Bad. We happened to be in Newberg and ventured here based on Yelp reviews. The place opens at 11:30 for lunch. We arrived at about 11:45. The hostess sat us, brusquely, and we were the ONLY customers in the place. And that was the extent of our visit. No one ever came to our table. Period. The waitress walked past us, pulled an apron out of some closet, put it on, and then disappeared. We sat for a few more minutes before deciding the experience could only go downhill. We got up to leave, walking past the same waitress who was just standing at the bar. She saw us leave and said....nothing. Really? Are you so busy that you'd prefer not to wait on guests at 11:45 on a Monday? Ok. You got your wish. Resume staring at the wall. Btw: as an aside, I am so confused how other Yelpers can think the decor is in any way cool or trendy. The decor SUCKS. Faux finishing, cheap gauzy fabric, dusty wine bottles, dentist office art. Bleh! Boo! No thank you, sir! I guess my husband and I are the only people who've ever had a bad experience here, or at least the only folks on Yelp to admit it? Wait - it wasn't just a bad experience - it was horrible. It was so bad my husband and I got into a huge fight afterwards because we were so cranky. Making a reservation was easy for a weekend evening over Memorial Day weekend. The night of, we decided we wanted to head over early so we called to see if we could come in earlier. We called the restaurant several times over the course of about half an hour...and it just rang and rang and rang. Finally we just gave up and drove over. When we walked in, no one greeted us. The servers were mad-dashing in and out of the kitchen, the phone was ringing off the hook, and we were completely ignored for five minutes after we arrived. It's not like folks couldn't see us - the hostess stand is between the kitchen and the dining room. Finally, the hostess (owner?) saw us and brusquely asked us if we needed help. Um, yeah. Reservation for two. We're early. I might add the place was PACKED...and LOUD. There was an incredibly large (~ 20 people) party in the back of the restaurant, which I thought was odd since the place isn't that big. That group definitely took over the place. Well, guess where we were seated? It was like a bad game of Diner Dash. You don't EVER sit the couple next to the party of 20. EVER. Oh wait, you do if there's no place else to put them. Sigh. If I knew then what I know now... When we were seated we were given our menus, and then left to our own devices for about twenty minutes. I'm not kidding. We did get water, but no one came by to say hello or ask if we wanted a drink...and I noticed that other tables around us seemed devoid of any food. Not good. Finally our waitress came over and we placed our orders. My husband ordered the short ribs, and I ordered the duck cassoulet. I'd read here on Yelp (and the menu) that we had our choice of a couple of soups but we weren't asked what we wanted. As quickly as she showed up, she was gone. After about a half-hour we got our salads. They were dropped off...no explanation of what they were...nothing. It was a couple pieces of endive with some goat cheese, walnuts, pear tomatoes, and a nice vinaigrette. It was actually pretty good...I think I was just turned off by the DIY aspect of deciphering what it was. For the record, it was impossible to flag down a server. There were only three and they were covering about 15 tables...including the behemoth party next to us. The soup...again, I have no idea what it was but it tasted like mushrooms, was also good. It was dumped off at our table with no explanation...but it was nice to see that as we were getting our soup, so were the people around us who had clearly been there longer than us. My husband liked his short ribs entree but didn't think it was anything exceptional. Unfortunately, my duck was dry and underseasoned, and the cassoulet was too salty. The cassoulet also came in this huge crock - it was enough for probably three people. I felt bad for the party of four older folks behind us, who were there for a birthday...the restaurant "lost" their dessert order. That prompted us to take a pass on dessert. Besides, at that point we just wanted to get the hell out. At one point our server did manage to see how annoyed we were (was hard for us to talk given the noise level), and told us that the large party showed up 45 minutes late and that totally threw everything in the place off. Wow. Bummer, but not my problem. Why didn't we leave, when things were obviously going so wrong? It was one of only a couple "romantic" dinners we had during the trip, and I didn't want to ruin it for my husband...and vice-versa. After a lengthy "discussion" afterwards, we both will speak up more vehemently rather than suffer through a crappy meal and crappy service. I think what disappointed me the most about Subterra's service that night and total mishandling of all of the diners was the complete lack of acknowledgement about what was going on. I guess if you just pretend like you don't notice food is coming out at a snail's pace and orders are being lost, then your customers won't either. Out of all the places in Newberg, this dud was my choice. The whole "white tablecloth" cache just kills me. I can put a white tablecloth on my dining room table...if I serve Chef Boyardee Ravioli though straight from the can, the presence of a tablecloth doesn't make it fine dining. This place gets two stars because the salad and soup were good...but if that's all we wanted, we could've gone to Sizzler. Are Sizzlers still around? read more

