    Paneer parantha - IG @bougiefoodieboi
    Kyle W.

A Michelin guide Indian restaurant in the Richmond-Vancouver area. We made reservations for an 8:30pm Friday dinner just in case, and it was fairly busy, but as it was near the end of the dinner service, it was not too crowded shortly after. We tried the lamb popsicles with paneer parantha and basmati rice, and Chef Vikram Vij's special flavoured kulfi. For drinks we got the Cambie Whiskey Sour and Modernist Sour. To start, they gave us some complimentary snack and dip to whet our appetite. Then, the food came shortly after. Lamb popsicles were cooked to medium well, but it was very flavorful and the sauce that came with it was super flavorful and well spiced. The paneer parantha was good and the rice is a perfect pairing with the sauce. The kulfi was cardamom based and very smooth. Cocktails were innovative with Indian spices and aesthetic. Modernist Sour was too sour for my liking for the entire drink, and half of the Cambie Whiskey Sour was great with the red wine float but ended up to be too sour as well, so that was a bit of a miss. A sour is sour but not like lemon juice sour - there needs to be a delicate balance of sweetness to make it more easily enjoyable. Service was excellent - the manager of the restaurant invited us to check out the kitchen near the end of the dinner service and the staff were friendly and we got to see what is behind the scenes. It is nowhere near a Michelin star staged kitchen, which is great since it shows the authenticity behind the delicious food being served up. At the end, we concluded with chai on the house which is a nice gesture and finish to the meal. It's great that the chai was not too sweet, my preferred sweetness level. Overall, food was excellent but the drinks were innovative yet a bit too sour. Service is fantastic and in line with Michelin guide rated restaurants, and the overall experience is fairly memorable.

The food is excellent. Enjoyed everything I had. Service was friendly, helpful and always available. Nice lighting with cool light fixtures. Chief/Owner is extremely friendly and welcoming. Will definitely go again and try more of their offerings

It's been a while since I've been back to Vij's, and honestly, not much has changed--except maybe my ability to handle spice! The place still gets packed faster than a Canucks playoff bar (on a good year), so showing up early is still the secret move. The food? Still top-notch. Every bite reminds me why this spot remains a Vancouver legend. The vibe is just as fun and lively as ever warm lighting, chatter all around, and that irresistible aroma that makes you instantly forget you even ate Dinner. I have to admit, the service feels a bit different since my last visit. Not bad just a new rhythm, kind of like when your favourite band swaps drummers. But the whole experience was still great. Vij's hasn't lost its magic still a fun, flavour-packed night out that leaves you full, happy, and plotting your next visit before you've even left the table.

Once upon a time, Vikram Vij had a restaurant called My Shanti, and then it closed. The end. No, not "the end," but when it closed we knew we had to try the flagship, because the "side project" was so phenomenal. I wasn't blown away because I knew what to expect - excellent food, good service, and a nice atmosphere with a creative cocktail menu. Had this been my first time at a Vikram Vij place I would have been on the floor, but the standard is so high here. The place is a little on the dark side, but your eyes eventually adjust to the ambiance. They bring our a complimentary puffed rice that looks like wagon wheel pasta, but is positively delightful. I would order more and snack on it at home if I could. We went big, so got the garam masala chicken (5/5), garlic ginger naan (4/5 - it's very puffy and not as easily folded), alpaca biriyani (5/5 - alpaca is delicious), lamb rogan josh (3.5/5 - really light on the meat and some pieces were a little gristly), and sashi paneer (5/5 - would eat the broth with a spoon). While the food is spectacular, the cocktails are a true standout and I'd be remiss if I did not mention them. They are creative, tasty, and worth having an uber or DD. We had the Lantern Martini, Vieux Delhi, Presidenté for Life. Presentation is A+, and the Lantern Martini comes with its own bitters for personalization and customization. Make reservations, get there early. There was a line for the place to open at 5:30. It's not a terrible drive from south of the border, but allow yourself ample time. It's definitely worth the trip

What a great experience we had here. We had reservations and got seated right away. The interior was nice and smelled really good. We tried a bunch of appetizers lots of their main dishes. The quality of the food was fantastic. The service was excellent. The chef came around multiple times making suggestions. I will be back.!

First time trying Vij's! Have heard good things about this spot for ages and finally tried it for dinner. Easily made a reservation online. Service was prompt and courteous. I liked the crunchy snacks to start. I got the mango lassi and it was really good. I also got the chai, and thought it was a little watered down and not spiced enough. As for the food, we got the butter chicken with rice and naan, as well as the pakora. The pakora was crunchy and I liked the sauce. The butter chicken was nice and rich but a little salty for my liking. Overall the food was just okay for the price point.

Having moved to Vancouver for 3 years now, for some reason I hesitated going to Vij's because I always had this perception of "how good can Indian food actually be"? TLDR: don't make the same mistake as I did and come check out this spot. The hype is real. Apart from having the man himself float around and checking in on your meal. The food is tantalizing as it is simple - good ingredients executed to perfection. Cocktails are adventurous and had a nice spin to the classics. Service was impeccable and made you feel at home. We were offered seating at the rooftop for our meal and despite the rain, we were covered and heated to fully enjoy this experience. 10/10 recommend. Only downside to this whole ordeal was I never got my welcome chips and dip. Probably because we ordered too much and didn't have a lot of real estate on our table for 2!

Overall a solid Indian restaurant in Vancouver - but I felt that it didn't live up to the good reviews and hype. Service was great and they provided a welcome snack and chai at the end as well. We tried a bunch of Indian classics, from the pakoras to chicken curry and naan. The lamb popsicle was done well but I felt the curries were lacking and nothing amazing. The price point was relatively steep for Vancouver but overall a nice experience if you're looking for decent Indian food. Ambiance was pretty dim and tables were pretty near each other too.

