Hole in the wall ghetto Indian takeout place along Commercial. Don't let the dumpy looks fool you. Parking is available on the side streets. The window bar seating is now a takeout counter. Staff were friendly. Selection is pretty good here. They have meat, seafood, and vegetarian. Something for everybody. Special mention for their mango chicken. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it hit the spot. This place does their spicy food well. Decent amount of heat (hot option) but nothing overwhelming. I also had the lamb kadai. It's been too long since we've had Indian food so we decided to try Tandoori Palace. They cook a mix of Indian and Pakistan food. You'll find them next door to Tatsu Japanese Bistro. We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 6:30pm). A lot of people were getting takeout but there are an abundance of seats inside. You order and pay first before sitting down. Water is self serve. Menu is behind the counter; tandoori, chicken, seafood, lamb and vegetarian dishes. All dishes come with either basmati rice or naan. - Saag paneer ($12.00) - we went with the naan. Paneer was tasty but would have liked a little more. The spinach was more chunky, rough chopped than usual. Naan was standard fare. - Chicken tikka masala ($13.00) - we opted for the basmati rice. The used to cook everything separately, meaning they USED to clean the pots/pans after each dish properly Now they mix it all without washing. This is a delivery review. The food had a good flavour, and the chicken korma was flavourful (though the sauce was different than I'm used to). My three problems with my order were that 1. They called to let me know they couldn't make chilli chicken (though it's on the menu), 2. The portions were subpar as other have noted. They didn't fill the contained and each dish had only 8 SMALL pieces of chicken. And 3. The naan was average and not much better than store bought and home-warmed. I'd order again in a pinch but know there are better places in town to order for delivery'. Pros: actually very good flavour. They did call after an online order to ask if I'd like to substitute for something they couldn't make, and the chicken in the korma was nicely cooked, kebab white meat. My recommendations: 1. Have the ingredients you need to make your menu, or change the menu. 2. Fill your take out dishes. For $50 for two mains and an app we should have lots of left overs. Use thighs, too. And 3. The portion is very generous, and you can either share it with a friend or pack the leftovers home if you are a small eater. The food is tasty and I like that they do not tone down the heat of the spice at all. The place is not very big and service is friendly. Help yourself to water at the counter while waiting for your food. It has a homely feel in this hole in the wall Indian food. I have not been disappointed with the dishes I tried so far. Ended up at this place while walking around during the closing hours of Commercial Drive's participation of "Car Free Vancouver Day". The prices are pretty decent for Vancouver standards. First the best part. They make their own NAAN! It's "baked to order". We were waiting quite a while for our take out dishes that we decided to eat it right there instead. The Butter Chicken was very tasty. They use white meat, which I'm not a fan of. But I ended up dipping the freshly baked naan in the sauce itself and that was enough to send me to "Foodie Heaven"*. *Not an actual place, but a state of mind. :) A good vegetable compliment is their Saag Paneer which is spinach and cheese curry dish. It helps break down the more tasty and spicy dishes that you may have ordered so you can go at it again. Yum! TIP: - One dish is enough per person, but it's best to enjoy everything in family-style fashion. - You have a choice of rice or naan with each dish. Skip the rice and go for the oh-so-freshly-baked naan. Seriously. So, why four stars? Service is good, but their mind-set is toward take-out rather than the attentiveness for dine-in customers - which there were a lot when we were there. Tandoori Palace is very unassuming, both inside and out. It's almost like being in someone's dining room... I've been walking past this place for years, thinking how good can a hole in the wall place on Commercial Drive be. It turns out that the answer is "really quite good!". I ordered the Lamb Vindaloo and was warned that it was spicy. This is good, as it is supposed to be quite spicy. And it was! This is the first vindaloo that I've had in Canada that was not a pale, timid shadow of what the dish is supposed to be. But it is not just heat, the flavour is great, you can clearly taste the freshly roasted spices. The next time you have a bad head cold, come here and order the vindaloo. Restaurant ambience was terrible and dirty. Food was over priced like fine-dining but they were no where near fine. I saw flies flying over our food. We ordered the following: 1. Biryani: it was like white rice mixed in a sauce with bell peppers. 2. Tandori chicken: it was dry and tasteless 3. Seekh kabab: They was ok in taste but salty and super dry. 4. Lamb curry: lamb smelled and the sauce was sugary and sweet. We asked for recommendations and lady said, that was the most popular item. She told us, it is not sweet. 5. I've ordered here a few times through doordash and it's been usually pretty good.. they aren't the friendliest when you call in to add something such as if you missed a can of pop or something. Today I ordered at 3:30pm and it took almost 2 hours to receive! I noticed my driver had taken if 30 blocks past my place which is a 5 minute drive from tandoori palace. I tried contacting him and he kept hanging up on me. I called tandoori and they just said " he left 20 minutes ago..call doordash!" and hung up on me. Very rude. Got my food at 5:15pm that I ordered at 3:30pm it was cold and bread was stale. I was so hungry I warmed it up and ate it and it was super salty. More than usual. I feel there's other places to try that have better service and quality. So maybe try a different place as I will too! Also don't suggest using door dash! I won't be. read more

