As a movie buff who thought I had frequented every theater possible in Columbus (both big and small), I am very embarrassed to say I am just now learning about this theater. This place is a wonderful hidden gem in Clintonville, and I only found out about it due to it being one of the only indoor theaters currently operating in the city due to the pandemic (thanks Covid!). I had a wonderful experience!!! The staff was very small but extremely friendly, professional and efficient. The bartender was working hard and multitasking by taking tickets, selling food orders and also making drinks all at the same time. She was awesome, polite and helped all of the guests very promptly. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay, brick house buffalo chicken pizza, and an ice cream sandwich (it was cheat day, ha!). The buffalo chicken pizza was impressive and was loaded with lots of chicken and blue cheese and was yummy. The ice cream sandwiches are locally outsourced from a place called Whit's, which was a nice surprise because this coincidentally happens to my family's fave ice cream place in Gahanna. Everything was also very inexpensive in comparison to overpriced concessions sold at most theaters, so I was extremely happy. The theater was cute, cozy, extremely clean, and very comfortable and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Just a few notes-- due to Covid you are required to purchase tickets online ahead of time. Also, I would buy early as seating is limited and they are operating below full capacity to abide by social distancing guidelines. Studio 35 has done an AMAZING job with their remodel. Rita and Eric, a 30s something husband and wife team, have poured their love and considerable talent into making Studio 35 a Columbus landmark. A fantastic new bar - in the round- greets you as you enter. The side walls are lined by friendly tables to imbibe or enjoy pizza with your friends. On the far right, where the old bar used to extend into the theater is a window, table AND speakers to let you enjoy your movie in the bar atmosphere. Word is, more tv screens around the bar are to come. The renovation updated all the seating and ADDED more seating/table combo areas in the back rows. The sound quality is much improved!! For those who loved the murals, and who didn't?, I've heard tell that the Ohio Historical Center is on the line to take them. For the WIN! PS: the beer tastings and movies are still the ultimate experience! Studio 35 is the best place to see a movie in Columbus. You pay for a ticket and enter the main area. There are plenty of tables and chairs, as well as a large bar. Movie ticket prices are reasonable (we paid $8 each) and you won't find better prices on beer at any other theatre in Columbus. They have a large selection of craft beer and an option to order food from the pizza place a few doors down. Some of the theatre seats have tables for a dine-in experience, and some are traditional movie seats. The theatre isn't big like you'll find at an AMC, but it does hold a lot of people and it's easy to find a good seat. This is a great alternative to the super crowded (and super overpriced) dine-in movie options in others areas in town. Just order some pizza from next door, grab a beer, and enjoy the movie! Once upon a time, this was a movie theater with a bar so you could get your drink on while watching a movie. Yes, you could watch the movie from the bar area. Now it's half bar and half movie theater. Before the movie, during the movie, and after the movie, the bar is usually pretty packed. There is good soundproofing and two sets of doors (sometimes one set is open) so while watching the movie you aren't disturbed by the bar patrons. It's easy to setup a tab so you can get drinks before and after the movie and only pay one bill. An order of popcorn with a scoop of m&m's is a treat. If you order pizza before the movie, try to show up around 20 - 30 minutes before the show so you can run out and pick up it from the bar during the trailers without missing the movie. This is a popular date night destination as we can get dinner and a movie (sometimes two!) at the same place. read more

