I was scheduled for a blowout this Saturday with Nick and after seeing the disaster state of my hair color he made time for a partial balayage that came out fabulous! He was attentive, kind and when I was in a huge pinch he was reliable. He did such a wonderful job with the color I'm getting a ton of compliments. I usually pull more of a yellow tone and he was able to pull a cooler blonde effortlessly. This was my first time at this salon and it was very clean. Downgrading my review after my latest experience. Between having a baby and quarantine I have been without a haircut or color for nearly 4 months. After reopening was finally announced, I booked as soon as possible and completed the questionnaire as instructed. I was excited to finally get my hair done and regain some sense of normalcy and self-esteem after the roller coaster of the past few months. I'd even chatted with my stylist briefly, who was also excited to return to work and catch up with one another after so long. Why then did management call me on a Wednesday to cancel a Sunday appointment? Judy, an owner, explained to me that my stylist, who had been at this location for 15 years (which is saying something in an industry that seems to benefit from ample competition) was suddenly "no longer with us." This seemed very peculiar to me, since my stylist seemed genuine in her eagerness to return to Studio 921 and her clients. In their defense Judy offered me a spot with another stylist, however, it seemed wrong to deny my regular stylist much needed income and gratuity during an unprecedented time for small businesses, especially since I suspected that it was not her choice to end the relationship, based on the suddenness of the cancellation and my stylist's seeming readiness and willingness to return to work. Surely, management should have been able to arrange for longtime clients and backlogged services to be rendered before ending the relationship. I understand if unprofessional or dangerous behavior necessitates swift severing of affiliations, but I highly highly doubt my stylist would have done anything of the sort. I could be wrong, but it seems unlikely. I am on the schedule with another stylist but resent the awkward position I've now been put in as a client. And it will be another month until I can get a cut and color. Very questionable. --- I'm still getting cuts and color here and I'm still very happy with Rachael P's work. I always look forward to visiting 921. The front desk is still too tall to see behind when you come in, but I'm happy to report that it's been much easier to book appointments than it was in the past. When I look around the salon, things are quite clean and the other stylists seem to be doing high quality work as well. I don't see other clients leaving unhappy or quibbling with the front desk, from what I can tell. I really appreciated the 15% off I received after checking in via Yelp. I'm still working on the former, but a year and a half later I finally found my salon in Baltimore. Once I got an appointment with Kasee I knew she would be my girl. She was super easy to talk to and was very helpful with suggestions to fulfill my need for (small) change in my hair style. A few hours and a balayage treatment later, I am a satisfied customer. The salon is pretty big and I love the urban warehouse look it has to it. It's a one stop shop for all beauty needs: hair, nails, waxing, you name it. I had my second session of highlights and I feel obliged to say, I am pretty disappointed (I waited a little over a week to write this review to see if my thoughts would change on my session...it did not). With the first session, I was excited because I felt everything went well. I did notice that there was a nice chunk of my natural hair (I have jet black hair) that was left alone, but I figured that with the second session it would be taken care of. For my first session, I paid $163 excluding tip. Note: I did not pay extra for a blow out because I have pretty thick hair and after sitting in a chair for a few hours, I just wanted to go home. I also asked to have my roots addressed (I have quite a few grey hairs) and was told that the highlights would cover them. After my hair dried, I noticed that the grays were still there. I shrugged it off and decided to wait until my next session to ask to have these bad boys covered again. Here's how my 5-star-review went down to 2 stars: With the second session, I was thrilled to be working with the same stylist. Everything seemed to be going well and when she dried out the first bit of hair framing my face, I was like "YES!" Again, I did not have my hair completely blown out because of how thick it is and I was exhausted, so I did not see everything until I went home. What bothered me (and still bothers me) is how much this session ended up costing: $318 excluding tip. When I went home and double checked the receipt from the first session, I sent an email to the