We are so disappointed in our meal as we had high hopes given the great reviews by others. We ordered delivery and it came quite late and cold. There was just one small leg for the tandoori chicken for $11 and it was dry :( Our naan was tough and chewy....tasted old. The samosas had the thickest skin I've seen, that was not crispy and drenched in oil. The butter chicken tasted like they just dumped the sauce you buy from Costco over dry chicken breast meat. FOOD: Delicious. Ordered the lamb saag and butter chicken with some samosas. The saag was great, very rich, as well as the butter chicken. A good portion served on nice plates (for those who care about that). The samosas? They were some of the best I've ever had in my life. Shaped well, flaky but crunchy texture on outside, flavourful and held together on inside. ATMOSPHERE: This part I would give 1 star. The restaurant itself is small - which is fine, great by me even - just wanted to inform. The horrible part was the service of the lady who took my order. She stared very oddly at my girlfriend while I was ordering - she barely even looked at me. It was an odd, off-putting stare. My gf asked me about it when we sat down. Then, after we ate what we could and asked for take out containers, she gave me harsh attitude for the request. Again, off-putting from an employee. I just spent $55 in your restaurant, can I just get a take out container? Lastly, when we left she made ANOTHER remark to my gf, when paraphrased was something to the effect of, "Oh I thought you were not going to stop asking me for things." This was right after I said thanks, have a good night. PRICE: If I'm spending $55 at a small family restaurant, I want to be appreciated as a customer - not spoken to condescendingly. I'd give this place 3.5 stars. It's a total hole in the wall, with no ambiance, so if a whole dining experience is what you're after, skip it. The food, however, was good, and very reasonably priced. My father got the Chicken Vindaloo, which was flavorful and very spicy, just the way he wanted it. My butter chicken was as good as anywhere else I've had it, and cheaper than anywhere but a foodcourt. The veg pakoras were alright, but not worth the price, IMO. The standout was the naan, which came in huge, soft, fresh pieces, and was phenomenal. I highly value ambiance, myself, so I may not be back to this place very often. But I would absolutely recommend it for people who don't care about ambiance as long as the food's good and the price is right. read more

So it looks like I've been wrestling with this place for YEARS now, and it's about time I wrote an update! Recently I've found myself craving simpler Indian food - less heavy cream, and more just solid, homey flavours. My return to the Palace came about one night when I wanted "sort of mediocre" Indian (don't ask, it was what I was in the mood for, ok?!) and I went to order my usual, mutter paneer. I ordered it medium spicy and it was just dandy! The naan is still too thin for my liking, but the price is so reasonable, and includes rice or naan, so it's hard to complain. My next foray came about after I had a long chat with a lovely cab driver on the way back from the airport - he recommended Tandoori Palace and I thought I'd try it again. Well, I have to say it's consistently homey, comfort food. I asked for my mutter paneer hot, and (on the cabbie's recommendation) asked for the naan thicker (why did I not think of this before??) WELL, let me tell you, it was pretty darn great! I really enjoyed my meal and I've definitely become something of a regular here! read more

So I work right across the street from this place, and being that curry is one of my all time favorite foods I've been here a few times. The food is spectacular. As many others have said, the butter chicken is phenomenal and the freshly made naan is great as well. They do have a lot of great vegetarian options as well though. I'm also very impressed with the portion sizes, being that an order of any of their main dishes come with your choice of rice or naan and is enough to last me for two meals. As I stated previously I work right across the street so I will occasionally come here and order food and leave it in the fridge at work for the next days' lunch as well. Sadly, the one thing preventing a five star review is the general condition of the place. While it does seem to have the 'authentic indian' thing going for it, it also always appears messy and unkempt as well as it being rather noisy all the time. This is most likely the closest thing you'll find to "street food" this side of the American continent. I could be wrong about that... Their namesake dish is on point, seared well in their house-tandoor. The naans are nothing less than authentic, with the bubbles and bursts in all the right places. I really like the value for money here, with every order coming with generous sides. Nice, but busy staff. My one criticism is that the restaurant itself is quite dingy and dirty-looking and while that will never stop THIS Indian girl from eating there, it has proved an issue when bringing collegues. I've noticed that people usually eat outside or take out. Some of this place's genuine authenticity comes from its look, but we're not in India anymore, so some semblance of tidiness is somewhat necessary for the maintenance of the average customer's appetite. read more

Some of the best Indian food I've had in the city, at a reasonable price, and they deliver. At the end of a long, hard day, I want Tandoori Palace, and sometimes, I get it. For $25 including tip, I can have two hot dishes, rice, and naan delivered to my front door within 45 minutes, and it'll feed me and my lady friend for two days. I decided to yelp about Tandoori Palace as I am at work right now eating some not so great butter chicken. I'm pretty sure Tandoori Palace has ruined me for all other restaurants. I've been eating here for about 3 years and I must say they are consistently awesome. I always get the butter chicken and naan (I know, I know, I need to expand my horizons!) and it always comes out the same spicy delicious way. The naan is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Its home made and frickin huge! The butter chicken portion is just as big and I've only managed to finish it all a few times. I did take my English friend there once while he was visiting and he swooned over his dishes. Said it better than some of the curries he's had back home. read more

I've been looking for an Indian place for when I get sudden pang for saucy goodness, but other than their freshly baked naan (which I truly appreciated), I'm not sure I'd trek back again. After reading reviews, we decided to give TP a try. Since it was raining outside, we decided to dine in (before we realized that every table but one was bused). It's pretty no frills here and though there are tables for you to sit, you don't order at the table, you order your meal at the counter and choose either rice or naan (get the naan!). We got the butter chicken and shrimp tikka masal. I was already prepared after reading the warning regarding decor. When it comes to great food, I can close one eye to the decor and just focus in on the food, but this place was so unkempt (on a quiet rainy Sunday afternoon when no other patrons showed) and noisy (the cook kept slamming kitchenware around) that I couldn't enjoy my meal. I really can't dig places where the staff seem indifferent to customers or care enough to keep the place clean. We actually took the rest of our meal to enjoy in the comfort of our own home. I feel it's quite pricey for what you're gettin--even for take out. Anyone want to just bring me a stack of freshly baked naan for my butter chicken and tikka masala?
