Will NEVER return to this dentist. STAY AWAY. Was trying to find a dentist in the area over the summer and since this place had a shiny website and won the second place in the Advocate's Best Of (how, I have no idea), I decided to give it a shot. Well, the place looks lovely inside, more like you're entering a meditation studio than a dentist's office, and the staff were friendly, but I was completely shocked by their assessment of my teeth. After never having a cavity in my life, I was told that I had over a dozen cavities and would need some cosmetic work on my bite so that my teeth wouldn't grind against each other when I chewed. Now, I know my teeth aren't perfect; I've never had braces, but seriously? Cosmetic work? When they asked me what my 'goals' were for my teeth (umm, what? I'm at a dentist--clean teeth, duh!), I said I wanted a cavity-free mouth. Not that I wanted whiter, straighter, perfectly aligned, ideal-for-toothpaste-commercials teeth. Ugh. So, utterly panicked, I made an appointment to have the FIRST ROUND of these heinous corrections made. Lacking insurance, this was going to cost over a thousand dollars and they were only tackling one of four areas this time. As you may have guessed, I was utterly tickled by this. Now, upon leaving there, I got a call on my way home asking if I wanted to move my appointment up to the following week (about a month earlier than scheduled). I agreed, but it felt weird. Maybe they legitimately had a cancellation 10 minutes after I left, but it felt WRONG. I called my childhood dentist, got the (crappy) xrays & treatment plan sent to her, cancelled my next week appointment and heard, to my great relief, that this place was full of beans. Eventually I made a trip back home, visited my childhood dentist and was told that pretty much every single thing Strong & Healthy Smiles deemed a cavity was a deep pit with some staining in it. As in, NO CAVITIES. Thank you, Dr. Smith, you are a lifesaver. Anyway, I would never ever recommend these folks to anyone. Either they don't know what the heck they're doing or they're deliberately trying to scam people. Bad news. Why are all the bad reviews of this doctor filtered? People need to know that Sue Keller is a con artist! The first thing she does is insist upon creating a long range plan for your teeth. Not a bad idea if the practitioner is honorable. Unfortunately, Sue Keller is not! I literally spent thousands of dollars at her practice. The last time I went in I was told that I must have XRays even though I had had them only two months before. When I refused, the hygienist insisted that I would need them the next time (only three months later.) Then she proceeded to tell me how I had bone loss and that the only solution was a very painful, expensive and time consuming procedure of scaling and root planing. I was skeptical. When the doctor came in, she insisted that I needed the scaling and in addition, two more caps put on (she had done two or three already.) This was upsetting news to say the least. When I got home, I received an email from her office asking me to fill out a survey about my experience. I was brutally honest and wrote that I felt bullied into the Xrays and was concerned that they were using scare tactics to get me to do more procedures than were necessary. A few days later, I received a letter from Sue Keller basically firing me, saying that I was not compatible with her office and philosophy. It took me about a year to see a new dentist and when I did, she told me that I had no bone loss, that my teeth and bones looked great and that I should keep doing what I was doing. I thought it important to write a review warning others of her alarmist instincts resulting in painful, expensive and unnecessary procedures. What was the most upsetting was to see that the vast majority of reviews recounted the exact same story as mine. Sue Keller is in it for the money. Don't let the beautiful office and saccharine smiles deceive you. Walk in that office and it's a huge money pit! And I'll ask again, why are the vast majority of reviews (all negative) filtered and only one (the sole positive one) not filtered??? read more

I went to Dr. Sue Keller and was told I had many cavities, needed a crown and had many cracked teeth. The estimate for the work I needed to have done was in the thousands. I received a few calls form the woman at the front desk telling me Dr. Keller was concerned about one of my teeth, the one that needed a crown. "I should really come in or I would need a root canal." Instead I went across the street to Florence Dental for a second opinion. The staff was very professional and so were the dentists. I had several people look at my teeth. A Hygienist and two Dentists. And they all came to the same conclusion. I had NO cracked teeth. I did NOT need a crown. I did nave two older fillings that needed to be replaced. Dr. Keller would have charged me thousands of dollars, caused me a lot of pain and ultimately I would have ended up in worse shape than when I went in! I can't help but be reminded of when scammers took advantage of my mother when she was in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease. I checked on line and I was not the only person who had this experience. Somehow our reviews "filtered" and only one positive review shows. Not fair! I will keep reposting this. read more