salon kindly asking the cause of the huge jump in price. Their response: my stylist added additional highlights to the bottoms of my hair and added a treatment (I assume Olaplex). However, I fail to see how this would cause an increase of $155. I waited for my hair to dry, though, and noticed that my grey hairs were still there and that chunk of natural hair was still left untouched. If all of my hair looked like the first bit of hair framing my face, I wouldn't have been so upset. I also kind of feel like I was taken advantage of because I disclosed that this would be the last appointment before I relocated. Because it has been past 7 days, I unfortunately can't have this corrected before I leave. TL;DR Get a quote before you allow your stylist touch your hair. You might go from $163 to $318 for full highlights that aren't actually "full" highlights. :( read more

I am not a person who goes and gets their nails done. I work with my hands and they're constantly in water and getting roughed up so I don't see the point. But my birthday is coming up and I wanted to treat myself. My boyfriend almost took me to a place that had horrible yelp reviews so I looked for a different salon because I was apprehensive. I saw this place was close to the questionable one so I called to see if they could squeeze me in. The front desk staff were really friendly and said they'd be able to fit me in in a couple of minutes. The whole salon is clean and everyone there was super nice and friendly. But the real star of the show was Charlene. As I said I don't like getting my nails done. I've had a lot of bad experiences and it makes me leery. She was amazing. She was patient with my color selection and didn't hurt me even once. My nails look fabulous and she told me how to keep them up. I'll be going back to her again and again. I love this salon, and I'm only sad I didn't discover it sooner. It's truly a gem, and the stylists are absolute rock stars. I've gotten a haircut and balayage done here, and I've been thrilled with my terrific tresses each and every time. Rachel W. helped bring my hair back to life with some great layers and tips and tricks re: keeping my hair voluminous, shiny, and healthy (argan oil, a miracle worker!). The shampoo and conditioner they use smell so good, and it's such a nice little treat (you may have to tip the shampoo lady separately if your stylist isn't the one washing your locks) to be tucked away in the back and relax for a few minutes. Nicole C. brought some amazing depth and dimension to my hair with the most beautiful, natural-looking caramel balayage. It's like she read my mind! I showed her literally like one or two photos, and said I wanted an easy-to-maintain look that would help me survive being in 3 weddings and attending 2 more this year... and she knocked it out of the park! I got an amazing facial with Kara and couldn't be more pleased. The session started promptly, if not a little sooner since I was early. We started with a consultation with Kara asking me about my home skin care routine and informing me of the treatment process she would do. She did extractions and the microdermabrasion and gave me a charcoal mask; while the mask dried I got the most amazing massage!!! I usually cannot relax during massages but Kara put me completely at ease. Kara is clearly passionate about what she does and was very helpful in addressing my concerns and providing me information on skin care maintenance. Went here today as a 22 year old who has never added any color/highlight/etc (a "virgin" as my hairstylist called it) and willing to experiment and try something new. Came in with a couple Pinterest pics of balayage hairstyles I liked but knowing next to nothing about the process or varying results. Jade took the time to inform me of my options, offer advice and encourage. She did a fabulous job making a tired social worker feel beautiful and refreshed. When she blew out my new "do" we were a bit hesitant with how my bangs turned out and she was the first to say she wouldn't take "okay" and fixed them instantly- love them now and they blend with the rest of the hairstyle. I I used to go to Studio 921 frequently a year ago, as a friend worked at the spa. Let me tell you a lot has changed; not in a good way over the past year. I had my hair colored: one color easy enough---right? Wrong--- the color bleed all over my pillow case, when I called to speak to the manager, Judy she never returned my call. I tried again a few days later to reach her, and again, she simply ignored my message. After spending 128.00 for my hair, shampoo, and a wax, I would think I would warrant a return call. However, Kara the waxer is good, if you must go. The salon doesn't seem really focused on customer service anymore and has a attitude when they do make a mistake....aka..the color bleeding the receptionist acted like no biggie. When you wake up and have dye on your pillow cases, it is very annoying. If