMU would be a little too far to walk (depending on how ambitious you are??). We will definitely include the Kalamazoo House in our next trip to Kalamazoo. read more

I can not say enough about how simply LOVELY Kalamazoo House is! We've stayed there 4 times over the last 10 years and it has always been top notch. Once you stay here, you will want to return again and again. This B&B has it ALL and you'll be hard pressed to find another place so special. This was our first stay with the new owners, Steve and Steph. They've taken over for Laurel and Terry, the previous owners who we really liked. Steve was equally personable and engaging. (Steph wasn't available during our stay this time so we didn't get to meet her.) The house was built in 1868 and has an interesting history to it. Steve has put together a book on the house that you can read while you're there and find out fascinating facts about the place. Lots of old pictures in the book as well. Give it a look if you enjoy history. Every little convenience has been provided for you. You feel well taken care of from the buttery soft sheets, comfortable beds, 24 hr. beverage station, beautifully presented delicious breakfasts, pillow bar, and the best: chocolate chip cookies and milk provided for each room before bed! They have thought of EVERYTHING. You'll be pleasantly surprised by all the thoughtful touches. This is the only place we have stayed when we go to Kalamazoo. Nothing else can compare. The house is located downtown right next to the art museum, which provides a "nightlight" of sorts with its gorgeous Chihuly sculpture hanging in the front windows. It's within a quick walk to a park, restaurants, bars, plenty of microbreweries, theaters, and shopping. We stayed here with friends and took the Brew Bus around on a route of microbreweries such as Arcadia, Bells, and several others. There's even one across the street from Kalamazoo House called Gonzo's Big Dogg that has great food and beer. Definitely stay at Kalamazoo House if you're in the area. You will love the experience and it'll feel like your own home. read more

This was our second stay, and we'll come again. The house is interesting, very well maintained and well-appointed, lush period decor and furnishings. Laurel and Terry are very focused on service and providing helpful information (including a highlighted downtown map of restaurants and attractions, a collection of restaurant menus). Delicious breakfast food including home-baked breads, and cookies and milk in the evening. Only small negative: the bed was lush and romantic, but not the most comfortable mattress (we're picky, both of us having some back issues), and a bit small (we were in one of the "queen" rooms, but the bed seemed noticeably narrower than our queen at home -- unless maybe it felt that way because it's one of those pillowtops where you can't like near the edge because you feel like you're falling off?). read more

Stayed in the premium king with whirlpool. Mansion was built in the mid 1800's and still has a couple of the original fixtures, chandeliers, etc. Hosts are awesome. Breakfast is okay. Room was awesome as long as you remember that it's a house not a hotel (i.e. Water takes a minute to get hot, shower is small, but 2 person jacuzzi makes up for it). If you don't drink, there's little to do in Kalamazoo, but we came to rest and get away from the noise so it was perfect for us. read more

The Kalamazoo House was a fantastic stay. Very beautifully maintained, all while clean with modern feels. This felt like the perfect stay, I only wish we had stayed in and enjoyed all the amenities like our fireplace in our room, our beautiful bath, or even the movies they had available for a cozy night in. We got in late and there were COOKIES nicely reserved on a plate with some wrap and our names on it. How thoughtful!! I will definitely be back as this was incredibly charming and the staff were so kind to assist in any request we had as we prepped to hold our wedding reception next door at KIA. My only regret about my wonderful Midwest vacation is that I didn't get to spend more time at Kalamazoo House! We were there at a slow time which meant I got to peek in on several of the vacant rooms. Each was unique and beautiful. Steve was wonderful; he went out of his way to please us and reassured me that if our scheduled transportation to the airport somehow failed, he could provide 'backup." Stayed here over Thanksgiving 2013 for the holiday, my husband's birthday and to check out all of the Kalamazoo breweries. This place is amazing. A beautiful example of turn of the century opulence and architecture. Many features are true to the late 1800's and others are modern. Very well maintained home. Our proprietors Laurel and Terry were a wellspring of information and recommendations. They were friendly and accommodating and we felt like we were guests in their home vs customers. The cookies and milk and delicious breakfasts were really great. They also had evening (local) beer, wine and cheese and snacks about 530pm. We were waited on like royalty and truly felt pampered. They have cable, internet, dvd's, books and magazines. We wanted for nothing. The linens and bathrobes were the highest quality and also available for sale to take home. We stayed in room #9 in the third floor converted attic (if you don't do stairs this room will be a HUGE challenge if not impossible) - Our king size bed was super comfy. All amenities were considered and provided. The bathroom was designed with a shorter person in mind but very functional (6'3" and 5'8" here). The thermostat was possessed by a heat devil and we had to regulate the room temp by keeping the window cracked. But the room itself was so beautiful it was a small issue in the overall experience. Only things we would change - a public restroom on main floor near the dining areas hiking up all the stairs to our room for a lavatory kept things exciting. A coffee maker (maybe a single serve Keurig) in the room or in the common area on each floor - again hefting those stairs for a coffee was forcing me to decaffeinate. Overall we loved the time we stayed here and would definitely consider staying again on the second floor, but will have to book way in advance. This is a B&B done right and it is in high demand. The Kalamazoo House Bed and Breakfast is the finest B and B we have ever stayed at. The inn keepers go beyond the norm to provide a beautiful, comfortable and welcoming home. The home has been lovingly restored , the bedrooms are huge and well appointed and the sitting area has multiple couches and a bar area. My first experience with a bed-and-breakfast. I don't know if all B-and-B's offer the tender loving care that Terry and Laurel do. They have set the bar high. I was so charmed by all of it. The warm reception Laurel and Terry gave my friends and me after we arrived, the historical tour Terry gave us as he showed us to our rooms, the uniqueness of each room ... that was just the start. Downtown Kalamazoo is beautiful, and there are many great shops and brew pubs within walking distance of the inn. Terry gave us an easy-to-follow map of the downtown area that he and Laurel created and took the time to go over the location of the brew pubs we were interested in. We went out on the town and had a wonderful time. When we returned late into the night, we found cookies on plates, wrapped in shrink wrap, with our names marked on them. They were delicious! We took advantage of the Keurig coffee the inn offers (and there's lots of tea and soda!), and I borrowed a DVD from their large collection and enjoyed a little film-watching in my room. There's a TV and DVD player in each room, and a large TV with a DVD player in the living room. My bed was perfect and my room very welcoming. I slept quite peacefully. And let me tell you about the breakfast ... The inn offers many options and accommodates those with dietary restrictions (such as vegans). I got the vegan special with bacon and cheese (my requests obviously turned it non-vegan, ha ha). Chef Terry cooked up a hearty meal for each of us, with homemade bread, delicious jam, freshly squeezed juice and freshly brewed drip coffee. My friends and I enjoyed a friendly chat with fellow guests as we munched away on our breakfast, quite content. The personal touches I experienced at the Kalamazoo House were beyond my expectations.
