Walking in to their new shoppe for the first time I was greeted with the lovely Nancy. Her warm welcome was very pleasant and friendly. Stubbe serves a spectacular spread of chocolate treats; ranging from chocolate bon bons, to truffles, to bars, and chocolate covered candied confections. Plus their array of quality cakes! Totally drool worthy! I love their flourtines! Although I don't typically consume butter, these delicious circles of heaven are an exception I will always make. Candied almonds (sliced and or slivered), cherries and other nuts and dried fruit, shaped in a circle, topped with a caramel like glaze, dipped in dark chocolate, add a crunch of sweetness and a smile to your day. Perfect as a gift or a special Sunday afternoon pick-me-up. After tea perhaps, or added to a gift basket. Absolutely worth every penny! That's where the plastic came from. I kept it and went back to purchase some truffles. It's great they accept that & work toward impact of single use plastic. Their older location on DuPont was a lot closer to me, a mere hop, skip and a jump away. Yet venturing up the hill isn't so bad. I will be visiting again soon and anticipate on actually finding the place. Since I missed it now twice walking passed it. The sign in my opinion is not large enough. And the grey exterior tends to blend in, for some reason. I am sure the extra space for their kitchen, office and staff room are a definite step up from their older location, however I much preferred the warmth their lil spot on DuPont conveyed. Outdoor planters and a place that did not communicate corporate or modern, which unfortunate to say their new place says to me. A run down of the treats I got. The Gewurztraminer truffle always appeals because of how pretty it looks. The artistry of white and milk chocolate on the exterior just looks so inviting. I forgot though there was white wine and found out pretty quickly as that flavour burst into my mouth when I bit into my half of the truffle. So for those that like a lil alcohol in their truffle this one is sure to win you over. The honey truffle was less appealing. It didn't have a strong honey flavour to me. I would not get this one again. The caramel sea salt bon bon... Delicious... So rich, so creamy, so well balanced! The balsamic, again a little on the bland side. I was expecting it to have a strong soury taste to it, even though balsamic vinegar has a touch of sweetness to it too. In any case, not a fan. The blood orange, again absolutely delicious. Loved their sincere craftmanship. I got the "Stubbe Classic Twelve Piece Chocolate box, 12pcs assorted bonbons and truffles) as a Valentine's day gift. We enjoyed a full of rich sensory experiences. These days, chocolates/bonbons that draw people's/SNS'/media attentions are with flashy swirly technicolor exteriors. The shops are competing to seek attentions for their "exotic" "adventurous" flavors which are not carefully conceived, lacking harmony and texture. Quite often, the flashy looks outshines the substance. I do not see much value in these. So, I wanted to find a chocolatier that satisfies needs of traditionalists, and helps me come back to the basics! Stubble Chocolates is exactly what I have been looking for! The box had the following flavors: # Champagne (truffle) # Praline Feuilletine (bonbon) # Caramal sea salt (bonbon) # Attache (truffle) # Kir Royale (truffle) # Marzipan (bonbon) Most memorable piece was Attache. Smoothly melts in the mouth. The peak flavor (passion fruit) comes later and lingers to the finish. The runner up was Carame sea salt. The texture was elegant. The moment I felt the flakiness of sea salt crystal, then it melts into the sweet caramel, then it integrates with a bitterness of the dark chocolate. Multi-dimensional and well harmonized. Praline Feuilletine's hazelnut filling with delicate & crispy crape flakes was delicious. The thin dark chocolate shell completes the flavor. No two chocolates were alike. Minimal and humble design. Yet beautifully & carefully made. The chocolate itself was high quality with subtle, long lasting flavor. Bravo!!!!!!!!!!! I also got Mini Florentines for my partner the whisky lover :). Roasted almonds and pistachios are caramelized with chopped cherries, and sit on a dark chocolate wafer. Perfect companion :) Happy!! read more

I sought this place out specifically as I was looking for a Christmas Stollen and I read some reviews that indicated Stubbe has these. I called ahead to be sure they had some before driving down there. Upon arrival, I was greeted warmly by one of the staff and had a quick look around to see if there was anything else I might want to pick up. I'm not a big chocolate lover, but some of their truffles looked very nice. The store itself is well laid out and items mostly labeled and priced clearly. It can be annoying to find something you like but not priced clearly. I went to the counter and asked for the Stollen only to be told they didn't have any. Luckily, another staff member overheard and corrected the other employee to let her know that they did have some. They were in a bin behind the counter. I was a bit surprised that the first person didn't even bother to check, she just said, "no, we don't have any". Anyway, she got the loaf, which was about 4.5" by 7" (very tiny compared to ones I've had previously) and rang me up. It cost a whopping $28.75, which to me is really expensive for the size. I almost didn't get it, but I knew I'd kick myself if I didn't get to have it this year. I understand that ingredients are expensive, but that was quite a sticker shock for me. The Stollen was quite heavy and dense, which was nothing at all like the ones I've had in the past. I'm used to a much lighter dough, but I've noticed that some foods can be drastically different depending on the area a person is from. This bread was very dry and crumbly and heavily spiced. It had a lot of dried fruit and a strip of marzipan in the centre. Taste-wise, it wasn't really to my liking, but again, it could just be a matter of preference so I don't fault them for that. I just didn't think the texture was right, being so dry. I'm still glad I tried it, but I'm going to keep trying other places to see if I can find something more suited to my personal taste. I would recommend this place for chocolate, even though I didn't try any myself; the selection was good and would probably make a very nice gift. read more

