What a fabulous place! We ended up making a reservation for dinner, after scouring the websites for great dinners... But this one was EXCEPTIONAL!! And I am normally a very tough grader. Melissa took such good care of us! The restaurant decor was a bit nondescript, but the food and the service was WOW!! I had the shrimp appetizer, which was incredible with distinct flavors, and prepared perfectly. Then I had the NY strip with chimichuri sauce, truffle fries, and broccolini. The plate was devoured, and each item was better than the other. Each with wonderful taste. The strip was cooked perfectly, between medium and medium rare. Normally I end up sending my steak back, to cook it a bit more. But Melissa listened to me and served me with the most delicious meal! Kudos to the chef!! read more

We had really mixed impressions of this place. We arrived for lunch and the place was empty other than a group of six. The lone server greeted us and asked if we had reservations. We said no. He then had us sit at the chairs by the door for ten minutes while he "prepared a table". Once we were seated, the party of six left. The server was now very friendly, recommended a nice pinot noir, and took our orders. When he served up our wine he placed napkins atop the glasses because of the fruit flies. Sure enough, within a few moments, we each had four or five flies on our napkins and there were more on the wall next to us just waiting to dive in. We decided to share the spicy cauliflower soup, the meat pizza, and the burger. The first two tasted fine, but the burger was seriously burnt. I mean, we know grilled or blackened, and this was neither. We quietly pointed it out to our server because a group of six had just been seated. He said the chef would make another. He later came by to pick up the burger to show the chef. After that, all friendliness vanished. We thanked him for taking care of the burger and asked him to thank the chef for us. We just got a curt nod. So, suggestions for the future? (1) Drop any sort of pretension about reservations when you know you have none in the book and the restaurant is virtually empty -- It just takes away from the dining experience (2) Get rid of the flies -- While they may be typical in a winery during crush, they do not belong inside a fine dining restaurant. read more

Seriously good food and vibe....even 8 months later! We had no idea they offer a Happy Hour, that was a nice surprise when we walked in for dinner and wine. Also nice to see they were busy and doing well. We sat at the bar and ordered the red of the day. Service was top notch this time, unlike the last time we were in. The beef skewers were recommended by our server, but I was not impressed- they tasted a bit over done. The croquettes were awesome though! It's nice to see Newberg has a place for Happy Hour that is a step up from the usual "chain" restraunt. I hope Subterra stays around, they have a good thing here. read more

I have been here a few times for solo happy hour when my husband is out of town. Most recently I met a friend for lunch. We split two of the sandwiches the turkey and the croque monsieur. Both were great. The service was attentive and I enjoyed my meal. One of these days I will make it back for dinner. read more

We really had a great meal. Excellent service. For four of us, we had three small plates, and two entrées. And that was more than enough. Halibut was wrapped up a Thin potato crisp; it was really good, as well as the Columbia River salmon. Perfectly cooked, with a really good purple mashed potatoes. For the small plates we have the hummus, asparagus, and a baked brie. $200 incl tip for an excellent meal, bottle of wine and 3 drinks for 4 people. Cool vibe and ambiance in this place! We stopped for lunch after golfing in the area, but I can see where this could be a romantic spot if you came back at night. The bar wasn't that large and seemed to be used for wine tastings as well, so not sure how the bar area would work at night.... Hubby had a Bloody Mary and said it was really good. I had the fish tacos which were really light and fresh and made for a great lunch. They used a lot of greens, which gave it a nice crunch. Hubby had the Cuban sandwich and enjoyed it. The portion sizes were plenty without being too much and the prices were reasonable. The food was excellent and well worth a visit! read more

Many restaurants have made me cry because they cannot serve me and I have to leave due to my multiple food allergies. Upon arrival, SubTerra's chef and staff handed me a personalized menu that only had foods I could eat. I got choice! I got empanadas! A superb salad! And the Rockfish entree was outstanding. Most of the time restaurants just take away the items from my plate that I cannot eat leaving me with tasteless steamed veggies and a dry piece of meat. Not at SubTerra. They gave me more, way more. They were able to modify their offerings and in some cases, no modifications were necessary. It was exciting. They made me cry because I felt happy, full, delighted, and my only regret is that I cannot scream it from the mountaintops loud enough. I WILL be back and this time, I'll bring friends. read more

Love the food and vibe of this place. It's romantic, cozy, and rustic. The menu always looks amazing and I have had some wonderful memories eating there with my family. The food never disappoints. I imagine that Subterra was that one place in Newberg that the locals of kept busy on Valentines Day in the early 80s. I don't doubt it has had its heyday but they really need to upgrade the menu (and the decor) as it still seems it is hanging onto that time when there wan't any competition in the area. Something tells me that its the owners that are holding back the Chef because there are dishes on there that are really great. Until the owners give this awesome chef the freedom he needs to make this place outstanding again, they might as well name the place Subpar Restaurant. read more