you want a half-ass experience that is over priced at best then go to Studio 921. I am a new client of Salon 921 who learned about them via groupon (http://www.groupon.com/r/uu1803785). When I called to make the appointment they told me you can't use groupons on the weekends and the women (sounded like an older woman who didn't seem to be there when I actually came in) was super rude. She had 2 appointments open that I could pick from- both during the day while I was at work. I really was apprehensive thinking they would be rude to me because I was using a groupon, that is how poorly she treated me on the phone. I also had to leave a credit card number and would be charged if I didn't cancel 24 hours in advance. I received no appointment reminder. Once I got there the girl at the front desk was VERY nice. The girl (Emily) who did my nails was very nice and friendly. I got the OPI no chip manicure and she explained it to me very much in detail and it looks great. I'd never pay $60 for this manicure even though it is supposed to last 2-3 weeks without chipping. There are other area salons that are more competitively priced in the area and I suggest checking them out. However, if you are going here I would see Emily again she was very good at what she does and is a nail polish junkie so there was plenty to talk about. Emily told me they sold 400+ groupons and over 1/4th of them had already been used and it was bringing a lot of new clients in, which is the point. I guess it just really rubbed me the wrong way when I called and the tone of voice of the person who answered did a total 180 when I mentioned the groupon. Don't offer them if you don't want people to use them. They gave me a 15% off my next service coupon, but I'm scared to call and make an appointment with a *gasp* coupon! Overall- the actual service that I received from Emily and the OPI nail product I give excellent reviews. The other stuff, well I probably will go somewhere else for my spa needs. read more

We were in Baltimore just for the weekend and decided to get massages while here. We called a few days in advance and we were able to get a couples massage. I hadn't been to a salon and day spa before so I had some concerns. Those concerns immediately left when we checked in. When you check in at the front desk for the spa they take you through a door to a completely separate area from the salon. You then go into a nice waiting area to fill out some paperwork before your therapist comes in to meet with you and take you to your room. My masseuse was Annie. I HIGHLY recommend her. We had mentioned on the phone that we were looking for something in between a Swedish and deep tissue. She was perfect! Just the right amount of pressure in all the right spots. We live a couple of hours away but we will definitely be back. Also, don't forget to check out The Wine Market there too. It's the perfect place for an elegant but casual dinner. Obviously, it all depends on who you are seeing at a salon. For a while I had my hair cut and sometimes colored by Joe. On our first appointment, Joe was great. He sat me down, looked at my hair, checked everything out, and told me what he thought would be great on me. I was very happy with my first few cuts but became bored after a year. I kept getting the same exact haircut over and over- it was never changed at all. I'm one of those people who trusts my stylist- I usually give them a vague idea of what I want ("not too short, something different") so I stopped having Joe cut my hair just because I needed something different. I only go to 921 for waxing and massages. I've been very happy with both of these and usually just ask for any appointment- I don't have a specific massage therapist that I see- and have no complaints. read more

I was gifted a mani/pedi at Studio 921 for my birthday, and the experience did not disappoint. The salon itself is gorgeous; it seemed to be adequately staffed, and all the employees seemed friendly and professional. As far as the treatment itself, it was pricey, but satisfying. I liked the set up of the nail care area, and the spa chairs were super comfortable. There was a rainbow of what seemed like a hundred OPI nail colors to select from! When you are paying good money, it's always nice to have high quality products being used. The mani was pretty basic, although they did give a decent hand massage. My favorite part was the pedi! The whirlpool jets were extremely relaxing, and the leg/foot massage was lengthier than I'm used to at other places. One thing I will recommend is to inquire about booking your services with an apprentice. You get 15% off the listed price, which makes the service a little more affordable. My normally $70(gasp!) spa service ended up being only $55. I had Zaneika as my technician and she was absolutely fabulous. Overall, I would return to Studio 921 as a splurge, but I don't know if I could afford to go there regularly. read more