Got some boozy truffles and they were so good! The entire store smelled delicious with the rich aroma of chocolates and baked goods. Friendly service, neat displays and cute themed chocolates. They had some Rosh Hashanah ones in the window display as well as Thanksgiving ones. read more

The selection of chocolates here is impressive! All different %s of dark chocolate, different seasonings (salted, spicy), and mixins (fruit, nuts). They also have really pretty truffles that you can get individually or by the box. I was actually there around Halloween and they had a ton of seasonal items including full bars with spiderwebs, chocolate ghosts, and pretty elaborate pumpkins! They also had some Hannukah themed chocolate gifts at this time including chocolate shaped dreidels. Great place to pick up some treats. read more

I stumbled by this chocolate shop when I was in the area. It is set up really nicely and the chocolates look amazing. Unfortunately, I didn't try any of the chocolates due to my lactose intolerance but I would definitely come back to buy someone a gift. Dupont and Christie is a strange location for a chocolatier, near the railway overpass and around the corner from the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall. The minimalist blue and white shop looks like a better fit for King Street or Yorkville. Daniel Stubbe was running the shop when I went in today. He could not have been more friendly or more helpful even though I probably interrupted him in the middle of a delicate chocolate engineering process. I grabbed a box of pre-selected and wrapped truffles, just to be fast. But, he insisted that I take the time to make up a box of my own choices which he wrapped up for me ($9.50 for six truffles). The best news is that the chocolate is very, very good. Besides the truffles, block chocolates, chocolate-dipped fruit and gift boxes, there's also a case of traditional European cakes. Daniel runs monthly chocolate workshops in the store's kitchen, too. I'm especially crazy about the caramel chocolate bar ($5). An incredible chocolate shop and German bakery. I picked up my annual stollen here this weekend. Not that I'd admit it to Oma but it's the best stollen I've had. Extremely dense with lots of dried fruit and nut and a big seam of marzipan down the middle. The chocolates are great too, with a wide variety of bars, truffles, and seasonal items. I also picked up an almond florentine which was incredible: dense, chewy and intensely flavoured of carmelized sugar and almond. The cakes are classic German tortes: dense, rich, and not that sweet. I've only tried the Cointreau but it was excellent. Highly recommended. read more

Stubbe chocolates creates some of the best chocolates by pairing good quality chocolate they create themselves in the back of the shop with both traditional and non-traditional flavours. The one chocolate which stood out for me was the blood orange chocolate which has a slightly sharp tang without being sour. The special milk chocolate truffle had a unique sugar fronting which I thought would make the chocolate far too sweet but in fact was perfect when savouring or chewing the chocolate. The cappuccino was a triumph of coffee flavouring, which was for once not overpowered by the sweetness of the chocolate. The white chocolate was used masterfully here to sweeten the coffee without it tasting of nothing but sugar the covered in a beautifully balances dark chocolate. I highly recommend this chocolate shop and would be confidant buying any chocolates from here as a special gift. read more

Ordered 2x 48 piece online for delivery along with a chocolate bunny. I received a call from someone at the store advising me that their website was wrong and that I had paid for a 12 piece box. Wouldn't honour their mistake in fact I settled for them to ship 3X 24 piece box. 5 minutes later I receive an email saying my order cancelled. Don't trust them. They will tell you that you under paid in order to upsell you for more expensive. Poor customer service at best. read more

Over the years I'd played with chocolate, but I found myself spending an inordinate amount of time trying to temper my chocolate. Because that's what I'd read about online, you see. Melting, cooling, more chocolate, measuring temperatures - rinse and repeat a million times - to get things just so. And yet, I couldn't imagine that the multitudes of chocolatiers out there were fussing over temperatures and crystal formation like I had over Christmas. I clearly needed some hands-on guidance. The first place that came to mind was George Brown. But their Introduction To Chocolate course was overkill - not only was it 11 classes, but it had a pre-requisite as well. Then I came across Stubbe Chocolates and found their classes to be exactly what I needed: a compact demo with a hands-on component about tempering chocolate. Perfect. Since most people don't have a giant cooled marble slab at their disposal, the class at Stubbe would teach the widely adopted seed method. We would learn how to properly melt and prepare the chocolate, as well as make our own mendiants and fashion a box made of chocolate to contain them, over the course of two hours. With Daniel's calm voice, he guided us through the process while we had some good laughs at are feeble attempts. It was a fun evening spent where I was able to learn (and relax) when tempering chocolate - just what I needed. I also managed to snap some great photos (see blog) since the room we were working in was gleamingly bright and white. I received a layered chocolate cake from here (thanks Anuy) and it was disappointing. The bag is chic and signalled quality (the white box itself has no logo), but the cake inside was neither moist nor delicious. The layered chocolate was tasteless and the spongy parts made my mouth dry. To be frank, it is only my assumption that the cake was made and bought on the day I received it. read more

