Karaoke from any place in the joint!

I don't typically like any bar scene - especially so with most gay bars - mainly because the balance of fun, flirt, comfort, and acceptance rarely happen. This is particularly the case in NYC. Blessedly, this is FAR from the case (from what I've experienced) at Suite (caveat: I was there on a quiet night. But the staff set the tone, and these staffers are awesome. So I'd be willing to go back during peak times). Affordable drinks, love the dichotomy of their "loungey left" and "bar right" set up, cut WEE stage, decent bathrooms, super affordable drinks (and well-mixed L.I.I.T.'s!), and right next door to Bombay Frankie, WIT a window to bring in food so you don't even have to step outside. Give 'em a whirl!

Went to Suite once and had a good time. My partner, on the other hand, was there numerous times before we even met. He always had a great time. The bartenders still remembered him! I enjoyed it. We had some nice drinks, good conversation, and even enjoyed the drag show. Will I ever go back? Likely not. It's full of Columbia students and I have a personal rule about drinking around them. Maybe I'll give it a try during the off season (again).

Well...I trekked Uptown to this place to see if I was missing anything. I wasn't. Let's see: 1) Waay too small and not enough seating. 2) WORST drag show EVER. I thought that "drag" meant that they were in woman's clothing and not that it meant a commentary on the quality of the show. Dull, verbose and the worst part...not very FUN. 3) The waitstaff was friendly...but it didn't detract from the general crappiness of the place. If you live up that way...go. If not....I'd say PASS.

This fantastically grungy place is fueled by a mix of thumping beats, leather harnesses, and shirtless men. Even at its busiest, the vibe stays open, fun, and surprisingly well organized. The Wednesday before thanksgiving is apparently known for being the busiest night at the Eagle, and this year's record crowd should have sunk the whole operation, but the staff kept the entire production going smoothly like it was rehearsed. The Eagle's security team deserves direct credit. They managed an impossibly massive crowd without a hitch. Even with thousands trying to get in, the kilometric entrance line and the coat check line that stretched to the roof moved smoothly and never descended into chaos. Dan in particular handled a near-impossible task: recovering my smartwatch from a crowd so packed I had assumed it was gone for good. He somehow retrieved it, safeguarded it, and returned it to me with the utmost professionalism. Music is solid. The vibe is leather and musk. The inclusivity is not just tag line but a daily practice. This bar deserves every positive review on this app. Ignore the haters. Peace!

In a HUGELY positive way! I got a breakfast burger with all the works, we're talking tomatoes lettuce, egg, etc. was it messy? Yes, but in a good way. It's all you can drink so baby drink up. And don't even get me started on the queens. Yes the place is semi smaller in comparison to maybe other drag brunches but that works in YOUR favor. The intimacy results in more attention for you! The queens were amazing, unique, and took personal requests.

When you walk in, you're in the original Rise space (still don't know how we used to pack in there like sardines every weekend). Head right and you'll hit Shine Lounge, which they added after expanding during COVID. They've got one of the best happy hours in the area--BOGO every day from 4-9pm. You get a card and can even use it on another visit if you don't finish it (just don't forget to tip). The doorman is super friendly and instantly recognizable by his voice.. if you know, you know. But they are strict about IDs, so don't even try it. Friday and Saturday nights are packed wall-to-wall, and somehow every night out ends here. Sunday Funday? Same story. They've got drag almost every night (except Fri/Sat), free bingo on Tuesdays, and honestly one of the best drag brunches in the city with fun themes. Food's served till 10 too. As nightlife in NYC keeps changing, Rise feels like one of the few spots that's always gonna be there.

They each had bags for inspection. I did not. I showed my ID to the man and was permitted inside. I stood watching through the door and wondered what was taking so long. Finally I saw my boyfriend calmly gesturing for me to come back out. The man had very gruffly told my boyfriend "no, you go over to the side" - whatever that means - re: his bag. Nasty. It's not against the law for people to have bags and backpacks. You'd think it was the inconvenience of a lifetime to inspect them. My boyfriend comes right from work. My friend had come in from Connecticut. They needed their bags. They didn't mind them being checked at all. They tolerated the large helping of attitude. When I walked back through the door, I saw my friend and the doorman pushing and shoving each other. It was a full-on assault. Other people were watching and horrified. Apparently, my friend had two water bottles in his bag and wasn't permitted to take them in. He simply asked if he could leave them at the front. The doorman said, "I'm not gonna babysit your water!" Wrong. The thing to say is, "You're free to leave them, but I can't be held responsible for them." The both of them had had enough of the attitude and decided we would all just go somewhere else, and said so and turned to leave. Right as my boyfriend gestured for me to come out, the doorman grabbed my friend with both hands and shoved him. My friend is a gentle person and battles a great deal of anxiety. He did not provoke this attack. My boyfriend saw the whole thing with his own eyes. It made absolutely no sense. My friend was completely rattled for hours. We spent the evening trying to help him come down from the adrenaline and shock to his system. Was this a homophobic attack? If so, Flex should be aware of who they have in their employ. Yet it really doesn't matter what the motivation was. It was brutal and it was wrong, plain and simple. My friend's water didn't disturb a single patron that night. The doorman's attack on him did. It was outrageous. What's more? My friend is the most generous tipper anyone could meet. He treats bartenders like they do God's work. Now none of us would ever go back. Why would we? We moved on to Flaming Saddles where the doorman and bartenders were lovely to us in spite of a swelling Saturday night crowd. They were sensitive to my friend and helped replace some of our night's ugliness with kindness. Beware of Flex. Go at your own risk.
