    S'mores donut
    Ashely V.

I was at the Milwaukee Public Market today with a friend and had to stop at the pop up shop to try Sugar Cube Donuts. I've been hearing about them and seeing awesome pictures of them online, so today was my day. I was a little surprised to see they were averaging $4/donut, but they're pretty large and thought it would be worth a try. I ordered the s'mores donut and my friend ordered the sprinkles donut. I was really surprised when I bit into mine that it wasn't a traditional donut base, it's actually quite yeasty. The icing or glaze on top is super sweet and, I'm not really sure how to describe it, but it's a little over powering for the rest of the donut. My friend felt the same way about hers as well. These are certainly large enough to share with several people, I don't think I'd ever be able to eat a whole one by myself in one sitting. If these donuts were bite-sized and you could get maybe 4-6 pieces to a pack instead of one super large donut that would be awesome. It's certainly a fun donut stop for the novelty of it, but if I were going to buy donuts for the office or the weekend I'd rather go to a traditional bakery.

I finally was able to snag a box of these pop up donuts! We preordered last weekend and pick up at the Kind Oasis was super easy. The donuts are flavorful without being cloyingly sweet. My favorites were the Peach, lemon poppyseed, and an afternoon tea donut. The puppy chow was okay but I'm not a huge fan of chocolate. Overall, if you can get your hands on some sugar cube donuts, DO IT! You won't regret it.

Menu pic of said "Berry Blast" SugarCube Donut - gorgeous, right? Where can I get THAT one??

Round Two! We had pre-ordered this box prior to checking them out last time. This box looked much better and very much like the photos they had posted on Instagram. How'd they taste? Not bad... Fruit Loops: stale chewy cereal. Maybe stay away from cereal on donuts? And whatever cereal that was it wasn't actual Foot Loops lol. Spicy Chai: zero flavor. Tasted like a plain glazed donut. I love chai. I have it every other day. This was no chai. Cinnamon Roll: the cute little cinnamon roll on top of the donut was hard and dry. But the donut itself was decent! Tasty cinnamon icing. PB&J: the best one! It was pretty wet inside but outside was intact and the flavors were excellent.

This is a sugarbox of 3 of my most favorite donuts- matcha, chocolate and apple pecan

Sugar cube donuts took me by surprise as to how awesome they are! They are hand made donuts with the wildest combo of flavors! A must try

I got donuts for one of their pop ups at a hotel cafe. There was one employee running the stand and even though there was a line she made an effort to greet everyone making Conversation. I am not someone who goes looking for Sweets but when I get that craving once in A blue moon I'm eating sugar cubes donuts the donut boxes pure quality they don't skimp on ingredients every bite is as good as the next. The monkey bread and pecan donut are by far must haves and goes well with a latte. These donuts compliment coffee but are great stand-alone treats

The only reservation we could get was 4:30PM but we were excited we were able to get in at any time. Because of the timing, the sun was setting over the water, which was really pretty to see. I got a little confused with where to enter the building and I guess I went in the wrong way because I walked down the dock and entered the back of the restaurant by the restrooms, lol. Barnacle Bud's had a cool decor vibe and moody lighting. Our waitress was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and you could tell she was very excited about the menu and the pop-up experience. She provided exceptional customer service- she went over the menu thoroughly, came back to check on us multiple times, and always refilled our water, which I always appreciate! To start, we ordered wine and the relish tray. Everything on the relish tray was a little too vinegary for me but most of the table enjoyed it. However, the four of us didn't finish it. It was pretty powerful with vinegar flavor. For an entree, I had the salmon with veggies and my friends ordered the lamb chops, carbonara, and a vegetarian friend ordered a plate of Bud's potatoes and veggies. The food was good but I thought mine was very salty. And I'm glad I ordered my sauce on the side. For dessert, the four of us shared the mousse, which had good flavor and texture. Also to note, there were up-charges for veggies, sauce was $3 extra, etc., so just pay attention to pricing if that's a concern for you. Overall, it was a unique experience and worth checking out.

