We visited Sula Indian restaurant. We haven't had East indian food for a while, so, we were very excited to visit this popular restaurant. Decor was very beautiful and ambience had exotic south Asian atomosphere. What we ordered: Dahi Puri- Stuffed crispy wheat puri shells, potato, roasted cumin, sweet cardamom yogurt Butter Chicken - Tandoor grilled chicken in tomato, cream, fenugreek, butter sauce Tandoori Naan Baingan Bharta - Tandoor roasted purple eggplant, mashed, finished with tomatoes & green peas North Indian Chicken Biryani (Gf) Tender pieces of chicken cooked with spiced basmati rice, infused with saffron, mint, and North Indian spices. Dahi Puri was great. As server's advised, it is better to have them immediately, otherwise shell texture would be soggy. It was perfectly crispy, yogurt filling was paired so well, one of the best item of the dinner. Butter chicken was very mild as requested. It had rich buttery flavor and delicious. Biryani was so delicious, too! Large chicken pieces were a nice surprise and flavor was very strong, it was very good to have rice with yogurt as server's advice. it balanced the spice. Naan was very decent, nicely chewy and soft texture. Baigan Bharta had very spicy and bold flavor. If you like spicy item, you will love this. Mashed eggplant and tomato combination was good. It was good to have it with Naan. Overall, It was a great experience. Hands down the best indian food I've had yet! The portion sizes were huge snd everything was so flavorful without being too overpowering. Definitely recommend getting the vegetable samosas! The butter chicken was creamy and the tandoori chicken was tender. The service is great and food came out within 10 minutes. Definitely make a reservation here as it gets full especially on weekends. Came here on a weekend afternoon and managed to catch happy hour. Some pretty good deals with a variety of appetizers. We ordered the Dahi Puri, Chicken 65, and Mughalai Paneer. The paneer was definitely a standout and I'd have it again. Service was friendly and food came out pretty fast. read more

Visited during lunch on a weekend and no reservation was needed. I am not sure if the cuisine here is authentic, I liked their curry and appreciate that the foods were well presented. Overall I enjoyed the vibes at this place and would visit again for nice decor and excellent service. I would mention that the ladies bathroom was not up to par that day. The bathroom door was prompted wide open with a huge humidifier in front of the door. I am guessing it has to be kept running but the size of the appliance made the bathroom felt very cramped and definitely took away the privacy level. Hopefully the situation is rectified and doesn't take away the meal experience at Sula. I haven't been to other Sula locations but this is a convenient location on Commercial Drive with paid street parking available. read more

Came here for to celebrate my partner's birthday because he loves Indian food and we had heard that Sula is one of the best. They have 3 locations but we visited their Commercial Drive location - it's not very close to the skytrain but it's still a good location. We went on a Thursday night and had gotten reservation prior, I would say it was pretty crowded considering it was a weekday. Their ambiance was amazing!! The paintings and artifcats on the walls were gorgeous. For drinks - we got their Kingfisher which is an Indian beer that we love and their blueberry bourbon which was sweet and sour. We loved the cocktail! Would definitely come back to try some of their ones as they looked so good. For appies we got their guvava golgappe - as someone who LOVES golgappe, I did not like the twist of guvava in there but other on the table thought it wasn't too bad. I would say their bread selection was pretty good and the quantities were pretty big! We specially loved their laccha parathas. They also gave us complimentary dessert and their chai pistachio cake for my partner's birthday. They also played happy birthday on the piona which was so sweet! I would say the chai pistachio dessert is a MUST TRY!!! I would come back just for that. Customer service was top notch as well :) super glad I chose this place for his birthday. read more