I live within walking distance to Studio 35 and whether it's to see a movie or hang by the bar, this is hands down one of my favorite places in Columbus. Hands down the best place in town in every aspect. You walk up and it has the old school movie theater aesthetic like 1979 with the box office and marquee lights. You walk in and you're in this cozy bar with the sickest decorations, I'm talking old school just like the outside. And the bar, don't even get me started, best draft beer selection in town and maybe the state. I've never seen a place have 40 on tap, especially not a movie theater. Then the food, Fibonacci's is arguably the best pizza in town and you can order it to eat during a movie. At this point, if you ain't sold by the godly beer and pizza the culture of the place might get you. Monthly screenings of Rocky Horror with the live performance, Dudathons, etc. The people that run this place gotta be some of the coolest people in town. This may be one of my favorite nightlife spots in Columbus. And why wouldn't it be? It feels like a bar in front, has a very wide selection of craft beers on tap, and there is a movie theatre! It's definitely a movie theatre first- don't get me wrong, but this place could just be a cool bar that shows movies, but the theatre screen is legit. I have never seen an actual movie here. They show popular television shows on the big screen, which I appreciate. They also do special event midnight movies frequently and a beer tasting with a movie on certain Sundays as well. I'd like to check all of that out very soon also, but when I go here, I have a great time. It's a place I would take a out-of-town bar/movie theatre aficionado friend. I had been to Studio 35 a few times prior to the remodel and I thought it was a pretty cool place to see a movie (or Kevin Smith) and grab a beer. A little grungy and rundown, but lots of character. The pizza from Clintonville Pizza a couple of doors down is great--classic midohio thin crust pizza. Though I think the whole experience of beer-pizza-movie makes each part of the combo better. I'm not a huge beer drinker, but if I am having one, I'd like it to be interesting or at least not one of the usual suspects you can get anywhere. Thankfully, Studio 35 always has some interesting brews on tap. My wife loved this place in concept, too since we can do an entire date night with dinner and a movie in the time it takes to just see the movie. The one problem we always had with Studio 35 is the grungy and rundown part. When I was younger, I wouldn't have minded much, but now that I'm a (*sigh*) middle-aged dad used to disinfecting everything my family touches, I was a little leery of bringing my wife here on a night out (she was always a good sport, but I knew she'd rather be at Easton). But since the remodelling, nay the REBIRTH of Studio 35, this place is now our goto joint to see a movie. They've kept the character, banished the grunge and improved a Columbus institution. Everyone's heard of a dive bar. Has anyone heard of a dive theater? We have one right here in Columbus, and it feels like home. Studio 35 is a plesiosaur among sharks, both anachronistic and a welcome presence in an age of heartless megatheaters and $7 small popcorns. Most commercial venues have twenty-odd screens, glitzy decor and price gouging at every turn. Studio 35 has a single screen, a bar area, reasonable dining and matinee prices, crazy art on the theater walls and Homer Simpson running naked on a bathroom movie mural chasing a donut. And oh, it works. CBC draughts? Check. Studio 35 growlers? Check. Cheap popcorn & candy? Check and check. Pizza, salad and sub delivery? Check, check, can I get a mutha-fuggin' check. Want to get your drag on? Rocky Horror runs two nights a month, letting you dress up as Dr. Frank-N-Furter whenever you want to trade in your suit for something sweet and transsexual. Brews with your shews? Go for a beer tasting and some classic cinema. In the mood for a scare? Head out for a bit of camp and gore with Grindhouse Horrors. (Sometimes a lot of camp.) A GH event was my first exposure to the venue. The group celebrated their one year anniversary at the theater in February, showing "A Nightmare on Elm Street" for two nights to celebrate. (The usual first anniversary gift is paper, but as Grindhouse would know, knives cut paper.) It was a fun time in a welcoming atmosphere. It may look dated (your grandparents may have necked here when they were in high school), it may have a seat or two you're at risk of breaking if you're "big boned", but Studio 35 has an unmistakeable charm unlike any other theater in Columbus. Studio 35 is a great neighborhood theater and one of my favorite places to go in Columbus. There are so many beers available and the staff is always friendly and patient with a recommendation or sample. Studio 35 has been renovated within the last year and although there is a vintage essence, it is a clean theater and the seats are comfortable. Studio 35 outsources their food to Clintonville Pizza but its a great option to be able to eat dinner while watching a movie. More often than not, I order a small popcorn with M&Ms and it is the perfect combination of sweet and salty. I never would have experienced that magical combination if it wasn't for coming to Studio 35. read more

