If you're tired of bowling and arcade games, why not try axe/hatchet throwing? It's a fun, stress-relieving group activity that allows you to bond with other people. Stumpy's Hatchet House is the first indoor axe throwing venue in the US. We visited the Fairfield location on Route 46 West. It's located inside a large office complex that has plenty of parking. The entrance is in a little corner. It may look small at first, but looks are deceiving - it's a lot more spacious inside. Upon entering, we were greeted by a friendly staff member in the lobby/check-in area. The ambiance and decor is ON POINT! It's a very rustic atmosphere with a lumberjack theme - you'll feel like you're in a cozy cabin. Take some time to look at their wall decor and merchandise. Reservations (deposit required) are highly recommended, especially for larger groups on the weekends. They do accept walk-ins, but only if there's available room. We came on a Sunday at 5pm without any reservations and it was surprisingly empty. You can book for 1-3 hours. Smaller groups (4 and under) are booked for 1 hour, while larger groups (5 and over) are booked for 2 or 3 hours. Pricing is based on how many hours you book for and is charged per person. They also have a 20% discount for military and first responders. We paid $60 for an hour ($30 each for 2 of us) and signed our waivers. Stumpy's has 10 hatchet pits, each with two targets and plenty of room for the participants. There are tables, chairs, and comfy sofas. It's BYOB (beer + wine only) and you can even bring your own food. They have a "bar" with light snacks and soft drinks available for purchase. An axe throwing instructor gave us a tutorial on safety, how to throw the axe, and how to use the interactive game system. Unfortunately I forgot his name, but he was incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable, and made sure we were enjoying ourselves. He checked in on us and gave us some tips/suggestions to correct our form. You can simply hurl your axes at the target or you can choose from a variety of interactive hatchet throwing games on a touch screen system. In addition to axe throwing, they also have darts and giant games (like Jenga). It took awhile for me to get the hang of it.... but I finally activated the lumberjack in me and got around to hitting a couple of bullseyes!!! This was a fun experience overall. The atmosphere was lively, music was good, and the interactive games kept us entertained for an hour. I recommend trying axe throwing as a way to bond with people over some friendly competition or to release stress in a productive manner! Great experience on a Saturday night! Made a reservation and left a deposit months in advance. Arrived, signed the waiver and was given a basic lesson. We then got to axe throwing. It took a while for my friend and I to get the hang of it, but our husbands, who had been before, did well. After a good hour I finally became adept There was cornhole, jenga and shuffleboard. I went there as a group outing from work. After a few minute demo we started throwing axes about 10 feet to wood targets with a bulls eye on them. I spent another few minutes with the instructor to figure out how to make the axe stick in the wood. Your distance from the target is important for this to happen. The lanes have plenty of space in them, to be safe from the person throwing next to you. There were a few other games such as jinga, shuffle board and tick tac toe to play as well. It's completely bring you own food and beverage, so plan ahead for snacks or dinner. Plates of food will work just as well as finger food, as there are a few stools in the area. read more

I went here and I think on a Monday night it was pretty empty. I think it's a bit pricey, but the staff was really friendly and they had other activity so if you go with a large group, there's things that people can do while waiting to throw. I think it's probably good for big groups. read more

4/2021 I visited this hatchet house for a birthday party. Plenty of parking since this place is located in an office complex (tons of pot holes in the parking lot though). The staff was REALLY nice and helpful. They showed us how to throw and was always around when needed. The décor was top notch. I even loved the door handles which were hatchets. We brought our own food. There is a nice bar where you can order drinks. The only part I did NOT like is they schedule 2 hour parties with no gap (Even 15 minutes would have worked) so if my party was at 7 I sat in the small lobby with my food until 7 and promptly kicked out at 9. They stuffed 10 people in a 2 hatchet throwing space. The space we were given is way too small since we had to stand most of the 2 hours when we were not throwing. I'll definitely be back. read more

I love Stumpy's Hatchet House. I have been here twice and I totally recommend. I made a reservation online for 4 people. During the reservation I had to pay a $25 deposit which is the cost for 1 person for 1 hour. Then the other 3 people had to pay when they arrived the day off. Since I have been here before they already had my waiver so I didn't have to fill that out. If this is your first time, you have to scan a QR code and fill out the waiver. Then the next time you come, they will have it there and you won't have to do it again. This place is BYOB so we brought some beers and wine (no hard liquor as it is not allowed). We were in the "Money Pit" section and it was so cute and so private. There were couches for us to sit, 4 stool chairs , and a huge jenga which we also started playing. So I came here last night spontaneously because my sister really wanted to go after seeing her friends go last week and I've been wanting to come ever since there was a yelp event where they threw hatchets (but I didn't get accepted haha). ANYWAYS LOL. My sister found this place online and we had to book a timeslot online (along with a $25 deposit-the price for one