Have not visited in person (yet). And the remade denim jacket I bought online exceeded my expectations. Not only did they come up with a really good design that fits well and will continue to exist outside of trends, but the construction is gorgeous! They chose the scrap for each pattern piece with a good eye so that it's interesting when put all together, but in a subtle way that's not like a patchy clown show. And whomever made it really can sew. It's precise and detail-oriented work. Very well-finished. So while I spent real money on this jacket, to find a piece of comparable quality and wabi-sabiness would most likely mean looking to Japanese labels, which cost four-five times as much (once imported into the US, anyway.) So having that perspective, it's actually a super bargain. read more

I followed Suay for a long time before visiting the store. I went when there was a local vendors and artisinal event happening on their premises and the lot across the street. The vibes are of complete expressions of community love. I had a set of yellow sweats that I wanted to turn in for the community dye. The process was simple: I met with the owner and he explained to me the process. The community dye is about a two month turnaround as they are dealing with large amounts of garment. I didn't mind as I do not have a set up that would allow me to dye heavy cotton sweats and a hoodie. I absolutely LOVED how my garments came out. I asked for them to dye it black. The dye will only take on to the natural fibers and not the synthetic material so my sweats were black with contrasting yellow stitching (my photo does no justice on how deep the black is.) This is an upcycle design sew shop. The money spent here goes towards talented and skilled garment workers, working on unique designs, depending on the materials they have. A piece bought here is UNIQUELY yours and no two are the same. The items are quality and are worth the price that they set. I was eyeing a tote made of quilted bomber jacket material. Their ottomans are also sturdy as well as stylish. Beware: Quality Control Issues and Poor Customer Communication I'm especially disappointed writing this because I'm a returning customer. I've used SUAY before, had a great experience, and even referred others because I genuinely believe in their mission. Unfortunately, this experience was completely different. I dropped off my garments in April, understanding the advertised turnaround time was 4-6 weeks, so I reasonably expected them back by late June. Instead, I didn't receive a pickup notification until July 9. Delays happen. My frustration wasn't simply that the order took longer than expected--it was the lack of communication. I reached out because I hoped to have my garments before an international trip, and it took nearly a week to receive a response. It was also discouraging to see products from the same dye batches being posted for sale before customers had received updates about their own orders. Later, SUAY announced a business move that further delayed pickups. If operational changes are going to impact customer orders, I believe customers deserve proactive communication rather than finding out after the fact. Unfortunately, the problems didn't end there. I requested a pair of pants be dyed in Blue Ride, selecting the solid dye option. Instead, I received a black tie-dyed pair of pants--an entirely different dye technique than what I ordered. To their credit, the employee immediately acknowledged it was their mistake. I was offered a refund, a gift card, and the opportunity to have the garment re-dyed. I appreciate those efforts to make it right. However, for a business whose core service is custom dyeing customers' garments, I expect stronger quality control. This wasn't a slight variation in color. I received an entirely different finish than the one I selected. That kind of error made me question how my order made it through production and back to me without being caught. Ultimately, this experience wasn't just about one mistake. It was the combination of delayed communication, missed expectations, and a significant quality control failure that caused me to lose confidence. I still believe in SUAY's mission. But mission-driven organizations aren't exempt from providing excellent customer service. Transparency, communication, and quality control are part of the service customers are paying for. At first I just mailed in items to be dyed, it takes a while but so worth it. I finally live close enough to go in-person and wow such a great mission and the dyed and upcycled pieces are clever and stylish. The thrift is great too, I found Levi's and leather for $5 bucks, no joke and the "remade" pieces are innovative. I bought some pinstripe shorts until the shop via, forgot your name sorry!, showed me the samples in back I found incredible napkins and placemats for my new place. I also dropped off a new item for the dye bath. I really respect their opinions too because they are honest if something cannot be dyed. I love all my new stuff and can't wait to visit more often. Love their mission and what they're doing to curb clothing waste and up cycle. I brought in 3 items - top, tank top, and a strappy dress. They messaged me saying the tank top developed tears to the point where it was irreparable. This was pretty disappointing to hear because it was my mom's tank top she gave to me -- it's a plain white tank top that she's had for years. I picked up the other items and one of the straps on the dresses looked like it came off in the process so now it's literally hanging on by a thread. Showed the photo to them and they said "it endured some wearing through the process, a pretty common occurrence"... So basically only 1 item came out not damaged. Honestly the process seems rough on clothing so I wouldn't recommend bringing any delicate clothing and just DIYing it yourself. read more