Sula's was so good that my bf and i didn't talk for the first 30 minutes because we were eating so good. The butter chicken with garlic naan was absolutely incredible. A very romantic vibe... the lighting was so nice, food was delicious, and lots of beautiful decor to appreciate. I decided to take a friend for an impromptu late lunch during Dine Out Vancouver at this restaurant on Commercial Street. We both love Indian food, so the Dine Out set menu seemed like a great choice. The food presentation and taste were solid, and the portion sizes were decent. However, the overall experience was slightly marred by poor service and an uncomfortable seating arrangement. We were seated at a tiny corner table, despite the fact that the restaurant was nearly empty--fewer than three tables were occupied when we arrived. As someone with years of experience in the food industry, I could immediately tell that the seating could have been handled better. My friend is quite tall, and I'm not much shorter, so the tight seating made it difficult to enjoy our meal. To make matters worse, the small table was overcrowded with two water glasses, a jug of water, and side plates. We had to put our water jug on a neighboring table and our jackets on the adjacent chairs, as there was no space. The maitre d' and servers should have noticed the situation and offered us a more comfortable table, especially since the dining room was not busy. While the staff did check in a couple of times to ask how things were, the service felt rushed. At one point, the server spilled food and a fork while clearing the table, and then immediately brought the POS machine without offering coffee or Chai. And we were offered only one dessert (Mango Coconut Cake) as they had no Rose Milk Cake (Cardamom Saffron Rabdi). I've visited this location before and had a better experience, but this visit left me feeling disappointed. To the management: please educate your staff on seating arrangements and customer comfort. A little attention to detail would go a long way in making the dining experience more enjoyable. read more

I recently attended one of the dining events (Paint Night) hosted by Sula at the Commercial Drive location and as this was my first time attending a combined food/event experience, I was quite excited and looking forward to it. I would like to preface that I didn't pay for tickets to the event as we won the Instagram giveaway instead. This was my first time at any of the Sula locations and the décor was quite subtle and felt welcoming. The event was scheduled from 6-830pm and we arrived a few minutes prior to the start time. When we spoke to the hostess, we were told the area was still being set up and were seated at a table while we waited which was appreciated instead of having to wait in the lobby area. When the event started and seated, the staff quickly asked us if we would like to select our dishes for the night. There was a print out menu at each seat with 4 courses. Two starters were already pre-determined and we were asked to select our mains. This was to allow the kitchen able to plan accordingly and this was a good sign as it showed the staff had a process. We were also asked about ordering drinks and on the menu, there was two drink selections with a cost associated with it. I will come back to this. Once all participants of the event arrived, the artist introduced herself and walked through the painting we will all be working on that night. What was missing was there was no representative from the restaurant introducing the artist or welcoming participants to the event. Considering Sula was hosting the event, the expectation was that there would be someone to say a few words on behalf of the restaurant, discuss the dishes that night or highlight what to expect from the event. The atmosphere was as if the restaurant rented the space to the artist and their responsibility ended there. The first two dishes arrived quite quickly while we painted. Unfortunately, after the second dish, there was a very long lag before the third dish finally came out. It was close to an hour wait and after checking my watch, it was close to 9pm when the food arrived. As it was getting late, some people ate quite quickly as they were hungry and as for myself, my appetite has just left at this point. The last course for the night was dessert and due to length of time waiting for the food, I asked for the dessert to be packed up instead. I noticed that many of the participants also asked for their dessert to-go as well but some folks did finish the last dish. When it was time to go, I asked one of the staff whether I needed to pay for the drink. The reason for the question is because I noticed some people who ordered a drink left without paying. The server mentioned they needed to ask the manager as they weren't sure. At the end of the meal, I paid for the drink and left. It's unfortunate there was no one specific person from the restaurant that participants could go to with questions. As for the food, they tasted fine. They weren't cold but definitely didn't taste as they were freshly made. Instead it seemed like they were sitting on a counter for a while before it was brought out to everyone. I am happy that I didn't pay for this event ($99+tax - this cost includes dinner, the artist's fee and supplies) and I'm hesitant to attend another one. With the lack of organization and extremely long wait for the food, the event didn't have enough highlights for me to want to recommend to anyone. read more

While the ambience is not as nice as the Main Street location, the staff are so kind and helpful. I placed a to go order, and it was fulfilled in a timely manner. The takeout food is just as good as it is in the restaurant. The Daal Makhani, Channa Saag, and Roti are real standouts! I got all of the entrées vegan, and they were amazing. If you are lactose intolerant and butter/dairy do not sit well with your stomach, Sula does not skimp on flavor when it comes to their vegan dishes! read more

