Finally got to check this place out with my wife and WOW -- what an experience. I've really been loving the revival of tiki bar culture in the Orlando area, and this spot absolutely nails it. From the moment you walk in, the ambience pulls you in, and the drinks are nothing short of spectacular. The space was designed by Tommy, who also recently re-did the legendary Mai-Kai in Fort Lauderdale, and you can feel that level of thought and authenticity in every detail. Suffering Bastard is a bit more low-key compared to places like Permanent Vacation or Trader Vic's, but that actually adds to the charm -- it feels intimate, relaxed, and incredibly welcoming while still delivering a top-tier tiki experience. Huge shout-out to Matt and Clay, who were both fantastic. They really took the time to understand what I like (and don't like) in cocktails and made sure every drink hit the mark. You can tell they genuinely care about the guest experience. If you're a tiki lover or just want an escape into something fun, flavorful, and different, this place is absolutely worth the visit.

Suffered Bastard is such a hidden gem! Please check this place out before they close and move to their new location. I just love it here. The bartenders are great! The amazing drinks and tiki atmosphere is so awesome! I look forward to visiting their new location when it opens, but am so lucky that I got to experience this great tiki bar in Sanford.

This hidden Polynesian themed bar is located in the back of Tuffy's Bottle Shop and Lounge in Sanford. Suffering Bastard refers to an exotic drink associated with Tiki bars and Trader Vic's. Some recipes call for it to be made with light and dark rums with lime juice and dashes of Curaçao, orgeat syrup, and rock candy syrup while others require Trader Vic's commercial Mai-Tai mix. The drink was served in a uniquely shaped suffering bastard Tiki mug which was a squat fellow with a hangover holding his hands over the top of his head in pain. Tuffy's has a smokey dive bar vibe so I was pleasantly surprised by Suffering Bastard which opened in the spring of 2019. Both Suffering Bastard and another Sanford bar, Bitters and Brass are co-owned by Julian Burgos. I love the tiki culture that was sparked in the US by American GI's returning home from the war in the Pacific theater. They brought back an appreciation for Pacific culture that spread to the wider public. Suffering Bastard capitalizes on this fascination with their small (32 seat) thoughtfully decorated bar area designed by scenic artist and builder of tiki, Typhoon Tommy. Thatched roof structures are set up over tables, shells and idols decorate shelves, and skulls are repurposed into pendant light fixtures. I came on the spur of the moment when I realized Suffering Bastard was just down the street from where I was eating dinner. I think I may have found out about them from someone's Instagram post. I didn't have a reservation and didn't expect to need one but they were really reluctant to let me in. I was not expecting a place in Sanford to have the level of exclusivity that this place apparently has. When I was finally admitted I discovered it was pretty empty. The whole time I was there no one else came in and there were empty seats at the bar and empty tables. You would think that they want to make some money. Despite the unpleasant interaction with the hostess, the Painkiller they made me was good and strong. The Painkiller' s drink history is rooted in the British Virgin Islands and Pusser's Rum trademarked the name and recipe. The drink is made with a blend of rum to four parts pineapple juice, one part cream of coconut, and one part orange juice, well shaken and served on the rocks with fresh grated nutmeg on top. The presentation of my drink was great. It was served in a Pussers Rum mug with a smoking stick of cinnamon that releases aroma as you drink. The Painkiller was a pricey $18 but at least it was a good one. Apparently some time next year Suffering Bastard Tiki will be moving to Orlando. I believe they said in the Mills District to their own stand alone place. Hopefully it will have more space so people will feel welcomed to come in and enjoy their delicious cocktails.

Just the best possible combination of intimate tiki, incredibly high quality drinks, and atmosphere. Try the Saturn and the Missionary's Downfall, true classics done very well. The food is superb too. Easily a 5 out of 5 overall if you're cool and hip.

Suffering Bastard Tiki is truly a hidden gem in downtown Sanford. I went recently to check out a few of their Halloween themed drinks and was pleasantly surprised. Not pictured is their purple coquito that my partner enjoyed. The staff was truly amazing and we had a great night out chatting it up and enjoying a few drinks at this establishment. I cannot wait to go back.

The tiki bar is tucked away in the back of tuffy's. The theme and decor are spot on - like theme park level attention to detail! All of the bartenders and the host were friendly and approachable. We shared an order of crab Rangoon that was delicious and came out fresh and hot. We made it in time for happy hour and tried a few different drinks - Saturn, Mai tai, Nui Nui, and a piña colada. All of them were 10/10 This was a fun little date night and we got lucky with 2 seats at the bar but reservations are highly recommended

Came in for the first time ever yesterday. They had just opened so it wasn't very busy. The place was small and gave off speakeasy vibes as it's inside of another bar. I loved my drink I had the Mai tai and the skull and bones. The service was great both guys working the bar were super nice. Drinks weren't crazy expensive. I will come again.

