I love coffee--whether or not coffee loves me back. (Specifically my digestive and urinary system.) Nonetheless, I'm always on the hunt for the best and cutest coffeeshop in each town. Summer Moon wins the trophy amongst the strip mall, cornfield town of Kenosha. I was aware that this is an Austin, TX chain which attracted me with oak wood roasted coffee beans, modern latte flavors and their Moon Milk. The friendly cashier gave me a taste of the Moon Milk which was a thick, sweet milk similar to a smoothie. They also have a milk alternative called Moon Juice that is just as smooth and tasty. I enjoy the fact that you can order how sweet you want your drink to be. I ordered a cappuccino so I could taste the actual espresso. A burst of flavors with smoke, charcoal and coffee-forward--though not burnt like Starbucks. On this 90* day I also had to go with an Iced Blueberry Crisp Latte which was sublime! It tasted like dessert in a cup. Staff was super friendly. Location newer and well kept up and clean. Drive-thru available. I'd come here before Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks hands down! I ended up taking a cute t-shirt as well at $20 and super soft cotton. Next time I'm back in town visiting family I'll stop in for sure. read more

Summer Moon was a perfect addition to Kenosha. Whenever I was feeling something a little *better* than Starbucks, Daily Dose was my go to. I still love my Daily Dose, but this is 1 minute away and tastes so good! They're known for their moon milk, which is certainly a sweet thick milk creamer. I always ask for the whisper moon iced latte because I only wanted a splash of sweetness. It's the perfect level of sweetness. It's the cutest study spot, which is amazing to have in Kenosha because the vibe of three Starbucks in my area just isn't enough for what I'm looking for. It's cozy, inviting, not too loud, and has a fireplace to help with the study *ambiance* My only complaint *note the -1 star* is the ice. They use nugget ice which really isn't appropriate for iced coffee. It melts immediately and by the time you grab your drink, it has 1-2 mini melted ice cubes left. I'm probably the odd one out when I say I love a lot of ice in my coffee. Starbucks gives the perfect amount of ice for my liking. 10 times out of 10 I go home and add more ice. Unfortunately, when you get an iced coffee to go, or drink there, you're stuck with iced coffee with no ice! The apparel is adorable. It fits in with the new age modern style, and I've been eyeing up their oversized crewneck sweatshirts for months. They're $42 which I can't pull the trigger because I think it's a little outrageous, but the items are Bella canvas which is definitely good material! I stopped by for a quick coffee to go but there was nothing quick about it. The place was booming - booming like there is no other coffee shop in town. The outside is deceiving. A basic strip mall look opens up to a beautifully charming interior. Dark blue, brick, leather and varnished wood create a lovely place to enjoy a coffee moment. Various seating options make the large room very comfortable. The line I waited in moved along at a good pace and the rich, beautiful coffee was worth the wait. Layered in flavor, my simple black coffee offered the perfect balance of bold and smooth. This coffee shop has a drive thru also, in case you want coffee on the run. I will definitely return the next time I am in town. read more

Kenosha needs good coffee shops and Summer Moon is a welcome addition. Lots of comfortable spots to sit down and visit, good espresso and drinks to perk you up, and a welcoming crew to help you understand their *slightly* confusing menu and ordering system. If you like sugar, this is the place for you. If you aren't a fan of sweet drinks you can still find what you love -- just don't let them put any of their "special" milk in your espresso. For a standards latte or Americano they do a good job! read more