I'll give one star for the service. Our server was sweet. The food and drinks-- terrible! We couldn't really finish anything here and left hungry. The bread was the only edible part. Do not come here. Yelp steered us wrong. Go to Jory or Recipe Part Deux instead and spend your money- especially if you're celebrating something special. Our favorite place to eat in Newberg. Dinner entrees include soup and salad, so you get a lot for price. Plus it is delicious. We have eaten at Subterra at least a half dozen times of the past couple years (anytime we are in Newberg). I have never had a bad meal or experience. Meals are full of dynamic flavors. Most dishes can be made gluten free and the wait staff is very knowledgeable about gluten free/celiac concerns. Save room for dessert - the bananas foster is amazing. read more

A lovely find in Newberg. The restaurant is definitely in a cellar, which makes for a charming ambience. It's a place I would recommend for a small group or an intimate date night. Service here is prompt and attentive. Maybe too attentive. When you're actively engaged in conversation with your table mates, a server should simply stay nearby, but not hang at the table waiting for you to finish your conversation . Food was solid. I wouldn't call it extraordinarily creative, but it's solidly prepared and tasty. Overall, a great little restaurant in Newberg that you should check out. read more

Oh my... This is a wonderful place in Oregon wine country. We rode the motorcycle across the beautiful landscape and stopped here for lunch. The crispy pork belly is INSANE. Also had the special heirloom tomato salad which was so fresh and yummy, as well as the turkey sandwich - one of the best o have ever had. The beef stew was also truly amazing. Everything is made from scratch and the ingredients are super fresh. They also have an amazing wine selection (duh). Please try this place, you won't regret it! read more

Based on good reviews we tried this place out since we are in wine country. But based on our experience they should change the name to subpar. Made reservations a week ago online Pretty easy. Used Lyft to get to the restaurant and walk in. Greeted and ask if we have reservations and state that we do. Funny to ask if we have a reservation, since the place never even got close to being full . Our server was awful She finally came to the table and brought water. It was around 5 minutes. Not long, but when there are 5 tables seated and 4 wait staff.... hmmm . She lazily filled our water and then removed the bootle since it was empty. When I asked for more water, she said she thought it was odd that there wasn't a water bootle on our table. SHE TOOK IT AWAY! Even know this is wine country, its my birthday weekend so we order martinis. Gray Goose dirty and a Sapphire up with olives. On the first try we get a Goose that is not dirty and a martini with a twist??? When did we say twist. Send it back. Girlfriend says she will drink her drink, and on the stick instead of olives, there is an olive, an onion, a grape and a mystery item that she quickly spit out. Round 2 for me and its a dirty martini with olives, again not what I wanted. Explained to the waitress: sapphire, ice, shake, add olives. I think the bartender shook the juniper berries right out of the gin, it was so watery Entrees are ordered: Short ribs and a seafood stew. Did I tell you the meal comes with soup and salad too? Tonights choice was black-bean or butternut squash soup. Black-bean was good and heard the butternut was very good from my girlfriend. Ok we are getting better. Then the mystery salad arrives. We have no idea what it is. Find out irs mixed greens, raspberry vinaigrette, feta, and I think hazelnuts. What if I have a nut allergy? What is If dont like raspberry? Is that a beet too? Entrees arrive. Short ribs had the taste of pot roast. Don't get me wrong, I love pot roast, but the flavor was a not what Im used to with short ribs. Seafood stew was decent. Lots of clams, fish, a few shrimp. Either mussels or squid would have rounded out the meal. Nice little heat! Since its my birthday they gave me an option for desert. Creme bruelle please! Nice sugar crust, but the custard was loose and runny and was room temp. It took 10 minutes to get our drinks when the place was basically empty. My appetizer was the arugula salad with burratta which was very good but the menu says it comes with a duck egg. No duck egg. I had the pork ossobucco. Very salty with a smoky taste which as odd. My brother-in-law had the rockfish which was the smallest piece of fish I've ever seen. It came with crispy polenta. No. Crispy polenta was on his plate. We asked why and the owner's wife said she would ask her husband (the chef). Their answer was the menu changes. Well then change your menu to reflect that ! It was basically an appetizer passed off as a dinner. Our waiter was terrible too. He brings three out of four apps and I sat there waiting for mine. Mine came after everyone else finished theirs. To tell us they would not serve us they spoke to the white people. They then referred us to a place with "plenty of room" which turned out to be a tiny hole in the wall with 4 tops. Very pleasant dining experience with my spouse. The bone marrow was beyond rich and flavorful. Beet salad nicely balanced by yogurt and mint. Duck breast with strawberry / port a light and tasty twist on a classic. Service friendly and attentive despite being slightly shorthanded. SubTerra is well named. It's on the lower level of an older retail center and it's easy to miss from the street. But once inside, it is impressive in every respect. Tables are well speared, making conversation easy. The menu leans Italian yet is sufficiently diverse for everyone. Every dish we had was terrific, as was service. read more

