I love this place for the diverse types of plants that they have and it's in my neighborhood. I've never had a bad experience here from the staff. Always helpful and the owner is really nice. I went in today to buy pansies. They have a nice selection. Granted the weather hasn't been great for spring gardening but that's ST. LOUIS. The prettiest noise was going around the outside of the nursery. It was the prettiest glass wind chimes. I had to go inside and pay. I told the girl that this was a good day to sell chimes because it was so windy and they sounded so beautiful. No response, just stared at me. I mentioned that I would like to get them for a birthday present. No response, just stared at me. There was absolutely no one there. I would be grateful to get a sale, have someone to talk to. Get some freaking personality!! I would do a better job than that. I tried to ask her a question about pansy dollars and you would have thought I asked what sized bra she was wearing!!! Pffft!! I may NEVER go there again and I spend a good amount of money there I can go to Wiethop (while they're open), Rolling Ridge, lots of choices out there...please have people who can converse with customers. We decided to start naturalizing our back yard. We want to make an inviting space for pollinators, primarily, but we also want a space that is allowed to do its own thing. We stopped raking 2 years ago, and that made a huge difference: we have oodles of fireflies and butterflies, way more than our neighbors who do the whole well-manicured lawn thing. Anyway, we talked to a person at the prairie booth at the Earth Day festival about native plants, and the website pointed us to Sugar Creek! We were very pleasantly surprised at the amount of options here. We were able to find all sorts of native plants to introduce into our yard. We really found it easy to navigate since they were sectioned into native and sun needs. It made it very easy once we figured it out. We were only able to afford about 6 plants the first time we came here and 4 the next time. They are a bit pricey, just fair warning. However, the selection is great and it's supporting a business that isn't a huge corporation, so it's worth a visit! read more

My wife and I visit several times a year, the best plants and veggies we can find. Some spectacular plants to choose from and everyone we talk to about each plant knows a ton about each one. Such a great place! I'm just getting into gardening, so I met a friend here to hang out. Found it all thanks to Yelp! The owner was so friendly and just walking around asking folks if they had questions, and showed us the layout and where everything was. But not in a pressuring way. She walked me inside to show me the restroom and they have free gardening handouts in there too. Very reasonable prices and healthy looking plants. Sometimes at other nurseries I noticed browning plants over or under watered, but not here. Will definitely be back. read more

I have been doing curbside pickup for health reasons during the pandemic, and I thought I'd have to forgo my annual Christmas wreath because I can't go inside stores. (I can't have a tree because my cat knocks things over, so I've been treating myself to a real wreath every year. It's actually one of my only Christmas decorations.) I did a google search for curbside pickup of wreaths in St. Louis, and I'm so happy that I discovered Sugar Creek Gardens. Their website is easy to navigate, and ordering and directions for pickup were wonderful. I specified my day of pickup, went there, parked, located my name right off the bat, and took my wreath! Bonus: it's so beautiful and it smells like Christmas!!! It is already bringing me lots of joy. Thank you, Sugar Creek Gardens, for offering such well-organized and much-needed curbside service! Service is terrible. I went there last week. There was three employees at the checkout. Two were discussing something with their backs towards me. The other employee was standing five feet away and looked totally confused. I had to ASK her for help. I asked if their butterfly bushes had started leafing out yet because I bought a mini butterfly bush there last year and it was not leafing out. She did not know so we walked over to another employee and I asked her. She said, "What do you mean?" I explained again and asked if there was a warranty on their plants. She said, "Yes, 60 days." Well, that did help me and I didn't really expect a warranty. But after asking about a warranty, the employee tried twice to give me a paper on their return policy. Strange........ Also, their prices are high. I paid $31 for that mini butterfly bush last year. Usually I don't pay much for plants but I really wanted it. Their shade perennials are really high priced. Also, come the mid summer their plants are REALLY stressed. They have no shade for their sun perennials. Plants are in the hot sun all day long. This is OK if the plants are in the ground but and it really takes a tole when they are in pots. I have worked in the nursery business and I am a very experienced gardener. They could so much better with customer service and keeping healthy plants. It's really a shame. read more