I spent my mid 20's to mid 30's stressing about the dentist. Never mind the fact that I didn't have dental insurance and the potential bill scared the pants off of me but I'm also terrified of novocaine needles and the little poker they use during checkups!! Fillings and procedures are scary enough but at least you can't feel them once the novocaine sets in...but what about that initial needle? What about the hygienist getting eager with her little poker? I found in my adult years that dentists don't often offer the wonderful "laughing gas" option I remember fondly from my youth. Plus as the years passed my stress level just kept rising because I was embarrassed about how long it actually had been since I had a check up. I met Dr. Keller at a networking event for business owners. I liked her. She wasn't horrified when I asked her about people my age having missed their last 20 or so cleanings because of the poker tool. She just told me I could come see her and have nitrous when I was ready. My entry back into oral health and wellness couldn't have been easier and more comfortable. The office was relaxing- more like a spa than a medical office. It was sunny and open (even though each treatment room still had privacy).Everyone was personable, and professional. Dr. Keller walked me through a few of the issues she found (and again didn't react horrified by my neglect!) and prioritized fixing them so I wasn't overwhelmed. The smile shares program she offers makes staying on course with my oral health easy and affordable. When it was time for me to have fillings her and her staff again went out of their way to make everything comfortable. I am usually frightened by the thought of even scheduling a dental appointment. But after being referred to "Strong & Healthy Smiles by Dr Sue Keller" and having been seen under emergency circumstances and then again for a regular checkup I can honestly say how happy I am to have found Dr Sue and her fabulous staff of professionals. To begin with when entering the office the atmosphere and energy is so light and positive it puts your mind at ease and makes you feel completely at rest and that feeling continues through the entire experience. I searched the internet for a dentist that could help me through my dental phobia because i knew i had some work that needed to be done. I found strong and healthy smiles through this internet search and liked the fact that it was an anti-dentist dentist office. It didn't smell or look like a dentist office and they offered the twilight sleep dentistry i was looking for. The staff in the office is extremely friendly and professional. I do not have a complaint about them. The Dr. on the otherhand i found to be a little condescending, but i really didn't care if she could help me. Like the other reviewer, i was given a worst case scenario screening on my teeth that was going to have to be treated a quarter of my mouth at a time because of the astronomical work and cost that it was going to take. I trusted that this dentist , with all the awards and accolades on the walls, would not try to rip me off and would do what was in my best interest. Hah! Now, $1200 later, i am in debt to her because my insurance won't cover what they call extreme measures. They stated that there was a much more conservative treatment that would have been covered and if we had submitted for a plan estimate we would have been told it wasn't going to be covered. As far as i'm concerned this is the responsibility of the dentist. Now I am stuck with unfinished dental work and a very painful situation, in my mouth and my wallet. This is the second dentist that i feel takes advantage of the fact that a person has a phobia. I am willing to pay a little extra for them catering to my special needs and requirements, but as with my visit many years ago to Dr. Peck in Springfield, I am now in pain and in debt. read more

Worst dentist I have seen in over 20 years! Completely disorganized office, and the wait was 3 hours for an initial visit/exam/and xrays. No cleaning as was scheduled. They were running late, and arbitrarily decided not to do cleaning because they had to go to lunch. Never have I seen such unprofessional behavior. My last dentist was wonderful, as is my current one, needless to say I didn't go back. Don't fall for the tour and their "comfy" office routine, if what you're there for is a good dentist who gets the job done professionally, respects your needs and budget, do not visit here. There are many much better dentists out there. YOu will find more negative reviews than positive, if you look at the reviews not recommended. These tell the real story, not this one positive one, probably someone who works there. I don't understand why these are not recommended. And, i agree also with the scammy assessment of your teeth, because I left there thinking I need thousands of dollars of work too. Then I went to my next dentist..great guy Howard Hausman, comes well recommended by 5 people in my office...and he just said ...maybe a crown down the road, which I knew, and a big filling we need to watch, but not tons of work. And, yes i got a cleaning, exam, and a few more xrays well within in an hour..which is normal. I left Keller, and she didn't even schedule a cleaning for Appt. 2, she wanted me back to test the acid level in my mouth...it's called rip off!! Stay away. read more

