Was in need for a quick lunch, so grabbing a burrito was in order. I've seen Las Palomas walking up/down 3rd and decided to give it a try. Since it was my first time here, I decided to grab a carne asada super burrito. After tax came in around $14. The burrito itself was massive! Although I did finish the whole thing in one seating, I could've easily made it into two smaller meals. Everything about this was fresh. It had that classic taqueria taste, crispy bits of carne, fresh salsa, and it was pretty good. It's the type of burrito that will satisfy the craving. Only things was I wish the tortilla was grilled a bit more and had a little bit more sour cream and guacamole. The space itself was pretty big, with plenty of 4-top tables and a couple of booths. The chips were fresh and crispy. They had a variety of salsas, and the salsa verde and the orange one were my favorite. When I walked in it appeared no one was working there and then two people who were hanging out around the building came in. Felt pressured to order quickly, but they were polite enough. Got nachos, figured that's safe. Chips were from a bag and mildly stale, "guacamole " was clearly squeezed from a bag, the bare minimum amount of cheese, scarce salsa and sour cream. I wanted to like this place more than I did. It was OK. Ambience - it's actually nice in there. Bigger than what they need - feels more like a restaurant than a Taqueria - but other than the terrible menu with the bad pictures, it's nicely decorated, plenty of space, and seems clean. The problem is it's totally empty in there so it feels a little weird. Food - I ordered a super veggie burrito. It was dry and had a sort of char flavor, which I assume was purposeful, but I didn't love it. The salsa bar was good - clean, fully stocked, with a nice variety - although as another poster mentioned, none of the sauces were particularly spicy by my standard. The burrito was better with the salsa on it, But I felt like it could've used some cheddar cheese or guacamole or lettuce or something. It was just kind of dry and salty. The tortilla was fine. Service - again the vibe is a little odd because this place is just too big for the amount of business they're doing, but I didn't wait long and the lady came back from behind the kitchen pretty quickly, took my order and was very nice. I paid nearly $20 for this burrito and it's mostly rice and beans, hardly no meat, and definitely not the meat I ordered, it was birria, like what the absolute ef. Every time I've been here, the food is so good. The prices are extremely reasonable (you could probably be full for like $10). The people are very nice and accommodating. Decent guacamole and chips (on the spicy side) and the horchata was just okay but they have very good sevice. My coworkers got the burritos and said aveeage 3 stars. Came here for beers since our regular place closed down. Very nice cozy spot. Not a big beer selection though. Was pretty empty at the time with only a few people. Saw the food that was brought out and it looked really good. Already had plans to eat down the street. Big plus that they have a help yourself salsa bar. I've been here a number of times since they opened (reopened?) not long ago, and keep coming back for a few key strengths here The salsa bar is comprehensive - wide range of spice levels and textures, the mild Pico is well seasoned and not watery, several of the spicier sauces have a nice roast pepper flavor. The oily sauce is by far the fieriest, and almost reminds me of Chinese type sauces I've been pleased with the taco meat offerings here as well, the carne asada, chorizo, and lengua I'd say are especially good, and can now also say they execute a nice and crispy quesadilla The only thing keeping me from 5 stars here is just consistency, across all my visits, the meats have come at inconsistent spice levels, most of the time a normal level of spice, but once or twice have been super spicy. I always use carnitas tacos as my initial judgement of a Mexican place. The carnitas tacos here were extremely dry and chewy. Not a lot of taste. And literally not much else in them, a bit of onions. Should have taken a pic. Plus it took 10 minutes and there was only one other person in the place at noon.. That concerned me but I often try new places. A plate of 6 beauties.. enchiladas chill, i got them with steak but they have chicken and asesina! The host are always attentive they remember regulars! This has been my go-to restaurant since the 2010s at their old location, their food is amazing, they have good variety, drinks, salsa bar, and the BURRITOS ARE AMAZING. Super burrito with any meat is the one to order. That and their Birria is amazing. You get good portions for the price. Food here was good and portion size was a lot. They have a self serve chips and salsa stand. You can choose from 6 fresh sauces. We only got to try 3 of them. The dishes we got were served with warm tortillas and comes with option of refried or black beans. My boyfriend went for the steak fajitas. This dish has marinated grilled steak fajitas topped with butter grilled peppers and onion. My boyfriend like this dish. I ended up ordering the fish fillet. This dish had marinated fish fillet marinated with a mix of spices grilled with butter, onion, bell peppers, bean and rice. The fish tasted tender and not dry and was good. Picked up burritos for dinner. Ordered the Super Burrito, and you need to pay $1 extra each for cheese and guac as add-ons. I thought that's what a "super" burrito was supposed to be, like at most taquerias. They gave us one of those small, 2oz containers with about a tablespoon of cheese, and guac that did not seem freshly made - more like a guac sauce, so neither was really enough for the whole burrito. That being said we stumbled into Las Palomas yesterday while walking around the area. I was familiar with the Millbrae location and was obsessed with it 15 years ago when I was in high school. I remember being bummed at the time and knew of the San Mateo location but never made it. Long story short it's even better than I remembered. So good we came back two days in a row and are comteplating coming tomorrow for breakfast. If you're looking for authentic pastor tacos, great family owned service, endless chips with a dozen plus salsas, fair pricing, a solid taco salad and, the most delish carne asada... My first time at this taqueria. The restaurant is spacious with high ceilings and open windows for those who are Covid conscious or just want to people watch. Food is solid with good sized portions. Their prices have gone up (understandably) but it's still a good value. Got the lengua and carne asada taco platter. Lots of meat and very tasty! Huge mound of rice and beans included. The carnitas here are consistently delicious. The carne asada in the burrito had chewy bits so not my favorite. Everything I've had has been well-seasoned - including the rice and beans. I had a surprisingly good experience! The place doesn't look like much, and the service wasn't great, but the food delivered. We had a super unique dish, the molcajete mixto. It was a mix of chicken, shrimp, veggies, and cheese in a thick almost broth, served piping hot in the molcajete. We stopped by tonight at the new location of Las Palomas Taqueria - the restaurant has moved a few blocks down 3rd Ave in Downtown San Mateo. The new address is 92 E 3rd Ave. Good food at good prices, and it's totally a family shop that keeps it friendly and easy. We enjoyed sitting out front (where everybody walking by was noticing the "Grand Opening" sign and discussing how they should have come here for dinner).