We have been going to Stubbe for over 20 years and love it. The truffles are fresh and delicious and cost about $2.50 a pop. The candied orange and ginger chocolate is also delicious. Other favourites include truffle logs and florentines. They offer a limited selection of classic European cakes such as Dobos and Sacher, but it is best to order ahead for cakes. They also do wedding and special occasion cakes. The cake exterior is solid chocolate so a bit hard to cut. Overall, a fantastic chocolate shop! read more

Though I've never actually tried the chocolate here I've always had great customer service. I've been in a couple of times buying gifts for people. The latest was for Easter. They had a big range of Easter chocolates. Whether you wanted to spend $2 or $200 there was something for everyone. Mr. Stubbe was working the cash register on my latest visit. While ringing people through he was carrying on friendly conversation with a couple of regulars but still made each customer feel welcome. He packaged up my purchases very nicely by wrapping them in tissue paper and their standard bags. I'll be back again and maybe next time I'll buy something for myself! The first time I received a box of Stubbe truffle and bonbons I was taken aback at how truly delicious and well made they were. Over the years they have been a Valentine staple for me and I've also been fortunate to receive them as a "just beccause". The dark chocolate truffles have so much depth you can savor the shell alone for minutes. Fillings are equally as good. You can taste the quality and craftsmanship in every bite. Standouts for me are the pear william, Irish coffee and mango. If you enjoy Soma, Leonidas or Chocolateria products definitely try Stubbe. read more

For the chocolate lover in your life that doesn't like their cake too rich or sweet the Hazelnut Torte ($28) at Stubbe is a great option. The cake is made with ground hazelnuts rather than flour so I imagine it's also gluten free if that's your thing. Between the layers of cake are layers of dark chocolate ganache. The whole cake is coated in a layer of milk chocolate and decorated beautifully with whole hazelnuts. The cake itself is a little dry and not very fluffy or spongy, probably due to the lack of flour, but it's still quite good. It's also not crazily sweet, which could be a good or a bad thing depending on your taste. Personally, I thought the sweetness was just right. read more

This is my favourite place in the whole city. I buy myself a birthday cake every year from here, sometimes two and always a bag of truffles to go along with it. Always the Spanish vanilla torte and then something else which ever takes my fancy. The handmade truffles are beautiful and the most adventurous flavours too. My friends love it when I've visited Stubbe because they too get to indulge. The marzipan treats are great too. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this place to anyone. Located near the corner of Christie and Dupont, I'm a bit glad that it's a far walk from my place. Any closer and I'll be here everyday ;) They make their chocolates in house... You can see the chocolatiers working in the back. I have tried their chocolates - great flavours, some better than others. But what keeps me coming back is their apple streudel. It's available in a full slab $10 or a half slab... O So Good! Great glazed crust packed with apples... I have a thing for apple desserts - I like to think it's healthier cuz there's fruit in it ;) They have short/early hours so it's hard to get here after work - they close at 6pm. Today was busy, lots of people prepping for Easter celebrations, but service is still prompt and friendly. Great place for specialty chocolate and desserts as gifts... or for yourself. read more

Yes, the chocolates are very good. Then again, hand made, small-batch chocolates are head & shoulders above anything you could buy at your grocery store (this includes the truffles Loblaws has). The focus of my adoration, are the cakes. From the Zuger Kisch Torte I had today, to the Truffle cake that first drew me in, every baked delight has been indulgent, light and enriching. They are an experience in what a good cake can be and how low we stoop when picking up the La Roccas off the grocery store cases. Also, yes, the chocolate is very very good. Simply outstanding. Go there for special occasion cakes that offer pure and intense flavours --- this is not the place for over-wrought whipped-cream bombs. This company did a outstanding job and delivered a great product!! I was looking for a very specific gift item and have never used them before. I am in So. California and used Goggle to find Stubbe Chocolates & Pastry. I contacted them by phone and received excellent customer service from Melissa. She was extremely helpful and thorough and took extreme measures to be sure Stubbe could provide me with my request. She further made very certain delivery was possible in the area I needed the chocolate covered strawberries to be delivered to. She followed through on her word by contacting me the next day in order to be certain the delivery location was possible and even contacted the receiving party to be certain they would be home on the day of delivery. They, the strawberries, were required to be kept cold and she was going to make sure the gift was received in the most absolute best condition. The gift did arrive on the day and during the delivery hours as expected. The receiving party stated the berries were delicious!!
