okay, I've really debated making this review for a few weeks now. Ive been to Fringe a few times, I really like the salon itself. I enjoy the banter between the employees, the environment is really cute and welcoming, no one seems arrogant, but pretty laid back, however, im a fairly shy and anxious person, my stylist is always very chatty which is great because it helps relax me a bit, my stylist is always very sweet, and I truly believe they are a great stylist, just maybe not the stylist for me. Each time I have gone, my hair cut had been completely different than what was requested. I prefer an angled bob, but decided to try something different and go shorter due to some serious breakage and damage to my hair. But what I got vs what I requested and showed are to VASTLY different things, to put it mildly, I have a men's haircut, which is TOTALLY different from what I asked for and the pictures I submitted prior to my appointment and the consultation I had prior to my hair being cut. I paid, and tipped and walked out. this is possibly one of the worst haircuts I have ever had. my stylist compared it to a pixie cut, however, that is very clearly NOT what they gave me, and not even what I asked for / or showed them. I would suggest that if youre planning to go to this salon, be VERY VOCAL about what you want. maybe i should have spoken up, but I didn't realize how awful it was until my hair was dried. My hair is starting to grow out now, but it will be several months before I achieve the style I originally requested. I'm horribly embarrassed. It sucks, because I do really like the salon itself, but after this, I wont be coming back. read more

The salon was exactly what I was looking for. It was down to earth, unpretentious, community centered and a really great place to get a haircut and style. My stylist was Jessica. I want to preface this review by saying that I've been going to Fringe for the better part of two years and have admired the work I've had done by multiple stylists. The front desk staff has been sweet and appointments are usually a great time! So if you're a new customer and/or a QTPOC like me trying to get a sense of what the vibe at Fringe is like, book with the folks who consistently get good reviews. They've earned all of their stars, and the whole salon does not deserve a tank in it's rating despite what the rest of this review will say about my experience with Laura S. _________________________________________________ Usually I book haircuts, but since I'm growing it out now, I booked a bang trim. I'd never been Laura's client prior to this booking. After you book online, Fringe sends an appointment form that asks your name, pronouns, even a drink preference. I filled it out and uploaded a picture of what I was looking for: curtain bangs that part in the middle to frame my face and blend into the rest of my haircut. I arrived early to my appointment, but I was shown to the stylist's chair immediately. I don't think that appointment form I filled out was looked at prior to my arrival because she said my name wrong and then asked me to pull up a picture of what I wanted. I wasn't even offered a drink. (Mind you, it was close to 100 degrees out and I had walked there, but whatever.) A few seconds of awkward small talk later, Laura starts cutting my bangs while carrying on a conversation with an employee. Before I knew it, my bangs were uneven. I asked her to try and fix this while I was still in her chair. When she showed me the mirror again, I decided not to let her touch my hair anymore since she seemed to think that I looked fine. I took the pic I attached to this review a few minutes after my appointment. Honestly, I'm embarrassed that I paid to look like I gave myself manic bangs with nail clippers at 3 AM. To make matters worse, this is what I'll be looking like when I meet my partner's family for the first time this weekend. Wish me and my bobby pins luck. There's nothing anyone can do for me or my hair at this point, I only want to leave this review about this experience because it was extremely unusual and disappointing. Save your money, effort, time, and tears -- when something goes wrong, they will blame YOU. There is a basic level of decency and respect that the manager, Laura, fails to understand. I was so excited to dye my hair after a year and chose to trust Fringe and Shannon, who I booked as my stylist. I booked a 2.5 maintenance session since my highlights were a little grown out. I showed her a picture of how my hair used to look a year ago when I first got it done since I just wanted to maintain how it looked. She said she could CERTAINLY do it, and so I trusted her. After she was done, my highlights were a very red and brassy tone, whereas the picture I showed her was a clear blondish toned highlights. I was visibly upset and she offered to retone it and promised it would get to a blondish