Meanwhile, my bestie is a professional singer in a famous band so you know how that goes...she rocks the karaoke. We've been going to Planet Rose for years and they manage to maintain the same fun vibes, they don't skip a beat. Whatever their formula is, it's working. Visited from Seattle and wanted a public-style karaoke bar (as opposed to a private room situation) and this was fantastic. Definitely dive-y. Definitely chaotic. But silly and fun and good energy--which is what karaoke is all about to me. The staff did a good job serving a very crowded bar and the wait to sing was actually not too bad, considering how busy it was. Came here for the karaoke around midnight on a friday and it was packed, def needed to wait like 45 minutes before our song even came on but it's a total vibe watching people karaoke (you can't hear their voice THAT well which is a good thing) and you're all drunkenly singing along. There's a big room with seating so if you're lucky you might be able to sit there. There's a photo booth which doesn't really seem to work as far as payment but you can take pictures just fine. There's two bathrooms. The drinks were just OK - it's not that kind of place - just get drunk and sing. It can get very crowded, if you can come earlier on a weekday you might find a more intimate group. If you want to just get lost in the crowd, come later when everyone's drunk and can't see you haha. read more

I had one of my best nights in New York here last saturday night. The vibes were great, the staff were extremely nice, and i know i will be bringing my friends back for another great night. I would really like to thank the Blonde bartender who was wearing a blue shirt (i forgot her name ) because of how welcoming she was to me and my friends. As many NYC people probably know, theres a LOT of power tripping in bars/clubs by bouncers and bartenders who are just straight up a**holes. I rarely experience the kind of customer service i received from the Planet Rose staff and i would like to thank all of them for making saturday one of the best nights i have ever had in nyc! Took a trip to NYC, was looking for a place to sing karaoke. First of all this place smelled AWFUL. It smelled like sweat and body odor and the smell was very strong and impossible to avoid. Then, the performers singing did not have a stage to perform on. People just sit at the bar or wherever while they sing their songs and no one really pays attention. The bartender was not polite or welcoming. It was not good vibes overall. We decided to go to Iggy's instead which was a 15 minute Uber ride - definitely recommend that place if you're looking for good karaoke in NYC. 0/10 would not recommend Planet Rose it smells terrible and has weird atmosphere read more