Very pleasant space, knowledgeable and friendly staff, fast service and...most important, good coffee! Their signature cream has some added sweeteners, so I passed and judged the coffee with a simple Americano. Decaf, even. This is a test many shops fail, with a lackluster or downright awful decaf bean. Happy to report Summer Moon delivered. Smooth and medium bodied, this was a welcome drink. I am very particular about the coffee I drink. I grind the beans at home, and use a pour over or drip coffee maker. I used to purchase Kona coffee online directly from a coffee farm in Hawaii. Stopped doing that after I discovered coffee from Summer Moon. Absolutely love it. The coffee shop is charming. Well-appointed, extremely nice, helpful staff. Delicious treats, too! This place was hopping on a Saturday. It definitely seems to be the local hangout. The espresso and iced tea were very good, but the baked goods were acceptable. The cherry muffin seemed like it was on the artificial side, not a cherry to be seen. The service was top-notch, very friendly. And the space was very clean and inviting. When I heard a Summer Moon was coming to Wisconsin, I immediately made the trek from Milwaukee to Kenosha on the opening day. They did a great job on getting through the lengthy line and owners/managers available to talk to you as you made your way through the line which made waiting even easier. The coffee itself was the best I have ever had, I had the Iced Blue Moon, and I bought some to take home and the moon milk so I could make my own drink at home since it is a 40 minute drive for me. The café itself was very inviting with a nice children's area. What I liked best was that the children's are was in a corner so if you are there to get some work done you can do so without distraction! read more

Coffee 9, Espresso 8.5, Dairy 10, Merchandise 10, Service 10, Environment 9.5, Whole Bean 6.5 (rating only one blend), Value/Price: 6.5 I love coffee's 3rd wave in the US (Intelligentsia, Colectivo, V60/Btz Encore/Stag), and Summer Moon is perfect for Kenosha County! It's perfect because it's more similar to Colectivo's cafes than Intelligentsia's, which means it can stay in business by attracting more than just us coffee "snobs" ;-) . Both their drip coffees (no individual brew options) were strong and flavorful; I would not be disappointed to receive those from any 3rd wave coffee shop I've been to. My Americano surprisingly and deliciously highlighted the smokiness of their oak-roasted, wood-fired method, but did not taste burnt. The half-moon latte was quite sweet; I wasn't expecting their "Moon Milk" sweet cream to be so sweet, but it is rich. The latte's foam was velvety smooth, without a single bubble - it was perfect! Dairy and non-dairy options were extensive, and the staff were patient, helpful, and friendly. I realized too late that I was being a challengingly complicated customer my second visit there. The staff never seemed put off in the least, though; they were obliging, helpful, and kind. Interacting with them was a delight, and my drinks were ready surprisingly fast, even at the packed grand opening. The merchandise is of better quality, with diverse unique selections, than any shop I've ever been in (though you won't find a grinder or kettle there). For full disclosure, I know the managers and a couple of the staff there, but my service was from people I don't know. The cafe is big, with lots of seating, beautifully customized furniture, and even a children's play room, which my nephew enjoyed. The decor and vibe are warm, inviting, appealing, and stylish. Staff are friendly. Almost a 10/10, it is one of the better cafe environments I've experienced. Whether you take this positively or negatively, there was little-to-no evidence (masks, signage, etc) of the pandemic in the environment. There were only 2 things that were not phenomenal - price and the one whole bean I have tried. The only whole bean I tried was Summer Moon's "Afterglow." It's labeled as a light roast from Mexico with "sweet yams, grapefruit" flavor notes. I brewed it in a Chemex and/or V60 multiple times, using recipes that have delivered citrus notes from different coffees (including from Mexico) I've tried over the years. Not once did it taste like a light roast with grapefruit notes. I've never had sweet yams, but I could appreciate that. Had it been labeled a medium, or light-medium, roast with sweet yam notes, as well as something like milk chocolate, graham, or toasted almonds, I would have been a fan. I don't have a very sensitive palate. This coffee tasted like one of the best plain, solid coffees I've ever had. If I was trying to introduce someone to 3rd wave coffee, avoiding challenging them with any unfamiliar flavors, this might be the best 3rd wave blend I've ever encountered for that. It's definitely a good blend, but when a 3rd wave shop sells a 12oz, $14.95, bag of coffee that's labeled a light roast with grapefruit notes, an experienced amateur with decent equipment ought to be able to identify a light roast flavor and grapefruit notes. I have not frequented 3rd wave shops during the pandemic, so the price may reflect the cost of business now, rather than Summer Moon being more expensive. That being said, everything I browsed (drinks, whole bean, and merchandise) costed the same or more than other shops I've been to before the pandemic. The quality was very high, though, so I guess you get what you pay for. I still intend to go back as often as I can and recommend you do also. Overall, Summer Moon far exceeded my hopes, and I think it will continue to be a smashing success as more and more people experience it and its beverages. read more