We had house-made smoked salmon spread for starts, a shrimp & white bean salad and a BLT macaroni & cheese for second course. Glass of Southern WV rose, recc by server, to accompany. She asked our palette and picked a wine for us, on Rose Day, that was superb. Salmon spread is salmon, not cream cheese. Delicious. Shrimp were large, succulent, deftly seasoned & grilled. The m&c was bubbling from the broiler, topped with grilled arugula & tomatoes Interesting wine list, a lot of new and OR boutique wineries (e.g. Bryn Mawr, Choutte -our rose). Many producers with whom we're not familiar (there are LOTS of new labels!) and we're local wine peeps. They have a bar so if someone in the group isn't a winer, there're beer / spirits. Wow you really knocked it out of the park for us Friday night! Again I should say. Loved the attentive server. She had perfect timing as to when to return to our table to check on us. I had the steak shoulder and my husband had braised rib dinner. The soups and salads were really tasty and fresh. Great wine selection. The restaurant was inviting, clean and romantic. This place has been great for many years......this last visit was HORRID!!! The food was good, Seafood Zeuzela was yummy! Soups were tasty, salad was...well, SALAD! Now for the horrible part...the service!!! Or should I say lack of service!! The waitress on Friday night couldn't get any more ruder then she was. She was just horrid!!! Terrible service when she was around then half way through the dinner she disappeared!! She had the hostess finish off the meal service for us. This place was slow on Friday night. It took the waitress 20+ minutes just to bring a soda to the table. There are way too many great places with fantastic service to go to then to put up with these horrible servers at Subterra.... Friends and fellow Yelpers! It was Monday December 16th 2013 and I'm out with my lovely wife and visiting good friends that live in the middle of Willamette Valley "wine country" in Newberg, Oregon, famous for the Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and other fantastic wines and breath taking wineries. But equally as good, are some of the amazing restaurants that spot the landscape in the valley and as you can imagine they all pair well with your favorite wines. The restaurant I frequent for dinner while I'm out and about winery hopping in the Northern section of the Willamette Valley is Subterra "A Wine Cellar Restaurant" with the unique ambience that gives you that continued winery experience. The staircase for the Subterra literary was dug out of the side of the overall complex in which it resides, which makes for a really unique entrance into the restaurant. The restaurant is quaint with wonderfully painted landscapes of the Willamette Valley that line the interior of the dining room, which gives you that seated outdoor feeling. It has a small bar with great cocktails and best of all a great selection of wines from up and down the Valley. The food is excellent with a variety of small plates and entrees ranging from pork shoulder, to scallops. Every entrée that I've had was excellent. So if you are a red wine drinker or your favorite is white, Subterra will have something that will hit the spot for you. Bad. We happened to be in Newberg and ventured here based on Yelp reviews. The place opens at 11:30 for lunch. We arrived at about 11:45. The hostess sat us, brusquely, and we were the ONLY customers in the place. And that was the extent of our visit. No one ever came to our table. Period. The waitress walked past us, pulled an apron out of some closet, put it on, and then disappeared. We sat for a few more minutes before deciding the experience could only go downhill. We got up to leave, walking past the same waitress who was just standing at the bar. She saw us leave and said....nothing. Really? Are you so busy that you'd prefer not to wait on guests at 11:45 on a Monday? Ok. You got your wish. Resume staring at the wall. Btw: as an aside, I am so confused how other Yelpers can think the decor is in any way cool or trendy. The decor SUCKS. Faux finishing, cheap gauzy fabric, dusty wine bottles, dentist office art. My husband surprised me for my birthday with drinks at happy hour here followed by a delicious dinner. I had the seafood dinner and he had the beef with chimchurri. Both were delicious. They also came with a soup, salad and bread. My only reason for 4 stars is the wait between the soup and the salad was about 40 minutes. It did start to get busy after happy hour though. But wasn't expecting that long of a wait. The happy hour prices are great but we won't do dinner on a regular basis as most dishes are $40. (Ps you get a free dessert of your choice on yourbirthday. Bleh! Boo! No thank you, sir! I guess my husband and I are the only people who've ever had a bad experience here, or at least the only folks on Yelp to admit it? Wait - it wasn't just a bad experience - it was horrible. It was so bad my husband and I got into a huge fight afterwards because we were so cranky. Making a reservation was easy for a weekend evening over Memorial Day weekend. The night of, we decided we wanted to head over early so we called to see if we could come in earlier. We called the restaurant several times over the course of about half an hour...and it just rang and rang and rang. Finally we just gave up and drove over. When we walked in, no one greeted us. The servers were mad-dashing in and out of the kitchen, the phone was ringing off the hook, and we were completely