More drama and deceit than necessary. Venture elsewhere and avoid paying for the decor!

After 25 years of being almost cavity free, I went to Sue Keller [my first visit to her office]. She said I had 17 cavities and then quoted me for $7,000 worth of dental work. After telling a friend about all this, she warned me that Keller is "the used car salesman of dentistry" and that I should get a second opinion. Well, I got TWO second opinions. Both dentists said that what Keller called a cavity and wanted to drill into are dental stains and/or just a part of my anatomy. They said to keep an eye out every six months, but that 17 cavities was hard to fathom. What's more, they said that even if I needed white fillings, they should never be as expensive as Keller quoted me for. I read an article in the New York Times about microcavities and how new technology is allowing dentists to see way more imperfection than ever before. The article expresses it's a blessing and a curse, because often times we see too much and drill too much. Microcavities are at the center of this conflict between two camps of dentistry: the watch and wait camp (traditionalists) and the preventative drill baby drill camp. Ultimately, you decide which theory makes sense for you. Normally I'm all about prevention, but, not when it comes to taking away teeth. The more fillings you have, the more dental work you'll need in the future [in terms of keeping them in tact]. Ultimately, it's ironic, though, that Keller specializes in populations that have dental trauma. Seems to me she wants to build a mystique of trust with her patients so that she can slam them with giant medical costs in their 'best interest.' Trust is hard to build, though, when you lie to your patients. I asked the woman at the front desk whether or not my cavities were microcavities (not yet through the enamel) and she said that they were NOT microcavities and that the "disease" had penetrated the dentin... which the other two dentists said just wasn't true. Well, Keller lost this battle two against one. When it comes to trusting dentists, I chose the one that doesn't try to squeeze every last bit of money out of you like it's contingent on your very survival. I had a sudden excruciating toothache that needed immediate attention and ended up at Strong & Healthy because they were first to respond with an immediate opening and are located very close to my work office. I was diagnosed with needing an extraction due to what she believed to be a cracked root. I went ahead with it because I was in tremendous pain and needed relief. She took out my tooth, chipped my jaw bone,charged me $1200 and I was sent home and told to take Alleve for pain. Having had an extraction before, and knowing my personal threshold for pain, I asked three times for a prescription pain reliever and was told that it wasn't her "philosophy". Needless to say, the first night I got no sleep because the throbbing and pain was terrible and I was unable to go to work the next day. By the 4th day I was on the mend but suffered unnecessarily because of her "philosophy". I did provide that feedback to the office and she responded that I should have called her. Sorry, but I disagree. Not providing me with appropriate pain relief was irresponsible. I understand that there are people who abuse prescription drugs, but seriously, you pulled my friggin tooth out & chipped my bone if that doesn't constitute pain relief, I'm not sure what does. Aside from that, the office is beautiful, the staff were super friendly but the price was pretty high and imposing a philosophy that I don't subscribe to was unappreciated. read more

I had been experiencing some pain in my jaw and ear related to a bad toothache, so I called Dr. Keller and made an appointment. That evening, the pain turned from manageable to excruciating. I called the office and left a message, hoping that they'd be able to move my appointment up, and they called me the minute the office opened the next day, offering me an appointment later that morning. I was so relieved. Dr. Keller was a calming presence, and her dental assistants are wonderful. They referred me to an oral surgeon for a tooth extraction and managed to get me an appointment for that afternoon. Two days later, I am almost completely pain-free. I hate going to the dentist, but I will be going back to Dr. Keller. Her Smile Shares program is a lifesaver for someone without dental insurance. read more

