a box of chocolates
Aiko I.

Loved their sincere craftmanship. I got the "Stubbe Classic Twelve Piece Chocolate box, 12pcs assorted bonbons and truffles) as a Valentine's day gift. We enjoyed a full of rich sensory experiences. These days, chocolates/bonbons that draw people's/SNS'/media attentions are with flashy swirly technicolor exteriors. The shops are competing to seek attentions for their "exotic" "adventurous" flavors which are not carefully conceived, lacking harmony and texture. Quite often, the flashy looks outshines the substance. I do not see much value in these. So, I wanted to find a chocolatier that satisfies needs of traditionalists, and helps me come back to the basics! Stubble Chocolates is exactly what I have been looking for! The box had the following flavors: # Champagne (truffle) # Praline Feuilletine (bonbon) # Caramal sea salt (bonbon) # Attache (truffle) # Kir Royale (truffle) # Marzipan (bonbon) Most memorable piece was Attache. Smoothly melts in the mouth. The peak flavor (passion fruit) comes later and lingers to the finish. The runner up was Carame sea salt. The texture was elegant. The moment I felt the flakiness of sea salt crystal, then it melts into the sweet caramel, then it integrates with a bitterness of the dark chocolate. Multi-dimensional and well harmonized. Praline Feuilletine's hazelnut filling with delicate & crispy crape flakes was delicious. The thin dark chocolate shell completes the flavor. No two chocolates were alike. Minimal and humble design. Yet beautifully & carefully made. The chocolate itself was high quality with subtle, long lasting flavor. Bravo!!!!!!!!!!! I also got Mini Florentines for my partner the whisky lover :). Roasted almonds and pistachios are caramelized with chopped cherries, and sit on a dark chocolate wafer. Perfect companion :) Happy!!

Christmas Stollen
Danielle B.

I sought this place out specifically as I was looking for a Christmas Stollen and I read some reviews that indicated Stubbe has these. I called ahead to be sure they had some before driving down there. Upon arrival, I was greeted warmly by one of the staff and had a quick look around to see if there was anything else I might want to pick up. I'm not a big chocolate lover, but some of their truffles looked very nice. The store itself is well laid out and items mostly labeled and priced clearly. It can be annoying to find something you like but not priced clearly. I went to the counter and asked for the Stollen only to be told they didn't have any. Luckily, another staff member overheard and corrected the other employee to let her know that they did have some. They were in a bin behind the counter. I was a bit surprised that the first person didn't even bother to check, she just said, "no, we don't have any". Anyway, she got the loaf, which was about 4.5" by 7" (very tiny compared to ones I've had previously) and rang me up. It cost a whopping $28.75, which to me is really expensive for the size. I almost didn't get it, but I knew I'd kick myself if I didn't get to have it this year. I understand that ingredients are expensive, but that was quite a sticker shock for me. The Stollen was quite heavy and dense, which was nothing at all like the ones I've had in the past. I'm used to a much lighter dough, but I've noticed that some foods can be drastically different depending on the area a person is from. This bread was very dry and crumbly and heavily spiced. It had a lot of dried fruit and a strip of marzipan in the centre. Taste-wise, it wasn't really to my liking, but again, it could just be a matter of preference so I don't fault them for that. I just didn't think the texture was right, being so dry. I'm still glad I tried it, but I'm going to keep trying other places to see if I can find something more suited to my personal taste. I would recommend this place for chocolate, even though I didn't try any myself; the selection was good and would probably make a very nice gift.

Amazing quality, love that they kept their mask policy. Makes amazing gifts (for yourself too!). Beautiful presentation. Place smells amazing. How many times can I say amazing ....

Stubbe on Dupont St.

Dupont and Christie is a strange location for a chocolatier, near the railway overpass and around the corner from the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall. The minimalist blue and white shop looks like a better fit for King Street or Yorkville. Daniel Stubbe was running the shop when I went in today. He could not have been more friendly or more helpful even though I probably interrupted him in the middle of a delicate chocolate engineering process. I grabbed a box of pre-selected and wrapped truffles, just to be fast. But, he insisted that I take the time to make up a box of my own choices which he wrapped up for me ($9.50 for six truffles). The best news is that the chocolate is very, very good. Besides the truffles, block chocolates, chocolate-dipped fruit and gift boxes, there's also a case of traditional European cakes. Daniel runs monthly chocolate workshops in the store's kitchen, too. I'm especially crazy about the caramel chocolate bar ($5). The texture is wonderful. truffles: http://stubbechocolates.com/truffles.html cakes: http://stubbechocolates.com/cakesandpastries.html workshops: http://stubbechocolates.com/classes.html

Hazelnut Torte and Sea Salt Dark Chocolate were lovely! Melts-in-your-mouth type of goodness. The girl behind the counter was extremely kind and described each of the cakes they had in the display while I sampled their Bittersweet Dark Truffle (!). Definitely will be back for more indulgent sweets!

Qype User (deCabb…)

Stubbe chocolates creates some of the best chocolates by pairing good quality chocolate they create themselves in the back of the shop with both traditional and non-traditional flavours. The one chocolate which stood out for me was the blood orange chocolate which has a slightly sharp tang without being sour. The special milk chocolate truffle had a unique sugar fronting which I thought would make the chocolate far too sweet but in fact was perfect when savouring or chewing the chocolate. The cappuccino was a triumph of coffee flavouring, which was for once not overpowered by the sweetness of the chocolate. The white chocolate was used masterfully here to sweeten the coffee without it tasting of nothing but sugar the covered in a beautifully balances dark chocolate. I highly recommend this chocolate shop and would be confidant buying any chocolates from here as a special gift.