Excuse my language, but this place is THE SHIT! They have a great selection, a friendly and knowledgeable staff, and if you happen to stop by on a really busy day and the parking lot is full, you just park down the street in an overflow lot- they will give you a free 6-pack (of flowers, not beer) for the inconvenience! I love flowers. I love planting flowers, smelling flowers, buying flower arrangements- nothing makes me quite as happy as fresh cut flowers. Sugar Creek Gardens has a great selection of my favs: peonies, gardenias, and hydrangea plants. They not only have different sizes of each of those plants, but they also carry different maturity levels; you can buy a plant that has not blossomed yet (if you get there early enough in the season), or you can buy a flowering plant and transplant it into your own personal garden. Either way, you're going to get a superb product. Sure, their prices aren't as low as some of the other larger, chain stores in the area. In my opinion, I'd rather spend a little extra and know that my money is staying local and helping to boost our local economy. It's businesses like this that make the country "work"... I'll spend the couple of extra bucks to ensure that they will be in business for a long, long time. read more

Oh my gosh this place is like my own personal heaven. As long as I am on my allergy meds. Ahem. I really dig on the beautiful flowers they have for sale here. The staff seems fairly knowledgeable and helpful. I haven't actually made a purchase yet but as soon as I have some area to plant stuff for my own little garden, I will be making many return trips. The prices aren't as good as places like Home Depot for some of the plants, but I'd really love to support a local business like this. Kim at Sugar Creek was obviously very busy when I called, but when asked for guidance, she cheerfully said I was not to worry, she was happy to help me. I live in the suburbs of Chicago, and wanted to choose, order, and pay for plants, which a lovely lady's daughter, my friend, was going to pick up. My selections were to be gifts for two occasions -- the lady's 100th birthday(!!), and her Mothers Day present. Throughout our several conversations, Kim could not have been nicer, more accommodating, and more delightful. I decided within minutes that no matter what Sugar Creek's charges were, I'd buy all my plants from them. And do you know what? They were amazingly reasonably priced! I'm originally from St. Louis, grew up there, and have many, many friends and family there. Guess who is getting ALL my St. Louis garden and floral business in the future? (P.S. My lovely lady is thrilled with her Sugar Creek plants, and said "they need to go in the ground right away"! Her daughter and I are so happy to see her enjoyment and anticipation, as well as excited about how these beautiful plants will look through the years, as they grow in her yards!) read more

Garden stores and nurseries are very dangerous places for me. I LOVE gardening and have a habit of spending waaaay too much money on flowers and plants every year. Sugar Creek Gardens is one of my Danger Zones. I still can't believe their vast selection of perennials! They've got everything from typical hostas and daylilies to astilbe and rudbeckia to bleeding hearts and shasta daisies ad infinitum. Already this is dangerous for me. There are so many varieties of texture and color and each of these plants has its own personality--maybe it's fussy and needs to be coddled, maybe it's rough and tumble, built for neglect and drought-tolerant... There's something for every gardener here. I love their "Grow Native" section of plants, especially since I'm new to the area and not exactly sure what "works" in this climate (which, believe it or not, IS different from Chicago's). And, of course, I love the annuals--bright, cheery flowers exploding in color and variety. Sugar Creek even carries shrubs and grasses AND vegetables and herbs. The helpful staff always appears a little surprised when they ask if everything on the cart is mine. Yep. It's mine, alright. I told you this is a dangerous place. I can't help but feel that it's a tad bit expensive, but then again, perennials are generally more costly than annuals at the outset. I have to do more comparison shopping in the area to find out who has the best prices. I do know that I've never seen a bigger selection of perennials ANYWHERE, so Sugar Creek definitely gets props for that. I'm looking forward to a the next few weeks--as it warms up, the place will fill up with all sorts of fun and exciting annuals. And I will need to get a job at Sugar Creek to keep up my plant habit. Lucky for me, I haven't stumbled into their gift shop yet--I don't need gardening gifts and home decor items competing with my plant cash. read more

While I agree that Sugar Creek has a good selection of perennials and annuals, I decided yesterday not to go back after negative experiences with their employees. The women who work there have consistently been very unhappy and negative. They walk around scowling, ignoring questions from customers, and demonstrate how much they don't like working there with their argumentative reactions. Last year, I asked an older woman where the climbing roses were. She asked, "What makes you think we have climbing roses." Because you list them on your website, I said. When other employees gave me attitude this week I made the decision that I'm done. read more

I like to spread out my business a bit, but after having some bad customer service at another nursery this spring I decided I should just stick with Sugar Creek. This is the best nursery in the St. Louis area. The staff is very knowledgeable and will provide expertise if you are trying to determine if a plant will succeed in the area you wish to plant. They have a large selection of native plants, shade plants, roses, bushes and annuals. They provide free classes where you can learn more about the plants BEFORE you purchase them.