The place was packed on a Saturday afternoon, so the greeter gave us some menus and let us know we could order and he'd find a table for us ASAP. We got to the counter and the cashier told us it would be a 45 minute wait. We accepted this and ordered anyway. We picked a curry, a noodle dish, and a Thai beer each. The cashier was very friendly. The original greeter found us a table almost immediately after we paid and mentioned the beer is especially nice over ice, so we took his recommendation. Beers came quickly, but food did take at least a half hour, as the cashier mentioned. Table and dining room were clean and nicely decorated with warm lighting and relaxing music. Bathrooms were also clean. Food was very good and flavorful. The portions were decent. We were full, ate most of our dishes, and didn't take anything home. The original greeter came back and checked on us while we were eating. Service was fantastic throughout the experience. The food was pricey, but aligns with other Thai restaurant prices in the area. Dishes were around $20. The whole experience was worth it. We will be returning!

From the outside, the place looked lively and entertaining, largely because there was an active cornhole tournament happening. I can honestly say I've never seen that many self-proclaimed cornhole enthusiasts gathered in one place before, so it definitely had a unique atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food experience was inconsistent at best. The cucumber salad was completely inedible. The sausage entrée had multiple hard bits throughout that felt like biting into popcorn kernels, which made it difficult to enjoy. The rice served on the side was noticeably dried out and tasted like it had been sitting for quite a while. To top things off, the restaurant automatically added a 20% gratuity to the bill. If you're heavily into cornhole tournaments and the social scene that comes with them, this may be your kind of place. If you're going primarily for the food, expectations should probably be adjusted accordingly.

Granted, it was because of my Chase CC that we got a prime time…read morereservation and the meal was essentially free due to Open Table credit, but honestly, we were so happy with our experience. I completely agree that this isn't authentic chinese food, but approachable fusion that tries to keep it truthful to the flavors and presentation. The highlight of the meal was the peking duck, which they only have about 2 orders of a night. We snagged it immediately when we sat down and it can easily feed 4 people with the sides. The duck was juicy and cut into thick pieces, so it was more of a steak rather than a bao style that I am used to. Nevertheless, it was delicious and even warmed up well the next day. The green onion wraps were...strange in my opinion. They fell apart easily and didn't have the best flavor that complemented the duck. Overall, I would come back for the duck itself, but everything else was average or extra salty. Service was great and the staff are very attentive. Happy eating!

The vibe: It was packed at 7:15 PM on a Sunday, and they held firmly to our reservation time--which is understandable given the crowd. We took a nice stroll while waiting, so no harm done. Once seated, the service was excellent--attentive, prompt, and professional. The food: This is clearly high-end Americanized Chinese food, not authentic regional cuisine. If you go in expecting that, you'll have a better experience. The menu reads like a "greatest hits" collection--familiar dishes done with nicer ingredients and presentation. What worked well: Smashed Cucumber - A strong start. The cilantro and bean sprouts were exceptionally fresh, and the peanut finish added nice depth, though the sauce leaned a bit salty for my taste. Service and atmosphere - polished and efficient. What fell short for me: Wonton Soup - The wrappers were thicker than I prefer; I like a more delicate, translucent skin. The leek-based broth was pleasant, though. Salt & Pepper Cod - The seasoning was good, but the cod pieces were too thick, so the center remained bland. Halving the thickness would improve the texture. Mongolian Beef - Tender meat, but I wanted thicker cuts and larger onion pieces for more bite. It leaned a bit soggy for my preference. Rice Cake with Pork Belly - Pork belly was well-executed, but too many rice cakes overwhelmed the dish. The flavor leaned Korean (almost kimchi-like), which felt like a departure from the rest of the menu. Beef Chow Fun - Felt repetitive, using the same thin-sliced beef and bean sprouts as other dishes. I'd prefer charred broad rice noodlesthat are thin. These rice sticks were wide and thick,so like the cod, the center of the rice sticks were bland. I also preferred more eggs in this dish for variety. The overall pattern: Many dishes share similar ingredients and sauce profiles, which makes sense for a busy kitchen but does reduce variety across the meal. Bottom line: If you're looking for authentic, nuanced Chinese cooking, this probably isn't your spot. But if you want a polished, upscale version of familiar Chinese-American favorites in a great location, with reliable service, Dan Dan delivers that well. I personally wouldn't return, but I can see why it's popular--especially for the crowd that wants comfort food in a nicer setting.