I've come to Sula about 4-5 times now, and everytime I visit, the dishes really hit the spot! We made reservations, so we were seated right away. I'm not sure how fast walk-ins would be. To start, the potato and pea samosas were crispy and full of flavour. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the samosas - took half of it home for the next day. The chana masala that came with it was so delicious! So much depth and spice in flavour. I will definitely be back to have this dish alone. I enjoyed the cilantro chutney; not so much of the other one that was sweeter, but that is personal preference. The Tikka masala had a lot of depth in flavour as well. It was spicy, savoury, and creamy, with a hint of sweetness to round it out. Paired with freshly buttered naan, it was such a treat. Service was decent, although sometimes it took awhile to get the attention of a staff member. Portion sizes are good, given the heaviness of curries. I always think I can eat more than I actually do! Sula is my favourite Indian restaurant on the Drive. I always get the chicken tikka masala and my partner chooses the other dish. This time around she chose the chickpea curry! The chicken tikka masala here is divine! I don't get the butter chicken because it's not to my liking here.. too sweet. It comes with an adequate amount of chicken and the flavour is delicious. The mild spice is a little too mild for me, so maybe get medium if what you really want is mild! The chickpea curry was really good as well. Perfectly cooked - the chickpeas weren't too soft for a soft mouth, and the flavours of the spice combination are great. The julienned ginger on top was edible as well - wasn't too strong to eat raw! Ate both with garlic naan, but could've went for plain naan as the garlic didn't add much to these. Service is always amazing when I go. The ambiance is nice but it can get loud as there are usually a lot of large parties around when we go. It's quite dark in there as well. read more

One of the things I found out about Vancouver is the eclectic cuisine, especially the Asian cuisines. I enjoyed it so much that I sought it out at almost every meal turn that I got. That includes this Indian restaurant. Generous portions of meat with plenty of flavor, some really tasty drinks, a delicious Gulab jamun, it really works well for anytime. My only gripe is the lack of free naan. I got it as an appetizer and it is fairly cheap, but it is delicious. I want all the naan my stomach can handle. That pillowy cooked dough that can clean up any mess is just perfect every time. It should not cost me anything to have on the table. Naan on the table is like free bread at an Italian restaurant, or chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant, or crispy wonton noodles at a Chinese restaurant, it has to be there. I heard through the grapevine that this place was super worth it! I went to the Main street location at first and was absolutely windblown by the Samosa Ragda Chaat. One day, I was walking around the Commercial area and stumbled across the other location! The sandwich board caught my eye, and I instantly remembered the amazing flavours of the chaat, I could not resist! Upon walking in, I felt so ... * at peace *. There is a water fountain inside, beautiful paintings on the walls, plants, and warm comforting colours. It was very quiet (there was no one there on a Wednesday afternoon), so all you could hear was the calming sound of the fountain. Wow. I was like "I can't be happier right now and I havent even started eating yet!" I sat down near the window so there was plenty of natural light in my area. I ordered the Samosa Ragda Chaat, naan, and chai. Let me tell you that chaat is honestly a perfect food. It's spicy, savoury, sweet, crunchy, creamy, all in 1 dish! What blows my mind is how it's topped with pomegranate. It is an incredibly bright and unique flavour. The dish overall is so balanced and just incredibly delicious. I would eat it every day. The serving size is very generous and I was able to pack half of it to take home. Hands down, amazing food and fast friendly service. I have nothing but positive things to say about Sula! I came to Sula Indian Restaurant for a work lunch and they were very accommodating of our large group. Originally I had picked something off their dine in street food menu but then they said it wasn't available so decided to go with the lamb biryani instead. Overall I found the dish a little bit too spicy for my liking and I may have to ask for less spice the next time around. The yogurt did help and I thought that the lamb was soft and delicious. I made a reservation for the patio at Main Street location and asked to be moved inside when it turned out to be cold but they couldn't seem to manage to do so. Nice dark decor, beautiful menus. Chicken Tikka tenders appetizer was a little bland and disappointing. However the chicken Tikka Masala entree was very good, and the butter chicken was rich and satisfying. Even the side dish of rice was beautifully presented. Service was slow, and then they asked us to limit our stay to two hours before they brought us the bill, which was unusual. This place is sooo hyped we had to try it. We came in on a Saturday afternoon. We ordered: Vadapav sliders: they were okay! The vada itself lacked flavor and could use more chutney and spice. Vegetable Kadai: the vegetables definitely needed to be cooked more. They were still raw and crunchy. Manglorean chicken: this was good but it just tastes like your basic chicken tikka curry. Was expecting something very different. Filter coffee: very watered down and I wanted more flavor I gave it two stars because the ambience was nice (I loved the decor and outdoor seating layout) and the servers was super kind. I didn't try any of the cocktails but they looked really delicious! If I was to return I would definitely update my review to include those. read more