My husband and I were looking for a place to eat before our drive back to Tillamook one night and decided on Subterra based on Yelp reviews. This is a great little semi-hidden restaurant. We were seated immediately and our server was very attentive and courteous. The only complaint I have is that he didn't really know anything about wine, so when I asked him if my choice of Cabernet would be a good one for my meal selection, he told me he had no idea. Hmm. They were offering two selections of soup that evening--cuban black bean and split pea with ham. Both were very good and hit the spot on the cold evening. We also each got a house salad with our meal which included endive and hazelnuts (always a plus!). What I like most about this restaurant is that each entree is served with soup and salad, making them very economical choices if you think about it. I had the German style short rib of beef with spaetzle and braised red cabbage. This was a delicious combination, although the short rib was just slightly overcooked. My husband got the Adult Mac and Cheese BLT minus the bacon. Now this was something I definitely could get behind. I could smell it from across the table and would definitely order it the next time we go again. In response to the decor comments...I thought the setting was lovely, calm, and serene, and have never seen decorations like that in a strip mall. I think they did very well with the space, and I never once noticed that there weren't any windows. In my opinion, that's a pretty amazing feat given that they are located in what could be considered a basement. Definitely not worthy of a complaint in my book. read more

Came here on a weekday evening in Summer 2011. We found Subterra based on its high Yelp reviews after a day of wine-tasting. It was hard to decide whether to give Subterra 1 or 2 stars, but it seems that 1 star is appropriate given that it fell so far below our expectations. Apparently the restaurant is significantly understaffed during the first half of the week, as there were only two servers, and (as related by the waitstaff) a limited kitchen staff. It took a long time for the server to take our order, and during the course of our meal our contact with the server was meager infrequent. It was also our eventual understanding that the main chef was not working that night. E. got a chicken dish (which is apparently no longer on the menu). And J. got the sweet potato agnolotti. The chicken was so dry as to be inedible (we sent it back), and the agnolotti were mediocre at best. Fortunately the server comped the chicken dish, but overall the service and food quality were a real damper to an otherwise extraordinary visit to the Willamette Valley. Maybe Subterra is much better during the weekend or the later part of the week, but please be advised that Mon-Weds is definitely a bad time to go. read more

As local residents of Newberg we were really excited to have our christmas dinner at Subterra this year. There were only 4 of us and we usually go to the Jory at the Alison Hotel or our other favorite, Painted Lady, but this time we decided to try Subterra. We arrived around 7 and there were only 2 other tables of guests, the atmosphere was great....but thats about all that was great that night. We ordered the appetizers, pate and smoked salmon dip. Both were OK. First came the soups. Mushroom was good, the black bean soup however was terrible. It was like someone just opened a can of black beans, heated it up and poured it in the bowl. The salads were not very good at all, the lettuce as soggy and it was just thrown on the plate, i had no clue what kind of salad it was since no one told us. Last came the main course....we all ordered something different so one had to be good right? House made macaroni and cheese, how can you screw that up?? Well they did, did they cook it 3 days ago and just heat it up for tonight? Encrusted halibut- not edible. It smelled pungent and tasted tangy...i truely think the fish was bad. Steak with jalapeno cream sauce- again horrible. The sauce was terrible tasting. I cant believe they are actually serving this food. Short ribs?? is that what that was? honestly after the 3 others tried it and told me how bad it was i didnt even bother. We were all so dissappointed. I would never go back again. Once we finished our food and desert we were finishing up our wine and the waitress came and said can you guys move to the bar there has been someone waiting for your table. Well......if it didnt take her forever to take our order maybe we wouldnt have been there for over 2 hours! Stopped in for lunch and was totally impressed with their Newberger hamburger, which delivered a flavor explosion with every bite. This hamburger is made of ground beef that is blended with bacon and short rib. It comes well accompanied with garnishes, their own ketchup and blue cheese. Dessert was pineapple foster with coconut ice cream. Imagine banana foster with a substitution of fresh grilled pineapple in place of the bananas. Very yummy! read more

