"She came in through the bathroom window" (Lennon and…read moreMcCartney) Our house renovations continue and a small upstairs bathroom is our newest target. After we interviewed a few contractors, we decided to switch to Action Carpet and Floor Covering. Now I know what you're thinking because there's nothing in their name to suggest they do full bathroom make-overs, but they sure do. Their Chief Estimator Kevin came to the house, asked us what we had in mind, took a bunch or measurements and in a few days e-mailed us with two options. We had a few back and forth e-mails, made some adjustments, went into the store to select subway tile for the shower walls and a mosaic tile for the shower floor, and in a few days we were all set with an agreed price and scope. On Day One the old vanity, sink, and medicine cabinet were demolished, the toilet was detached to be reset after the floor was replaced, the old shower door, shower ceramic tiles and drywall were removed, the new shower pan and base were replaced, and replacement of the new water resistant sheetrock on the shower walls began. We had three workers here most of the day and they were an all business, no-nonsense group, arriving promptly as promised. They removed all of the debris and left the workspace pretty clean. On Day Two the ceramic subway tile was installed on the shower walls and the ceramic mosaic tile was installed on the shower floor. Grouting for both should be tomorrow. On Day three, the tile was grouted, the shower ceiling light was installed, and installation of the bead board paneling on the walls began. Day Four was a big day!! The showerhead and water valve control were installed, new light bar, vanity and countertop were installed, the new vinyl plank flooring was installed, as were new window casings and floor heat vent. Day Five saw the new medicine cabinet and faucet installed, towel bar, and water lines connected. The existing toilet and TP holder were reinstalled. This pretty much finished the job, but there were some minor unresolved delays with the shower door and shower soap tray. It took a while to iron out those things and we did have some sales tax adjustments on things that were ordered but not included in the final job. We want to give a special shout out to Todd (the primary rebuilding contractor) and his assistant Tim. They were fantastic, meticulous in their craft, and a real pleasure to work with.

The carpet was installed very well, as expected. For me, this was a "test run" for a couple of larger carpet or flooring projects, yet to come in the next year or two. Action Carpet will certainly have the inside track for my upcoming floor projects.

"It's just apartment house sense It's like apartment house…read morerents Remember: one man's ceiling Is another man's floor" (Paul Simon) Things started off so well With Cook & Kozlak. We wanted to replace the bedroom carpet and thought we'd deal with a local company instead of a big box store. The showroom at Cook & Kozlak had a big selection of carpet styles and quality. Christine walked us through some selections in the color family we liked, and gave is a few sample boards to take home and ponder on. After we selected the carpet, Sam came out to measure up the room and prepare the final estimate. He was very personable and professional. A few days later we received a phone call to schedule the installation and we agreed to Monday at 9:00. That never happened. I called at 9:30, and was told the crew was running late and they would be here between 10:00 and 10:30. When the crew did arrive, there was no explanatiion and no apology - so I'm not sure they knew we were promised 9:00? Had I not called at 9:30, I doubt we would have learned of the new time until they rang the door bell. The install went fairly smooth, but there were a few minor issues. The most serious was that I didn't like the way the carpet rubbed against the closet bypass doors. That wasn't met with much of a response except for "you may have to shave down the door".

"Gimme three steps, gimme three steps, mister Gimme three…read moresteps towards the door?" (Lynyrd Skynyrd) After we had our hardwood floors and steps sanded and refinished, we decided to pretty up those steps with a carpet runner, which explains why we visited Galaxy Discount Carpet Store today. That decision ended up being a FIVE STAR experience. Their two floor showroom is just incredible! Sample boards, rolls stacked on the floor in rows, area rugs hanging from the ceiling, gorgeous stuff everywhere. We met with Charlie and explained to him what we were looking for. He said that staircase runners can either be pre-manufactured in big rolls, or custom cut from carpeting meant for rooms. We knew we wanted a runner in some shade of gray to complement our wall color, and decided on a carpet runner to be cut from a big grayish roll and then finished with black binding along the edges, to complement the black stair rail and contrast with the white stair risers. It was installed 72 hours later, and that was pretty amazing in it's own right. Communication with Galaxy was great. Charlie was a dream to work with, the installers called us the day before install to confirm the date and time window, and the van with two workers arrived as scheduled mid-afternoon and did a neat professional job on the install. Charlie's price was $140 less than one we had from a flooring company out in our neck of the woods, and the carpet quality was better at Galaxy. Everything went well, and the stairs look great!

I scheduled a cleaning with "West Hartford Cleaners" based on their five star glowing reviews. But…read morebeware: these reviews date back some time; West Hartford Cleaners is now "Ameri-Best" and maybe is not the same company. My childhood home in Canton had been immaculately kept up (yes, white carpets) until the death of my mother several years ago. In the meantime, my stepfather, 80 years of age, continues to live in the house. He has a cat and very little motivation to upkeep the house, and so the issue was old cat vomit stains on the white rug. No problem, they assured me, but also mentioned several times that stains tend to reappear after a cleaning, and that they would come back and retreat if necessary. I live out of state and came to see the job a week after they did it. It looked barely different from before the cleaning, and they had not moved or cleaned under any furniture. I called the main office, spoke to Pam, who said a she would send someone out immediately to retreat. Someone came out within two hours, and he identified himself as the same one who had done the carpets a week before. There had been no problems, he said, and all the stains had come clean the first time. Before he began, he emphasized the importance of drying the carpets quickly in order to prevent the stains from appearing again. Normally, he explained, in basements and poorly ventilated homes (like this one), they used floor fans to aid in drying. But he also said he had none available that day. He referred me to Joe, the owner of the company, who agreed that stains will relift if the carpets aren't immediately dried. I had to use considerable restraint to not ask the obvious: If you know that these stains will resurface because this house has no ventilation and you have no fans today, why are we even doing this? Instead, I concentrated on being positive and asked if we could procure fans the following morning. He readily agreed, and I called Joe first thing the following morning and left a message. When I heard nothing back I called again at 11:30. In the meantime I had been watching, to my dismay, all the stains reappearing over the course of the day and the previous night. The house was beginning to smell dank and feel very damp, the rugs still wet to the touch. Also, a new problem: yellow pattern streaking over one patch that had not been there before. It looked consistent with a chemical burn, because I have seen them before when white turns to yellow. I finally got Joe on the phone close to noon that day and he sounded cross and told me he had no fans for us to use that day either. Frustrated, I asked him the obvious: why did we even go through this pointless exercise of retreating? At that point, he lost his temper, started yelling at me that he had done the best he could, and hung up the phone. I hadn't even gotten a chance to bring up the chemical burns; I'm sure he would've handled that topic gracefully as well. Sorry--to tell a long story takes time, but please beware of this company. I am still deciding whether I will pursue this issue in small claims, but I would spare anyone this hassle and aggravation.