ignored for five minutes after we arrived. It's not like folks couldn't see us - the hostess stand is between the kitchen and the dining room. Finally, the hostess (owner?) saw us and brusquely asked us if we needed help. Um, yeah. Reservation for two. We're early. I might add the place was PACKED...and LOUD. There was an incredibly large (~ 20 people) party in the back of the restaurant, which I thought was odd since the place isn't that big. That group definitely took over the place. Well, guess where we were seated? It was like a bad game of Diner Dash. You don't EVER sit the couple next to the party of 20. EVER. Oh wait, you do if there's no place else to put them. Sigh. If I knew then what I know now... When we were seated we were given our menus, and then left to our own devices for about twenty minutes. I'm not kidding. We did get water, but no one came by to say hello or ask if we wanted a drink...and I noticed that other tables around us seemed devoid of any food. Not good. Finally our waitress came over and we placed our orders. My husband ordered the short ribs, and I ordered the duck cassoulet. I'd read here on Yelp (and the menu) that we had our choice of a couple of soups but we weren't asked what we wanted. As quickly as she showed up, she was gone. After about a half-hour we got our salads. They were dropped off...no explanation of what they were...nothing. It was a couple pieces of endive with some goat cheese, walnuts, pear tomatoes, and a nice vinaigrette. It was actually pretty good...I think I was just turned off by the DIY aspect of deciphering what it was. For the record, it was impossible to flag down a server. There were only three and they were covering about 15 tables...including the behemoth party next to us. The soup...again, I have no idea what it was but it tasted like mushrooms, was also good. It was dumped off at our table with no explanation...but it was nice to see that as we were getting our soup, so were the people around us who had clearly been there longer than us. My husband liked his short ribs entree but didn't think it was anything exceptional. Unfortunately, my duck was dry and underseasoned, and the cassoulet was too salty. The cassoulet also came in this huge crock - it was enough for probably three people. I felt bad for the party of four older folks behind us, who were there for a birthday...the restaurant "lost" their dessert order. That prompted us to take a pass on dessert. Besides, at that point we just wanted to get the hell out. At one point our server did manage to see how annoyed we were (was hard for us to talk given the noise level), and told us that the large party showed up 45 minutes late and that totally threw everything in the place off. Wow. Bummer, but not my problem. Why didn't we leave, when things were obviously going so wrong? It was one of only a couple "romantic" dinners we had during the trip, and I didn't want to ruin it for my husband...and vice-versa. After a lengthy "discussion" afterwards, we both will speak up more vehemently rather than suffer through a crappy meal and crappy service. I think what disappointed me the most about Subterra's service that night and total mishandling of all of the diners was the complete lack of acknowledgement about what was going on. I guess if you just pretend like you don't notice food is coming out at a snail's pace and orders are being lost, then your customers won't either. Out of all the places in Newberg, this dud was my choice. The whole "white tablecloth" cache just kills me. I can put a white tablecloth on my dining room table...if I serve Chef Boyardee Ravioli though straight from the can, the presence of a tablecloth doesn't make it fine dining. This place gets two stars because the salad and soup were good...but if that's all we wanted, we could've gone to Sizzler. Are Sizzlers still around? read more

My husband and I were looking for a place to eat before our drive back to Tillamook one night and decided on Subterra based on Yelp reviews. This is a great little semi-hidden restaurant. We were seated immediately and our server was very attentive and courteous. The only complaint I have is that he didn't really know anything about wine, so when I asked him if my choice of Cabernet would be a good one for my meal selection, he told me he had no idea. Hmm. They were offering two selections of soup that evening--cuban black bean and split pea with ham. Both were very good and hit the spot on the cold evening. We also each got a house salad with our meal which included endive and hazelnuts (always a plus!). What I like most about this restaurant is that each entree is served with soup and salad, making them very economical choices if you think about it. I had the German style short rib of beef with spaetzle and braised red cabbage. This was a delicious combination, although the short rib was just slightly overcooked. My husband got the Adult Mac and Cheese BLT minus the bacon. Now this was something I definitely could get behind. I could smell it from across the table and would definitely order it the next time we go again. In response to the decor comments...I thought the setting was lovely, calm, and serene, and have never seen decorations like that in a strip mall. I think they did very well with the space, and I never once noticed that there weren't any windows. In my opinion, that's a pretty amazing feat given that they are located in what could be considered a basement. Definitely not worthy of a complaint in my book. read more
