The baked goods at Sugar & Spice got me through many a stressful spots during graduate school. A little corner shop in the Indiana Memorial Union, it's a convenient place to grab whatever sweet or pastry you like as well as coffee or other beverages. One of the most revered items they make is the Special K Chewie, a glorious concoction of cereal, peanut butter, and Karo syrup. Ask any IU alum and chances are that he or she will rave about them. Sweet, chewy, crunchy - these no-cook cookies are fantastic. It's hard to believe that such deliciousness can be had for just $1.09! I know they make other cookies, but this is the one for me. When I mentioned that I now lived out of state, the staff told me that they can ship them to me. What?!? I really shouldn't know this, it could be dangerous. If you have reason to be on the IU campus as a guest, student, or traveler, make sure you stop by Sugar & Spice for a quick breakfast or afternoon snack. This is the IU bakery and coffee shop located in the Memorial Union building. Their baked goods can also be found at other campus cafes. The baked goods are awesome! The cookies and muffins and cinnamon roll just seem to melt in your mouth (I'm sure lots of butter is involved). They even have a very good vegan coffee cake! The drinks are not great and consistency is not the name of the game. Maybe the coffee is better than the tea, but the chai tastes more of sugar and cinnamon than tea, and the matcha was very murky, but maybe that's because I got the strawberry matcha and that affected the colour. It didn't taste bad but just didn't taste like quality matcha. They have decent teabags, but the brand and selection varies and is not what's listed on the menu board. They can do a tea latte but don't always have teas that work well with milk. I like the iced tea they make during the summer better than the hot tea. They sometimes have bubble tea, which is made with a machine and is decent (as far as artificially flavoured tea goes) but very sweet. It's a complete gamble as to whether or not the bubble tea machine will actually be on at any given time. I tried to get it in the evening once but was told they usually power it down around 6, so came back around 4:30 next time, but it was off again. I finally did manage to get bubble tea a few times around lunch time and in the morning, but there have also been days where they don't turn it on at all despite displaying the posters for it. Tapioca pearls are on the menu but they seemingly never have them, only the popping pearls. The baristas are students and are sometimes friendly, sometimes not. I would guess there's a combination of high turnover and poor training because some of them just seem very confused. They usually do okay at keeping the line moving though. I come for the baked goods, and just get a drink while I'm at it because I don't want to wait in another line at Starbucks even though I actually think Starbucks makes slightly better drinks. read more

I lived on campus and every Monday and Friday I would start my academic week with a fresh fruit tart. They make the absolute best tarts there. The service was always quick and even when they were slammed they still moved everyone through the line in a quick motion. The atmosphere of the place is always very fast paced but the people are nice and the girls who typically check you out at the registers ask about your day and have a quick chat and never get tired of it. Hands-down freshest cinnamon roll I've eaten outside of homemade. Delicious, too! I was staying at the Biddle Hotel in late July. While I LOVE this place--the hotel, the student Union, IU campus--I was missing my free hotel breakfast. Crazy me, I actually look forward to free food. But when I stumbled on this little bakery outside the IU Bookstore, I was super grateful to have 'missed' that free junk because the cinnamon roll was divine. I made sure to stop back by that evening, too. I usually ask the servers their favorite(s) or for a best-selling recommendation. Both times their suggestions were spot on. For my nighttime snack I chose a slice of the chocolate chip & nut snack cake--can't remember it's actual name--quite distinctive. But they'll know if you ask for it by description. Peets Coffee is delicious and the baked goods are as well. Although there's a Starbucks nearby, I prefer Sugar and Spice over it every time I'm at the IMU just because it's cashiers are friendlier and I think Peets Coffee has a richer aftertaste. Some recommendations from the menu include the Chai Masala Javiva (like a frappeccino) and the Caramel Macchiato! You can't go wrong with a roasted self-serve coffee either! Got the 3 stars because the Wells cake was good but they got the name on the cake wrong and even after writing it out for them in person when I came to pick up the cake, it was spelled wrong on the account that if they took off the original misspelled name all the way it would ruin the cake. I thought it was a bit absurd seeing as how the name being spelled wrong kind of ruined the cake a little itself but didn't want to cause any trouble seeing as how they were closing in an hour and that they were very apologetic. For the price of the cake it was a bit frustrating. I'm hopeful that my next experience ordering in advance from Sugar & Spice will be a bit better. A favorite small item you can walk in and buy are their no-bakes and Special K clusters which are very good! read more

This place is so unreliable for one of the main things they market: cupcakes. Every single thing I'm informed is buttercreme is some sort of creme cheese icing. I'm quite sure they don't know how to do anything but the same creme cheese icing. I don't like it, especially when I'm consistently promised an entirely different icing. Their cake also leaves a lot to be desired. The lemon buttercream cupcake was devoid of lemon flavor, it tasted like vanilla pound cake with this cream cheese icing. (And by the way, I pointed to the cupcakes and asked what flavor they were, and I was informed "lemon buttercreme.") I feel ripped off once again. If it's cream cheese- Say so! read more

If you're looking for a cheaper, faster alternative to the long lines at the IMU Starbucks, Sugar & Spice might be just what you're looking for. They're smaller than the ol' Sbucks, with mostly sweet baked goods instead of any meaty breakfast sandwiches, but they have a solid repertoire of sugary snacks (my go-to is the cherry turnover) and hot beverages. There's no seating inside, but there are tables right outside and obviously all over the IMU, so don't let that deter you. Support something a little more local than Starbucks and still get your morning energy. read more

Ordered a one year wedding anniversary cake from them. Picked up the cake and served it to my guests the same day. The buttercream was sour or it was made with salt. Either way we ended up throwing the entire cake away as no one could even eat a bite. I was so embarrassed. I messaged them and told them about the incident. Had my wedding cake done here. Very easy to work with but on the day of, the cake was not great. They were suppose to set it up on a cakestand with cupcakes but they just dropped it off and ran, had to have my catering arrange and do all the set up. And then my cake ended up falling apart. One side with all the frosting just fell right off. read more
