A little overhyped or maybe it's because I didn't want to spend $17.95 for the 24K California Burrito? Still, I think it's a solid spot for burritos and birria. I recommend ordering online because it's a literally a hole in the wall spot. There's no seating, so it's basically a grab and go type of place. Been wanting to go here for a long time now and I'm not sure that I'm glad that I did. The online pics looks amazing and the items that we got were the 24k burrito's (carne asada and al pastor), birria tacos and the churro donuts. I'm an al pastor burrito guy and this one was way too heavy on the spice/seasoning and kinda overpowered everything. Also there was barely any trace of tater tots which I was really looking forward to. My daughters ate the asada and said it was just ok. One thing is that the burritos are smaller than your super at El Farolito but they do pack it in there and it's pretty filling! The birria was actually pretty good and they gave a couple different sauces and cabbage and I would recommend it. I was also looking forward to eating the churro donuts on the drive back home because I thought they would be hot n good but that wasn't the case. They musta pulled them out from under a warming lamp because they were barely lukewarm to cold so that was a fail. Overall, it's not bad, but definitely pricier than most of the other popular Mex spots and now that I think about it, I probably won't go back because of it. Summary: Flavorful, but HEAVY Details: They just opened up a new branch in SF, but we wanted an excuse to hit up San Mateo, and Latin American is always a good enough excuse. While photos of their SF location suggest some seeing, this OG location is pretty much pickup/delivery only: a fairly literal hole in the wall, located along a random quiet street. Most folks would probably opt to take home or eat at one of the "nearby" parks, but we've gotten in the habit of just eating in the car, which... not so great for something as messy as birria lol. I'll say that for most folks, this would probably easily be more a 4 star spot, while for us, it's more a 2 star since we're unlikely to come back. That's not to say the food was bad: on the contrary, the flavors were quite good, and the consomme was less salty than some of the others we've tried. But their food is HEAVY. Not just the birria itself, but also the burrito we got, and heavier than other places we've been for some reason, with the birria sitting in a pool of oil soon after we picked it up. This probably isn't a deterrent for most people though, so take this as you will. The place itself is a hole in the wall next to the 101 freeway in an area one wouldn't expect. There's no seating since it's a grab-and-go spot. Parking is street parking and generally easy to find. Each order of quesobirria tacos comes with 3 tacos, consomme, and some slaw. It's a bit pricey (almost $20) for 3 tacos and initially we were taken aback by the price. Gotta love California style Mexican food. This place really hits the spot. It's a kitchen with a window that's takeout-only in a residential / industrial area. Very clean looking and seemingly quiet / peaceful inside. The food is satisfying every time and their presentation is pristine. I never really struggle eating this food in the car overall, so that's really appreciated, although if you order more than one boxed item, their thin and tight paper bags could be hard to juggle / maneuver food. The 24k California burrito includes perfectly crispy tater tots and their signature orange sauce. It's pricey but also too large for one person in one sitting, so you can split it. I really love their tots! Their quesadilla is also perfection. I've been having a hard time finding just straightforward, non oily/greasy quesadilla, but this place is it. Only complaint on this dish though is that it doesn't really come with any hefty sides (e.g. sour cream, pico de gallo) which to me is surprising and for the price, I'd really expect something -- especially compared to other menu items like their chicken taquitos that do include sides / multiple dips for less price too. The chicken taquitos might be the best my husband and I have ever had. They're huge and hefty, generous portions and come with guacamole and Mexican cream / sour cream. Their birria are also delicious but I tend not to crave birria as much. I also love their house horchata. Of course messy to eat but yummy. Chipotle BBQ Chicken Burrito (5/5): Okay!! Yum! This is a very delicious burrito. It's not your traditional nor authentic flavors at all with the sweeter and slightly saucy chicken, but if you like BBQ sauce, this chipotle bbq choice of protein is a wonderful choice. If the doors are closed, keep on driving. There is no restaurant. The building faces a soundwall that blocks off most of the noise from the 101 Freeway. The orders are made to order so you can expect a wait unless you placed an order in advance. Be sure to wear a sweater or a jacket if you're sensitive to cold. It can get windy here. Service was terrific. The order taker answered all of our questions. The menu is pretty small and simple. Best to check it online before you arrive. We ordered two sets of Quesabirria Tacos. Each came with three tacos, consomme, pickled cabbage, salsa verde and lime wedges. Use the condiments, dip the tacos in the consomme and eat! When the tacos are gone, drink the remaining consomme. Then burp and prepare for the full belly coma to come. The tacos are loaded with flavorful tender beef and tons of cheese. I would have liked a bit more cilantro but I'm just a greedy person. The consomme was absolutely perfect, not a salt bomb like so many other places. We also ordered Agua Frescas to drink. She got Strawberry Lime and I got Horchata. Those are house made and packaged in plastic bottles. Ask the order taker nicely and they will provide you with cups of ice if you like your drink super cold.