color. The second time it also didn't. Additionally, the back of my head had no highlights and they weren't blended AT ALL in some places. I called my mom crying and I looked like a clown leaving the salon. I told them how upset I was. Here's where it goes wrong. Laura, the manager, is one of the rudest people I have ever interacted with. It was disgustingly clear that everything to her was about the money, and though I had tears in my eyes from the mess that my hair was (it was essentially bright red instead of subtle blondish highlights) she said in the snarkiest tone "You can pay now." That's great, treat an already visibly upset customer with a cold harsh tone. The next day I went to a very reputable salon for a consultation to fix my hair, Smoke+Mirror, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO GO HERE! They are great. She told me to ask for a refund since the picture I showed and what I got was not at all the same-- they didn't lift the highlights enough (since Shannon only let it sit for about 10 minutes) and no amount of toner could fix it, I would essentially need to rebleach my entire head of hair and redo everything Shannon did. When I asked Fringe kindly if they would consider a refund, Laura blamed me and said I should have booked a longer session since there was no way they could have done it within the time frame. Like please, I am the CUSTOMER. I am in NO WAY a professional. Shannon should have told me it was impossible to do what I wanted in the time frame and made me rebook another session. That is professionalism. Laura kept talking over me and didn't let me get a single word out. Every time I tried to speak, she made everything about the money: "You paid for this. You wanted this. We are not refunding." In the RUDEST, DISGUSTING, snarkiest tone I have ever heard. It is hard to believe someone who is supposed to be so mature speaking to me, a 19-year old, in such a way. It was a horrible, horrible, experience for me to be bullied into even suggesting the prospect of a refund because my hair was so terribly awful and not at all how I wanted it to be. I showed many, MANY friends and peers and everyone agreed it looked awful and not what I asked for. I posted the pictures on multiple websites and my social media in hopes of spreading to SAVE YOUR HAIR and NOT GO TO FRINGE. Take my money; there is a basic decency of human respect that I truly hope Laura learns. read more

I came into fringe for a rainbow balayage. I was going for "subtle rainbow." You know, professional rainbow hair, as one does. I saw Danielle, and we talked for a while about what I was looking for. I was a bit of a nervous and unknowledgeable customer...I haven't had my hair dyed in 20 years and had NO idea how to actually accomplish the look I wanted. Danielle explained the process and very patiently answered my many questions as we went along. Four hours later, I ended up with a beautiful head of hair! I'll definitely be back for some more fun! If I could give zero stars, I would. I booked an appointment there for a cut and flat iron service for my first hair style/cut since growing my hair back after chemo. I was booked and excited for the upgrade. I mentioned when booking that my hair was fairly short and I wanted to keep the cut minimal because it's my new growth after having lost it to chemo. I arrived on time and the stylist, Marisol took me to her chair and began to cut. She asked another stylist what would be best for my hair so I could tell she wasn't use to working with hair like mine....curly hair I guess you could call it? Nonetheless, I appreciated that she wanted to get it right. The real problem started while I was under the dryer. She mentioned that she had a scheduling mishap and said that I might have to wait around for a little bit because her next appointment was coming at 11:30. This was at around 11ish. I said ok, not big deal, things happen. Once I was dry, she took me back to her chair and said she was worried because her next appointment (I don't think they'd even arrived yet) was a color job and she wanted to know if she could just give me a wash and go for the day. She said it was taking longer than anticipated. I don't know what that meant as she hadn't had to do anything extravagant or out of the ordinary with my hair. If anything, because I wanted to keep most of the length, she basically did a trim of the back before washing. So my guess is, she wasn't expecting my hair...texture? Which is not thick, it's just curly. Professionally, I can't understand why she wanted to inconvenience me, instead of making her other client who hadn't even arrived yet, wait an extra 10-15min to start? Or why not see if another stylist could do my flat iron? Why was the person getting the color so much more important than me? Easier hair to do? More money she would be making? I don't know. I thought the way she handled