No big deal our wait was well worth it. I deconstructed my sons burritto when it arrived because it looked so huge. Most places you would unroll it and find mediocre amounts of mixed up blah. The presentation on all of these burrittos were spot on!!! They placed everything so it was in every bite and we might have well had asked for extra meat because they did NOT skimp out on that like most places. Everything tasted fresh, came to the table fast and the staff was very friendly. I was super excited for their California burrito but honestly i was a bit disappointed. I ordered 2 to go, and got there 15 mins after the phone call, and the food wasn't ready, despite the person taking the order said 15-20 mins; I was okay waiting; but the wait turned to be 20+ mins at the restaurant too! The reason is, there was only one person in the kitchen making the food for everyone! I felt so bad for him, since they were so busy (had about 10-12 people in the restaurant). The ladies weren't too friendly, I wasn't sure why. Food: it was really oily, I could feel my arteries clotting (a bit dramatic, I know) seriously the oil was dropping from the burrito); I had a quarter of it and decided to toss the rest. Deducted one star for oily food. Their salsa was good, and so was their meat, but I think the service, with weight, nonchalant waiters, and feeling bad for one chef, combined with the oily burrito made the experience kind of dull. One good thing about this whole SIP situation, is that I'm trying more new restaurants now more than ever. I'm comfy with takeout, sanitizing as much as I can when I do, and it's helped me find gems like Los Primos! My gauge on any taqueria is how well they do carne asada, with the thought process of if a place can do carne asada well, it's ok in my book. One bite in, I was impressed. The burrito itself doesn't look very big at first sight, but it filled me to the brim. The ingredients are basic -- meat, rice, beans, cheese, guac, you know the usuals. Simple ingredients, done beautifully. One of most balanced, fresh tasting burritos I've had in a long time! If you are like me and you love carne asada super burritos, I'd highly recommend trying this place out! Being the big eater, I ordered a fish taco as well. It's grilled fish, and I was expecting fried (I didn't check, that's on me), and I thought it was ok, not my fav, but that's because I love me my burritos! With so many options of taquerias in Downtown San Mateo, Los Primos is definitely at the top my list for best carne asada burritos! read more

Food was marginal at best. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but we started off with a good chunk of the too-go order missing. Should have checked better so not basing the review on that but it doesn't help. Fish tacos were mid. It was tiny pieces indistinguishable from the condiments. Shrimp tacos ok but just didn't look great. Cane asada better grab or but man this is tiny bits of meat as in tiny, tiny. Chicken flouta were ok and had a lot of chicken. Peppers and onion side was nicely grilled but man is it that hard to put on a plate as opposed to just foil which leaks? Shrimp ceviche needed more lime and more time marinating. Burrito looked good but super should have avocado imho. Overall we tried a lot (missed the chile relleno from the order) and was not impressed. Cash only. read more

The al pastor burrito here is the BEST one I've tried in all the taquerias around this area -- well flavored meat, cheesy texture, good amount of fillings, it's got it all. The one downside is that it's cash-only, and the indoor ATM machine to withdraw cash is basically robbing you with its service fees, so carry your own cash before you come here! read more

Yelp led me to Taqueria Los Primos and, I have to say, that was one of the absolute BEST breakfast burritos I ever ate! What I liked most about it was that it was dry, meaning no extra juices ran down to the bottom of the burrito to mush things up. It was perfectly balanced bite-for-bite. While running some last minute errands on Thanksgiving Day, we were struggling to find an open restaurant to pick-up lunch from, but were lucky enough to find this hidden gem! It's a small place in a row of shops in San Mateo, but it's well worth finding it. We ordered two Carne Asada regular burritos, one Pastor taco, and one Giant Carnitas quesadilla. Everything tasted great, but my personal favorites were the Pastor/Carnitas. Amazing flavor and perfectly prepared. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's overflowing with hospitality on the inside. Our server was just about the nicest woman ever. Super friendly. Breakfast burritos were huge, very reasonably priced, and delicious. Extremely moist. Unlimited chips & salsa served alongside them for free. Super cheap but delicious Mexican food that hit the spot. The inside is actually a bit larger than expected (I didn't expect them to have that many tables), and you get free chips and salsa while you order and wait for your food. Their food is really cheap - my quesadilla with meat and cheese was only $5, and the super nachos with meat, cheese, sour cream, salsa and guacamole was only $6. Portion sizes were large, too - we certainly ate well for only paying about $16 total! The carnitas, which we got in the quesadilla, were really good. I thought the carne asada in the nachos was a bit dry, and the guacamole was a weird texture that didn't taste homemade. It was a tasty, fast meal though! read more

3.5 stars There's nothing fancy about Los Primos Taqueria, a rustic, family-run restaurant dishing out affordable Mexican-American eats from its tiny kitchen! I started with the carne asada torta, built on two griddled halves of a generic brown roll, along with lettuce, tomatoes, and salsa. Disappointingly, the sandwich came with relatively little of the chopped carne asada filling, and the flavors overall were rather underwhelming. Next, I had the Giant Super quesadilla with shrimp--what a cool sounding dish! The quesadilla was filled with a liquidy filling of shrimp, cheese, sour cream, and guac; folded into a rectangular packet; and then griddled to a nice toasty brown. Not bad, but again the flavors were definitely toned down, though the salsa roja, salsa verde, and pico de gallo that came on the side added a much-needed brightness. Finally, my favorite dish was the tostada de ceviche, a mixture of chopped raw shrimp marinated in lemon juice and tossed with red onion, cilantro, cucumber, and tomato, and served on a tostada. The ceviche had a nice acidic flavor and refreshing crunch, though I thought it could've used a bit more spice! I am not a good judge of authentic Mexican food, but my son who spent time at UC Merced eating Mexican food said this place is very good. We went on a very hot day and it's not air conditioned here. Yet it was busy around 1:30 and the customers were speaking Spanish. I did not enjoy my food because of the heat but everyone else seemed to enjoy what they ordered. I am just a taco or burrito person but they do have other items and provide a nice variety of grilled peppers, onions and sauces. Very reasonably priced. read more

Your average local taqueria joint Perfect place for stopping by if you are tired from a day's work looking for some no-BS taqueria food. The salsa is the bomb--really good stuff. Definitely get more of that. The ambiance is average, ok-clean for a local joint, although there are some flies flying around. The service was pretty good, although the waitress gave me this weird look because I was asian :) This place don't usually see a lot of asian customers. She went out of her way to help me with the menu though. The price of the food is of course excellent. $5 for a taco-rice-bean meal set. Bay Area native all my life. I have tried thousands and thousands of burritos in my day. Been in the Peninsula for 20 years or so and have probably been to every taqueria around. Always on the hunt for fantastic carne asada. FINALLY found it here. Besides the extremely tasty meat, the menu is easy and simple. The prices are fantastic for the area. The staff is friendly and sweet. The place is superbly clean. Chips, salsa and grilled onions and chilis included. What more can you ask for? Cash only and parking is limited but well worth the hunt.