I visited Planet Rose twice while in town for a little solo trip to New York from DC. Missy (owner) and Tania were extremely welcoming and the crowd was generally friendly and fun. The place felt pretty spacious but still had a divey feel (in the best way!) and the karaoke queue actually was pretty efficient considering the list size. I've been going to karaoke bars all over the country (and some other countries) for over 20 years, and this is hands down my favorite one of all time. It's also my favorite bar in the East Village. Very few other places around here have managed to retain that gritty yet communal island of misfit toys vibe over the years that first made me fall in love with this neighborhood. I hope PR remains a bastion of that piece of lower Manhattan, forever. The cross cultural diversity and 'be yourself, everyone's welcome so long as they're not a d*ick' attitude exuded by both the staff and the other patrons represents everything that drew me to the city. Every time I go in there, not only is the karaoke itself a good time, but I also get to chat with super interesting folx in the kind of hyped up atmosphere that can only be created by a bunch of people all in a great f*cking mood because they're somewhere they love doing something they love to do. I've met artists, actors, entrepreneurs, local R&B powerhouses, retired ministers, career gutterpunks, Mexican lgbtqia TikTok celebs, music theater goths, rap sensations, corporate phishheads, and woo girl bachelorettes with cold feet and a crush on their maid of honor. I could go on forever... Despite the super eclectic crowd, I never feel judged for what I pick to sing. Everyone's there to have a good time. No one's there to yuck your yum. If they don't like your selection or your voice is off that night, they don't give a sh*t. In fact, a lot of them will still sing along, clap and cheer at the end, knowing when it's time for them to grab the mic, they'll get the same kind of support while they let their own freak flag fly. That kind of an environment doesn't just 'happen.' This tone is actively set, led, and fostered by the fantastic owner and staff (and a small troupe of rotating regulars who've obviously been going there for years and love helping new people feel welcome in their home away from home). I feel so weird calling them the "owner and staff," like it's f*cking upstairs / downstairs at Downton Abbey or some sh*it, but I can't just call out just one person or two, because they are ALL f*cking rad and they ALL create this environment. It's so entertaining to read the negative reviews of PR, because I've been there and watched people come in who write those types of reviews. They barge in with nasty or standoffish attitudes and treat the staff and other patrons like they're beneath them. They argue about showing ID, like entitled children. Sure, Chad, the bar should definitely risk their license to break the law for *you.* They expect to be served right away, just because there's no visible "line." So sorry, bro, this staff is experienced and tuned in enough that they remember who ordered what drink and in what order, so no one has to anxiously hover by them while they make anything like you have to do at the amateur hour places you frequent. They assume that just because there are 'only 20 people' in there that night, they're somehow magically going to be 5th to sing. Nope. While you were off elsewhere, these 20 people have been here for four hours buying drinks and supporting the bar. They have multiple song requests in and are patiently awaiting their upcoming turns. Again, the vibe is 'everyone's welcome so long as they're not a d*ick.' If you don't feel welcome, and all the other *obviously separate and very diverse* groups of people having a blast look like one giant 'clique' to you, then maybe you're the problem, Chad. I'm not a big drinker, but any place with $4 mix drink happy hours is a place for me! Came here recently when a friend of a friend invited me to a gathering. Said friend wasn't there, so I sat at the bar. A true introvert, I decided to get a drink to wind down...and what, free songs until 10? Hand me the book. The biggest test of how great a karaoke bar is is based on how good their song books are. I must say they had my favorites and then some. I love that you can sing at the bar or sing on the wraparound couches just around the corner. There are screens everywhere and you don't have to stand if you don't want to. As the night progressed (and got hazy) the place filled up, so it was like one big party full of karoake loving people. It's the kind of place where karaoke is available for laughs and entertainment, but the mics aren't turned up all the way so you can still have a great time when someone with a hideous voice* is singing. 2. Johnny. He's the man, and if you don't have fun when he's bartending, you're the problem. He also knows the number of my wife's favorite karaoke song off the top of his head, which is pretty impressive. Johnny makes Planet Rose feel like home, but with singing. 3. The other patrons. This place attracts a shockingly diverse clientele, from woo girls to sad drunks* to neighborhood characters to talented artists that walked right off the Broadway stage. Planet rose is my favorite karaoke bar in the city, and as a fellow bartender I hate to write this review but I was so horrified by how I was treated tonight by a staff member I have to say something. This woman should legitimately be fired. A woman that works there (mid 40's, curly brown hair, stank face and attitude) has a husband who was singing "New York, New York", he was a fantastic singer and got the entire place excited (post pandemic NY! Great choice!) the ENTIRE place was filming this gentleman and cheering. I took one quick video of the room to post to Instagram saying "i love my city" - it was mostly of the crowd, not of this woman's husband. She immediately rushes up to me and ONLY me and demands I delete "the video of her husband". The vitriol in her voice and face - I legit thought she was going to beat me up. She proceeds to loudly talk about me and argue with her husband about me, as if I have personally done something wrong. This hateful woman continues to stare me down the entire night while loudly speaking rudely about me. My night was literally ruined and I left before singing because this woman made me so unbelievably uncomfortable. For the record, I am a lesbian and was there with my GIRLFRIEND! I understand I'm more attractive than her but, really? I don't care about your husband!!!! This woman literally should not be in customer service, particularly at such a fabulous location that I believe is 5 star worthy. Again, I'm a 10 year NYC bartender. This woman needs to go. She ruined my first night back to karaoke from the pandemic. I was so happy to be there only to be s*** on by this hateful creature. I was so disappointed. Planet Rose isn't perfect but I didn't have a bad night here, though after reading some of the reviews it seems like the crazy long time it took for my ONE song to play maybe had to do with me not being a regular. Also not thrilled to see some of the newer reviews. It doesn't effect my experience but seeing a consensus start to emerge about the unfriendliness of the place makes me think I just got lucky. I was there for three hours and only got to sing one song (it wasn't crowded). I didn't really care, I was waiting for someone and wanted to kill some time, so I figured I'd focus on singing instead of drinking. I made friends with a random group, which was easy to do, people were friendly. Maybe making friends was the reason I got to sing! My main issue was with the mics. I can belt out one or two pretty good, but the mic I got was not working, everyone who got it knew it and people were jockeying for the good one. After one song I scraped my vocal cords dry trying to scream into the damn thing. Couldn't have made a night of it had I stayed. What's the point in going to a karaoke bar if every aspect of singing is so messed up it prevents you from singing lol? I love the decor. Gaudy kitsch, animal prints and cheap velvet with Christmas lights. But I basically just sat there and existed while other people sang, so I probably won't be coming back for that. read more

