Holy moly what a great spot that I'm mad I didn't discover earlier. Excellent food, incredibly light and happy atmosphere, and the service was spectacular. Holy cow so yummy! Thank you!

Delicious and fun! Visited LA and stopped in for supper. Sat at the sushi bar. Great ambiance, fast service. Fresh fish. Big fan of spicy tuna, salmon and shrimp tempura. They also accommodated my dietary requests (light rice). Wonderful!!

Wow, what a gem! Absolutely, such a well kept secret. I drove by knowing i wanted sushi, never did I expect both food and service to be genuinely amazing. Small quaint place. I placed my order and immediately felt like it was my little confidential spot. I placed my order and everything was just such a pleasant surprise. Very high quality food. Took the leftovers to my co-workers who all agreed that his was amazing food. The ambience was relaxing and suggested I come back and bring my date for Valentines.

O Sumo, I never knew! Well not since well before 2022. I haven't set foot in my (more recent years) very own neighborhood Sushi Bar in over 5 maybe even 6 years O.O... But finally did this week of this year and was I ever happy to enjoy a lavish lunch here. I'm talking HUGE!! My friend Steven was visiting his family for the weekend, a former SFV local and always sushi bar enthusiast. We decided on the O-mazing O in the Oaks, a great place to go. Open daily for lunch, happy hour (5PM - 7PM) and dinner (until 9PM/930PM most nights). They do close for change over between 330PM and 430PM, but open as early as 1130 during the week (much later on weekends). You can find street parking as well as limited parking in their back lot where you can also partake in patio seating. The street (Van Nuys Blvd) curves slightly here, just up from Van Nuys Blvd/Magnolia Blvd (above the Acura dealership and nextdoor to Off The Charts + Elevation Bar & Lounge). Sumo inside has so many places to sit (many tables w/ chairs of course), including at the bar seats and all it's first come first serve (you choose your own adventure aka seating). The menu is massive and it's hard not to eat with your eye as they have pictures of most items, especially if popular. I knew what I could get here (lots of plant-based, vegetarian and vegan friendly eats), but it seems they've added a bit more in the last few seasons and cycles since their very first review back in 2005... Though I believe a change majorly occurred 2019 (new management/revamp/social media - Instagram & more). We receive complimentary miso soups + cucumber salads + shishito peppers in addition to our orders... The table was FULL of food (for just us two lol)! Steven's Lunch Special Combo (Chef's choice sashimi + 10 piece + salad) and my Japanese Veg Mapa/Mapo Tofu (the best I've ever had) + avocado roll + rice for two. Needless to say this vegan and his non-vegan friend scored a win! We took our time, enjoyed the decor, each others company and ambiance. Splitting the bill for our birthdays (Steve's the day after and mine a few days ago) and toasting to the holidays, not to mention our amazing server who packed up our many leftovers was the perfect return trip, more than worthy of a great tip! Would consider doing a pick up order - living less than half a mile away and enjoying again with friends as well as family. Huge portions, huge quality and huge customer service!!

What a gem of a Japanese spot tucked away in Sherman oaks. The menu features an eclectic mix of Japanese, chinese, and Korean items. I think of it as a Japanese restaurant that also has the best Korean and Chinese dishes on the menu so you can have it all! Never have to debate where to go for dinner again! We tried the chirashi bowl, sushi set, and Korean mixed rice. Everything was absolutely delicious and the portion sizes are very generous. Service was quick and courteous. Interior is low key but modern and clean. Parking in the back or in the neighborhood. We had a great dining experience here!

I had such an amazing experience! The sushi was absolutely delicious -- fresh, perfectly made, and full of flavor. I'm currently pregnant, and I gave them specific instructions to make everything pregnancy-safe, and they followed them exactly! I really appreciate how careful and attentive they were. It's so rare to find a sushi place that's both this tasty and accommodating. Definitely my new go-to spot! pregnancy approved !

Amazing pieces of fish and an incredibly sweet staff! The owner is always interacting w his customers to give them the best experience possible! The rolls are cut nicely and filled with a generous amount of fish every time; they even dress them w caviar and gold leaves. They offer free miso soup as a starter and ice cream for dessert. There is free parking in the next door body shop too if you can't find street parking. Great neighborhood spot!

    Are the udon noodles vegan?

    Yes

I'm crashed!! I stopped by this afternoon and the restaurant was closed down with a big chain around the front doo. The place looked abandoned. Anyone knows what happened to this amazing Sushi place and all the amazing ppl who run it?😞 I'll miss I?

There are new owners now... to our favor, they're much better!!!

What happened to Sumo? Did they move or just close? I've been going there for 20 years!!

