This is an odd little eatery in the Rivercenter Mall, very conveniently located if you need a place to eat close to the convention center. The food is okay- not exceptional, and definitely overpriced. The service is very good. They do have an automatic gratuity of 20%, however, so be aware. Earlier this year, I saw a Groupon deal to buy gift cards to @thesugarfactory. I thought to use it @sugarfactorysanantonio when my family came into town last weekend. We decided to check out the River Walk while we were in San Antonio and got hungry from walking around and smelling all the food. We initially were seated in Margaritaville, but when they told us they were out of all the main entrees that we decided to try Sugar Factory. Sugar Factory only had one family seated and eating as we approached the podium. The host/ess were focused on their phone and didn't bother to look up. I asked if they were out of food items and they didn't respond. I asked louder if they were out of any food items and they finally answered no without looking up. We stood awkwardly in front of them and I looked at the members of my party as we exchanged a, "Okay, what do we do now?" - look. Finally, I said more loudly than I would have liked, "Can we be seated?" They finally looked up as if we were bothering them, grabbed menus and took us to the far back corner. We were not warned of the 20% forced gratuity and nothing on the menu stood out about it. The mosquitos and gnats were pretty bad that I had to go next door and buy bug spray, and we took turns stepping out of the restaurant to spray down so we could eat in peace. I thought the food tasted good, actually. The waitress was very nice and personable. They had a glow in the dark margarita that I wanted to try and when it arrived, we all leaned in trying to see the luminescent properties. After a while of bumping and stirring the glass, we finally asked the waitress what the trick was to get it to glow and she said something about not having the (something, I couldn't hear what that something was) that would make it glow and asked if we would like another drink? We accepted the offer. I thought the drinks tasted good - but if they had a gimmick, I feel that if that gimmick wasn't available, the waitress should have said, "We don't have XX that makes it glow, do you still want the drink?" We thought we ordered a modest amount of food but we were full and couldn't go in for the desert so we asked for our bills. Our jaws about hit the floor for the end amounts and THAT is when the 20% jumped off the page. I liked our waitress overall and the food, so I went ahead and left a tip in addition to the 20%. We are on a family vacation with four adults, three teenagers and a four month old. When a four month old is crying hungry, you stop and feed them so that's what we did. There were absolutely no customers sitting outside and no customers on the inside. One of the staff members comes out and asked if we were ordering. We politely said no just stopped to feed the baby. The place itself is super cute, and I can totally see it being a fun spot if you're after over-the-top desserts or drinks. But as far as regular food goes... not great. I ordered the steak salad, and honestly it was a big disappointment. The steak was tough (couldn't even chew it), cold like it had just come out of the fridge, and had pretty much no flavor. Lots of variety of candy but they are the home of the insane monster sundaes and they have private parties and items that are eclectic for any occasion. The time spent here with my sisters was great. It's always fun having family in town. The food was amazing. I'm not a drinker but my sisters enjoyed the drinks. Our server was very friendly and kind. She answered any and all questions that we may have had. It didn't take long for our food to come out. The ambiance was beautiful. The Sugar Factory is way overpriced for the quality of food you receive. The food looked better than it tasted, and for the prices they charge, I expected much more. Unfortunately, the quality just wasn't there. What made the experience worse was finding out a 20% gratuity was automatically added without it being clearly explained upfront. If a gratuity is already included, you'd at least expect attentive service--but that wasn't the case at all. The experience was fun and different but we should have went for dessert only because we got full on food. The shakes and sweets looked amazing but we didn't have them. The food was good. Nothing that would make us go back. We did run out of water and waitress never came back for a while because she was training somebody and the restaurant got more people after our food was brought out. We were going back and forth about getting our son chicken tenders or waffle then settled quickly on chicken n waffles at the recommendation of the waitress. What we didn't realize was that the chicken and waffles came with a huge half chicken on bone. But we were there on a holiday week so maybe it takes a lot to keep it clean if busy. Lastly, the restaurant isn't exactly kid friendly because there aren't any cups with lids just glass. It's all about the experience! I know the goblets are bigger than what I've had in another location. Definitely easy to share with others. This place is on the Riverwalk so the workers attitude display that which was a disappoint. They assume all customers are visitors to San Antonio. I get that this place is basically a novelty, and had been to the Illinois location multiple times prior to moving to Texas. That one is actually much nicer. This was my 1st time at the Riverwalk location, and I was completely shocked to find a 20% surcharge added to the bill. I thought this was TX and not CA. The bill is even calculated inappropriately, as to double dip on the tip . It clearly states that 15% of this 20% surcharge is to be distributed to the service staff, which would clearly imply that this is a partial tip. The surcharge is then added to the subtotal of the bill and you are taxed on it. You were also asked to tip on the surcharge amount, which is not proper, based on their written calculation. There are many media article written about this since COViD re: these surcharges, that clarify this etiquette, one written by Today.com days ago even. Stating that you never tip on the surcharge, and it should not be calculated into the tip. Anyone who has worked the service industry knows that you tip on the subtotal alone. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Also does not permit being required to tax or on top of a surcharge. Under FTC rules, a surcharge is also an implied tax, and you cannot tax a tax. When rental car companies have done this to me, I have filed a complaint with the FTC and won it. This is the exact same circumstance, and sugar factory should not be calculating their bill in this manner. I would encourage anyone who encounters this with SF to keep their receipt, and file a complaint online with the FTC. It takes 3 min. A suggestive tip should be on the subtotal alone. Not the BS that they are pulling. Taxes should be on the subtotal alone, with the surcharge added afterwards. (not that I agree with a surcharge, I think it's a total scam) For them to collect a surcharge and say that it's being distributed to the service staff, and then still asking for a tip, is basically a double tip. Adding in that surcharge and then calculating the tip amount based on the subtotal, plus the surcharge, increases the tip amount that they are also requesting from the consumer. which is them trying to get the consumer to give a higher tip. Oh, and let's not forget the gnats. The many, many gnats and flies that will join you for your meal! Making it near impossible to enjoy your food. The club sandwich I ordered was stacked in such a way that there is no reasonable way to actually pick it up and eat it. I ended up having to just peel it off a layer at a time and try to eat it which was completely ridiculous and a hot mess. Totally defeating the purpose of why I ordered a club sandwich in the first place. When I asked the waitress for some napkins (since there was only 1 on the table), she brought back 3 cocktail napkins that would go under a glass! Not even an actual napkin! 1/2 way through my mail, she made sure to bring the check though, to try to rush me along. Yet when I was ready to leave, nobody could be found so I could get a box for my leftovers. So they were just left behind. I didn't want to make a scene in the moment, and what was done was done. I played the game and paid what they asked, and my $20 club sandwich cost me nearly $40 in the end. This is why business is down for places like this! People like me feel scammed and irritated and won't ever return. I go to the riverfront regularly, and eat at a restaurant every time I am there. This won't be one I return to. read more

Went here for my niece B Day yesterday and the service was HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE ! Definitely different from the Vegas location and they should be ashamed. My sister planned a nice brunch (family stylish) and it wasn't cheaper by far. The food was mediocre and the service well If a place could get shut down for horrible service they would be closed. We never received the mimosas, the big sundae and I believe there was something else , but ai would have to ask my sister. We were there for about three hrs and still hadn't received everything. They brought waffle out that was still doughy in the inside. My sister did talk to someone who seemed genuinely nice but I would not go to this location again. This was way to much money and planned to far in advance for this much disaster. Tonight was the worst experience I have had at this restaurant. The waitress tonight was the awful. I wish I knew her name so I could call her out publicly. She had a bad attitude and was inattentive throughout our entire time. Then we had an issue with them not accepting our Sugar Factory gift card. She said she would check with her manager and came back and said that he said we can't use it. I asked to speak to the manager myself and she said she would get him. We waited another 20 minutes and no one came. Nor did she come back to apologize for the delay or give an update. I had to go get a bartender (who was super nice and the only positive thing about our visit) and ask her to get the manager for me. Ironically, she told me they didn't have a manager there right now which was interesting given that my waitress told me she talked to the manager and had agreed to send him out to me. We waited about 30 minutes to speak to the "manager" and the person who finally came out did not seem to be a manager at all. I told him if they weren't going to accept my gift card then they need to call an actual manager because I paid for the gift card. We waited another 10-15 minutes and the waitress finally came back (after ignoring us for about 45 minutes) and said they accepted the gift card. I told her I was not happy with her attitude or service and that she should have come back to check on us during that ridiculous wait to speak to a "manager". She didn't apologize at all and still had a terrible attitude. After today's experience, we will never return to this Sugar Factory. Our overall experience was bad enough that my daughter who never complains about anything told me I should post a review about our experience and said the waitress tonight was the worst waitress she has ever had. read more
