Five minutes late probably not such a big deal in most cases, but I had been early so that I wouldn't be late when I entered the store. I smelled smoke on her so I knew she had gone to have a cigarette and that's why she was late opening. She asked me what I wanted done. I told her a trim only after the complementary shampoo and conditioner. I had to show her using my hair that I only wanted a quarter of an inch taken off. She did comply and it only took five minutes to trim my hair when it was time to pay, she charged me $40 $40 for five minutes to trim my hair you may say well she did shampoo and condition. This is true, but that's complementary. I am not a happy Customer.

I told her that she had done was not what I wanted. She said that she couldn't do it, then asked another stylist if she would do it. I was really nervous at that point because I had about two hours until my event. I waited about 40 mins, but it was worth it! Lalani have me a beautiful updo that lasted all evening. The first salon I found wanted over $600 for just a style and gloss. The gasp I gusped. I walked out of Salon deZen for literally hundreds less than that, with a fast and fabulous cut from Mariah customized to my needs (after a very helpful consultation), along with a demi-permanent teal gloss on my previously highlighted hair, AND a truly gorgeous laminated brow and Korean lash lift from Caroline. Mariah gave me a hair style that requires minimal maintenance, but has tons of movement and versatility and a color that made me smile so hard it hurt. Caroline somehow made my DISTANTLY related eyebrows look like sisters instead of estranged second cousins. She also gave me a bottle of oil with a spoolie for lash and brow aftercare that made such a difference in the hair texture after processing. Together, they've streamlined my beauty routine and gave me such a lift for Spring! My shampoo and blow out was done by a really sweet and capable person whose name regrettably escapes me, but who had me leaving looking flyyyyy. I only ever do simple cuts, nothing fancy. My haircut, done by Anderson (a level 3 stylist), is objectively good. The skill was there. But it's definitely shorter than I wanted it. Went in for a lob, came out with an asymmetrical bob...Honestly I was panicking while he was drying it because it was starting to look like Lord Farquaad from Shrek. I asked if he could style it like in the reference pictures I showed (simple waves, to reduce Farquaad-ness). He tried to do it with the brush/dryer, which obviously wasn't working, and didn't want to use a flatiron. So I just suffered through scalding heat on my scalp and hair pulling. I got told I don't have curly hair. I got told I don't have frizzy hair. I, in fact, have both of those. Some other minor things: 1. When I got home I had some hair that was noticeably longer than the rest, like it never got cut. So...I had to do it. Just a few strands, but normally stylists check for that when your hair is dry. 2. I almost never use heat on my hair, so I asked for recs and mentioned a specific brand doesn't work for me. He immediately said he loves that brand. I said yeah...but it doesn't work for me. Anything else? "Any salon brand." Cool. Not helpful. 3. Asked for something at the end to tame the pieces that were sticking out (again, I have frizzy hair). He looked...confused? Smoothing as a last step has been standard at every other place I've been to. There is nothing in the whole salon like that? Also, my introvert-self just wants to go somewhere where I don't have to be engaged in conversation the whole time. Anyway. Won't go back, my hunt continues.

So I began the search looking for a new hairstyle salon. Tried Alexandria, Springfield, even Fairfax. But none have provided what I need and certainly not justifiable of the price it commanded. So I tried HairSocial because I found it on Google and I liked I can book online. My hair appointment consists of the following: Wash, Blow Dry, and an undercut. Sometimes I'll get it flat-ironed depending on the occasion. So I booked 4 days in advance and when I arrived for my appointment I had to wait 20 mins after my actual time (for context it was a Sunday afternoon and no one else was in the shop except for one customer). When I was seated I was only given a haircut and nothing else despite asking for a hair wash and a blowout. Considering I had to put a downpayment online to book the appointment I naturally felt bamboozled. They offered to do what I originally asked but they said I had to wait an hour. I didn't have time as I had a family dinner I had to attend so I decided to go home and wash my own hair. Before I left, the front desk offered to refund me on my card and then said no and could only offer me a credit. The credit was tied to my account yet the credit isn't available when you book online you can only access the credit if you call to set up an appointment. Extremely disappointed but the stylist did a great job with my haircut. I'm just disappointed that I didn't get what I paid for at a reasonable time. Thankfully the management of the loc in Tysons Corner set things right and as a result despite this location being closer to me I go out of my way to visit the HairSocial in Tyson's Corner (that review will be coming shortly).