I went in for an emergency dental visit on a recommendation from a great acupuncturist friend. The office was so accomodating. So weirdly welcoming. So warm. Dr. Sue was the same! Unfortunately, she couldn't treat me at the time and health issues prevented me from rushing back there. I understood her position on my health and her perspective. As a result, I started working with both a physician and a naturopath to work this issue out! I had it under control and booked an appointment for the end of February. The dentist was not happy with the letter my naturopath wrote, so they spoke as well. I had an appointment scheduled at the naturopath on what promised--and delivered--a whopping snow day! So, I had to reschedule for later this week. In the meanwhile, I got a call from the dentist's office, informing me that the dentist had taken the liberty of canceling the appointment because, "You have not had your physician follow up with us, as we had asked." No check in. No request for a new reason. There was no ACTUAL date put on the feedback from the naturopath and my dental appointment was over a week away. I appreciated the dentist's hesitation but I did NOT appreciate this cavalier attitude toward my scheduled time. Additionally, as if to add insult to two months of injury, the office incessantly sends texts or emails reminding me that I'm "overdue for my dental visit." Really??? read more

While Dr Keller is a very nice person, the dental hygenist was a scare-monger. I'm someone who isn't afraid of the dentist and has regularly gone for check-ups, even for periodontal cleanings. Three times I said to the hygenist I wanted a cleaning and what ended up was fussing for more than twice the normal length of a cleaning appointment at any dentist because she was intent on charting my periodontal decline. She never gave me a proper cleaning as I understand it from my previous, lengthy dental history. As a woman who was in the end of her second trimester, my teeth needed attention but would be likely to be affected by pregnancy hormones, etc., so this was unnecessary for a first appointment. I have decided that this office wants to be a day spa and a periodontal office at the same time. I do not like an adversarial relationship with my dental professionals, but this office made the mistake of not doing what I asked for, along the lines of standard practices in other offices, and trying to scare me about my teeth and gums, neither of which have fallen out five months later and a month after giving birth. Making things worse, the office had administrative issues that you would never see in another well-run dentist's office. The hygenist insisted on making me come back to complete the cleaning in a few weeks time, and told me to wait for an email, rather than leave with an appointment in hand as other offices would do. No contact ensued in the next month. Instead, they took care to bill my insurance promptly and managed to f**k up wildly such that the insurance refused to pay for a miscellaneous charge. My previous dentist had always made sure to get the insurance to pay for the periodontal cleanings without a fuss. My dental insurance is considered to be excellent even by dental office staff in my previous doctor's office, so I know this office was just being idiotic about billing. I will agree with the previous review by Kathy J as to what you ought to do. read more

I was drawn to Dr. Keller's office by her "Smile Shares" program, which claims to provide an affordable way to maintain dental health without insurance. After my exam, I was told that I had 16 cavities, and left with a treatment plan totaling over $5,000. After my initial shock wore off, I became skeptical. Prior to this visit, I had received excellent dental care for the majority of my life, and had only had three cavities. A visit to a reputable dentist confirmed my suspicions: the majority of my "cavities" were just discolored deep grooves in my teeth, i.e., normal, healthy teeth. Her quoted fees were double than those of the other dentist. Google "Dr. Sue Keller" and you will see her testimonial on "The Steady Sales Group", a marketing firm, praising them for helping her grow her business. She is taking advantage of individuals without dental insurance and with dental phobia, and laughing all the way to the bank. If you want a dentist who puts your health before their own monetary gain, look elsewhere. read more