person for one hour) before we went. We booked the 9:15pm-10:15pm at 7:30pm since all the other time slots were filled (so I recommend you booking in advance). We went 15 minutes early so we can sign the waiver and get instructions so that we can have the whole hour to ourselves. The parking lot is huge so you wouldn't have any problems with that. The place looks like it's held in an office which is a bit deceiving but honestly, the place once you go inside is HUGE. Once you arrive, you sign in and wait in line (there are brainteasers and restrooms) before you can go in. If you bring drinks, they have cups, ice, and bottle & wine opener for you to use without any charge. There is also a snack and drinks station so you don't have to worry if you get hungry or thirsty while you are there. Once you go in, you sign the waiver on the left while you wait for your instructor to take you to your station and teach you the correct method of throwing the axe. Our instructor Angel was SUPER sweet and funny; as well as all the other staff who made sure we were having fun and actually getting the bullseye haha. If you're in a group, there are other games like jenga, connect four, and shuffleboard while you wait. There's even a photobooth like station where you can take pictures with your phone. Overall, we both had an AMAZING time and had TONS of fun. Throwing an ax is harder than it looks haha. $25 for one hour / person was WELL worth the fun experience. They even have a day where you can invite family (ages 13+ for only $10/person for an hour and half) so that's fun too! Can't wait to bring others to release stress haha. Who doesn't love to throw axes!!!!!! This was a great place. I have seen these places pop up but this was my first venture into Axe Throwing. Came here with a small group and had a great time. Once we were given a lane, they provided some instruction and the let us unleash the fury. They came back from time to time just to check o. Us and provide suggestions. Everyone in our group picked it up pretty quickly and really enjoyed the evening. There were multiple ways to compete with each other. 21, horse, around the world just a ton of fun. Actually a really cool thing to do for a group of people. Something out of the norm. Went for my fiancé's bday party with about 20 people. We had two pits back and front of a picnic table with plenty of seats/benches, outlets, large table games like jenga and connect four. It was spacious, BYOB (beer or wine only) and BYOF. You sign a waiver online, pay in advance or in person, $40/ea for 2hrs is pretty decent honestly. The employees gave us a bunch of menus to order delivery. We brough chips and cupcakes, they had some nonalcoholic beverages for sale and some candies too. They bring out buckets of ice for all the drinks you bring too. They go over how to throw the hachets, how to do different throws, safety, and then just leave you to it. Everyone seemed very helpful and accommodating. This location is tucked back in a parking lot off the highway that is SUPER easy to miss if you're not paying real close attention. Follow the signs!! It would be best if they'd offer food or something at some point. Seems like a wasted opportunity for them. After a little while the wood on the boards did get a little spent and the hachets would stay after a couple throws. Stumpy's is such a fun addition to the area! This was my first time axe throwing and all of the staff were so kind and eager to help answer all my questions. I really liked the space you get for your group - Stumpy's really uses their overall space very well because although we were surrounded by 3 other groups it didn't feel cramped at all and we could still move around comfortably without worrying about bumping into anyone else. They let (and encourage!) you to bring your own food and drinks, we picked up some chips and sandwiches from a nearby deli and that was perfect for lunch. They do provide an ice bucket to keep any drinks cold which was a nice touch. Each reservation is 2 hours and I will say the novelty wears off after a while - if your group isn't very energetic it can feel like a long time. Between the 5 of us taking turns and playing a few games they suggest (rules and overviews are in each section for quick reference) the time passed pretty quickly. My only negative is that this place is hidden and easily passable if you're not looking for it. After parking we wandered around the different office-type buildings until we found the right one. It would have been nice if there was a bigger sign on the door to point you in the right direction initially (once you're inside there's plenty of signage so that wasn't an issue). Making a reservation online was tricky at first, But then I figured out you had to create an account. After that it was easy. Check in was easy, as well as accessing the waiver form online. The people who worked at the Fairfield location were very nice, friendly & accommodating. The facility was very clean. If you wanted the bull's-eye boards replaced they did it promptly. Stumpy's is really fun and has a large set up which I like! It is BYOB but they do have some restrictions (no high noons) so I would double check on alcohol before arriving as they do check your cooler/bags. They go over some basic rules with you before beginning but they don't really enforce them. The group next to us was slamming the ax's into the boards and no one addressed it (they were breaking the boards on purpose). It was super loud & distracting. You can also order food from local places for delivery or bring your own food in. It's $25 per person for one hour but if you buy 2 hours it's $40 per person. read more