We came to Studio 35 on a rainy Saturday afternoon. We came around 2:15 to see a 3PM movie. I'm not sure how early before a movie they usually open, but we were the first ones that came in. After we got there though, the line never stopped until the movie started. It was a bit early and they didn't start serving food yet... but you could have soda, beer, or a cocktail.. there were a couple of themed drinks for the movie too! The bartender/staff was a really nice guy - he kept offering people little samples of beers before they made a final decision, even when there was a short line of people waiting. I felt so bad for him though because he was clearly understaffed during the rush before the movie. He was the only one working - ringing up tickets and making/pouring drinks. We each had a few beers and I nursed mine nicely through the movie. I thought the prices for the popcorn was good.. we don't usually get snacks when we go to movies but we did here! The small popcorn was $3.50, medium $5, and large $6. Even though we didn't have food, we sat in the back where there were small wooden tables. There was a lot of extra leg room there that was nice, and we could get up and use the restroom multiple times. I think this was ideal for us, because we weren't heavily invested in the movie and didn't mind leaving to get beers/use the restroom. Overall a super fun time for families, friends, and dates! I would give Studio 35 Cinema & Drafthouse 4 stars just for their beer selection alone. However, combining great beer with a cinema bumps my rating up to 5 stars. They have over 30 draft beers, many of which i've never heard of. This is an impressive feat, since I like to think I know my beers. The bartender was very friendly. He checked my ID (Asians look young) and saw that I was from New York. He immediately suggested to try something local from the Columbus Brewing Company. He asked if I liked hops and of course I do. He gave me a sample of CBC's Bodhi and it was delicious! The icing on the cake is that every Sunday, they show the Walking Dead on the big screen for free. It's a great way to wrap the weekend with good beer, friends and your favorite AMC zombie show. Good times! I'll be back for sure. read more

One of my favorite places in Columbus and one my favorite places to see a movie anywhere. The place is intimate with just one screen, but serves some tasty beer and takes pizza orders. The prices are reasonable for both entry and concessions which is both rare and valuable. There are nice bathrooms, a pleasant atmosphere and some lovely decor. The seats in the back of theater have tables which is great if you decide to order that pizza. This is a smart business. I personally don't care for football, but playing Buckeye football on the big screen is a good idea in a town like Columbus. They also host other events like Rocky Horror Picture Show and selling beer is a nice touch. I think lots of small struggling theaters across the county should take note of this place and how they function. I've got two words for you: FIBONACCI'S PIZZA. Is this part of the drafthouse or some kind of pop-up inside? I don't know, but have you TRIED this?? Unbelievably great pizza with those big bubbles of delicious crust and toppings that defy convention. We had the margherita (tomato sauce, mozzarella, parmesan, fresh basil), Flock Yeah (chicken, bacon, blue cheese crumbles, buffalo sauce, EVOO base, topped with green onion), Fig Magig (EVVO oil base, goat cheese, prosciutto, Calimyrna figs, arugula, fig glaze) and Ecto Pesto (pesto, house cheese, fire braised chicken, bacon, feta, diced tomato, parmesan). All were mouth-watering and make me want to return asap. This pizza is comparable to Harvest Kitchen in Clintonville, and that's a pretty significant compliment. read more

I simply adore Studio 35. The intimate feel of this theater is unmatched by any I've been to, aside from the tiny theater in my dad's hometown in Northern Michigan. The new renovations they made recently are fantastic as well. I have not eaten here (yet) so I'm sad to say I can't review this aspect. But, I will, and will surely update my review to reflect on that when it happens. I'm not a fan of the mega-theaters, though their sound and picture quality may be superior- this is simply not what matters to me. The atmosphere is where it's at. One screen, so you don't have to wait in huge lines for concessions...or beer! Beer, yesss. Delicious brews on tap, and the back few rows in the theater even have tables so you have somewhere to put your food/brews/etc. The new seats are great! Brand new, comfy, leather (which feels much more sanitary than upholstery). The bathrooms are very clean as well. And, though this may seem like an insignificant detail, kids can reach the sinks. They have a summer movie event for kids ($2 admission) and I took my whole preschool class for a field trip. It was wonderful! If you want a much more pleasant, comfortable, intimate movie-going experience, this is the place! read more

I first went to Studio 35 in the 60s. I love Studio 35 and I keep coming back, and the service people are great, but food gets worse and worse. The only last time that I had food this bad was the last time I was at Studio 35. Even the salads are poor, and I have no idea what they make the pizza crust with - but I do not recommend it. I have also gotten the subs recently - again, pre COVID I LOVED their food, but while the beer is great - as I said, while I love Studio 35 I write this review because I hope that they do something about their food. read more