My family and I loved this place when we went for dinner a few nights ago on a family vacation. We are all foodies, and love to eat good quality food so we tried many of the "fine dining" experiences that Newberg had to offer. Subterra stood out because the quality of the food spoke for itself without a pretentious waitstaff and ambience. This is a place to come with family or a date and enjoy good food, quality service, and a value. Our entrees all came with soup and salad, but were still only around 25 dollars each. The waiter was so nice. We asked him about the famous black bean soup, and he went back to the kitchen to find out all of the ingredients so we could try to make it at home. I was surprised that this place was not more crowded. I thought that the food was great, and you get a great experience for your money here. read more

Subterra, accessible via a curving flight of stairs descending to a windowless, basement dining room, lives up to its namesake literally and figuratively. The food, the ambiance, the service were a bit underwhelming, subpar. They certainly give it the old college try, and to be fair, there were moments that elevated the experience. The service, while not well informed or at all prepared to discuss the finer points of the menu, was friendly and amicable. I can forgive the waitress for not knowing what braised radicchio was and confusing linguica with linguine when she described the ingredients in the Brazilian bean soup but her timing and simultaneously obtrusive and neglectful service could use some improvement. She was certainly pleasant and attentive she just needs to learn the menu and not appear off guard when questioned about basic ingredients. Also bringing the correct order would also have been a nice touch. I elected to order small bites and of the two pork selections on offer I received the one I didn't order. In her defense they were similar dishes one a deconstructed pork slider and the other crispy pork belly. I ordered pork belly and received pulled pork plates in quarter sized 3/4 inch dollops. The flavors were good, the plating was decent, the selections varied enough to provide decent choices just not very well curated. The wine list received more attention and given the restaurant brands itself as a literal wine cellar that makes sense. By and large most of the food felt like a slightly elevated happy hour at a place you only go to because you know you'll always be able to get a table and they have that one 2014 Pinot you can't find at Fred Meyer any longer. One of the highlight of the evening was the "meet the vintner" event they host on the first Friday of every month. Subterra highlights a local winery with the actual vintner from said winery on site to briefly discuss the wines they produce while offering samples of their wine. This was a fun, entirely unexpected, experience and is certainly part of what lends Subterra its charm. Given its location in Oregon's premier wine region this event is imaginative and educational. If they can find a way to add some complexity and to the menu and properly train their wait staff this restaurant has the potential for greatness. I would be far less generous if dinner for 3 wasn't an easy to digest $140, to be sure their pricing was one of the highlights. I'm unclear if that is should be taken as a compliment or an admonishment I'll leave it up to you to decide. If you are looking for dinner in Newberg and don't want to shell out the big bucks for Jory at the Allison, Subterra isn't a bad choice it very well might be the second best dinner one can find in Newberg. read more

Went here with some friends on a Saturday night. You would never see this place just driving by unless you questioned why so many cars were parked together in the lot right off 99. The GOOD: Wait service was tremendous, included dinner salad was delicious, and included black bean soup was tasty. The setting is upscale and comfortable. One of our party had adult mac and cheese...tops. The other three dinners for some reason seemed to be overly salty, but still tasty. Not so GOOD: We arrived at 6:40 for a 7 p.m. reservation and were told we would have to wait because if we were seated now the cooks would be mad at the hostess as their "routine" would be off. A simple "we are preparing your table and will have you seated in a few minutes" would have sufficed as she did make it feel like we were intruding. This does not impact my dining, but the bathrooms were gross....toilet did not flush well, no towels in dispenser...just sitting on the on toilet with random wetness (pretended this was water and not the other yellow liquid). Overall, I was certainly impressed and would certainly go back to try new menu items when they appear. I would probably not make a special trip again to Newberg, but would definitely eat there again if passing through. Certainly has good potential....just not quite there yet. read more