They closed and the new owners have that place clean and the food is amazing!!!! Better than the old owners

We were warmly greeted, quickly seated at a booth and the interior was cozy with wonderful lights everywhere, and packed to the gills with folks. I asked for spicy and they added a yummy chilli oil. My husbands was seafood ramen, but somehow the noodles were missing. He later found out our waitress mistakenly gave him the miso, seafood soup bowl. Later we were some of the last folks to depart closing out @10pm. Yes, we loved the hand rolls but I HAVE to shout out the fish bone broth miso soup. Wow. I loved it SO much I would come back and just get a bunch of it to-go on a cold day or when I'm feeling under the weather. The broth was SO flavorful it blew my mind. I definitely recommend you try it! My husband and I both got the Xtra Medium and it was a lot of food! At first I thought it was funny that there are no plates, but it kind of works here. The chef makes your hand rolls at the bar and just walks over and hands them to you. No frills, just great fish. The Xtra Medium came with lean tuna, fatty tuna, steelhead salmon, whitefish, prawn and a special. The salmon was incredible. The whitefish was snapper and it was incredible. It might have been my favorite! The prawn handroll had a really neat sweet flavor and the special was a crunchy crab with shiso leaf. I loved how the progression of the rolls seemed so well thought out, it was like a full flavor journey. They have some alcoholic bevvys too! I was always hesitant to check this handroll bar out because it didn't seem like an actual restaurant, but it's a true hidden gem! Definitely a place to take someone you are looking to impress!

This review pains me to write, since i want to like this place, but I think it's suffering from a…read morebit of an identity crisis at the moment. The food that we had was fine. We were a party of 4 and we all ended up ordering either the medium or extra medium hand roll sets. The fish was good, though I felt like some of the toppings overwhelmed the flavors a bit. In the whitefish handroll, for example, the yuzu or citrus salt that they used was all I could taste until I had some ginger later. What unfortunately is dragging this palce down in my eyes is how long it took to receive our orders. We got there around 2pm, which should have been well after the lunch rush. We weren't done being served until around 3:30. One handroll only takes a minute or two to eat, and so we spent the vast majority of the time just waiting around for our food. I don't mind waiting a bit for food made to order, but this felt a excessive. I think the underlying issue here is that there only seems to be one station/person making handrolls for the entire restaurant. If they had other items on the menu that could be prepared in a kitchen, that might be OK, but the one station is a painfully slow bottleneck for a place that only has handrolls on the menu. I mentioned before that I think this place is suffering from a bit of an identity crisis. I understand that the owner might have multiple passions, whether that's in aging fish, coffee, baking, or making hand rolls. Maybe these areas fill different niches at different times of the day, but I think there needs to be some sort of optimization done to help make things run faster. Maybe that means opening a second station, or limiting the number of tables people can order rolls from.

When it comes to date night, Aria has proven itself time and time again as our top sushi destination. The atmosphere is modern and clean, yet warm and inviting. The staff is INCREDIBLE! James the owner couldn't be a sweeter guy and if you get the privilege to interface with him, I PROMISE he will leave you smiling as you exit the premises. There is always ample parking in front or across the street, but we now know that they also have designated parking spots behind the restaurant as well. As far as food quality goes, we have sampled everything from nobu to all of the local options that will remain nameless due to their inconsistent taste as well as sub par service. This place takes the top spot when it comes to freshness. We have all been to sushi restaurants that have items that taste a little "fishy" (pardon the pun). I can't for the life of me figure out how these guys NAIL IT every single time in providing us with quality fish and other food that is so fresh, you'll swear you're on a boat on the shores of Japan. I haven't had a single piece of fish from here that I didn't think was absolutely perfect in terms of flavor and freshness. The other wild card that I will mention food wise is the RAMEN! Their Chashu Men is absolutely to die for. Pork cooked to perfection, broth as flavorful as one palate can stand, and noodles a gorgeous texture and white in color with a unique flavor I had yet to taste in the ramen world. NOTE: I order mine with no seaweed or seaweed on the side because I'm not a huge fan of that in my ramen. 2nd NOTE: I love spicy food, but I order "Spicy" and not "Very Spicy". They have a spicy concoction that is Korean made that is pure capsaicin. If you're into that, get it on the side, but be ready to sweat and to leave your body for about 10 minutes or so. All in all, the service staff, the management and the owners all care so much about your dining experience and are so friendly that I'd say it's about as close to perfection at a local haunt as I could recommend. To top it all off, the prices are extremely affordable and when you get your bill, chances are, you'll be left wondering if maybe they took an item or two off, and on occasion, you'd be right! That's just the type of place this is. They love their customers and in turn, I'm sure you'll LOVE eating here.