Studio 35 is a winter staple for me, I love grabbing a lineage brew and sitting in the back of the theater. The only downside is the parking situation during peak hours, but it's worth it to enjoy a great movie theater. Just plan ahead if you are going during a popular time. I used to live across the street from Studio 35, and it was my local hangout. Studio 35 had a lot going for it before the remodel, and now...let's just say it's a must visit for out of towners. The best aspects: 40 beers on tap, served in glass glasses (except the 24 oz beers), Frost Top root beer on tap, unique and interesting decor (tons of posters to check out), cool and knowledgeable bartenders, tables in the theater for the food you can order from Pizza Primo, and tons of fun special events. Good aspects: Several booths to sit down at around the bar area, in a great neighborhood, TVs over the bar, bike racks for bike parking, M&Ms in popcorn. Bad aspects: Can be very crowded when movies let out, bathrooms are kinda small, parking (car) can be difficult to find, not close enough to my house anymore (Ok, Ok...that's my fault). My husband and I went with some friends last night to see Pineapple Express. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. We spoke with John (father of one of the owners) for a while who told us about the theater's history and the recent renovations. The bar is a great place to hangout and mingle before the movie. They have forty beers on tap, and I think they also have liquor. We didn't order any of the food, but I will post an update when we try some of that. Our tickets were only $5!! Maybe that is just the price for the 5pm time slot, but seriously you cannot beat that. Also, when you buy popcorn, you can MIX IN M&M's!! Yes, people, it's as delicious as it sounds! The theater is clean (no sticking to the seat/floors), and the ladies bathroom was spotless. I'm really excited that we found this place, and we will definitely be going back! read more

Studio 35 is one of the reasons Clintonville rocks so hard; it truly is a landmark of our neighborhood, and a super sweet place to catch a cheap flick and have some beers. Last night, we went to see Inglorious Basterds (again! - best. movie. ever.) and had an excellent time. We stopped in a bit early to see a friend who works there, and hung out on the couch in the lobby, drinkin' microbrews, while we waited for the rest of the film to finish from the 7pm showing (you cannot see Inglorious Basterds too many times!). The whole affect of the theatre is awesome - our friend was telling us that it's from the 1930s, and it just has this historical aura about it, reminding you that so many people from so many eras and so many walks of life have walked through that lobby and sat in that theatre. It's also very local feeling in that there really isn't a line to get your tickets, people just kind of cluster up and wait to be served. The beer selection is great (although they need s'more brown ales!), and it's nice to sit in the theatre with a pint glass and some popcorn (or, I guess you can order pizza!) - we sat in the back row, where there are tables to put your drinks and/or food on. The sound also seems to be much improved from the last time I was here, which is nice - so you get a complete movie experience for less money and with a nice, neighborhoody, old-timey, slightly intoxicated feel. :D Yay, go here! read more

Small and locally owned theaters are here to stay. After being devastated the decades before by multiplex maniacs, local small venues have reached an equilibrium serving local communities with eclectic mix of films including locally made efforts, shorts, artistic, off-the-wall as well as blockbuster feature. Added bonus: being a bar with great drafts! This classic Clintonville showhouse revels in them all. And why would they all go the way of the dodo bird? After all, a place like this is where our heroine pops out with her girl-meets-boy in every cliche ridden chick flix, walking down the tree shaded street, never out into a honking, parking lot sea a glowed by fugly Taco Bell. People like seeing cinema in a place that is itself cinematic. Studio 35 is certainly that, snugged in a group of buildings centered in a residential area just north of the university district. It is a great place for art loving locals and students alike. Having a gorgeous bar with an extensive craft beer selection doesn't hurt; where movie goers can have pored a impressive cider, IPA, stout, or lager from an ever changing menu, into a classy drafthouse glass, set it in an arm rest fitted for it, and binge on brew as well as film. It had been too long since I last set foot here. I first found it my initial year in town, when a roommate and I discovered ( it was novel for us; refugees from BFE) the interactive delight of Rocky Horror. Loving the independent and geeky cool the place seemed then, it became a sort of getaway on matinee Sunday's. Often with a spiral notebook and pen, I scribbled off-lined notes in the darkness, roots for reviews in the Lantern, slanted and cutting at the Hollywood hacks, an critical idiosyncrasy still held. Today it retains the geeky, historical, and deco coolness, though it has been refurbished it seems. The single room is spacey, has good sound, and nice picture.It is what you expect of an art deco influenced playhouse. Wall decked in wavy red velvet from top to bottom. The ads pre-movie are of local business which matches the community centrism of the place. The seating is a little crowded for a long legged person like me. My only compliant, and if you are long legged as well take note. Probably the only thing modern theaters have over it, with there loungey chairs. Check out their beer selection and movie schedule online. The parking is street, but to tell you the truth, it still better than driving the hour long bumper-car ride known as parking at a multiplex. In the fall they show tOSU football games live. That's on my must do list. They say to get there early for that because I guess Ohio State Football is a big deal in Columbus or something. read more

