Delicious and fun! Visited LA and stopped in for supper. Sat at the sushi bar. Great ambiance, fast service. Fresh fish. Big fan of spicy tuna, salmon and shrimp tempura. They also accommodated my dietary requests (light rice). Wonderful!!

Wow, what a gem! Absolutely, such a well kept secret. I drove by knowing i wanted sushi, never did I expect both food and service to be genuinely amazing. Small quaint place. I placed my order and immediately felt like it was my little confidential spot. I placed my order and everything was just such a pleasant surprise. Very high quality food. Took the leftovers to my co-workers who all agreed that his was amazing food. The ambience was relaxing and suggested I come back and bring my date for Valentines.

O Sumo, I never knew! Well not since well before 2022. I haven't set foot in my (more recent years) very own neighborhood Sushi Bar in over 5 maybe even 6 years O.O... But finally did this week of this year and was I ever happy to enjoy a lavish lunch here. I'm talking HUGE!! My friend Steven was visiting his family for the weekend, a former SFV local and always sushi bar enthusiast. We decided on the O-mazing O in the Oaks, a great place to go. Open daily for lunch, happy hour (5PM - 7PM) and dinner (until 9PM/930PM most nights). They do close for change over between 330PM and 430PM, but open as early as 1130 during the week (much later on weekends). You can find street parking as well as limited parking in their back lot where you can also partake in patio seating. The street (Van Nuys Blvd) curves slightly here, just up from Van Nuys Blvd/Magnolia Blvd (above the Acura dealership and nextdoor to Off The Charts + Elevation Bar & Lounge). Sumo inside has so many places to sit (many tables w/ chairs of course), including at the bar seats and all it's first come first serve (you choose your own adventure aka seating). The menu is massive and it's hard not to eat with your eye as they have pictures of most items, especially if popular. I knew what I could get here (lots of plant-based, vegetarian and vegan friendly eats), but it seems they've added a bit more in the last few seasons and cycles since their very first review back in 2005... Though I believe a change majorly occurred 2019 (new management/revamp/social media - Instagram & more). We receive complimentary miso soups + cucumber salads + shishito peppers in addition to our orders... The table was FULL of food (for just us two lol)! Steven's Lunch Special Combo (Chef's choice sashimi + 10 piece + salad) and my Japanese Veg Mapa/Mapo Tofu (the best I've ever had) + avocado roll + rice for two. Needless to say this vegan and his non-vegan friend scored a win! We took our time, enjoyed the decor, each others company and ambiance. Splitting the bill for our birthdays (Steve's the day after and mine a few days ago) and toasting to the holidays, not to mention our amazing server who packed up our many leftovers was the perfect return trip, more than worthy of a great tip! Would consider doing a pick up order - living less than half a mile away and enjoying again with friends as well as family. Huge portions, huge quality and huge customer service!!

What a gem of a Japanese spot tucked away in Sherman oaks. The menu features an eclectic mix of Japanese, chinese, and Korean items. I think of it as a Japanese restaurant that also has the best Korean and Chinese dishes on the menu so you can have it all! Never have to debate where to go for dinner again! We tried the chirashi bowl, sushi set, and Korean mixed rice. Everything was absolutely delicious and the portion sizes are very generous. Service was quick and courteous. Interior is low key but modern and clean. Parking in the back or in the neighborhood. We had a great dining experience here!

I had such an amazing experience! The sushi was absolutely delicious -- fresh, perfectly made, and full of flavor. I'm currently pregnant, and I gave them specific instructions to make everything pregnancy-safe, and they followed them exactly! I really appreciate how careful and attentive they were. It's so rare to find a sushi place that's both this tasty and accommodating. Definitely my new go-to spot! pregnancy approved !

Amazing pieces of fish and an incredibly sweet staff! The owner is always interacting w his customers to give them the best experience possible! The rolls are cut nicely and filled with a generous amount of fish every time; they even dress them w caviar and gold leaves. They offer free miso soup as a starter and ice cream for dessert. There is free parking in the next door body shop too if you can't find street parking. Great neighborhood spot!