Truly a hidden gem to us Northern Orlandoans. Love the guys here and all they do. They're talented, kind, and carry on the legacy of Don The Beachcomber and Trader Vic. Classics include the Mai Tai, and Zombie, with my personal favorite being the Nui Nui, Pearl Diver, and their Virgin Pina Colada.

Most of the time when I go here drinks and ambiance are great. Tonight was different drinks till good but not same ambiance. Door was open no hostess's seemed like bar people were taking care of front. Our reso was late but not same level of service either. Love the deco and the drinks but not same experience

Another great tiki bar just outside Orlando! Suffering bastard is a classic tiki bar with all the quintessential tiki staples. I had a Mai Tai that spot on! The bartenders were cool and drinks were flying out from behind the bar! We got an order of crab rangoons that were piping hot and delicious! Don't sleep on Happy Hour! They have a great selection of Tiki standbys for 8 bucks!

Such a cute tiki bar! It is quite small, I'd recommend making reservations for sure. Hubby and I got lucky, we came on a Sunday right when they opened and got seats at the bar. I don't remember the drinks we had but wow they were delish! The bartenders really care about their craft here which makes the experience that much better! They do have food as well which we devoured before even taking a picture lol. We had their potstickers which I was inclined not to share with my hubbs- but I just couldn't do that to him lol. We also had a side of furikake fries! Just go! You won't regret it

The Suffering Bastard Tiki is my favorite tiki bar in Orlando. I love their large variety of drink options and how they specify how strong the drinks are on the menu. The bar is actually inside Tuffys so it's like a speakeasy. With that being said, it is small inside so you may need to wait for a table. The drinks here are fantastic and I've never had a bad experience.

Ask the Community - Suffering Bastard Tiki

    Do they make mocktails?

Yes they have a selection of mocktails

We will be traveling with our (well adjusted, tiki embracing 13 and 11y/o) kids. Is it 21+ only or if we get there early can they tag along with us? Thanks.

I looked this up for you and they are 21 and above. Sorry.

Standing only, all concrete in the hangar, one bar, lots of waiting. The bathrooms are cleanish and highly functional, no flushing issues, not disgusting, multiple women's stalls. For our concert, the venue set up a Coleman cooler of water and small free water cups by the entry, but they did not make an effort to refill the water jug, so we got quite dehydrated and unhappy halfway through. Liquid death cans and cups of ice can be purchased for about the same cost as alcohol at the bar. Nutrl was only $6 and change, I was thrilled! The sound quality was EXCEPTIONAL! Kudos and a half to Tuffy's for excellent balance and not blowing our eardrums. The light show, meh, too many dark blends, too moody and could barely see the band. When most lit up, I enjoyed seeing the stage. The place got very crowded, very quickly. They need crowd control and to not overpack concert goers like sardines. The outdoor bierhall vibe was chill but was basically a refuge for chainsmokers :( Would def go back, but have clear expectations, multiple water cans in pockets, and very very supportive shoes for tha concrete floor.

I want to preface this by saying we went on a very cold day and ate indoors..the pizza was outstanding and the waiter was friendly and engaging..in other words, typical for our experiences there. Prior to this, we even brought friends who hadn't been there before and loved it...now, to our recent experience: We were seated and the waitress seemed as though she wasn't very familiar with the menu and had to check on our requests, each check took a disturbingly long time. When we brought our friends, my gal ordered a hamburger and I asked the waitress if she could have the wagyu, rather than the angus burger, she readily said yes and my gal marveled over the burger...fast forward to the last experience, the waitress said she'd have to order the wagyu as posted and it "wasn't available" as a stand alone order. So my gal settled for the angus burger and again, the wait was a bit long and as we were considering to leave, the waitress showed up, gave us our food and left. the onion rings were cold...literally...they had been out so long that they weren't even warm (our prior experiences the onion rings arrived hot and delicious). Again we waited for our waitress to return and my gal had to ask another waitress if she could get us some hot onion rings. That waitress noted the cold onion rings and brought them back to the kitchen to prove we weren't being unreasonable, which was a greatly appreciated gesture on her part. Very promptly, the "other" waitress brought our onion rings, apologizing profusely...we thanked her and when my gal started into her Caesar salad, it was inedible....soggy, nearly tasteless and resembling a hot spinach salad with soggy lettuce than a crisp Caesar salad....the upside, the second batch of onion rings were up to their usual excellent standard, the burger was good, but not the intensity of flavor their wagyu burger had. If we hadn't been semi-regulars, it is a near certainty we wouldn't go back, but we aren't going to let a single experience unravel years of good experiences.
