The owner is a wealth of knowledge, he is passionate about a dying art form. I read a review that seemed to unjustly diminish the owner's contribution to craft. It seemed to imply he was some sort of racist and without specifics I think sometimes people treat you purely because you're an asshole that happens to be "of colour". The reviewer was Indian and instinctively roped every single "colour" in aide of his cause, weirdly enough the shop assistant is Indian(leaning too) and he allegedly received the best service from her. So the review wreaks of bias from someone stuck on subjectivity. The author claims to be a designer, that has nothing better to do than try to destroy one of the last importers of quality paper and ink. This is sad to see. He cites being world travelled and online alternatives from industrial assassins like Amazon, yet if you actually worked with pen and paper, you'd know how ridiculous his assault is. High quality pen and paper isn't as available to us in Canada, let alone Edmonton as easily as he would purport. I wanted to set the record straight, as the darkest "of colour" there is no racism here. Those that seek power to dehumanize others, are cursed to walk the earth as a disgruntled customer that wants to pick a fight with someone that dedicated their life to paper and ink(medium), when he lost he decided to douse the place in kerosene. Don't be his match, support this great store. Nothing is more beautiful than archiving your thoughts in beautiful paper with the best of ink. Instead light a torch the algorithm cannot extinguish. Never knew about this place until I accepted a quest from my coworker to help pickup a Xmas gift So stylin! Was also recently introduced to the world of watercolour painting and the expansive world of ink artwork - be it drawing, calligraphy, etc. I was so excited to try a new art medium that I had to go back and pickup a little starter kit (happy Xmas to me), which was also at a great price for the items inside! I have been going to Stylus ever since I read a rave review in the journal 10 years ago. It's full of pens and inks, and design quality office 'stuff'. Their ball point pens are gift quality, the fountain pens are fascinating and there are so many little intriguing things, that you have to return again, to see it all. I have astronaut pens that work in space, a letter opener like a comic musketeer, a desk cleaner like a miniature zamboni, and the staff are terrific. This is not a high pressure, showy sales place. Stylus sells fine pens and desk accessories. While I was still going to the university, this store was one of my favorite places to shop. Stylus has a truly great selection of beautiful and yes, espensive pens. They are great as a treat for youself and make a fantastic gift. Most of the pens and pencils sold at Stylus look good enough for a table of an executive. In additon to writing instruments, Stylus carries a nice selection of notebooks, journals, paper products and desk accessories such as staplers, letter openers and pen holders. Stylus is a store I enjoy browsing, as it is packed with different kinds of pens, inks, papers, and notebooks. The items here are on the high end of things, so I have not purchased anything just yet, although a few of the smaller, less expensive notebooks have caught my eye. The decor is clean, and the store is well laid out. The staff is friendly and quiet. The best part is that they are lovers of stationery and fountain pens; they are not trying to push for sales. When i entered stylus, i was charmed by the fact that I was allowed to browse quietly for a few moments. Then i was offered assistance, and left to my own devices for a few more minutes. I asked to see a handful of pens, and eventually settled on the Pilot Custom 74. The lady inked it up and allowed me to test write with it. Of course, it worked like a charm and i opted to purchase it. Additionally, she helped me select three inks. The prices in store are in line with the best-priced online retailers, so i encourage anyone interested in stationery, pens/pencils, and calligraphy to visit Stylus. The service is courteous and professional, the staff are knowledgeable and helpful, AND you are able to test products before purchase. The store has great selection, too. Hats off to you, Stylus. I'm a fountain pen enthusiast and I've been to Stylus about three times over the course of the year. Every time I visited they didn't have everything I was looking for in stock. One time I left my number so they could call when the item I wanted was delivered and they didn't follow through which was disappointing. The hours seem to be different each time I come and as I'm writing this review I can find them posted on their website or on google. As others have pointed out the staff are disinterested and aren't inclined to help you. They are also very expensive when compared to other Canadian fountain pen dealers. For example I frequently see the Lamy Safari for $35 online and at Stylus it's $45. I understand brick and mortar stores can't complete with a lot of online retailers, but I'd rather save my money if I'm not going to get good service and have to work around their unconventional business hours. read more