This is a work event! A colleague of mine and I met up for a drink in Chinatown and he told me we had to make a quick work-related stop at 6pm before heading to Brooklyn to lose in a shuffleboard tournament. We entered this Karaoke lounge, he laughed, bought me a shot and we each sang two songs to an empty room. It was glorious. I came back later that night, a couple of dinners and many drinks later and the place was full. I sang two more songs, somehow better than earlier that evening. Close your eyes when you walk in, this place is the dive of all dives! I watched a few ladies hold on to their name brand purses for deal life. I have been here a few times now, and I always have a great time. The list is decent, but a bit old. The drinks are really strong; always a crowd pleaser. You might even see an American Idol reject in the crowd douching it up on the dance floor with a mic in hand! A few professional karaoke-goers grace the place, and sing a few songs to please our ears. They are a tough act to follow. A great karaoke bar in the E. Village. Keeping it classy with zebra-print suede couches and some pink strobe lights, it's a legit karaoke spot guaranteed for good times. A group of 10 of us came here this past Saturday night after dining @ Nai Tapas for a girl friend's birthday. Birthday girl looooves karaoke! So we ventured here for some singing tunes. We arrived at around 9pm on a Saturday night - and I highly recommend coming at this time if you want to guarantee some couch space. The place started filling up quickly afterwards. The bar has several rooms so numerous groups could come in and enjoy their own space. This karaoke bar is so interactive - which is so cool. Because there is no stage for singing, it felt like one huge sing-a-long at times!!! Each song request is $2; you select your song of choice from a hefty book of songs and you write your selection on a classy sticky-note. Love it! You hand it to the karaoke jams-manager and he calls your name and puts the song on the wide screen tv's in each of the bar rooms when it's your turn. Because there is no stage, you can sing from any part of the karaoke bar - sitting, standing, whatevs - and if you choose a popular tune that's guaranteed to be known by the crowd, you better believe everyone will be singing along with you!! When the song selection came on for "Hey-Ya" by Outkast, every person in the room was singing! Pretty cool thing to see :) Beers were fairly priced - I ordered a few Blue Moon bottles for $6 / each. Hard not to compare this to one of my longtime favorites, Baby Grand. I would say that this place has almost the same sense of intimacy and community as Baby Grand with a slightly more spacious area. and perhaps this place takes itself just a little less seriously. They're the same in terms of not having taps for beer, they only sell bottles. I would say a space the size of Planet Rose has less of an excuse not to have at least 1 or 2 taps available. Unlike Baby Grand, there is no stage. You just sort of stand or sit wherever you happen to be, or you can hover awkwardly in the middle with the wireless mic. If you like your karaoke to be a performance, this may not be great for you. In addition, the volume of the backing track can be inaudible at times. It would be really nice if there was an impromptu stage where the backing track is played a little louder if you're on it. That would go a long, long way. Also unlike Baby Grand, karaoke doesn't cost money per song, so that's great. That tends to add up over time at BG. On the whole, on my very first and only visit, Planet Rose instantly became one of my favorite karaoke dives in NYC. It's that great mix of casual, embracing community combined with a space that doesn't take itself too seriously. I'll certainly be back. read more

Can I just say that I love Karaoke and this place just made me love it even more! My co-workers and I came here last Thursday for a Secret Santa gift exchange. When I first walked in, the lights were dimmed. The bartender was cool and got our drinks to us pretty quickly. We took the party room in the back since there were so many of us. That party room almost made me feel like I was in outer space. There were little specks of light dancing everywhere. As soon as the drinks took effect, we began choosing songs and requesting them by the bar. The song book is IMMENSE! They have almost all the hit songs you can think of from the 80s to now. I heard they even make special requests if they don't have the songs you want. I didn't have to wait too long to sing and everyone was having a blast. When we left, our voices were hoarse. Came here on NYE so the place was a little crowded but not too bad. Really cool looking place - zebra print couches, string lights on the ceiling, and they even had some Christmas decorations up. The bartenders were very nice but the drinks were only okay. For example, one of the drinks I got was a vodka cranberry and I didn't even pay attention to which vodka was used but regardless, I didn't even taste cranberry. The drink was actually strong! Which is great, but the vodka was pretty shitty so that made for a crap drink. The karaoke here made for a fun time with friends and even if you don't wanna go up there and do a solo, you can always sing along and just have a good time. One thing I will say, is the drinks are pretty cheap which is a huge plus being in the city! Vibe was overall pretty chill and I had a good time. read more

Planet Rose is an off beat karaoke bar, sporting zebra print seats, dark ambiance, and nice bartenders. Waking into Planet Rose you get a sense that it's a small place. There is a couch in front but it's not really going to help a large party. Keep waking past the bar though and you'll see a nice common room with larger couches and plenty of space to get your diva on. Beers are moderately priced at $6 dollars but all they have are bottles, no taps. That's a bummer. The bartenders are very nice though. Karaoke is free. There are some places you'll have to drink to get a karaoke ticket, but here the two aren't tied to each other. If you're in the area and looking to karaoke def stop in. If you're priority is the drinking, look elsewhere. read more
