Matt was fantastic - professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and honest. He educated us on the maintenance needs of both fireplaces. Gave recommendations on options for our 75+ year old masonry. Did ONLY what was needed today based on how we use the units and what we were looking for. He could have "taken us" for more work or money given that we are not well-educated on fireplaces, but instead he took the time to explain what was needed (and not). He took pictures, explained work that is needed, and inspected the outside masonry of the chimneys. Will 100% call again for further refurbishment and annual maintenance/cleanings. 100% recommend Matt. Sarah - who responded to my web inquiry - was friendly, responsiveness, and flexible also. Work was scheduled in less than a week from my initial request. THANK YOU to Capital Chimney Chicago! Highest recommendation.

We got the inspection scheduled just as fast. On the day of the inspection, Chris called me to keep me updated throughout the day. The only thing I would slightly ding them for is that they arrived pretty much at the end of the appointment window. However, Chris kept me updated on his status. As promised, he sent me the photos, inspection report and the quote for suggested repairs the next morning. All around pleased with the experience! The team at Capital Chimney was quick, responsive and did the job. Recommend if you're looking for inspections!

So we meant to get it looked at in the off season, but forgot. So come this fall, we started calling some of the bigger and closer chimney places, but they didn't seem to want to try to fit us in this season or didn't even know if they serviced our type of fireplace. We didn't seem like a big priority. So I saw how many good reviews Chimney Care Guys had, and asked my husband to call them. Husband handled 95% of the experience and it was excellent, they were so helpful and renovated our fireplace so it's now remote control operated (read: idiot proof!) and clean and no carbon monoxide! Just SO pleased with the service and the fact that they treated us like valued customers and got us set u for this season even though we waited until November to call. Frankly I'm so happy my 16 year old senior cat is back to her spot in front of the fireplace.

We had the same 2 professional and kind technicians both times. They were quick, efficient and courteous. They cleaned the fireplace very well and offered to throw out the old log that was left in there. They even remembered that we had a kiddo who loved watching them and conversed with them. Very kind, very professional and will recommend 100%! They will be the ones we stick with for all future cleanings.

They installed the fireplace into a chase on an outside wall without reinstalling missing…read moreinsulation as required by IL Energy Code (which requires the entire fireplace chase to be finished equivalent to the rest of the outside wall--i.e. insulation and drywall). In addition, a more-than-sufficiently-large hole was cut into the back of the chase for the vent, which to my recollection did not receive any insulation either. I didn't think much of it until winter hit--bringing serious cold air drafts, along with frosty ice build up on the front of the fireplace frame within the house. I have since learned the repeated ice build up and melting will lead to wood rot, mold and rusting of the fireplace. I sent a few emails to Neal (the owner) about the issue. He not only refused to discuss it, but is also trying to push the responsibility off on a handyman. That is, prior the fireplace install, Ithe overhang edge of the chase roof had to be removed so the outside gas vent would have more clearance. Due to Neal's high "day rate" for a few hours of work, I hired my own guy to remove the overhang. Neal also wanted the fireplace box removed to measure clearance inside the chase and he subsequently rec'd photos and measurements. Despite clear lack of insulation and drywall across the ceiling of the chase, he and his team never mentioned it, nor did they come prepared to satisfy that aspect per IL energy code. With exposed plywood and nails from the shake roof above, and torn drywall corners visible, they simply installed the fireplace box, leaving the entire ceiling of the chase without insulation or drywall. I'm not the fireplace expert; I relied on him and his team--just as they directed that the overhang on the outside should be removed. Just as they directed to clear out the old fireplace box so they could measure. Yet...no mention of energy codes or insulating the chase. It would certainly be incumbent on a company claiming to be professional fireplace installers to address this one way or another, vs simply ignoring it. No wonder this company requires deposits upfront followed by immediate payment in full. I have also since learned they have held onto my credit card info (more than a year and half later) and charged a service fee without my authorization ($257.50 to change a few double A batteries instead of mentioning "there are batteries, did you check them?" when I called to say the fireplace wasn't turning on). Certainly leaves the customer feeling taken advantage of. Very bad experiences all around with Fireplaces Plus. UPDATE: He threatening me with a lawsuit unless I remove my review. My review is honest and accurate. I wonder how often other unhappy customers have felt intimidated enough by his lawsuit threat to remove their negative reviews...?

I learned a lot of things from my Dad-- How to be fair, how to work really hard and do more than is…read moreasked of you, how to be generous: I did not learn that if you have a fireplace and use it regularly, even if you always use hardwood, you will need to have it cleaned regularly. So after twenty years of making modest hardwood fires, I started to have a cough. My sister came to visit and even being in the living room (no fire) made her cough and gave her a runny nose. Thinking, okay, I'll have my chimney cleaned, I called Chicago Chimney. Toni was nice and said that Mario was really good at his work, and it would be $150. When he came, pleasant, personable, and clearly competent, I could see that being near my fireplace was making his nose run. I told him about my sister. Might need more that just a cleaning, he said. He shone his flashlight up a short ways into the fireplace. "I call that black glass", he said. What is it? I said. My English is not so good, he said, underestimating his excellent skills. Google clarified. I found out that bubbles of "black glass" represent the third stage of a serious creosote problem-- first soot, then tar that is runny, then the glass part, beautiful and perfectly ready for a chimney fire. One thing about my dad, he prepared me to know a good person when I saw him. Mario said that he was going to have to come back with material and brushes that could dissolve the creosote. The next day, when forty or fifty pounds of mortar on the chimney lining just fell off piece by piece once the creosote was not holding it all together, he explained that another day and another step would be involved, putting a mixture of protective covering over a now very porous surface, insulation, sealant. (As it happened, he did this himself by crawling up into the tight black space and painting it on. The dilemma of having a helper who was unwilling to do it was a problem he would deal with later. He took the guy off to another job and came back. It was this part, where he was a matter of fact about doing the exceptionally nasty work, and understanding about the kid's inability to do it-- he just said "last winter I was doing this every day." I want to put a sign up in my yard for him and his professional and humane work. He charged me $900 for the cleaning part and $1100 for the resealing part. Interestingly, this is less than $150/ year for 20 years, not even counting inflation; I recommend him wholeheartedly for yearly (or every-other-year sweeping) and for the whole cleaning and sealant job if you are someone who didn't know how bad it could get. He does tuckpointing too. The warmth and charm apparently come free.