This is the only major pen store in Edmonton and I am very disappointed. The staff need to be retrained. Or they could just restaff the store. Unfortunately, I find this to be the case with many pen stores, but Stylus really takes the cake. The employee who "helped" me did seem to know her pens, but she does not know her sales. Maybe this is how they are trained, but she had the same delivered lines over and over again. In order to simply hold the pen you're interested in and see if it feels right to you, you have to bring her over to the display case, have her remove it, and then go sit at a special little desk and the employee will sit on the other side and hand you the pen. This is the only way they will do things. This is a nice set up for actually testing the pens, but as someone who knows fountain pens, sometimes I simply want to hold the pen quickly - for 2 or 5 seconds - and establish whether I am comfortable with the pen's weight and barrel width. I don't need it inked up, I don't need paper, I don't want to sit down; I just need to feel the damn pen. You know right away whether you like the feel of the pen and want to try it out, or whether it's not for you. It's really irritating to have to walk back and forth to this little desk. Especially because by the time I've walked to the desk, sat down, waited for her to sit down, been handed the pen, held it, handed it back, and gotten back up... I'VE FORGOTTEN WHAT I WAS LOOKING AT. If you test a pen, they take it behind the desk to clean it right away, which makes me feel bad when I want to test it again 5 minutes later to compare it beside another pen. Normally I would simply pick the pens I want to examine further (AFTER HOLDING THEM) and have them all inked at once, but the layout of the store prevents this. Honestly, if you had a really nice, friendly, personable sales rep, this layout wouldn't be 100% horrible. But throw in an awkward, kind of rude salesperson and you have a recipe to not sell anything because people are afraid to ask to try the darn pens. I understand the "boutique", studio style look. You've tried it. Great. It doesn't work. Please redesign your store like a normal pen store, with jewelry-style counters. That way, the sales attendant can be on one side, I can be on the other side, and we can hold pens happily all day long. Also, when the pens are being displayed horizontally in a row (stacked), it doesn't make sense to place the price cards in front of the rack left-to-right. They should be stuck beside the pen, or tied to the pen. It does me no good to know that Parker has a range of pens from $80-$800, and they're all on this one rack... it needs to be clearer which pen is which price. And, like most pen stores, the pens should go from cheaper (the cheap Asian brands, Lamy, Conklin) at the front of the store) to more expensive (Sheaffer, Parker, and eventually Mont Blanc at the back of the store). This way I'm not wandering around looking for a mid-range pen, getting distracted by $4,500 Mont Blanc limited editions and missing a display I might like because it's sandwiched between two rainbow racks of $28 Lamy Safaris. If you're looking to go in and spend less than $40 on a cheap plastic fountain pen, and your main criteria is that it's got a double-digit price and bright colours, go here and buy the second pen you try. There's NOTHING wrong with that; we all start somewhere, and I encourage you to do this so that you eventually get hooked on fountain pens and give the manufacturers reason to keep producing pens for me to buy. If you're already a serious pen enthusiast, and you might want to handle and test a dozen or so pens, then go.... I don't know, I guess you'll have to move somewhere that has a decent pen store. PS - I also want to note that when I asked she had a recommendation for a pen with a nib that would bleed less, I was told I would have to use a higher quality paper. I know that paper is the biggest factor when considering ink bleed, but obviously I can't write on $18/package paper all the time (especially when I'm filling up 3-4 100 page legal pads per week), and a dedicated pen salesperson should be able to come up with SOMETHING. read more

I have been there several times to purchase various things and the products and the service has always been excellent. They have things for many price ranges, though they cater towards higher end products. One visit particularly jogs my memory... I was purchasing a gift last minute for a coworker - about 10 minutes before their going away lunch. The woman running the store (Grace, Gracie?) was kind enough to help us wrap the gift. It was wrapped in a old paper sheet from an oversized wall calendar. So, the gift paper just had a giant "18" on one side and a "25" on the other. It was super cool, super kind, and really helped us out. I have also used their inks for wedding place cards and various things like that. If you are a pen nerd, check them out. I admittedly am not the kind of person that typically takes the time or effort to write reviews but i was so blown away by this store, it was imperative that i do so. They carry amazing products and the owner is super friendly. I was awed by the scope of ink pens they carry. Their pens range from as low as $25 to as high as $900 and over, to suit everyones needs and functions. As a newbie attempting my hand at writing, i settled for a lovely Scheffer pen that cost only $30; Even at that reasonable price, it is beautifully designed and writes very well! All the other places i checked prior to Stylus, sold pens for way more expensive that weren't half as nice. I was at first reluctant to go to Stylus because i thought they would have only really expensive pens and high mark-ups, but i couldn't have been more wrong! They have an impressive array of pens that are priced very very well. My amazing experience didn't stop there, the owner of the store was super friendly and helpful. He went out of his way to make sure i was buying the right kind of pen for myself based on a sample of my writing and then went on to recommended the right kind of tip for me. He took the time and effort to carefully show me how to clean and work with the pen without me having to ask for his help. I love to support small, local businesses that are trying to make it and this is a store i would definitely recommend everyone to visit. They also sell a myriad of great quality stationary besides pens. All in all, a great store with a great owner! I will be going there quite often. read more

