The public humiliation, intimidation, and imbalance of power were difficult to watch and reminded me of the dynamics often seen in emotionally abusive relationships. I was in shock. My hands were shaking after witnessing a man old enough to be this young woman's grandfather openly attempt to intimidate and bully her in front of customers and another employee. If he was willing to speak to her that way in front of customers, it left me concerned about how employees may be treated when no one is watching. After he finished yelling at her, she returned to taking my order with kindness, professionalism, and a smile. Despite what had just happened, she remained polite, respectful, and focused on providing excellent customer service. She handled herself with far more professionalism than anyone should have been expected to under those circumstances. That young woman deserves recognition for her professionalism and composure. She represented the business with far more dignity than the person who owns it.