High quality dinning! Excellent Bar service with fresh ingredients and presentation. We were very surprised and pleased with our entire experience. I think this was one of the rare times I didn't use salt or pepper and the flavor so were outstanding. We went with another couple and we pretty much sampled everything. While good food is hard to come by in the Willamette Valley, we were pleasantly surprised to find Subterra in Newberg. Sure, it's in a "basement" of a "strip mall", but it is done up nice and cozy. We've had it with the expensive views, overpriced spa food and waiter staff that were trained in the Bronx. Our server/bartender, Lisa, made a specialty cocktail, not on the menu, and it was spot on. The three course meal we both had, pork shoulder for my wife and duck breast for me was very tasty and comforting on a cool evening. The only disappointment was that the Bananas Foster was unavailable, that being said, we forgot our disappoint once we tasted their home made ice cream. Far better than 50 Licks or Salt and Straw. Next time we find ourselves in the Willamette Valley, we will surely return to Subterra. Oh, their wine list and knowledge of the local wines was impressive. read more

In a region filled with its share of unique and wonderful dining options, we chose to return to Subterra a second night (we were only here for three nights); that's how wonderful our experience was. The service we received was incredible; a total team effort where no one missed a beat. Their recommendations for food and wine based on our experiences during our trip were completely on point. The primavera pesto risotto was phenomenal and would have been the best dish of the night...had we not ordered the halibut special. The halibut was encased in thinly sliced potatoes and served with zucchini, mashed potatoes and a pinot noir based sauce that brought us back to the wonderful experiences we had tasting many of the superb wines of Oregon. Came in early afternoon. Seemed liked maybe they weren't expecting people for lunch. Only one server doing the best she could, but definitely not sufficient for the crowd. VERY slow service and dishes coming out extremely slow. Menu looks good, but can't comment on taste as we are still waiting 30 minutes after ordering for our food - which is just a sandwich and a "small plate"! Update after food: After 45 minutes food arrived. I had the butternut risotto and "begged" to have them add chicken - I guess they were okay accommodating me because we waited so long. It was very filling and sweet - good texture, but not really great if your looking for a balanced main dish. My husband got the Cuban sandwich which was okay. Not much meat and wasn't very warm - also not grilled like you'd expect for a Cuban. We listened as the server told one table they could only get bread for lunch if there were leftovers from last night as they make it fresh everyday - these people were asking for bread because they were waiting forever for their food, too. Also, the server kept telling different tables about items/ingredients they just ran out of - it was a Saturday at 1pm - how are you running out already??? After the super long wait for service, the cold temperature inside, and food being just okay (at least not making up for everything else), we won't be back. What a gem this restaurant is! Only 4 month in business, but this place has definitely a winning recipe. The ambiance is great, very modern and chique, but not overdone. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. Our waitress Rachel was great and had great insight on local wines. Last but not least, the food was fabulous. I love this place MOSTLY because the food is fresh and wonderful but also because the quality is consistent. no horrible surprises for a business lunch that's impromptu. Nice wine options and always lovely salads. I have tried the entire lunch menu...and it's all good. My kids make fun of me because I love their hamburger. Go figure! The restaurant wouldn't serve us at the bar, then when we were finally seated, said she would need to ask her manager if we could be served a bottle of wine, apparently having a Southern accent and smiling/laughing with your friends means you are too intoxicated to enjoy an overpriced meal at this establishment. Absolutely wonderful. The chef has wonderful execution and knows what he's doing. The halibut was delicious. Perfectly cooked and flavorful. The gnocchi was just a great. It was recently purchased by new owners (we had the pleasure of a quick meet and they were kind and down to earth, hard working people-always a plus). They've done a stellar job at bringing the space into its own. Modern and tastefully updated. Definitely worth your time abs money. read more

We recently came out to the Willamette valley for our honeymoon, and dined at subterra at the recommendation of the owner of our B'n B. The food and wine was incredible, and only surpassed by the wonderful staff. Out meals were prefaced with some delicious home baked bread, a savory black bean soup and butternut squash soup, and a salad that was topped with beets, oranges, feta, and hazelnuts. My husband had the lamb shank while I had the scallops - the presentation was perfect, and not overdone. We also enjoyed a few glasses of Pinot Noirs from wineries in the region that were a great way to kick off our winery tour planning for the next day. Mo, our waitress, and Heidi, the assistant manager, were friendly, fun, and very knowledgeable about the food and the local wines. We ended up chatting with them for an hour while we tried to find an uber or taxi back to our place. Mo went above and beyond to ensure we got home safely. read more

