I worked at the summer house back when I was a teenager, and still continue to eat here 25 years later. The Summer House is great for groups of people who want simple food made quickly. Grilled cheeses, hot dogs, burgers, fries. They offer veggie burgers, vegetarian soups, salads and gluten-free bread as alternatives to the traditional grill fair. One of the great things about this place, is they have a consistently kid friendly menu including dinosaur nuggets and curly fries. I've met no child that can't find something to eat here. That actually says a lot. While they do not have some of the crazier flavors that some of the other ice cream stands offer, they do have a good selection of hard ice cream, the delicious twist soft serve, yogurt options and sorbet, shakes and sundaes. You can also call your order in ahead of time.Even in the winter, they keep the dining area at a very comfortable temperature so don't be afraid to try it out. We just stopped in on a whim because we saw a crowd and a sign for ice cream. We got some delicious soft serve for the family and sat in a shaded table in the back. The kids played on the "train" and said they can't wait to come back. We didn't get food but were super jealous of all the food all around us, it looked great! Just want everyone to know, when I visited the Summer house on July 28, 2020, and asked if the cooks were wearing masks, I was told, No they do not. I've seen this problem with them before not wearing gloves, not feeling confident that they take precautions to keep their customers safe. read more

Hilarious that another reviewers boyfriend calls Southwick SouthHick. Its where I grew up. I even worked for a short while here.. cuz I'll be honest.. with a whopping 4 stop lights and only a few restuarants.. you pretty much end up working at all of em at one time or another. I quit cuz it was too hard and my arms were too whimpy to get the hard ice cream out. I did like to call out the numbers though. I digress... The summer house is effing awesome. The soft serve is delish and I love the chocolate dip. I like to get half chocolate and half cherry dip. GENIUS. The 2 reasons I continually go here are for the clam strips and for the set ups. In ole' SouthHick we call it a set up. Its basically a cheesburger on bread with melted cheese. I like to call it a Grilled Cheese with burger. Its so melty and amazing. Cant even take it. Its a very family oriented place with a playground in the back for the kiddies. The walk up window has lines at all three into the parking lot in the summer. Its a staple for the area. The Summer House is a nice stop with a large selection of fast foods. Hot dog and hamburgers are the core, but soups fried foods and sandwiches fill out the menu nicely. The food is average quality and comes fairly fast despite the heavy business they often have. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. Nice outdoor seating area or take the whole thing to go. Every so often we stop in here on our way through town, but usually are left with that fast-food regret after doing so. read more

Mom and I ordered cheeseburgers on grilled bread. They were SO greasy that we tried to blot them on napkins and the tray paper. Disgusting; obviously they buttered them or the grill too much; it wasn't burger drippings. Fries were good but won't be back. read more

I started going to the Summer House back in high school with friends, then as a student at Westfield State. I haven't been back in years until this past week. The renovations look great and made for a lot more inside seating - which is great since they are open year-round. The food is exactly as I remember it. Nothing fancy or special, but also not greasy or soggy. I always leave happy and full after a big cheeseburger on toast, spicy curly fries and a peanut butter milkshake. This time, we brought our dogs and sat outside at the picnic tables and enjoyed the crisp weather. If Summer House delivered, I'd be in trouble. read more

WOW!!!!! I've lived in Westfield for several years and this was my first trip to Summer House, and it won't be my last. I have Celiac and it's difficult for me to find a place that I can enjoy a meal like everyone else. They have gluten free rolls,bread and ice cream cones!!!!!!!!!! I was so excited because it was the first time in over 6 years I was able to get soft serve ice cream in a cone. The staff was very friendly and quick. The food was delicious and the dining area very clean, they also have plenty of picnic tables outside so you can eat out there and enjoy the weather. Overall very good experience. read more

Been coming to The Summer House since I was a kid, way before the addition of more seating and kiddie size picnic tables outdoors. This is your typical burger/ fried food/ ice cream joint. The burgers come as what New Englanders know to be called the 'setup'-on toast, and you tell them the toppings you want as you order. Believe it or not that have really great soup here, especially the cream of asparagus, and broccoli cheddar. They have a wide variety of flavors of ice cream, my favorite being the peppermint stick. They also have a cherry dip for soft serve. You can dine in, or out, and watch the kiddos play on the wooden train and bridge while you wait for your order # to be called on the loudspeaker. This place can be extremely busy on warm summer days, sometimes you wait an hour for your food. They have had groupons before, and when you go to use it, they put the remainder on a giftcard, so you don't have to spend it all at once! I have never been impressed with this place and have pretty much stopped going since they aren't the only ice cream place in town. Why? Prices are ok, parking can be a pain especially when there is a long line of customers at the outdoor windows and I don't know if they still have it but the wooden train that is outside for the kids to play in always smells like a child wet themselves while playing in it. The actual food? It's nothing to write home about; I don't know if it's the ice cream flavor(s) I order but I always found ice crystals in my ice cream. There sandwiches and fries aren't anything I couldn't make at home - and sometimes WAY too greasy! You have to sit for your meal and they give you your receipt with your number on it, they then call numbers over their (at times hard to hear) intercom so you can pick it up. I would agree with another writer, that the waffle cones are getting smaller and you're paying more. On a recent visit we purchased two large flurries and it cost us $10.00, a little pricey and you have to remind them to fill to the top. But my biggest complaint is that none of the cooks or preps wear rubber gloves, they prepare all your food in bare hands, we stopped going for food after I saw the cook wiping away sweat with his hand and then grabbing toast out of the toaster.