I had the same experience as Kathy J. I have been to this dentist twice for consultations. Both times, I was fairly early and eavesdropped with sympathy as Dr Keller told EVERY patient before me that they needed a crown for $1900.00. I thought, "I'm so glad that's not me. That's a lot of money." Then, it was my turn. I haven't had a filling in over 20 years, have never had braces and just wanted a cleaning. 90 minutes later, Dr Keller is telling me I have 19 fractures, need a crown, wisdom teeth all removed, a dozen fillings, and sealants, but most importantly the crown for..... $1900.00. I left there in tears with two appts for the coming month. After thinking about it, I called my old dentist. Same as Kathy above, the "cavities" were stains from coffee drinking. I don't need a crown, and my wisdom teeth could be cleaner but they are healthy and whether or not to have them out is up to me. Don't be enticed by the beautiful architecture and warm welcome. This office is generally very disorganized and is clearly packing in as many patients as possible, with little regard for the time it actually takes to see, assess and treat patients. I witnessed Dr. Keller being rude to her hygienist and front desk staff while I was sitting in the chair. One of my appointments was rescheduled and on my second visit for my actual assessment she seemed to have no recollection of my initial visit and re-asked me all the same questions. I ended up having to wait for an hour because "they scheduled the wrong length of time for my visit". Why was it 2 visits instead of 1? Well, she seemed to be running out of time on my first visit, so she asked me to come back in. The multiple appointment model seems to be one she uses with most of her patients. When I finally got in the chair, she kept pushing me to get a $300 mouth guard that I told her I didn't have the money to pay for and since she "adjusted" my bite, I have had tons of jaw and teeth pain. The kicker is that I overheard a conversation while I was waiting for that hour on my second appointment, in which the receptionist told the person on the phone, who was clearly upset with Dr. Keller's assessment, that she didn't know what to tell her because Dr. Keller is a great dentist and went to Harvard (for undergrad mind you, not for her dental certification) and she "won't be jerked around" by her patients. Direct quote. The fact that this woman (Candice) said this to a patient is asinine, but the fact that she said it in an open office within ear shot of another patient is just insane, that interaction alone made it clear to me that this would be my last visit to Sue Keller. Clearly Sue Keller doesn't have time to deal with patients who want to take an active and participatory role in their dental care and is quick to alienate them and dismiss them as patients when they start asking questions. After 30 years of stellar dental hygiene, with exactly one cavity, Dr. Keller told me that I had 8 fillings and a cracked molar and when I expressed dismay due to financial reasons, she said she has "credit care" that I can take out for treatment or I can save up using SHS as a "savings account". I have been to the dentist for regular cleanings my entire life and have sealant on my rear molars from childhood. There is no way that 8 cavities and a crack developed in a years time. I didn't want to have to write this review, but it would see she scams people, in particular those with dental anxiety. read more

I have been to see Dr. Keller several times in the past six months. First of all the office is a lovely space, very unlike other dentist's office. It is warm and welcoming and full of light. Secondly I found the staff to be friendly and thoughtful. Dr. Keller is a knowledgeable, thorough and meticulous dentist who explains things very well and is very aware of her patient's needs. Office is great, people are great and while others have talked about expensive long term plans, and I experienced the same, I found it easy to decide what I wanted to do and what I did not want to do. Further, the "plan" was based on what I said I wanted as well as what seemed necessary. For example, Dr. Keller suggested I might want my wisdom teeth pulled, as other dentists have suggested, but I just said I was not interested and she left it up to me to decide. read more

I had the best dental experience at Strong and Healthy Smiles by Dr. Sue Keller. I knew Dr. Keller through intersecting professional circles however I had been given a testimonial from another patient recently. When I found myself at a crossroads for dental care or super glue that testimonial tipped the balance without question. As a professional, my smile is very important to me and Dr. Keller understood that. When I inconveniently dislodged a long time veneer onlay on a front tooth for the 8th time in 5 years, I consulted Dr. Keller.This veneer has been reapplied numerous times however the diligence and care to ensure that it will not be a problem in the future was tremendously different than past experiences. Dr. Keller was attentive to my needs as a patient in the chair and beyond in the working professional environment and squeezed me in on short notice.The patient experience at Strong and Healthy Smiles is welcoming, relaxing and, my favorite, productive. You get the results you came for or you get the information you need to make an informed decision. I could see the extraordinary care and compassion given to each client while awaiting my treatment from each staff member.
