Delicious and fun! Visited LA and stopped in for supper. Sat at the sushi bar. Great ambiance, fast service. Fresh fish. Big fan of spicy tuna, salmon and shrimp tempura. They also accommodated my dietary requests (light rice). Wonderful!!

Holy moly what a great spot that I'm mad I didn't discover earlier. Excellent food, incredibly light and happy atmosphere, and the service was spectacular. Holy cow so yummy! Thank you!

O Sumo, I never knew! Well not since well before 2022. I haven't set foot in my (more recent years) very own neighborhood Sushi Bar in over 5 maybe even 6 years O.O... But finally did this week of this year and was I ever happy to enjoy a lavish lunch here. I'm talking HUGE!! My friend Steven was visiting his family for the weekend, a former SFV local and always sushi bar enthusiast. We decided on the O-mazing O in the Oaks, a great place to go. Open daily for lunch, happy hour (5PM - 7PM) and dinner (until 9PM/930PM most nights). They do close for change over between 330PM and 430PM, but open as early as 1130 during the week (much later on weekends). You can find street parking as well as limited parking in their back lot where you can also partake in patio seating. The street (Van Nuys Blvd) curves slightly here, just up from Van Nuys Blvd/Magnolia Blvd (above the Acura dealership and nextdoor to Off The Charts + Elevation Bar & Lounge). Sumo inside has so many places to sit (many tables w/ chairs of course), including at the bar seats and all it's first come first serve (you choose your own adventure aka seating). The menu is massive and it's hard not to eat with your eye as they have pictures of most items, especially if popular. I knew what I could get here (lots of plant-based, vegetarian and vegan friendly eats), but it seems they've added a bit more in the last few seasons and cycles since their very first review back in 2005... Though I believe a change majorly occurred 2019 (new management/revamp/social media - Instagram & more). We receive complimentary miso soups + cucumber salads + shishito peppers in addition to our orders... The table was FULL of food (for just us two lol)! Steven's Lunch Special Combo (Chef's choice sashimi + 10 piece + salad) and my Japanese Veg Mapa/Mapo Tofu (the best I've ever had) + avocado roll + rice for two. Needless to say this vegan and his non-vegan friend scored a win! We took our time, enjoyed the decor, each others company and ambiance. Splitting the bill for our birthdays (Steve's the day after and mine a few days ago) and toasting to the holidays, not to mention our amazing server who packed up our many leftovers was the perfect return trip, more than worthy of a great tip! Would consider doing a pick up order - living less than half a mile away and enjoying again with friends as well as family. Huge portions, huge quality and huge customer service!!

Wow, what a gem! Absolutely, such a well kept secret. I drove by knowing i wanted sushi, never did I expect both food and service to be genuinely amazing. Small quaint place. I placed my order and immediately felt like it was my little confidential spot. I placed my order and everything was just such a pleasant surprise. Very high quality food. Took the leftovers to my co-workers who all agreed that his was amazing food. The ambience was relaxing and suggested I come back and bring my date for Valentines.

What a gem of a Japanese spot tucked away in Sherman oaks. The menu features an eclectic mix of Japanese, chinese, and Korean items. I think of it as a Japanese restaurant that also has the best Korean and Chinese dishes on the menu so you can have it all! Never have to debate where to go for dinner again! We tried the chirashi bowl, sushi set, and Korean mixed rice. Everything was absolutely delicious and the portion sizes are very generous. Service was quick and courteous. Interior is low key but modern and clean. Parking in the back or in the neighborhood. We had a great dining experience here!

I had such an amazing experience! The sushi was absolutely delicious -- fresh, perfectly made, and full of flavor. I'm currently pregnant, and I gave them specific instructions to make everything pregnancy-safe, and they followed them exactly! I really appreciate how careful and attentive they were. It's so rare to find a sushi place that's both this tasty and accommodating. Definitely my new go-to spot! pregnancy approved !

Amazing pieces of fish and an incredibly sweet staff! The owner is always interacting w his customers to give them the best experience possible! The rolls are cut nicely and filled with a generous amount of fish every time; they even dress them w caviar and gold leaves. They offer free miso soup as a starter and ice cream for dessert. There is free parking in the next door body shop too if you can't find street parking. Great neighborhood spot!

Ask the Community - O Sumo Sushi

    Are the udon noodles vegan?

    Yes

I'm crashed!! I stopped by this afternoon and the restaurant was closed down with a big chain around the front doo. The place looked abandoned. Anyone knows what happened to this amazing Sushi place and all the amazing ppl who run it?😞 I'll miss I?

There are new owners now... to our favor, they're much better!!!

What happened to Sumo? Did they move or just close? I've been going there for 20 years!!

They closed and the new owners have that place clean and the food is amazing!!!! Better than the old owners

Long story short, my wife was starting to sweat so she wanted to be inside with some A/C. So far, so good. Our waiter was so awesome, but it was his first day, so understandably, he made a couple of very minor mistakes that were easily fixed. He brought out a dish we did not order (which he swapped for the correct one) and he forgot to bring the cocktail that my wife ordered. Again, no big deal. Now... the food. If you are looking for a sushi restaurant, this is not for you. They do have some sushi, but it is very limited, and frankly the options they did have were wildly overpriced. Selling salmon sashimi for $40 is a huge ask. As for the atmosphere, it's a pretty sharp looking space, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, but they leave all the windows and doors open at all times, so if it's a warm evening, you're going to be hot even if you sit outside. Also, the music gets progressively louder as nightfall progresses, so it can be tough to have a conversation without shouting. Bottom line, if you're looking for a good sushi spot, there are half a dozen other places within walking distance that are, in my opinion, much better. If you're looking for a wider variety of Japanese cuisine, and have a few hundred extra dollars lying around, then go ahead and give Taisho a try.

I visit this little Valley gem (near the 405 Fwy and Sepulveda Blvd just south of Ventura Blvd.) about one to two times a month. I went more often when I lived in Sherman Oaks. First, it's always busy at dinner, so you know the word is out that it is good. Second, the food is consistantly very good. Third (and can be First), the staff is great. They work well together and quietly and always make sure you are taken care of and they are also friendly, which is great when you are a regular. So, Katsu-ya is a chain. Little Izaka-ya by Katsu-ya serves the same great taste and standard of any of the Katsu-ya restaurants, only this one will serve smaller dishes. So, I mostly go solo and I can order a variety and get 1 piece of sushi or a mini-order of the sashimi specials. I think this is a big factor in why I started going to begin with. The managers are always so welcoming (Joe (no longer there. Boo.), Koh and the newest sweet manager (I didn't get his name, but will when I go again). The parking is the only downside. The City of Los Angeles owns the war-torn disaster of a "parking lot" in the rear of the row of restaurants. You have to pay at a kiosk (about $2.50). BUT I suggest you call the city and report the pitted asphalt and GO TO LITTLE IZAKA-YA. Some of my favorite dishes -- all gluten-free -- are the Crispy Rice/Spicy Tuna, jumbo scallop sushi with yuzu and sea salt, salmon skin hand roll (no gobo), albacore sushi with gf ponzu sauce, and the salad with blanched broccoli, asparagus, cucumber, avocado, tomato and lettuce... and a cold house sake.
