Summary: Flavorful, but HEAVY Details: They just opened up a new branch in SF, but we wanted an excuse to hit up San Mateo, and Latin American is always a good enough excuse. While photos of their SF location suggest some seeing, this OG location is pretty much pickup/delivery only: a fairly literal hole in the wall, located along a random quiet street. Most folks would probably opt to take home or eat at one of the "nearby" parks, but we've gotten in the habit of just eating in the car, which... not so great for something as messy as birria lol. I'll say that for most folks, this would probably easily be more a 4 star spot, while for us, it's more a 2 star since we're unlikely to come back. That's not to say the food was bad: on the contrary, the flavors were quite good, and the consomme was less salty than some of the others we've tried. But their food is HEAVY. They do a nice thick layer of cheese as the base right on the tortilla then they absolutely load it with birria meat, avocado, tater tots, and orange sauce. The place itself is a hole in the wall next to the 101 freeway in an area one wouldn't expect. There's no seating since it's a grab-and-go spot. Parking is street parking and generally easy to find. Gotta love California style Mexican food. This place really hits the spot. It's a kitchen with a window that's takeout-only in a residential / industrial area. I never really struggle eating this food in the car overall, so that's really appreciated, although if you order more than one boxed item, their thin and tight paper bags could be hard to juggle / maneuver food. The 24k California burrito includes perfectly crispy tater tots and their signature orange sauce. It's pricey but also too large for one person in one sitting, so you can split it. I really love their tots! Their quesadilla is also perfection. I've been having a hard time finding just straightforward, non oily/greasy quesadilla, but this place is it. Only complaint on this dish though is that it doesn't really come with any hefty sides (e.g. sour cream, pico de gallo) which to me is surprising and for the price, I'd really expect something -- especially compared to other menu items like their chicken taquitos that do include sides / multiple dips for less price too. The chicken taquitos might be the best my husband and I have ever had. They're huge and hefty, generous portions and come with guacamole and Mexican cream / sour cream. Service was terrific. The order taker answered all of our questions. The menu is pretty small and simple. Best to check it online before you arrive. We ordered two sets of Quesabirria Tacos. Each came with three tacos, consomme, pickled cabbage, salsa verde and lime wedges. Use the condiments, dip the tacos in the consomme and eat! When the tacos are gone, drink the remaining consomme. Then burp and prepare for the full belly coma to come. The tacos are loaded with flavorful tender beef and tons of cheese. I would have liked a bit more cilantro but I'm just a greedy person. The consomme was absolutely perfect, not a salt bomb like so many other places. We also ordered Agua Frescas to drink. She got Strawberry Lime and I got Horchata. Those are house made and packaged in plastic bottles. Ask the order taker nicely and they will provide you with cups of ice if you like your drink super cold. The shrimp was so plump and fresh. Tater tots weren't as tater totty crispy as I expected but then again it's in a burrito. I did prefer the tater tots compared to fries in the usual California burrito. Quesabirria was cheesy, with a generous amount of meat, and delicious consommé. The chicken taquitos were so crunchy and refreshing dipped in their fresh guacamole. We parked alongside the road and ate in the car. Lots of cars came by and picked up orders during that time. We ordered at the window, with about 10-15 minute wait for the food. We had the cauliflower, mushroom tacos and the bbq chicken tacos followed by churro donuts. The cauliflower was mildly spiced balanced well with the perfectly cooked mushrooms. The bbq chicken tacos were more flavorful than the cauliflower mushroom tacos. Would recommend the chicken for a bit more flavor. I may even return to try some of the birria tacos which I've heard were pretty good here! I can't finish the Quesabirria in one sitting and I usually eat a lot. It's 2 meals. I also never seen a taqueria give such a big bag of tortilla. I heard they are made in house too! Can't beat that. Popular place so we tried it one Sunday night. We stood in line for over 20 minutes before ordering, so not a big deal. My wife ordered two carnitas tacos, which had a plentiful amount of protein. The condiments bar was also plentiful and added great flavor to the tacos. My mistake was to California Burrito. I was told it had protein of my choice (pork was my choice), guacamole, French fries and cheese.