it was both unprofessional and unacceptable. I literally left in tears as I had been planning this cut since my hair started to grow back! I booked it on this specific day as it was the anniversary of my mastectomy and being cancer free. Treating myself. I was so upset. I left with sad clown hair, something I could have done myself. I'm disgusted with my experience, especially since there was no compassion for my situation. No, this is not a multicultural salon.....or apparently not for all stylists. **It should be noted that the owner's response to this review is apart of the problem and you should take note when choosing to book with this salon. I have my booking reservation that states that I booked both a cut AND flat iron service so I requested the allotted time that it would take to do my hair. It should also be noted that I got to blow dry bars, salons, etc. all the time that flat iron my hair with no issues. Not every black woman needs a relaxer and it's ignorant for you to say that. I would hope a multicultural salon would know that. It's based on hair texture and I've never in my 32 years of life needed one for my curls. Had the manager done her job as anyone who cared about someone with an experience like mine, and reached out to me even once (she has not to this day) she would know that I booked more than enough time to get my hair done. I had such a great experience at Fringe! Laura listened carefully to what I wanted, then cut my curly hair dry to get the right shape and length, then washed it and explained each step and product to get my curls looking their best. I really appreciated how she took the time to explain things to me and recommend products and tools! My curls came out looking amazing!! I will definitely be back for my next cut. Don't go here -- when something goes wrong, they blame YOU, the customer. I was in need of retouching my roots and specifically told the hair salon that it would be a double process when I booked my appointment at 3:30pm. First of all, I don't think they know much about Asian hair. When I showed up, my hairdresser Erin kept suggesting a process that I wasn't sure about, and took my meticulousness as a personal attack on HIM. First, he loudly and passive-aggressively talked to another staff about me as if I wasn't in the room, misgendering me at the same time. Apparently he only had 3 hours, which was not enough time. I realized this problem and asked if I could come another day, and then was accused by him that me arriving 15min late was the reason why this could not be done. He kept handling my hair very roughly too as if to get back at me. I was very unimpressed at this point. He then accused me of having an "attitude" and made him "irritable," when I had been nothing but civil to him. When I finally refused to take his sh1t, he escalated this unfortunate situation for both of us into a huge shouting match for the whole salon to see. I wanted no part in it, so I tried to leave and get my deposit back. He kept taking his frustrations out on and antagonizing me while I was trying to walk out. I am absolutely stunned by the display of immaturity, hostility, and audacity from this guy. I still recall his fingers aggressively pillaging through my hair and it f**king disgusts me. Will not be coming back no doubt. Do not recommend going here if you're not a white person. Better actually give me back my deposit! read more

You're unlikely to get the same stylist more than once because the owner, who is more invested in making sure that she's the center of attention in all things on social media and painting herself as being 'f*cking cancelled,' is so divisive that stylists are in and out like a revolving door. The vibe in this place is hostile and there is no other way to put it. In an effort to look cool and be subversive at the same time, the owner has made this place incredibly uncomfortable. I've never felt so upset in my whole life. I spent $600 plus on extensions. Lauren and I connected instantly, at first she was so nice to me. We spend hours together and the result looked amazing. She completely trauma dumped on me and shared very intimate details about her life which was fine because I am going to school for social work. I thought we really bonded. Should have been a red flag right away. I even mentioned we should hang outside of the salon as I am very social and she was cool. We exchanged numbers. Once I got home, washed my hair and tried to style it, it went downhill. The sew ins just weren't placed properly. I contacted her and expressed how upset I was. I literally had to cut and style it somehow to be manageable. I asked her if she could fix it or try tape in. She told me to come in and I apologized for being depressed over my hair( I was hosting a weekend long event and it was pressure I didn't need.) What I didn't expect was when I came in again (wrong day which