I bought a beautiful linen quilted duvet cover from Suay less than 5 years ago that is now so threadbare all over that I'm going to have to find a new one soon. This is despite gentle use and infrequent washing, with a gentle detergent. Unfortunately, I think the process that makes their linens so soft also deteriorates them. This was an expensive item that I was happy to pay for at the time, but I expected it to last much longer. I even emailed them over a year ago about the issue, and asked for material to patch it. They graciously obliged (for free), but the paper thinness is so widespread that I don't think it is worth the time and effort to keep doing so. We LOVE Suay! Just picked up our "new" bedding that was completely transformed by their community dye baths and we are so thrilled!! If you don't know about Suay, follow them on Instagram and check out their dye bath colors...they change them up about every 6 weeks. We brought in a duvet, Euro shams & a long pillow cover (all from Coyuchi) and they were dyed in the following colors - yolk, money & moonstruck. We have been using Suay for about 2 years and everything we bring in to dye, has been awesome! No need to buy new clothing, bedding and textiles when you can bring them in to Suay to find a new life and a new color. You will thank me (and them)!! read more

Love love love. There's nothing I love more than reuse and cool redefinition in the reuse. I started following Suay on IG a while back and when I realized I'd be in LA for their sample sale, it was a no-brainer. We arrived Saturday morning, 3-29-25 and walked into their ground floor shop. Immediately fell in love with lots of items, but decided to first go upstairs to the sample sale. I'm so glad I happened to wear form fitting track pants because it truly was simplest to just stand in place and try things on rather than wait for the 1 dressing room. Shirts, dresses, pants, jackets, all kinds of great stuff re-stitched, re-imagined, newly dyed, etc. The employees were helpful and the whole vibe was great. The Club Mend idea is also great - help to mend your own items and then of course the community dye program where you can choose colors from that month's palate and very affordably refresh your clothing item in a new color. I've really got to research if there's something like that here in the bay area...there must be, right? Anyway, I'll be back when I'm in the area for sure. read more

I have not been able to visit their new location.... But I did have a really positive experience sending items into their community dye bath service. I had grungy looking yellow cloth napkins that I sent in to have dyed. I choose a wonderful purple color and I am so pleased with the outcome. It is a bit pricey and you will be without your item for about a month...... but if you are trying to hold on to your old things longer it is worth it. read more

I finally made it to the Suay store after years of supporting and loving the products they make. All the staff was extremely helpful and friendly, the selection of items for purchase was on point. Not too overwhelming and easy to browse. Suay's mission is why I became a customer in 2020 and continue to be today. I even brought back an item I purchased in 2022 and they worked with me on getting a replacement, giving the old item a third life. Keeping textiles out of landfills and breathing new life into them is their expertise and I am grateful for businesses like this, that is why I will continue to support Suay and their employees. This is incredibly disappointing to write this as I was so excited to have this eco-friendly fashion alternative in DTLA, but after months of no response....i don't trust them. I had my colors done at the end of last year, so now I knew that I had a bunch of nice pieces that weren't the right color to really make me pop. Not wanting to throw out and restart my entire wardrobe I was thrilled to find out about the community dye bath with their monthly rotating colors. What a great way to transition my wardrobe over! I brought a few things in the first time, waited about a month maybe a bit less (depending on when you drop off) and got my pieces back in vibrant colors that were much better suited to me. I checked the website monthly for which colors they were using and brought more pieces in next month, still being pleased with the results. I shared the business with a bunch of friends, even the color expert I had used since they have a mail order business that people from all over can send their items in for a new lease on life. I loved their April colors and brought in a huge haul to dye- rag and bone jeans, Chan Luu blouses, and some dresses and tops that were not cheap. Crickets. I reached out in June to inquire and they informed me it would be mid to end of the month, which is longer for them but- ok. More crickets. Then they sent an email out with everyone's emails cc'd (way to keep the information of your customers secure) saying that due to the unrest and curfew in DTLA, their operations had been delayed but they will be reaching out with our completed orders next week. That makes sense (and screw the people snatching hardworking folks from LA county). It's been TWO weeks from that email and still nothing. I've emailed twice and called numerous times. You can't leave a voicemail and emails are going completely unanswered. I get that there are challenges right now, but you can't even respond to a concerned customer?! I don't know what to think, but after spending over $100 on the dye service not to mention the money on the actual pieces I'm pretty upset and won't be using or recommending them again. read more