I've eaten here twice now at this wine country restaurant and both times it's been great. Long review follows, but it's because the overall experience was so darn positive with such good energy. Stopping here for dinner was definitely a great way to shake off the drizzly winter blues! Ambience: It's located in a funky triangle shop area right off Highway 99. You go down a few steps to enter, it's down a level from the street. Despite that, it's cozy and warm and comfy feeling, with warm yellow and amber paint colors and a striking vineyard mural along the back wall. Not a perfect space, being underground, but they've done awesome with what it is I think. Food: I can't remember what I ate at the first meal as it was a while ago but I remember being quite happy. I just ate there Thursday at their special community-style international-themed meal. It was "Havana Night" and the Cuban food was awesome. My husband and I are fans of Cuban food, having both lived in Florida (like the owner & chef of the restaurant, coincidentally!). I had their mojitos, one of my favorite drinks, which were fabulous. Totally recommend them. I also especially recommend the first course, a crazy good fusion style appetizer of "Mojo Pork Cocktails - Mash of Butternut Squash Topped with Mojo Marinated Pork, Parsley Onion Gremolata, and a Wedge of Lime" - they've added it to the menu because all us guests that night raved so about it so there's the full description. Hungry yet? Then it was ham croquettes (good but not as delicious as the mojo pork butternut dish), and as main course vieja ropa beef stew with rice and black beans and chopped green onions and fried plantains (loved all these), followed up by flan for desert. I was too roly poly at that point to even finish my flan, which is wrong because I adore flan and it was very good. Staff: The community style aspect was also great, even though I am a total introvert, it was clear that many of the folk at the meal had caught on to the special weekly themed meal before us and this was their second or third time back. The other 5-6 guests at our table were fun & friendly, the chef and the owner came out and told us about the dishes before each course, and the whole thing was so friendly and jocular and professional that it was great. read more

Ended up here while taking the scenic route out of Portland to try and avoid I-5 south traffic. Really delicious stuff. They had a shrimp and polenta dish with jalapeño and cheddar that killed, one of the better shrimp dishes I've had, period. Also loved the butternut squash risotto, and the smoked pork with speatzel was also fabulous. Great Pinot by the glass, lovely atmosphere...just a fantastic find. Highly recommend! read more

This is one of my favorites in Yamhill County, especially in Newberg! I really enjoy their happy hour! They always have good wine on special (a red and white) and great appetizers. I will say that I've notice the happy hour menu has perhaps slimmed down in options in the last six months. But the offerings that are currently available are great. I particularly like the beef skewers and salmon spread. I happened to be at Subterra last night and I tried the creme brulee, it was also scrumptous! Plus the setting is fun. At first it feels a bit mysterious as you descend to an basement restaurant. Then you are greeted with an intimate and warm setting that is perfect for a girls night out or a special dinner with that perfect person. I haven't had a full dinner here yet, but I will be sure to review again when I do! read more

This place is amazing. My husband and I came here for date night and weren't expecting much. It was our first time and are pretty picky about our food. From start to finish everything was delicious. My husband got the pork and I got the beef. We spent the majority of the meal trying to remember a time we've had a better steak. In our almost 70 combined years, we couldn't come up with one. We had a lovely evening celebrating our Bruins Athlete & Grandma's Birthday tonight. We shared a couple of small plates for the table, wine, cider, cocktails & sodas, soup, salad & bread.... and then the main courses: halibut, beef shoulder, duck, & scallops were all delicious. Somehow we still had room for dessert & coffee. Our server Ryan took excellent care of us while making us laugh. We'll be looking for something else to celebrate soon! read more

We came here for years before it changed owners. Then it was good and the decor was a little dated but warm and inviting. The new decor is sterile like a hospital and the atmosphere was just as cold and uninviting. We had made reservations but showed up early. They seated the three of us in a room where two other small groups were seated. The staff acted as if they were too busy to wait on us or even talk to us. Mind you the rest of the restaurant was completely empty except two people sitting at the bar. The list of wine by the bottle was good, but for a restaurant being in wine country the by the glass wine list was pathetic. After a day of wine tasting the last thing you want is a full bottle of wine. When I did order a glass of wine they just brought out a single serving carafe and poured it into a rolled edge glass that was already on the table. I had to ask for the appropriate glass which they did bring out. The food was decent but both my husband and I ended up with our tummy's not very happy. We will not return. read more