I apologized for and said I would come back tomorrow) she had done a complete 180. Totally rude and aggressive attitude towards me. She stated I was unprofessional and she wouldn't work with me. First of all, you tell me your significant traumatic life story and play into "being friends" but then call me unprofessional??? I basically gave her free therapy the first time meeting the girl! I wasn't aware texting her at outside of work hours would bother her! I thought we were chill. I also mentioned I felt hideous, which I did because of how I attempted to style it! The sew ins were literally hanging by a thread and it was noticeable. I never insulted her personally saying her work was bad. I even boosted about how great it was on my social! I only wanted her to fix it and she refused. I didn't want $600 worth of hair removed shortly after I got it! I brought up the fact I thought we were cool because of the "trauma dumping" and she was absolutely catty, saying "mhmmm" without even acknowledging her part of boundary crossing. I was so upset by her attempting to just remove it after she said it wasn't even that bad and could be fixed that I left. On my way out she was having a conversation with the shop owner and just laughing. I knew absolutely the owner would be no help to me. I felt the uncomfortable tension right away. If you're a girl, you absolutely know when someone is talking about you. Absolutely unprofessionally handled and I felt like I was in a mean girls salon. I'm not even shocked the owner continues to talk about "being cancelled" on her own social media. I can see why now. Oh and because I'm sure they will bring it up. I did tell them to F off because they both deserved it, I felt belittled when all I wanted was my hair fixed by someone who didn't properly put it in, in the first place!!! There is no reason it should have been popping out after 1 wash! (How could I easily remove a whole section by myself if it wasn't poorly put in???) I went to cosmetology school, I'm not stupid in regards to how to brush hair. The other negative reviews are correct, the owner instills narcissistic traits and lack of accountability in her employees. Besides that I got my permanent bracelet replaced due to it turning brass, I even mentioned they needed to get rid of the chain which they didn't. They kept selling and I overheard the front desk saying they bought it off Amazon!!! $55 for a bracelet with crap material! Even my new one is now turning color even though everyone advertised it wouldn't. This salon preaches "being woke" but then makes you feel absolutely horrible when you point out what they have done wrong. I completely understand the other bad reviews now. Would not recommend in the slightest. Ps. The business owner will talk specifically about past employees while customers are there and laugh at their expense!!! If you worked at Fringe and are a singer, heads up they were cracking jokes about you and even playing your music while I was there! How horrible and catty of the owner to downgrade anyone, especially in front of customers. I am new to the area and Fringe was recommended by a friend for a curly haircut. I saw Lauren, who was attentive, friendly, and skilled. She understood what I needed for my hair and made me feel comfortable in a new salon. Fringe is definitely a vibe - very loud, friendly staff that make you feel like you've been coming for years; Paramore playing on the sound system; Walls and mirrors covered with art and pieces of flare - but this is completely my style. Easily the worst experience I've had at a salon yet. I booked a long/dense cut (1 hr, 15 min) and went in with pretty straight forward asks - I have thick, curly hair, and wanted about six inches off the bottom, weight taken out because my hair is heavy and I wanted the curl and shape to come back, and sweeping bangs to roughly the cheek bone. The stylist cut off *TWELVE* inches - I went in with hair below my waist (it's been a pandemic) and now my hair falls just about to the collar bone. I don't have words for how violating it is for someone to just cut off a foot of hair without discussing it. She also didn't know how to cut curls and the layers are all long and within a few inches of each other, and there's no shape beyond that. It's the exact same bell-shape result that anyone with curly has who goes to someone who has only cut straight hair ends up with. And instead of styling, drying and checking on the result she put some product in, barely touched it with a blow dryer and said she would leave it wet at exactly 59 minutes. No ask of "are you going somewhere where you need it dried/styled from here?" Just that she was going to leave it wet and I would get used to it. I couldn't even see how poorly cut and short it was until I got home and it had fully dried. I cried when I saw just what she had done. I emailed the owner a few days later to let them know, and the response wasn't even an "I'm sorry you had a bad experience" - simply a thank you, and that she would continue to train her staff how to cut curls. This culture of complete disregard for customers clearly comes from the top at this salon. read more

