Came here on their second day of opening and overall had a really good experience! Everything we ordered tasted really good and I'm excited to come back and try more of the menu. Service was a little slower, but completely understandable considering they had literally just opened. Everyone was really nice and welcoming. It is definitely on the pricier side for smaller portions, but that's becoming pretty standard for sushi in LA. Also something to keep in mind, there is only street parking available and it's a very congested area, so finding a spot can be extremely difficult on weekends. Overall, really good food and definitely a place I'd come back to, especially once they've had some time to get into their rhythm!

Went today would go back again. It reminds me of an upscale Katsuya. Spicy tuna was good, they add in toro to the spicy tuna mixture so it's done well. Love the spicy edamame, would order multiple of that. The yellowtail was the softest yellowtail I've had even compared to Yume sushi.

Amazing! All fish super fresh, quality phenomenal. Ordered honestly a little bit of everything and we were over the moon. Will definitely be one of the sushi spots we are coming back to more often. For sure top 5 on my list.

Solid 3.5 star experience! Food and flavors were above average for a higher end sushi spot, and the menu is versatile. The space is absolutely beautiful with modern wood tones and mid century chair design. The cons: the service and speed of the food coming out was very slow for a sushi restaurant. I'm sure this is a first week opening tweak that needs to be figured out, but waiting over an hour for a hand roll is unacceptable. Additionally, the prices are very high comparable to the amount of food you receive. Compared to counterparts like Taisho down the street, the portion sizes felt much smaller for similar pricing. For example, at Taisho, the baked crab hand rolls are massive and here, very thin and small. Finally, I didn't appreciate the nickel and diming. Charging a $1 per extra sauce that was no more than a tablespoon in the bowl is crazy. I dine at many high end sushi restaurants including Nobu and do not get charged for extra sauces. When I asked for it to be removed from the bill, I was met with a little attitude from the waitress. Food for thought, considering you're so brand new, maybe lay off on the additional's and considering upping your portion size just a tad to compare to other higher end establishments in the area? It's easy to add a bit more crab in your hand roll or a tad more filling in your cut roll. We will come back and try again in a few months and see how it is then and provide an updated review.

Went to Sumi Sushi in Sherman Oaks last night and honestly can't stop thinking about the food. We started with the yellowtail sashimi and it was some of the freshest I've had. It was clean, buttery, no fishy taste at all. Right after that we tried the king salmon sashimi and it might have actually stolen the show. Perfect marbling, melts in your mouth. The Japanese sandos are no joke. I wasn't expecting much going in but they blew me away!! Its crispy, savory, perfectly balanced. If you haven't had one, get one. That's a limited item and apparently we got the last one, so you have to ask ahead of time. Jumbo scallops were incredible too. You could tell they were fresh, not the rubbery kind you get most places. Perfectly seared with just the right char. We also got the New York strip cooked medium and it was one of the better steaks I've had at a sushi spot, which isn't usually where you go for steak. My one-year-old daughter, who comes to restaurants with us all the time, ate an ENTIRE plate of their baked salmon, two avocados, and then somehow still had room to have 4 pieces of the New York strip. That basically never happens. My wife and I had such a great time. Food was outstanding across the board, service was warm, and it just felt like a place that actually cares about what they're putting out. The ambience was great. Already thinking about when we can go back. Highly recommend if you're in the Sherman Oaks area.

Edamame was good too, and overall, we had a good experience and are interested in trying more items!

Long story short, my wife was starting to sweat so she wanted to be inside with some A/C. So far, so good. Our waiter was so awesome, but it was his first day, so understandably, he made a couple of very minor mistakes that were easily fixed. He brought out a dish we did not order (which he swapped for the correct one) and he forgot to bring the cocktail that my wife ordered. Again, no big deal. Now... the food. If you are looking for a sushi restaurant, this is not for you. They do have some sushi, but it is very limited, and frankly the options they did have were wildly overpriced. Selling salmon sashimi for $40 is a huge ask. As for the atmosphere, it's a pretty sharp looking space, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, but they leave all the windows and doors open at all times, so if it's a warm evening, you're going to be hot even if you sit outside. Also, the music gets progressively louder as nightfall progresses, so it can be tough to have a conversation without shouting. Bottom line, if you're looking for a good sushi spot, there are half a dozen other places within walking distance that are, in my opinion, much better. If you're looking for a wider variety of Japanese cuisine, and have a few hundred extra dollars lying around, then go ahead and give Taisho a try.

The dry aged fish was super tender and creamy and had no fishy taste at all. Our most favorite out of the 5 was the lean tuna, steelhead salmon, and whitefish. I visit this little Valley gem (near the 405 Fwy and Sepulveda Blvd just south of Ventura Blvd.) about one to two times a month. I went more often when I lived in Sherman Oaks. First, it's always busy at dinner, so you know the word is out that it is good. Second, the food is consistantly very good. Third (and can be First), the staff is great. They work well together and quietly and always make sure you are taken care of and they are also friendly, which is great when you are a regular. So, Katsu-ya is a chain. Little Izaka-ya by Katsu-ya serves the same great taste and standard of any of the Katsu-ya restaurants, only this one will serve smaller dishes. So, I mostly go solo and I can order a variety and get 1 piece of sushi or a mini-order of the sashimi specials. I think this is a big factor in why I started going to begin with. The managers are always so welcoming (Joe (no longer there. Boo.), Koh and the newest sweet manager (I didn't get his name, but will when I go again). The parking is the only downside. The City of Los Angeles owns the war-torn disaster of a "parking lot" in the rear of the row of restaurants. You have to pay at a kiosk (about $2.50). BUT I suggest you call the city and report the pitted asphalt and GO TO LITTLE IZAKA-YA. Some of my favorite dishes -- all gluten-free -- are the Crispy Rice/Spicy Tuna, jumbo scallop sushi with yuzu and sea salt, salmon skin hand roll (no gobo), albacore sushi with gf ponzu sauce, and the salad with blanched broccoli, asparagus, cucumber, avocado, tomato and lettuce... and a cold house sake.
