This beautiful, well-maintained gym is home to many talented and passionate Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) practitioners and hosts a team of great coaches and mentors to continue improving your skills and techniques and also growing your passion for the sport. Although the name nor location stands out much at a glance as a gym for BJJ, it is well known among locals and visitors of their excellence and commitment to expanding the roots of the sport in this area. It's been heard near and far about their ability to bring in top practitioners for seminars and guest visits. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to come in for a couple sessions taught by Eric and his team. With multiple sessions a day, multiple days a week, it was flexible to find a time that worked for me and with people of all levels, it was a great opportunity to learn from some talented folks. They do host gi and no gi sessions so if one's more your cup of tea, consider checking their schedule to determine the best days and times to attend. With a private parking lot, it makes it also convenient to come in at any of their sessions and be able to hop in and out without worrying about finding parking or getting stuck in traffic while trying to navigate the constantly construction-ridden streets of Solana Beach. The first impression walking into Studio 540 was the immaculate training area which included the main area of mats but also the side areas, staging area, and bathroom/showers. Eric and everyone who came in were extremely welcoming and made the session a great learning environment. The training was balanced with warmups, drills, and open rounds and had a good pace to keep bodies warm and flowing. I only wished I had more time to come by more often! Overall, Studio 540 is an exceptional gym for those looking to get into the sport of BJJ as well as for those who are a bit more advanced and looking to level up your game. Their facilities are extremely clean (they expect team members to wipe and sanitize the mats after each session) and well-maintained. Their footprint in the community has quite a reach and brings in folks from afar to come train so you may have the opportunity to meet a great group of people. I am so amazed at how young some of the students are how the instructors have calm voices yet command attention. Highly recommend this place. The level of instruction is world-class and the culture/environment is very chill. They got something for everyone here. If you want to turn it up a bit and go hard there will be someone happy to accommodate and if you feel like just flowing around and going light you can do that too. Visiting from out of town, my buddy took me there did a back to back judo and jujitsu class was really fun. The atmosphere is spa jitsu, Where are the price is high but you get a locker in a towel and they have clean bedding area to clean up before you leave. If I lived in the area I would strongly consider becoming a member. Otherwise as part of my San Diego tour it was very fun to stop there and do some classes. I've been training here for several years. Great people. Great classes. Great instructors. I've been challenged every single class. I get a workout, and I learn something. If you want to up your grappling game, this is a great place to train. I just started Muay Thai, so there's that here too. I especially dig the early morning classes and open mat on Saturday afternoons. I've never had a bad class, even once. Also, if you're curious about judo, there are 3 great classes for that too. We brought 4 kids to compete in the Championship this year. We came to Studio 540 last year and this year. The experience at Studio 540 was, and still is, incredible. The kids just learned, and trained with, global multiple time World Champion Tarsis Humphries. Walking in and seeing Tarsis was exciting! Meeting Tarsis in person was an honor. What a wonderful human being! What a talented artist! His Jiu Jitsu is a beautiful art! The 2 kids that came to Studio 540 last year talked about their magical rolls, and learning experience, at Studio 540 all year. Every day in class they told the other students about how incredible the people are and how mind blowing the Jiu Jitsu is. All year 4 new kids anticipated, and had dreams about, coming to Studio 540. We brought 2 kids last year and 4 kids this year. Watching the kids roll on a mat full of the best Jiu Jitsu artists on earth almost brought me to tears. Everyone was so kind to our kids. I'm in SD for vacation and wanted to get some training in. I was a bit concerned over bjj politics but when I called here they were super friendly and inviting. I told them where I was from and where I trained and that the gi I brought had my team patch on it. They said no worries, just come on down and have a good time.