Hey ya'll! If you haven't been to this salon before YOU NEED TO! The entire staff is so sweet and the entire enviornment is so welcoming for everyone. The decorations are to die for! I researched and looked online to find a salon in Baltimore that will be able to color my hair (black thick hair). I went to Erin at Fringe, who wasn't intimidated or shocked to see my hair. Everyone was so nice at the salon, and listening to various types of music got me in a really good mood. Honestly, I was surprised how the salon caters to diverse individuals from all walks of life and I was happy to find it. I was dying my hair black too and Erin was able to life the color without bleach, with ease and gave me a wonderful haircut which I asked for. I can't wait to go back!! I think it's about time I left a review here. This was definitely a very intimidating process for me, getting extensions for the first time and all. I honestly wouldn't spend hours of my time anywhere else. The entire staff is so just incredibly friendly and lively and I love it! Now onto Daye... she does my extensions. I can't say enough about how kind and patient she is. I am very self conscious especially about my psoriasis/dermatitis and she doesn't even have a hint of judgement. She also takes her time making sure everything is placed correctly. There are no words to describe how beautiful she has made me feel. With that, my hair is extremely short and now I have beautiful long mermaid hair that basically you can not tell they are extensions. I wish I could give this place a million stars! read more

Lauren was amazing! I was referred from someone at my workplace, and I am so glad. I was nervous about bleaching my hair for the first time, but Lauren was very comforting and eased me into my first blonde balayage. Took me a hot second to get used to the new look, but I'm loving it more with each passing moment. I was originally going to do another session to go for a really ashy blonde, but I'm pretty happy with this new look so might just stop here, who knows. Very reasonable pricing, less expensive than the places I checked out in hampden but just as good! Also loved the atmosphere, was very laid back and I felt comfortable the whole time. read more

At the risk of never being able to book an appointment in Paulette's chair or Fringe I write this review. I started soft trying this soon with having them do my undercut. EVERY. SINGLE. STYLIST. (3 before Paulette) were welcoming and made me feel seen. The first time I sat in the chair Danielle did some hair truama psychotherapy and gave me an intro to how to feel comfortable with my own hair. She introduced me to the fringe culture which made me give them a second try. Lauren was my second booking and she gave me the most amazing undercut as well and really just made me feel even more comfortable. Odessa gave me a really cool undercut design and was overall professional and just warm. Which lead me to Paulette, I booked and undercut and then the following appointment she gave me a TOTAL CURLY MAKEOVER. You'll have to go to her insta for before and afters. She gave me great curly education. She tailored my hair color to my skin tone. She spent time and never made me feel guilty for the type of hair I have taking a long time. It was such an experience. She took her time, Aubrey Checked in on me, and the owner kept the fun convos going. Best of all, these stylist really love what they do. They vibe together and you don't have to worry about that icky feeling of salon drama brewing. They also practice inclusivity. By the way. It's affordable. I decided to go get my haircut and I wanted to do something a little bit different. So on a friend's recommendation, I tried out Fringe Baltimore - specifically Laura, one of the owners. I have to say I was nervous going in, knowing I was going to make a big change. But Laura spent a lot of time with me, walking through what we were going to do and really seemed to get what I was looking for! The people in the studio were super nice. Everyone was friendly, professional and seemed to know what they were doing. I had a cut, blonde highlights and several other colors layered in. Quite the project! Like the other customer my hair turned brassy and orange, told me to come back so she(Lauren) can tone it. Not worth the money. After my appt there, i found out that there are so many amazing hairstylist in Baltimore that are Professional, well mannered and trustworthy. Like if you say you wanted this color they will tell you if they can do it or not. The people who work here are so unprofessional and rowdy. read more