I always go here as I'm a fountain pen and paper enthusiast like a lot of other people who find this store. I do wish there was more of a selection of paper and stationery accessories since Notables has gone but Stylus' focus is about the pens. I got my first adult fountain pen here and the lady was very nice in my picking process. I do agree with others that she repeats the same thing over and some of her tips, which I later found out, weren't always the best for the long-term maintenance for fountain pens. Do your research online, in which there are tons of resources, and you'll find her advice to be "okay" beginner advice. The hours really suck for this place, I can never go on weekdays, because as soon as I'm done my regular workday shift, this place closes by the time I get there. They're also closed Sundays. I do hope though that with the retail economy in Edmonton and booming online businesses that this place sticks around for a long time. I do love supporting local and their prices are lower, if not equal, to both Canadian and American online websites. I'd prefer not to pay huge markups/shipping/customs on pens from the States if this place goes. read more

The first time I came to Stylus, a really nice gentleman helped me choose a fountain pen for every day use. He was super helpful and patient with me, educating me on how to change the converter, clean the pen, and even about using different brands of inks. I was so impressed by the customer service that I knew I wanted to continue supporting the business. I came back not even two weeks ago and the nice gentleman (whom I now think is the owner of the store and actually isn't in very often) was not there but there was a lady there to watch the store. She didn't offer to help me at first and when I was deciding between two fountain pens, I asked to try them out - believing that I would have the same service that I had the first time I came into the store. She was reluctant to let me do so and just said "normally people know if they would like the pen just by the shape of the barrel". I told her that I'm fairly new to fountain pens and that I'm not sure what my preference is yet. I finally was able to try out the pens and bought the one I liked, along with another bottle of ink. I didn't leave feeling as good as I did after my first experience, but I still had plans to come back. I came in another time when both the gentleman from my first visit and the saleslady were in the store. This time, I was looking for a Shimmering Ink. The Saleslady was quick to dismiss me, saying that they no longer have the colour I wanted in stock and didn't want to check for me. The nice man was working in the backroom and came out when he heard me and offered to check in the back for me. Luckily, they did have it in stock and he was happy to retrieve it for me. After this experience, I told my brother-in-law about how I was treated by the saleslady the past two times as he was the one who recommended this store to me and he was shocked by my experience because he said that he's had good service from all his visits. This brings me to why I wrote this review in the first place. Since that day I went to buy my Shimmering Ink, I haven't seen the nice gentleman again but have only been in the store when the saleslady was there. I was just in there yesterday looking to buy a couple more pens and a few bottles of ink to add to my collection. She mentioned that they were low in stock so I asked to sit down and just look at their colour samples. I noticed that this saleslady was super attentive to the other male customers that walked into the store but had completely ignored me (a woman) the entire time. Even when I asked her questions, she was quick to dismiss them and did not elaborate while she took the time to ask the male customers how their day was, how they used their plans, flirted, and even made other suggestions. I was really disappointed to see this and knowing that I wasn't going to get any further assistance, I left the store without purchasing anything. Stylus is great for stationary lovers and they have a great selection of inks when its in stock but I must say that their customer service needs some improvement because it's a huge deterrent for me to visit the store and frankly, if Im going to be treated poorly, I would rather shop online. read more

This store is a balm. Its stock and the lightly-worn knowledge of its staff remind me that words and writing are more than a mere function: the process and the product should add some beauty to life since we spend so much time writing at work. Plus, whatever I buy there is well-made, very good value for money, and reliable. A case in point is my Receife eyedropper fountain pen. It gives me a whole trial worth of notes and gets refilled very infrequently, while its nib writes fast and stays clean, with little attention to me. Furthermore, the staff's attention to detail often means it's better to buy from Stylus than from competing stores. A case in point is the Lamy Safari fountain pen: a classy, robust work pen that takes a wide range of nibs. Typically, it is sold without a converter, which is sold as a costly accessory - if it's available at all. Stylus, by contrast, only sells the Safari with a converter. I buy Safari pens only from Stylus because bottled ink is cheaper than Lamy's proprietary ink cartridges and because the Stylus price for pen plus converter is economical. read more

Got yelled at by the salesgirl Grace because I brought a leaking pen back after 2 days. I'll never shop there again and I will only order my fountain pens online. I'm a dedicated fountain pen user, and I love this shop. I've spent a lot of time and money online ordering fountain pen friendly notebooks, inks and other paraphernalia from all over the world over the years: Stylus has assembled the creme of the crop in one small but stylishly appointed space. While many items have been selected with fountain pen compatibility in mind, any pen and paper lover will enjoy browsing through (and using) the high quality products. The prices, while high when compared to what you pay for standard office supply store fare, are very reasonable for what is quite literally some of the best stuff of its kind in the world. That said, there are still some inexpensive gems: for example, check out the fabulous Apica notebooks from Japan. As the previous reviewer said, the atmosphere is relaxed and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable but happy to let you browse on your own.