I cannot stress this enough: do not trust this company with anything you care about. I signed up for one of their dye baths and was genuinely excited, I thought it would be a fun, creative experience. Instead, it turned into an absolute nightmare: * My items were marked "ready for pickup" back in July. * Because my car was totaled, I asked for shipping. After being ignored repeatedly, I finally got an invoice and paid for shipping on August 5. * After that, It took weeks of chasing them down to get tracking, and when my package finally arrived, my shirts were missing. * I emailed again and again, even wrote to multiple email addresses. I called. I literally had to beg for updates. Every message was ignored. * Finally, after I got a manager on the phone, I was told point-blank that they could offer me no help, no solution, no game plan, and no accountability whatsoever. Basically, "tough luck." This is beyond unprofessional... it's insulting. They lost a one-of-a-kind shirt that meant a lot to me, took my money, ignored my attempts to resolve it, and then openly admitted they had no intention of making it right. If you value your time, your money, or your belongings, stay far away from this company. There are plenty of businesses that care about their customers, stand behind their work, and operate with professionalism. This is not one of them. I have already filed a chargeback. I was skeptical at first, but my favorite pants had two giant bleach spots of them (that I subsequently made worse with a fabric marker) and I wanted to save them. Suay performed their magic in the community dye bath they came back looking brand new--actually, I prefer the Suay color to how they looked when I first bought them. I'm going to send in a dress next. I love having this option to refresh beloved fabric/clothing items. Also love all the good stuff Suay does for the community including fabric recycling. read more

Please put on your website that you're not accepting bedding. I brought in a light blanket and was told that I couldn't donate it, when it specifically says that this is an acceptable donation item. It was a complete waste of time to go there. Apparently this is due to receiving an influx from the LA fires. Just trying to do the right thing and not have it end up in the landfill. read more

I wanted to love this, really I did, but instead, I'm really, really disappointed with the dye bath. I can tell by the shredded care labels that my clothes went through the wringer and they look/feel that way. The cotton shirts are pilling and they've lost their structure and strength. They'll be useful as rags, but I'm throwing them out. A shame because I would have continued wearing them for at least another few seasons had I not sent them to Suay. The cotton pants may be salvageable, but not for wearing in public. Buyer and dyer beware. read more

I am a huge fan of Suay and all of their services and offerings! I love checking the latest dye bath colors to see how I can transform my clothes, stopping by their store to see what new garments they have made from unconventional fabrics and cuts, and hearing about the different pop ups and collabs they do. The clothes and homegoods you find here are so unique, and I get so many complements - I especially went crazy for their earth day tie dye specials and re-did a bunch of my blouses now that my workwear is more casual. I'm saddened to see any of the negative reviews on here - working in sustainability I know it is extremely hard to make profitable processes and garner investments for the types of services that Suay is trying to make more prevalent. The founders and the team working here are on a revolutionary path, and I'm excited to be a part of the process - knowing that they're trying out different models and offerings along the way. The dye bath does come with risks as it is a transformative process and done in a bulk manner to make it more sustainable (hence why it's called the community dye bath), but it's a more fun, more sustainable alternative to the clothes sitting at the bottom of my closet! read more

I dropped off a sweater back in January to have a small hole repaired and was told it would be 2-3 weeks. It's now May and there's been no update on the status of my sweater. I've emailed several times and different people have told me they will "get to the bottom of this" and "figure out what happened," but I just want to know if they're going to repair it and when or if they've lost it and don't want to admit it. So I'm now out my payment and my sweater. I appreciate the work they're doing for the community, but I do not recommend handing over anything you value. I love the idea behind this place but I have to be honest and say my experiences here (specifically with the repair services and dye bath) have left a lot to be desired, with my most recent experience guaranteeing I won't be back. I dropped off a duvet for the community dye bath in December and was told it would be ready in early February. On the last day of February, they emailed to let me know that the dye bath had "mostly" worked on my duvet, and that I should come in and see whether I was ok with the result or wanted to redo it. I went in that same day, saw that my duvet was not dyed in the middle at all, and elected to have it redone. I was told it would be "a week or two". Over the next 4 months I followed up several times both in person and via email. Each time they apologized for the delay and I was told they'd get back to me in X amount of time (which they never did). Finally at the end of June (6 months after I initially dropped it off), I was told that my duvet could not be found and "must have been damaged and thrown out". I did receive a refund. I also received a bit extra in the form of store credit to make up for my missing item, but as they don't sell duvets I'm not necessarily made whole, not to mention the time I had to spend chasing this resolution which I'll never get back. Incredibly frustrating to watch them announce new dye bath colors several times a month knowing that they're so behind/disorganized/whatever. My previous dye bath experiences have not been great either, with several items coming back to me damaged and most orders taking much longer than the stated time, so maybe it's on me for giving them another shot. At the end of the day, I support the vision but won't be wasting my time and money with them again, and would encourage anyone else to be cautious before trusting them with your things. read more