Loved this place. Heard of Hatchet throwing places in South Jersey and excited to see them so close and to finally have a reason to get off at the business center on 46. Loved the decor; it was a mix of your Pinterest feed with reclaimed barnwood, red flannel and boutique Catskills hotel. The staff are down-to-earth and stunningly unconcerned with BYOB and hatchet-jitters that it gives you such a rush! Lots of space, lounge furniture, and they offer buckets and ice for your booze! When I was there I even saw people get pizza delivered. The whole thing is brilliant really, the more you eat and drink, the more time you play. No one is innately good at hatchet throwing unless you have Nordic blood, so you only end up getting bulls-eyes towards the last sweaty minutes of your time and it leaves you wanting more! Had a great time at Stumpy's Hatchet House - I went as part of a group and they accommodated us well. It's location is a little bit tricky to get to but theres plenty of parking. We checked in early and were taken to the axe throwing area, where we signed our forms and were shown to our throwing booth. The area they have for axe throwing is massive! Especially compared to other places I've been to, so definitely a great spot for a big group. It's BYOB (wine/beer only!) And it's set up nicely with couches/stools for the group to hang out while everyone takes turns throwing. Before we got to throw on our own, an instructor comes over and shows you exactly how to throw using proper technique- and by the way, he made it look so easy!! Definitely takes a few throws to get used to it but it's so much fun. They even have bells at every station that you can ring if you get a bullseye! We had a blast and our two hour reservation flew by! Definitely make sure to reserve in advance if you have a large group, and also make sure to wear close-toed shoes (part of their policy!). Let me just start by saying the staff here is fantastic. I've never been hatchet throwing in my life and it was the most fun I've ever had on a group outing. We decided to go here for my boyfriend's birthday after a recommendation from one of our close friends. I had a bad experience with another hatchet throwing place that were rude and useless. So working with Stumpy's was like a breath of fresh air. We had made reservations for two lanes (80 dollars for one lane for two hours. 80 covers two people's admission for that time). When we got to the venue we waited a little as we were early, but we got in directly when our time started. Our instructor Dave came over, explained a few ways how to throw the hatchets and all of the rules to keep us safe. Now I thought that the staff would have left us to ourselves and we would see them a few times to let us know how much time we had left. Boy was I wrong. Every worker came by our pit and helped us out. They would give us directions on how to throw better, have small talk with us and overall make our experience memorable. I have never been somewhere so friendly and fun. And if you're waiting for your turn in the pit, you can always go play their other games like giant jenga, giant connect 4,etc. When we were all done with our time the staff came out and presented us with a piece of the bullseye decorated for my boyfriend's birthday. As far as hatchet houses go, this was the best I've ever seen! Also, I've never been to a hatchet house. We went, 4 of us, on Saturday at 6pm. We were the only people there. We had an hour block, and by the time we had signed the waivers and been told how to throw it was about 6:20. 40 minutes for the 4 of us was plenty of time. I wouldn't say any of us were "good," but we all got some to stick so I'm calling that a win. They even gave my wife an old board when they found out she had just graduated with a PhD. Pretty cool. We tipped our hatchet guy $20, but I have no idea what the tip etiquette is here. It was about 80 outside when we went, and all they have are big oscillating fans in here, so we were hot. If this place was packed, it would probably be even hotter. They sell some drinks, and it's BYOB and they are fully stocked to keep your drinks cold so that's nice. There's a snack/refreshment bar available for designated drivers in your party. (Please have a DD, it's not the 60s anymore.) Prices are reasonable. It's like a dollar for a can of soda. The hatchet throwing itself is fun. The staff does a good job of demonstrating the appropriate way to throw. There's a "bullseye bell" that you can ring when you hit a bullseye and that adds to the entertainment value. Each area has a TV and they get extra points from me for not having cable news on. Honest to god one of my favorite experiences I've ever had. We went today (6/26) as a group of 6 for my birthday and even tho I totally dropped the ball and forgot to pay the $80 up front for a reservation, they were able to get us in the time we wanted. Also 100% missed how you can't wear open toes shoes (which in hindsight: duh) but the great news is they've got you covered! For $12 you can buy a pair of sneakers and it's absolutely worth it to be able to go in. SUPER MEGA SHOUT OUT to Katie who was our main instructor and was just the Best. She disclosed to us while we were leaving that she's very new, but you would NOT know it. We all were wildly surprised to learn that because she was so knowledgeable, a great teacher, and seemed so in her element (she's also so funny everyone should laugh at her jokes all the time). Make no mistake: everyone else on staff was also super great and doing a wonderful job as well!! As an aside for anyone thinking of going (which you should): if you have a wonky knee like I do, wear/bring your brace. There is a reason almost everyone has given Stumpy's 5 stars and it shows. The made first time axe throwers feel very comfortable and helped us learn the proper way to hit bullseyes. There is plenty of space for your group as well as other parties so you don't need to worry about accidentally having an axe come in your direction. If you are going to spend 2 hours here it is recommended to bring food as it's a way to break up the throwing which can get a little tiring if you are going for the full amount of time.