In the past couple months, I've been to Studio 35 a couple times with a friend. I had been there before the remodel and I felt it was unclean and dingy. I absolutely love Studio 35 now. We have sat at the bar both times and the bartenders were great! We didn't see a movie, we just went for happy hour and some grub. We ordered some pizza and appetizers, all was good. My first impression when I walked in the door of Studio 35 was "this place is so. freaking. cool." I'm a softie for old buildings, nostalgia, and quirky joints. Studio 35 fulfills all of the above requirements. The first thing you see when you walk in the door is a full bar with REAL BEER. I ended up with something or another from the Columbus Brewing Company (Pale Ale maybe?), and a 16oz glass was maybe $5? Not half bad for a huge glass. There's your standard popcorn and candy movie theatre fare, which I didn't partake in, but I scoped out the prices and they were way more reasonable than what your standard theatre charges. You can also order pizza from the place down the street, and they'll deliver it to you right in the theatre. We ended up getting a Hawaiian pizza, which was pretty decent and got to us within 30 minutes. Pizza and good beer at a movie place? Score. The theatre itself was behind the bar, through a set of old wood and glass doors. There's only one screen, and when you walk in you feel like this is the kind of theatre your parents/granparents might have gone. It's smaller than your average megatheatre, with wooden seats, cloth thrown up on the walls, and a sloping floor instead of stadium seating. It might be slightly less comfortable than a newer theatre in terms of seating, but I thought it was cozy and had loads of personality to make up for it. We ended up seeing The King's Speech. The quality of the picture and the screen were both fine. I didn't notice any issues with the sound, so maybe they took care of that. No color/clarity issues with the screen either. The place wasn't crowded at all, although that might have been because it was a week day night. The real winner for me was that not only was this place incredibly cool, but it wasn't expensive at all. Student tickets were like $5.50, the snacks and drinks were all relatively inexpensive. All in all, Studio 35 is probably one of my favorite places in the Columbus area. I will definitely be back. Studio 35 is an old (1940's maybe?) single-screen theatre showing recent releases. They schedule a double feature every night, (actually, sometimes a triple) keeping the same set of movies for several weeks at a time. You pay one price for admission, regardless of when you show up or how long you stay. So for example you can time your arrival to the action-filled climax of a summer blockbuster, then grab a beer and settle down to something you really want to watch. Yes they have beer. Good, reasonably-priced beer, including a locally produced Studio 35 ale. Food, too. Check it out. P.S. Like the resident non-Newtonian fluid of Clintonville, the properties of Studio 35 refuse to conform to your expectations. Is it a movie theatre? yes. Is it a bar? yes. Is it a restaurant? ...Sure. They have food. Is it an arcade? ...Yeah, okay. They have games. Whatever you are thinking it is, it is so much more. This place is a Columbus treasure. We live within walking distance and there is no better entertainment than to stroll up to Studio 35 on a warm summer evening, enjoy a drink or four at the bar, have popcorn with M&Ms in it, and then take in a movie in a theatre that is of another era. Even when they are not playing anything I am interested in, it's still a great neighborhood bar. It's cozy without being cramped. There is nothing better than Studio 35 and their free events, such as Sharknado 2, which was horrible, but amazing at the same time. I love Studio 35 even more after the remodel and miss the days when I lived in the house directly across the street. They have a bar, which is a huge plus, and you have the ability to sit in a seat with a table in front of it in the theater, and order something from pizza primo, which makes this a pretty easy dinner and a movie kind of night. There is only one screen, so this absolutely isn't AMC, but if that's what you're looking for, you probably wouldn't come anyway. read more

If I ever move out of Columbus, Studio 35 will be the local business I'll miss most. I've been seeing movies there as long as I've been in the area, and I've always loved its gritty charm and its drink selection. It became less gritty after the recent renovation. My first time in after it reopened, I felt a pang of nostalgia for the old, cramped lobby with its shabby booths and arcade games, but I was used to the new, sleek look very quickly. It's still someplace where you can hang out before, after, and even during the film. A couple of the older employees still remember me and make me feel welcome whenever I come in. I do miss the murals. But the special events are still going on. Although I like the novelty of being able to order pizza and other food to your seat inside, I seldom take advantage of it. I frequently, however, take advantage of the fact that there's always hard cider available. I'm glad Columbus has a theater like this one. It's one of a kind in so many ways. read more