FOOD: **Lamb popsicles: Must order this dish! The lamb was tender and fatty. The curry sauce was bright and decadent. We ordered extra naan just to soak up the sauce because we didn't think it would be socially acceptable to just lick the place. **Naan: The naan is fluffy and nicely charred. Pork belly spoon: Small bite of spiced pork. It wasn't particularly fatty the way I expected pork belly to be; it tasted like pork shoulder. It was good but nothing particularly special. I think ordering one spoon to share between two people was the right decision. Portobello mushroom curry: Pass. Watery curry, probably due to liquids released by the mushrooms. The dish could of benefitted from the mushrooms being charred/roasted prior, or use of more flavorful mushrooms like shitake. Overall a unique dish (I have never heard of mushroon curry), but with all the other amazing snacks on the menu, in hindsight I would skip this one. Braised beef: The beef was tender but somewhat dry so really relied on the sauce for flavor. Ambiance was cozy yet elegant. The restaurant is appropriate for a casual dinner, date night or a family outing. Service was very attentive.

My last visit to Vij's was over 20 years ago, before my food critic phase. I remember it being delicious yet expensive. Today, we celebrated dual birthdays--mine and my friend's. Vij's is housed in a plain industrial building. Inside, there are three levels: the bustling ground floor with the kitchen, a quiet mezzanine for introverts, and a semi-open rooftop patio, which we chose. The sunset light filtering through greenery created a lovely atmosphere. We ordered three appetizers: eggplant, prawns, and samosas. While not the best I've had, the prawns were overly salty, and the samosas were dry. For mains, we had curry lingcod, rogan josh lamb, and lamb popsicles. The lamb popsicles were the highlight, perfectly grilled but too small. The rogan josh was dry, and the lingcod lacked flavor. Overall, the ambiance was pleasant, and service was excellent, especially with Vij himself greeting guests. However, the bill didn't match the quality of the food. Thankfully, it wasn't my treat.

Vij is a well celebrated michelin guide Indian restaurant on Cambie St. The ambiance and service truly made it a memorable visit. However, I do feel like the dishes were made for people who can't handle spice or have been adjusted to the local palate. Pork Belly Spoonful ($6.5) 6.5/10 Very tender and flavourful, not sure if I tasted any apple or mint tbh. Thali ($34) 7/10 The roasted eggplant and chickpea kofta were my favourites, with the rest of the dishes being alright. My friend claimed that traditionally we would have gotten rice or naan but apparently not in here. Lamb Popsicle ($33) 7/10 The reason why we came to this place. Our friends raved about this place so we had to try it. The fenugreek cream curry was delightful, however I do have to say that the lamb was actually super tough to eat and somewhat small. Whole Wheat Chapati ($3.75) 5/10 A thinner flatbread made from whole wheat. This was supposed to be healthier but honestly I prefer naan. Rose Syrup Ice Cream ($14) 7.5/10 Served with gulab jamun. A sweet bomb for sure, even coming from sweet tooth like myself. Personally eating the ice cream with gulab jamun was a bit too much sugar for me, with that said the ice cream itself was lovely.

Don't know how I've somehow missed this place after living here 5 years, but am really glad I did! Super delicious and slightly upscale Indian food. Lots of veggie & meat options, which makes it dietary restriction friendly. My friend and I only had veggie dishes, as she's vegetarian and I was very impressed. The shahi paneer was sooo delicious, definitely my favorite dish. Would love to come back and try some of the meat options.

The location is central and it was easy to find street parking on Main Street. Even though it was a Saturday, we were the only table for most of the evening. We were a bit anxious because of the lack of customers; however, there were delivery drivers picking up orders regularly, so it looks like most people did not dine in. The place is clean and seating was comfortable. There is a bell on the table for us to call the server when we were ready to order. We ordered the Lamb Shan-e-Babur that serves 2, the Prawn Coconut, and the Chicken Karahi. The dishes do not come with any rice or naan, so we had 2 orders of rice and 2 orders of naan. Even though the rice portion was generous, we still found it quite pricy. Each of us was given a bottle of water (Pure Life), unnecessary use of plastic is not something that I like to see. And even worse was the surprise when we got the bill that there was a charge for it! The food was delivered by a robot. The portion was reasonable and the taste was good. The lamb was well cooked and tender, the prawns tasted very fresh, and the chicken had the perfect taste, the spice level was just right for all of us. The only thing that was a problem was there were some small sharp broken pieces of bone in the Chicken Karahi, my friend had a painful bite when she thought she was only having the sauce on rice. I would come back for the taste of the food, but I will definitely turn down the bottled water.

If you didn't know, they provide 3 sizes for their biryani and appetizers - normal size, family size, and party tray. The party tray can easily feed 12-15 people while the family tray can fit 7-8 people. Here is what I ordered - :: Crispy corn family tray - this was a big fit! You didn't even need to warm it up, it tasted good as it was :: chicken majestic family tray - such unique flavours and the chicken was cooked to perfection :: vijaywada chicken biryani party tray - our all time favourite :: paneer 65 biryani party tray - another favourite :: double ka meetha - first time trying it and definitely won't be last. It was a bread budding with alot of ghee and tasted delicious!! They provided a lot of raita and salan with the biryani. All of this was just enough for 30 people! I had many people messaging me the next day asking where i did the catering from. Would highly recommend and it's definitely bank for your buck!