Solid Indian place on Commercial Drive. Looks like they've been around for a few years. Parking is available on the narrow side streets. The place is quite Food is a wee bit pricier, but the quality is there and the portions are nice and big. I was ready to explode. Great value. I tried their chicken and lamb curries. This place gives the word "hot" justice. Most other places around town suck in this department (their "hot" dishes are more like medium/mild in my books), but the food here had a decent amount of heat. With that said, a bit more would be nice. Decent amount of meat, and goes well with naan and rice (not included). Special mention goes to their garlic naan. Nice and moist but not covered in grease. This thing was a bit smaller than a cafeteria tray. More than enough to wipe up all the curry sauce. The samosas are one of the bigger ones, but they were definitely on the pricier size. Comes with sauces (sweet brown, tangy green, spicy orange). Personally I'd skip these, as the regular food items are more than enough for gorging oneself. I will definitely be back. We went there for dinner on a rainy evening, luckily the food, the ambiance and the service elevated our spirits. We ordered a bunch of vegetarian and non vegetarian items and they were equally delicious. We especially enjoyed the vada pav in the appetizers, all the main course items were a hit too bhindi masala, butter chicken, daal makhani. Oh and a special shout out to the Tamarind mazcal cocktail, desi and delicious. I also want to mention our very cordial server Misha, who was very informative and kind even though the kids were pretty noisy. A wonderful dining experience! I'll start by saying that we've been going to Sula on Main Street for years and absolutely love it. In a previous review I gave it 4 stars. However my experience at the Commercial Street location was highly disappointing. First, floor is slippery, perhaps from the grease in the air that settles on the floor. How did I know that? One of our guests slipped on the floor and almost fell. When we told the staff, they showed no compassion at all. Through the night, food and drinks were late to arrive, wrong orders delivered, and the food generally was mediocre. Appies great but chicken 65 dry and over cooked. Mains just didn't have the flavors and depth I've become accustomed to with this restaurant. Truth be told if this wasn't Sula, I wouldn't give it a second try. But I've been super happy with the Main Street restaurant so I'll keep patronizing that location. Hopefully the Commercial Street location can raise its game. read more

While the food and presentation is good, we were disappointed that there wasn't really any aspect of fusion to the food. It just felt like an ordinary menu but done well ! 3.5/5 is the score I'd give if we could give 0.5s! Stepped into a busy and bustling restaurant with a nice ambience. Staff was friendly and accommodating (more on that later!). We ordered the spinach paneer and lamb korma curries, potato naan, and chicken biryani, which came with a side of raita. Favourites were the potato naan and raita. Potato naan was flavourful, and the raita was probably one of the best raita's I've had in a while as it was thick and creamy and not watery like the ones normally served on the side. We got medium for the curries and mild for the biryani. Unfortunately I felt like the dishes were more westernized, as they were not spicy and lacked certain flavour profiles that I'm used to with Indian food (like cumin and star anise). We informed our server and he was very accommodating. They added some more spices to our dishes, gave us hot sauce on the side and also offered us complimentary gulab jamun. We drove up from Seattle and ate lunch at Sula two days ago. Because we live in Microsoft Country, we are very well-versed with authentic Indian cuisine. We ordered three main dishes (saag aloo, bindi and bharta) and all three were spectacular. Many restaurants make their saag with the consistency of toothpaste and all the spinach pulverized. YUK! Sula didn't do that and we could see the spinach, which is the way we love it. It was a surprise that rice was not included with the entrees and we had to pay extra for it.