Ask the Community - O Sumo Sushi

    Are the udon noodles vegan?

    Yes

I'm crashed!! I stopped by this afternoon and the restaurant was closed down with a big chain around the front doo. The place looked abandoned. Anyone knows what happened to this amazing Sushi place and all the amazing ppl who run it?😞 I'll miss I?

There are new owners now... to our favor, they're much better!!!

What happened to Sumo? Did they move or just close? I've been going there for 20 years!!

They closed and the new owners have that place clean and the food is amazing!!!! Better than the old owners

Just as importantly, the staff is always friendly and welcoming. A special shout-out to the Brussels sprouts appetizer, which has somehow become a mandatory order every time we visit. Dojo isn't so much a hidden gem as it is a jewel on Ventura Blvd. On a nice evening, the patio feels like a little oasis, with great food, great people-watching, and an atmosphere that keeps us coming back year after year. Seven years later, it's still one of our favorite spots.

The cut felt sloppy, and there was even a bone present, which made it hard to enjoy at all. More concerning than presentation was the overall freshness -- it had that slightly off, fishy edge that you just don't want when you're ordering salmon, especially if you normally love it. On the brighter side, the Hubba Hubba roll actually delivered. Balanced, flavorful, and easily the best thing we ordered. That said, the experience took a weird turn when the waitress cleared the plate while we were still actively eating from it. It felt rushed and a bit dismissive, especially for a restaurant at this price point. The vegetable gyoza was an easy skip. Dense, difficult to bite through, and oddly bland -- not much else to say there. The Big Daddy Roll and 911 Roll were fine, but nothing stood out. The fish didn't taste especially fresh, the rice felt a little past its prime, and overall everything leaned more "okay sushi night" than anything memorable. At the end of the meal, I just wasn't convinced. Between the inconsistency in freshness, a couple execution issues, and the pacing of service, I'm not sure I'd return -- especially given the price. One good roll in an otherwise uneven experience isn't quite enough to bring me back, but I'd be curious if this was an off night or just the norm. Casual spot with premium pricing.

Each plate looked like a piece of art--everything was neatly arranged, balanced in color, and visually inviting. The sushi itself was beautifully plated. The fish had a fresh, vibrant shine, and the cuts were clean and precise. Garnishes like such as microgreens, and wasabi were placed thoughtfully, not just for decoration but to complement the dish. Even the simplest rolls looked elegant, with tight, uniform shapes and a nice contrast between ingredients. Overall, Sushi Zen Toro delivers both in flavor and presentation. The Yuzu Hirame was too creamy & weird for me, but again, my hubby liked it. I grew up with boring plain sashimi so I guess my palate is old LOL. Chicken teri lunch was a good portion & my husband enjoyed his sashimi lunch. The one downside was the miso soup. Guys, if this is an upscale restaurant you gotta COOK your miso soup. As a Japanese raised in Japan I was shocked to get re-heated soup with cold tofu & instant seaweed. I mean, what? Come on. Let's COOK all the ingredients. And no "grow-in-the-water" seaweed. You got a dry-aged fish market, handroll bar, a Japanese specialty market, and a coffee/tea shop. Two of us went around 7pm and the restaurant was nearly empty, maybe six other guests total. We both ordered from the medium or extra medium hand roll sets. The fish quality was solid, which is the most important thing, but some of the flavor combinations felt a little unbalanced. The bigger issue was how long everything took. The restaurant was practically empty and yet the wait was still really significant. The reason is simple: there is only one chef making all the hand rolls for the whole restaurant. When that is your entire menu and you only have one person executing it, the math just does not work, even on a slow night. It turns what should be a fun, relaxed dining experience into a lot of sitting around and waiting. One more thing worth mentioning, avoid the matcha. They leave it sitting out in direct sunlight which causes it to oxidize and the flavor suffers significantly for it. I think with another chef on the line and a clearer sense of direction this place could be really special. For now though it is a spot with a lot of promise that has not quite found its footing yet. Also parking sucks.