Their truffles are the best in the city. Try the kir royale truffle - it's pink with a sugar coating, quite remarkable.

The aesthetic and the attention to detail when it comes to these desserts flawless, and exceptional. I enjoyed every single bite of my dessert. For drinks, we got hot chocolates, and they had one of the best hot chocolates I've ever tasted, and I'm not exaggerating. It was the perfect drink and taste to eat my dessert. Location: The location is very pretty, but it's pretty casual. The seating is pretty close to other guests in the restaurant or tables of two if I'm not mistaken. This is a perfect place to go with friends or family or on a quick date or by yourself. This place looked like it was located on a main street with street parking, but because I was visiting in Toronto, I'm not sure how the parking works as we took Uber. Service: The service was great, and they were very friendly and answered any questions regarding the desserts on display to help us pick the perfect one for ourselves. They also brought the food to our table, including the drinks. I 100% would go back to this location.

The strawberry shortcake is fluffy, just the right about of cream and sweetness. The matcha tiramisu is rich in matcha flavour and just the right amount of sweet to offset the bitter matcha. The regular tiramisu has a strong and balanced coffee flavour. The black sesame cake has a great texture and strong black sesame flavour. I enjoy vanilla addition too. The mango cheesecake is really smooth and a real mango flavour (no artificial flavour). It's been popular when I bring cakes to gatherings , but I also enjoy popping by to grab a slice. They have 50% off older slices which is a steal if you visit on the right day. Haven't tried their cafe food or drinks but they do have a nice ambiance and seating.

It's probably easier to for them to order ahead of time, but they've been super accommodating with my last minute orders as well. Their prices are honestly quite good for the Yorkville area as well and I've seen baked goods and cakes go for much more around here.

Delicious desserts, waffles ice cream, smoothies, and more. We ordered: Medium Mango Smoothie - $7.95 Simple Pleasures Waffle - $15.50 The waffle was light and fluffy and the toppings of fruit and chocolate were a great combination. I requested to be lighter on the chocolate but there was still a LOT of chocolate on our waffle. The mango smoothie was refreshing and sweet. I started going to Holy Choco when they first opened and their service was really good from some of the owner. Super attentive and caring staff. Unfortunately, it's since gone downhill since they've hired new staff and we had a number of small problems when visiting this time (dirty tables, dirty cutlery, requested if our food could be put in to go containers because they didn't want to do dishes, unfriendly, etc.) I hope they improve upon these staffing issues soon. Their seating area is good for friends and groups to loiter. Also, if you plan on bringing a laptop, they have MANY OUTLETS!!

For items: we chose strawberry, banana, halal marshmallow, waffle bites, brownie bites, and Oreo with a round of cappuccino's ($5.50 each). The interior is nicely decorated with a cute angel photo op in the back, and window bar seats and couches to choose from. Great spot for 2-4 people. The only criticism I could have was it took a while to get our order. So, it's not one of those places you can be dipping into expecting to be done in 20mins! We stayed for nearly 3 hours and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

Second, the guys who run this place - polite to everyone - smart storekeepers. A smile and a polite word keep people coming back. Now to the important stuff: A huge range of chocolates from the United Kingdom ... OMG ... toffees, choccies, the works. Some really good biscuits and good, old British "crisps" (Walkers). This place is my not-so-secret indulgence ... mmmmmmmmmmmmm. Ahhh ... yes! Their products are very, very fresh. They pay attention to expiry dates. This is important - you are paying premium dollar for imported choccies and biscuits and you want them to be fresh (which they are, here). Enjoy! P.S. And if you're into it ... they also carry TINNED HAGGIS from Scotland.

Despite the…read moresparse selection, the stale bulk candy and the expired goods, I came here because I loved the idea of an independent candy store. I will never again enter this business. I spent over $50 on a few items. The owner gave me an itemized receipt. As I was leaving the store, I saw that I was charged for the jumbo version of two items I purchased. I went back to the owner and respectfully showed him the receipt and the items. He was incredibly defensive, scanned the item and showed me the item was marked at the price it should be, but still showed as 'jumbo.' I asked him to scan the jumbo item so I could see I was not being charged for a jumbo and it truly was a system error. He scanned it and nothing was showing up. I'm not entirely sure on this point - but I feel like he was trying to enter a higher price for the jumbo as I stood there so he could justify the incorrect price. I asked for either a refund or to be given the jumbo item since that's what I was being charged for. I don't care if there's an error in your system. Fix it - it's not my problem. The real problem was how this was dealt. The owner wouldn't let me get two words in. He spoke over me for a solid 5 minutes. I kept asking if I could be given the courtesy of explaining what was wrong since he clearly wasn't understanding. I said 'I've been shopping here for ten years. Can you please just let me explain what the problem is without talking over me?" And he said "I don't care. This store's been open for 25 years. It doesn't need you." I was floored. Just a verbal barrage of condescension and abuse. It's a shame. Ten years of patronage out the drain. It's funny that he wrote a review on here asking patrons to give the store another chance. After that display, I'm making it my mission to spread the word on how you shouldn't. The service was the worst I've ever experience in my life. Half the items I purchased are literally expired. Everything is insanely marked up ($10 for a 180g chocolate bar, $3.29 for a regular sized push pop that's not imported). You can also find most everything elsewhere. Bulk barn has a great selection of Jelly Belly's. Also - check your receipts before leaving.
